Printed off nearly EVERY list and all important suggestions and directions from this site to be kept in page protected binder! I'm comparing lists to my own list/shopping -- adjusting it all to our own families needs and location.-k

I am a fairly new member here, though I have been reading this forum for months. Thank you so much for this forum and all the wonderful people who participate! I have done so much since finding this site, and it has helped me to get my wonderful husband on board too. Probably the most unusual prep we did was to spend another day at the shooting range, something we now do every week or two. Also got a Colman duel fuel stove (can use the camp fuel you by, but when that runs out it also uses gasoline). Planning on haveing both cars filled but staying put, so should have lots of fuel. Already had a propane grill.
Have 90 gal of distilled bottled water. Water is an issue for me, as we really don't have any source of water nearby so a filter wouldn't do much good. Wondering though, if the water stops, and then starts up again, isn't it contaiminated for awhile? Would it help to have a filter for that?
Bought a pressure cooker, but husband pointed out that it was made out of aluminum, so thinking I'll return it. Would be a bummer to survive bird flu only to get alzheimer's! (there's alot of info out there linking aluminum to alzheimers).
Thanks again for an awesome web site. It has helped our family sooo much.
Strider (Strider is my cat, who is going to be VERY upset when he has to become an inside cat!)

Over the weekend - my daughter and I canned 23 pints of butter. This was our first canning experence, but it was very easy and lots of fun.

We also  bought a Coleman propane stove, 50 lb flour, 25 lb sugar, and 25 lb popcorn. I need to order containers for all of this (as well as rice, etc) I'm thinking about square buckets w lids.

My husband ran a pipe system from our pool into our house - for an emergency water source. (I was expecting an ugly pipe running across our deck, but he was able to hide everything. Smile)  Now we need to order a water filter.

When I go to work, the AC goes off, and it sometimes gets kinda warm in here. So, I removed all the worthless items from my fridge, and fill it with all my precious chocolate.

My hubby has just finished another set of shelves for us to store our canned goods on.
I am working on going through boxes of stuff that hasn't been unpacked from two moves ago. We're having a yard sale this coming weekend and I'm getting rid of all the things I won't use. This will give us more room and more prep money.

Between baby showers, visits from family members (long distance), shopping and shuffling children around, I somehow managed to go over my "old" list for food storage - I know I had some big holes in there compared to what was in my pantry ... so, now it's almost completely revised - a food menu for a month, including a grocery list and recipes.
This includes the "LDS" basics along with supplemental foods of canned & frozen foods.  Still working on the non-foods list.  None of the family members asked about the foods, or new equipment I had stacked around the kitchen!

Over the weekend brought a new 16-qt roaster to help cook beans & soups for canning,  American Harvester dehydrator & extra trays.

Went to Sam's club for some basic food storage to start filling the "gaps."  Nobody seems to be prepping, just observed basic junk foods in their carts - soda pop, chips, quick to heat frozen foods.

Ordered some cookbooks--will post reviews once received

Purchased 4 boxes (80 masks) of 3M-8110S masks for self & kids.  We're small folk, & the 8110-S is the ONLY mask that fits our faces. $17.99 per box, plus tax.

Purchased a few different type of swim goggles from Dollar Tree. $3.24

Purchased 18 (36 total)  of size C batteries on clearance at Walmart for .02 cents a pack--good until 2012.

Purchased 20 (80 total) packs of AA batteries on clearance at Walmart for .25 cents a pack--good until 2012.

Purchased 20 (80 total) packs of  Ever Ready D batteries from Dollar tree--good until 2009. I figure if I only get 4 hours from 4 batteries, I got my money's worth.

Played around with my Butane Backpack burner that arrvived Friday. This thing is great: cooked soup in 8 minutes!  The burner is pretty big--about the size of a regular burner on a gas stove.

Purchased four 32- bottle flats of water-- 16 gallons $16.96

Purchased 1 can of Nestle Table Cream to try from Walmart to use with taco mix above .92 cents

Decided to purchase fresh meat for only 3 meals a week.  This allows more money towards shelf stable foods that we like in my budget.  We'll cook more from canned foods & supplement with fresh.  this way, if we loose power, our loss will be small-- also frees my freezer for grain storage.

bought more canned goods.  Ordered a solar AA battery recharger.  I have a small TV that runs off AA's, so I will use up batteries pretty quickly watching that.  Called HandyMan connection to have a light installed in the storage closet that I want to use for stockpiling.  I probably should be able to see what I'm doing in there while I'm stocking.

Oh, stocked up on hand sanitizer from Dollar Tree.  It did have 62% alcohol.

Prep for a grid-up pandemic - built my wife a new computer.  The one that she had been using was one notch above a door-stop, and it finally dropped that last notch.  Now she has something that is fun and useful for her.

Picked up a pair of walkie talkies because they can be useful when cell-phones are without power or cell reception (caravanning, one person outside and the other inside, etc).

Went to the dollar store and bought up more adult and childrens tylenol, cough medication and some other over the counter medications for various illnesses. Aslo bought paper plates, spices, boxed potatoes and canned stew. Question: if the cans have a June 2007 date that it is best sold by, how long is it good for? The stuff at dollar stores often have dates on the cans that aren't that far away.

I found the fondue pot!  Yippie!  After we moved, I forgot  which box it was in.   A couple of weekends ago when we neatened up the garage, we unearthed some boxes that had no labels and lo, in one was the missing fondue pot.

Like the tap light idea--quick illumination, on and off in a flash--I use one in my shed, primarily to shoo the scary critters away when I venture in there.

As far as the expiration dates, I would check the USDA website.  I suspect that expo dates are more elastic for cans than for aseptic packaging.  i found 1 liter boxes of aseptic milk at Mcfrugals the other day, but the expo date was April 4 2006.  Not quite ready to take that risk.

I have read that tomato products are more likely to go south and develop a tinny taste (sorry to all the beefaroni fans out there)--probably has to do with the high acidity.

I spent a half day cleaning out my bathroom shelves and cabinets.  This allowed me room to store all of my first aid supplies, cough medicine and other over the counter meds.   i also stored my extra soap, tooth paste dental floss, alcohol peroxide shampoo first aid kits for househols and pets.  I'm thankful that I have all these items out of my hallway now.

I got one of those wire shelves w/ multiple shelves for cans ... put that up in some dead space in my closet .. now I can see what OTC meds & first aid I have, what I need ... close the door and it's protected from the bathroom moisture.

Did a $2 challenge today...with $2 I was able to buy:

(2) tubs of Huggies baby wipes
(2) Huggies baby wash
(1) Gerber Grins & Giggles baby wash, good for colds
(2) boxes of Ghiradelli's brownie mix
(10) boxes of Totino's pizza rolls

The pizza rolls will be gone by tomorrow night - my dog will ensure that. Will add the brownie mix to the pantry and the baby supplies to my current stockpile. I love coupons! LOLLOL

Here is more about freezing eggs. The home web (American Egg Board) is:

http://www.aeb.org/Index.asp

Freezing Eggs

If you receive a windfall of eggs far beyond your capacity to use within a few weeks, they can be frozen—not in the shell, of course. Freeze only clean, fresh eggs. more..............

The link on freezing is (scroll down the page to see freezing): http://www.aeb.org/LearnMore/Eggcyclopedia/F.htm

Hope this helps,

Another bit of info on the eggs ... freeze 2-per or 3-per freezer bag, that way you don't have to thaw the "whole" bag ... good for omelets, scrambled eggs or for recipe portions.

We just about have our garden ready to plant - it needs to dry out a little before we plant.  Cabbage, squash, cucumbers, okra, peas, bunch beans, tomatoes, peppers, (bell, banna, jalepeno), egg plants, cauliflower, broccoli, sweet corn, cantalopes, radish, onion sets, and watermelons.

Bought some more basic preps, rice, pasta, canned meats etc.  Problem now is my closet, under bed and behind chair in my bedroom is full  and i've still got about 25% to go for a year.   I'm trying to keep my preparations secret from my son, as I'm sure he would tell everyone he knows, including my ex and two daughters who would probably think i'm off my rocker.  Anyone know what can be safely put in the attic other than paper goods (rice, pasta???).   MY KINGDOM FOR A BASEMENT!

More kitty litter, three cases of wet food for my cats, large jar of peanut butter, 2 jams, more butter for canning, dehydrated potato slices, cheese ravioli, Velveeta cheese, Carnation Instant breakfast drink.
I took a good fall today, so I'm calling it quits for now and take a nap.
