"But if using the same percentage of infection across all of Asia over a similar 16-month period, this would equate to 365 million head or 48 per cent of global pigs … [being] gone by mid-next year."
Let that sink in for a moment: nearly one in every two pigs dead by the middle of next year. https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2019-09-30/african-swine-fever-outbreak-in-timor-leste/11559812 |

I wonder what the chances of a recombination with one of the

I am pleased to report that recombination with a flu virus is rather unlikely. African swine fever is an Asfarvirus with no known relatives (except possibly the phycodnaviruses and pox viruses). Whereas, flu is an Orthomyxovirus.
Phycodnaviruses affect only algae and most human pox viruses are mild (at least the ones outside the lab). |

Sadly however, viruses mutate faster than anything else.

"One quarter of the world's pigs will be dead by the end of this year from African swine fever, which kills about 80 per cent of the pigs it infects and there's no vaccine and no cure.

More than a quarter of the world's pigs have been wiped out and there is little authorities can do about it.
African swine fever is spreading across the world and has Australia on high alert amid fears the arrival of the disease is inevitable. But even without it entering Australia, it's already having an effect on prices — both for farmers and consumers. Here's what we know. What is African swine fever? African swine fever is a highly infectious and contagious disease that's been spreading throughout pig populations worldwide. Experts say the disease has wiped out an estimated 25 per cent of the world's pig population. The fever has been reported in around 50 countries, including China, Belgium, Slovakia, Cambodia, North Korea, South Korea, Vietnam and the Philippines. The spread of the disease has now reached Timor Leste, a nation less than 700 kilometres from Darwin, posing an increased risk to Australia. |
