States considers bird flu powers
Guernsey's government wants to grant itself new powers to help prevent bird flu spreading to the island. The new legislation from the States would bring the island in line with other jurisdictions. The proposals pave the way for tighter controls on poultry owners, movements of birds and the disposal of carcasses. The authorities already have some power to slaughter infected birds, but the new law would mean suspected cases could also be destroyed. Negative test Compulsory registration of domestic birds and the power to force owners to keep birds undercover are on the cards. Tighter controls on the imports of eggs, feed and bedding could also be introduced. The States said the new measures would only be put in place if it was felt avian flu posed a big enough threat. A sick duck found in Jersey last week tested negative for bird flu. The Commerce and Employment Department urged people to be calm if a dead bird was found. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/guernsey/4908102.stm |
