Tata Motors is mulling a plan to introduce an electric version of its Indica in Norway.

The demo car called Indica ev was recently shown in a industry conference. Ravi Kant, MD of Tata Motors said that electronic version of the car and its technology is something which Tata has been looking for. Commercial production of the car will start in couple of years.

Ravikant said that electric car is a zero emission car, and the need of time is to develop such cars. The new car is developed in joint venture with Norwegian firm. The car will have left-hand side steering. Citing the reason of higher requirement of infrastructure for electric car, he said that the car would be tested by the Norwegian party in Norway.

S. Ravishankar, Senior GM of Tata Motors' Engineering Research Centre (ERC) said that the car can run for 175 km to 200 km when fully charged with a 'two-pack' battery. However, according to him mileage could vary according to the battery used. Ravikant said that company would bring Indica ev in India within a year's time.

I really don't understand what you are trying to communicate.

I see a few articles about how our new administration is creating a green push. Do you think this is great? Do you hate it? Is it relevant to pandemics? Do you want to debate something? Or maybe to teach something? But what is the main point?

How to Go Green in Hard Times

You want to cut your carbon footprint.
But you can't wait years for a payback.

Here are 10 ways to help the environment -- and save money

By YULIYA CHERNOVA and SARI KRIEGER
It's tough to be green when money is tight.

Lots of big environmentally friendly changes look good in theory, like buying solar panels or switching to a hybrid car. The trouble is, many of those fixes take years to make back their cost -- and most people can't afford that luxury in these tough economic times.

Well if the goal is to get carbon out of the air the best and quickest thing to do would be to cut down every growing plant or tree we can find and bury it deep in the earth or lock it up some other way so that the carbon does not get into the atmosphere. If we cut down a billion pounds of tree and made buildings that lasted for a hundred years then all that carbon would not be in the air.

I personally like having trees around and since there is no harm in having carbon dioxide in the air I would prefer to keep the trees.

I suppose we could stick to every wood chip, grass clipping, bit of paper, and weed and then throw them into the deepest landfill. Then it a million years if anyone is still here they can have oil.

But again I prefer our recycling programs that makes those things useful. and since carbon dioxide in the air is not a problem I think the wood chips look great in my landscaping. and the paper makes nice new less expensive paper.

I would like to see solar cell pannels on every house in the south and southwest. We get plenty of sun, even in winter.
I saw something, discovery channel maybe, they are doing in Spain. A huge green house with a wind tunnel going vertical straight up in the center. Off season food and electricity. We can do these things.

Me too. Think of all the money those people could save - well provided that the cost of panels comes down as they will eventually if our politicians don't meddle.

If they do meddle they will artificially raise the price of gas/oil then these people will switch, not because they save money, but because they lose less. That will hurt the auto industry so they will offer them some backroom deal at the expense of the rest of us. Meanwhile the home owners are loosing so then they will offer rebates to artificially lower the price of panels at the expense of the rest of us. The only ones who win are the politicians who get to put a small amount of every deal into their pockets al along the way.

Going Green... Bigger than we realized?
    ................................................................

I lived for a time in VA... we had very reasonable elec. prices there.  Then a few northern states (even Quebec?) got together and sued the State of Virginia over their Coal Fired Elec. Plants.  I think about now is when they promised to stop the dirty burning altogether.
So I am not all astonished to hear Elec prices are going up in that area of the country.

    ....................................

...But the Treasury secretary acknowledged that consumers could face higher electric bills because Obama would impose fees on greenhouse gas producers, including power plants that burn fossil fuels, by auctioning off carbon pollution permits. The goal is to reduce the emissions blamed for global warming while raising a projected $646 billion over 10 years.

"Now, if people don't change how they use energy, then they will face higher costs for energy," Geithner said.

    Article here-
Obama's plan to hike taxes meets fierce opposition
     .................................................................................................

More On The Subject From USA Today-

Here's a shocker: Electricity bills are heading up. Way up.

    By Paul Davidson, USA TODAY

Utilities across the USA are raising power prices up to 29%, mostly to pay for soaring fuel costs, but also to build new plants and refurbish an aging power grid.
Even more dramatic rate increases are ahead. The mounting electric bills will further squeeze households struggling with spiraling gasoline prices.
"Consumers now face a tough reality on electricity," says Mark Cooper of Consumer Federation of America.

The increases come after rising fuel prices already have driven up utility bills nearly 30% in the past five years, the sharpest jump since the 1970s energy crisis. Fuel costs are again the main culprit. In Virginia, Potomac Edison, citing high coal and natural gas prices, plans to raise rates 29% on July 1, pushing an average monthly residential bill from about $70 to $90.

AmerenUE, Missouri's largest utility, recently asked for its first rate increase in 20 years, a 12.1% boost, mostly to cover higher fuel costs. Customers of Public Service Co. of Oklahoma were socked with a 25% rise on June 1.

The price of coal, which fires half of U.S. power plants, has doubled since last year, largely because of surging energy use in countries such as China and India. Natural gas prices are up nearly 50% on high U.S. demand. In California, drought has forced Pacific Gas & Electric to replace cheap hydroelectric power with natural gas, helping to prompt it to seek 13% rate increases.
The cost to build a power plant has also gone up, more than doubling since 2000. South Carolina Electric & Gas wants to boost rates 37% by 2019 to cover its share of two nuclear reactors costing $10 billion.

Some utilities are seeking several increases. In New York City, Con Edison, which raised rates 4.7% in April, seeks increases of 5% in each of the next three years to fund $5.5 billion in equipment after a 2006 Queens blackout. That's on top of an anticipated 13% rate increase this summer for higher fuel charges.

"We must make sure that our system has the highest reliability," says Con Ed spokesman Michael Clendenin.
Queens Assemblyman Michael Gianaris says Con Ed wasted funds on new plants elsewhere and urges regulators to reject the proposal. "I say not one penny more until reforms are done," he says.

Expect bigger rate shocks if federal legislation, anticipated by 2010, passes and forces coal-fired generators to pay fees to emit global-warming gases. American Electric Power, the largest coal-fired generator, will have to raise rates 115% to pay higher fuel costs, build new plants and recover global-warming fees, says Hugh Wynne of Bernstein Research. But Wynne says regulators could temper increases by trimming profits

Even with an agreement, the Task Force concludes that "ensuring that the biggest emitters meet their commitments would still be a monumental task." It thus recommends creating a Partnership for Climate Cooperation that would focus the world's largest emitters, including India and China, on implementing aggressive emissions reductions. The partnership would complement efforts in the United Nations to get a global treaty.

The Task Force urges policymakers to not ignore the important economic challenges involved in reducing emissions, noting that near-term costs "matter because they affect the livelihood of Americans." It argues, though, that a "properly designed and executed domestic policy ... can avoid unacceptable shocks or disruptions and smooth the transition to a low-carbon economy." It also says that climate policy "presents opportunities to strengthen important parts of the economy and create jobs, to rebuild U.S. partnerships and alliances, and to bolster energy security."

and employer demand is likely to be unbalanced for a while- in the workforce's favor.

India's Tata rolls out world's cheapest car
    ................................................................

    by Salil Panchal

MUMBAI (AFP) - India's Tata Motors on Monday launched the world's cheapest car, the Nano, hoping to
revolutionise travel for millions and buck a slump in auto sales caused by the global economic crisis.
Company boss Ratan Tata said the no-frills vehicle, slated to cost just 100,000 rupees (2,000 dollars)
for the basic model, will get India's middle-class urban population off motorcycles and into safer, affordable cars.
"I think we are at the gates of offering a new form of transport to the people of India and later, I hope,
other markets elsewhere in the world," he said, describing the launch as a "milestone."

As the commercial model of India's microcar is unveiled,
U.S. carmakers would do well to learn from the innovations
    that brought it about

    By Jessie Scanlon

When Tata Motors (TTM) unveiled a prototype of its Nano microcar at
the Delhi Auto Show in January 2008, auto executives around the world
were aflutter. Quickly, they hustled teams to India to document the planned
$2,000 "people's car." And industry watchers and innovation experts soon
reported on the engineering and supply-chain breakthroughs behind the car.

     UPDATE 3-

Tata Nano to hit Indian roads in July

    Mon Mar 23, 2009 12:14pm EDT

    By Janaki Krishnan

MUMBAI, March 23 (Reuters) - The Tata Motors (TAMO.BO) Nano, the world's cheapest car at around $2,000,
will hit Indian roads in July and, with demand set to far outstrip supply, the first 100,000 owners will be picked at random.
Hundreds of thousands are expected to put their name down for a Nano, including many previously limited
to motorbikes or public transport, following Monday's formal launch.

Thousands of government leaders and the nearly 300 companies that participated all agreed on one thing about the 2009 Green California Summit - it was the biggest and best yet.

Presentation after presentation made it clear that no state is better positioned to access - and make good use - stimulus dollars than California. A green revolution is unfolding, and California is where it will begin.

Europe's Way of Encouraging Solar Power Arrives in the U.S.

    By KATE GALBRAITH
    Published: March 12, 2009

    excerpt-

Put simply, the idea is to pay homeowners and businesses top dollar for producing green energy.

In Germany, for example, a homeowner with a rooftop solar system may be paid four times more to produce electricity than the rate paid to a coal-fired power plant.

This month Gainesville, Fla., became the first city in the United States to introduce higher payments for solar power, which is otherwise too expensive for many families or businesses to install. City leaders, who control their electric utility, unanimously approved the policy after studying Germany's solar-power expansion.

This is one of the most prominent environmental cases to reach the Supreme Court in decades. It revolves around the US Clean Air Act's statement that the head of the EPA "shall" regulate emissions of new vehicles "which in his judgment cause, or contribute to, air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger the public health or welfare".

The Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles is a group of U.N. organizations, national governments, industry and public interest groups committed to helping countries around the world develop and implement action plans for eliminating lead and phasing down sulfur in diesel and gasoline fuels.

Diesel exhaust poses a very serious health problem both in the United States and around the world. NRDC has helped pave the way toward using cleaner and cheaper fuel alternatives, eliminating the health effects of diesel once and for all.

Changan Auto to set up 6th overseas factory in Mexico

    Published: 18 Feb 2009 17:57:14 PST

Feb. 18, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Changan Automobile (Group) Co Ltd, the fourth largest automaker in China, has recently signed a cooperation framework with Mexico's AutoPark to set up an automobile factory in Mexico, sources reported.

Under the agreement, the two sides will jointly produce and sell Changan Auto's products in Mexico, including Changan Benni, Zhixiang and Alsvin.

Besides, Changan Group and AutoPark expect that the joint venture (JV) will help them enter the North America auto market in the near future, as the JV can enjoy the U.S. tariff exemption policy in the North America Free Trade Area.

Changan Group did not reveal the details of the investment and construction plans.

Official statistics showed that Mexico, one of the most important auto markets in America, put out about 2.2 million cars last year, with 70% to 80% being exported to 40 countries and areas worldwide. However, the country sold 2.3 million vehicles in 2008, down 20% from the previous year.

Chongqing-based Changan Auto is Ford and Suzuki's partner in China. Its corporation, Chongqing Changan Automobile Co Ltd<000625> is listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. The group has set up five overseas factories in Malaysia, America, Iran, Ukraine and Vietam.

The group's executive said that Changan Auto exported 40,000 vehicles to overseas markets in 2008, and it aims to increase the figure to 200,000 annually in the coming three years.

Chinese ambassador: China-Russia oil pipeline serves strategic goals of both sides

by Xinhua writers Yu Maofeng, Zhao Jialin

MOSCOW, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The construction of the China-Russia oil pipeline conforms with the strategic goals of China and Russia to diversify the former's energy imports and latter's energy exports, Chinese Ambassador to Russia Liu Guchang has said.
The move reflects the two countries' confidence and determination to tide over together the current global economic downturn, Liu said in a recent written interview with Xinhua on Sunday.
The signing of a package of oil cooperation deals between China and Russia as well as the start of the oil pipeline project marked a major breakthrough in their energy cooperation, represented a new height of China-Russia strategic partnership of cooperation and further substantiate this partnership, Liu said.
Trade of crude via the pipeline will help stabilize and enhance the growth in bilateral trade, the diplomat added.
Under the agreement reached between both countries, China and Russia will jointly build and operate the pipeline from Russia's Siberian city of Skovorodino to China's northeastern city of Daqing as its terminal via China's border city of Mohe.

Proposition 1A - High Speed Rail Bond Act

Proposition 1a would authorize the state to sell more than $9.9 billion in bonds to help pay for a high-speed rail line linking Irvine, Los Angeles, Fresno and San Francisco. The measure includes $9 billion for high-speed rail and $950 million for commuter and conventional intercity rail. The bonds would be paid off over a period of years, with interest boosting the total cost to about $19 billion.

    What about Clean Coal?
    ..........................................

Coal, which is primarily used for the generation of electricity,[7] is the second largest domestic contributor to carbon dioxide emissions in the USA.[8] The public has become more concerned about global warming which has led to new legislation.

The coal industry has responded by running advertising touting clean coal in an effort to counter negative perceptions, as well as by putting more than $50 billion towards the development and deployment of clean coal technologies, including carbon capture and storage.[9] The expenditure has been unsuccessful to date in that there is not a single commercial scale coal fired power station in the US that captures and stores more than token amounts of CO2.[10]
