BUCHAREST (AFP) - Bird flu has been found in a farmyard near the Romanian capital Bucharest, authorities confirmed, but they did not specify whether it was the potentially lethal H5N1 strain.

The mayor of the district northeast of the city told national television that "decontamination filters" had been installed "in the presence of veterinary specialists".

Some 525 homes housing 1,500 inhabitants had been placed in quarantine.

In another district south of Bucharest the local mayor said there was a "suspected" outbreak but there was no confirmation and analyses were being conducted.

Agriculture Minister Gheorghe Flutur called on the capital's inhabitants to keep calm and not to panic, pointing out that no human cases of bird flu had been recorded in Romania.

More than 70 outbreaks have been recorded in Romania since October last year.

Putting this at the top of the radar screen for potential future outbreaks.
Doesnt sound too good.

Minister calls for calm as bird flu spreads in Romania

Time is GMT + 8 hours

Romania's agriculture minister urged Bucharest residents not to panic after the bird flu virus surfaced in 44 locations, including two in the capital, since reappearing here 10 days ago.

.

Possible contamination in around 30 other locations, including one in Bucharest, has been identified over the last 24 hours.

.

Before this wave of new cases, bird flu had been confirmed in over 60 villages in Romania since October.

.

Agriculture Minister Gheorghe Flutur told residents in the capital "not to give in to panic," and called on district mayors to "deal with this crisis responsibly".

.

A quarantine in the capital's southern fourth district, one of the 44 sites affected, was reduced Tuesday, following criticism by Bucharest general administrator Mioara Mantale.

.

"We decided to isolate only five streets, or less than 500 people, so as not to distress the population," said Adrian Inimaroiu, the district's mayor.

.

"In the end, we only killed 230 birds in high-risk streets," he said.

.

Late Monday, Inimaroiu had said that around 13,000 residents would be placed under quarantine for 21 days and 2,500 birds culled, which led Mantale to accuse him on television of being irresponsible.

.

"There is no logical reason for putting 13,000 people under quarantine when only two farm yards have been contaminated," Mantale said, adding for Inimaroiu's benefit: "if you had been a civil servant and not elected, you would have been fired".

.

On Tuesday afternoon, a quarantine in the northern part of the capital affecting over 1,000 people since early Monday was also lifted.

.

Romanian authorities were still unable to explain how the virus had reached Bucharest.

.

The intelligence service (SRI) claimed contaminated birds imported from Hungary and Slovakia were the source of this latest spread of the disease but Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said there was no evidence to support this.

.

"An investigation has been launched by the National Veterinary Health Agency, which should determine the source of the virus. The SRI did its job but we must allow specialists to establish the causes of this disease," Tariceanu said.

.

The highly virulent H5N1 strain of bird flu can be transmitted to humans and is potentially fatal. So far no humans have been infected in Romania. — AFP

AVIAN INFLUENZA, HUMAN - ROMANIA: SUSPECTED
Date: Tue, 16 May 2006
    From: Mike Buman
Source: Business Financial News. 16 May 2006 [edited]
A young Romanian woman showing bird flu-like symptoms has been admitted to the contagious diseases hospital in Bucharest, the hospital's director Adrian Streinu-Cercel said. The 25 year old woman, who "has respiratory problems", comes from Sita Buzaului, a village in central Romania where bird flu is suspected, Streinu-Cercel said. Romanian health authorities are on the hunt for several dozen tonnes of chicken products produced at a farm in Codlea, central
Romania, where the deadly H5N1 strain of the flu was found last weekend. They fear the virus may have contaminated chicken products shipped to supermarkets.
The scare comes as the eastern European country awaits a decision Tuesday from Brussels about joining the European Union, with EU officials already worried about food safety in Romania.
Bird flu has been confirmed at 56 sites in Romania since the disease first surfaced in October 2005 in the country's Danube delta. There have so far been no confirmed cases of it spreading to humans.

I don't know if the entry 'who worked at the farm' is the same as the 'teen who worked at the farm' and unfortunately I didn't enter my url for reference.  And the first two entries ... I haven't seen any other mention for them either.  If I remember correctly, they were in one of the first posts regarding the quarantine.  I don't know the status of any of them ... haven't seen anthing about their condition, if they are still being evaluated, etc.  -k

It's a really long article.  Here are some highlights.  I have (7) listed on the Chart I'm keeping and this confirms (6) of them. ????? - Why is the Pres. in the hospital?

Bird flu confirmed in Bucharest

'The President, although hospitalised, is directly involved with the management of the crisis, while Gheorghe Flutur, surrounded by criticism from all sides, makes efforts to keep the situation under control.'     . . . . .

. . .  . We have the confirmation of the presence of the bird flu virus. At this moment, nobody can leave the isolated areas. The protection area has turned into first degree quarantine, with all the required measures, meaning traffic restrictions, culling of the chicken, disinfection,” stressed the District 2 mayor.. . . . .

. . . . .Around 2,500 persons live in the two quarantined areas from Bucharest. Those people will not be allowed to leave the isolated areas and will receive Tamiflu. Over 3,500 poultry (930 chicken and 181 pigeons) will be culled in District 2, and 2,420 chicken in District 4.. . . . .
. . . . . The number of Bucharest homesteads suspected of avian flu rose from two to six yesterday. A growing number of Bucharesters are afraid they might catch the disease . . . Doctor Adrian Streinu Cercel, the hospital’s director, said he saw virus influenza cases in humans as unlikely, yet he expected that many people would come to the doctor if they had the slightest symptoms that might appear related to the disease. For now, six persons presenting symptoms resembling those due to avian influenza are still being hospitalised at the Matei Bals Institute of Infectious Diseases. Among them a four-year old child that suffers from a pulmonary disease. Preliminary tests conducted on the six patients refuted the presence of the avian flu virus. Three of the patients have been submitted to additional testing in order that the suspicions are definitely ruled out.. . . . .

. . . . . The causes of the appearance of the bird flu in several counties from Romania and at the periphery of Bucharest are not known for the time-being,. . . . .

. . . . . .A number of 25 foci have been confirmed now in six counties . . . The number of suspicions has decreased from 31 to 26,. . . . .

. . . . . .The Social Democratic Party, which last week proposed the establishment of a parliamentary investigation committee on the bird flu crisis, wants to find out the culprits for this situation. According to Victor Ponta, author of the parliamentary investigation committee initiative, there is information that authorities had known about the virus ten days before it was made public. . . . . .

The President went in for disc hernia surgery and afterwards has suffered a 'severe neurologioal deficit'..whatever that is?

What interests me is WHY have they given 2,500 !!!! people tamiflu and in an article dated 15/5/06 they mention dosing a further 280 persons?? You can look through their archives and view backdated news

I'm not convinced that this is a health crisis in Romania.

The Romanians are NOT happy with their government. (And remember, they overthrew the last government around what -- 20 years ago? Something like that. If sufficiently po'd, they could do it again, and the government has to realize this.)

This may be a diversion tactic. Convince the populace that there's a huge crisis with bird flu and the officials are doing everything possible to solve the problem, "Hey, look, we're doing a great job taking care of this emergency!" and make 'em forget about various issues with government corruption and whatnot. Plus it's a great way to roll the army out, push the popuation around, and remind everyone who's in charge.

Charming.

OTOH, they could have people dying like flies & they've managed to keep it out of the newsmedia. But given that Romania does have high speed internet, and there's a sizable international population of Romanian emigrants who could spread the word ... I doubt it.

Wow am very impressed ReadyMom. Good job keeping all this straight.
This looks to be the next hotbed of activity for BF. And you can be sure the
quaratines there are due to outbreaks in the region and not just birds.
