At the time Ms McClure didn’t have any cash to give him but returned to the road several times bringing cash, clothes and food for Mr Bobbitt.

McClure said she was impressed that Mr Bobbitt would share the things she bought him with his homeless friends.

“One day I stopped to see him and had a few things in a bag to give him, one of which was a box of cereal bars so he could have something that he could carry around and eat,” she said.

“He was very appreciative as usual and the first thing he said was “do you want one?”

“Another time I dropped off 2 gift cards and a case of water ... the first words that came out of his mouth were ‘I can’t wait to show the guys’ (there are two others he hangs out with and they all take care of each other). “

She soon became inspired to do something more to help the 34-year-old so set up the GoFundMe fundraiser to help him find accommodation.

“I wish that I could do more for this selfless man, who went out of his way just to help me that day,” she wrote on the fundraising page, which has so far raised $US116,000 from 4000 contributors.

“Truly believe that all Johnny needs is one little break. Hopefully with your help I can be the one to give it to him.”

Ms McClure told the Philadelphia Inquirer that she didn’t know what to do when she ran out of petrol.

“My heart was beating out of my chest,” she said.

She called her boyfriend Mark D’Amico to come and pick her up when Mr Bobbitt came out of the darkness.

The former Marine veteran and paramedic was concerned for her safety and told her to lock the doors and stay in her car while he went to fetch the fuel.

“Ten minutes later,” Mr D’Amico said, “she called me and said the guy brought her (petrol).”

Ms McClure said Mr Bobbitt wants to rent a place in New Jersey and work at the Amazon warehouse.

“Truly believe that all Johnny needs is one little break. Hopefully with your help I can be the one to give it to him,” she said.
