In2ThinAir was expecting a major storm end of october-he may be correct. The "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Perfect_Storm_(film)" scenario could unfold for the US East Coast-states. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qM_gi38AhME.

With the 2017 hurricane season ending in short (from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Atlantic_hurricane_season)
The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season was a hyperactive and extremely destructive season, featuring 17 named storms, ranking alongside 1936 as the fifth-most active season since records began in 1851, and the most active since 2012. The season also featured both the highest total accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) and the highest number of major hurricanes since the 2005 season. All ten of the season's hurricanes occurred in a row, the greatest number of consecutive hurricanes in the satellite era. In addition, it was by far the costliest season on record, with a preliminary total of over $368.66 billion (USD) in damages, which is more than double the cost of 2005’s total, and nearly all of which was due to three of the season's major hurricanes — Harvey, Irma, and Maria. This season is also one of only six years on record to feature multiple Category 5 hurricanes, and only the second to feature two hurricanes making landfall at that intensity. This season is the only season on record in which three hurricanes each had an ACE of over 40: Irma, Jose, and Maria. DJ; Several islands in the Caribean have had that much damage that their economy (often with tourism as a main source of income) will remain serious effected for years or decades. https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/good-riddance-brutal-atlantic-hurricane-season-2017">https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/good-riddance-brutal-atlantic-hurricane-season-2017 and https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/active-2017-eastern-pacific-hurricane-season-ends , https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/2017-us-hurricane-damages-206-billion-highest-record Looking at hurricane history and translating the damage to todays cost 2017 has been the most damaging season for the US. With 2005 in third place and 2012 in place 6 there is a trend. Hurricanes can do a lot of (indirect and direct) damage to the US. The outlook for the 2018 hurricane season is even worse than the 2017 outcome with more heat in the ocean. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/weather/hurricane/fl-reg-hurricane-seasons-ends-20171129-story.html “Plus, hurricanes are like bananas — they come in bunches,” Masters said. “We saw hurricanes go bananas in 2004 [to] 2005, and it is reasonable to predict that me might see a similar 2-year spike in activity in 2017-2018.” https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/11/29/16623926/puerto-rico-death-toll-hurricane-maria-count">https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/11/29/16623926/puerto-rico-death-toll-hurricane-maria-count Over a 1000 people died due to "Maria" on Puerto Rico. https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/hurricane-maria-damages-102-billion-surpassed-only-katrina Also much damage on the US Virgin islands.

With the indirect number of people dead due to Maria proberbly far beyond a 1000 in Puerto Rico "Maria" is getting far beyond "Katrina" in duration-and slowly also in still rising death-toll. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Maria#Undercounting_of_fatalities.
Still large regions are without electricity and drinking-water. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-12-14/shocking-video-shows-what-everyday-life-puerto-rico-now The worst part may be the message the US government is sending: We don't care. Other hard hit islands in the region do get more help from the "mothecountries" France, UK, Netherlands. When they are independent states also (conditional) help is possible. http://dominicanewsonline.com/news/ Corruption in many regions is-as always-a problem. For Puerto Rico (and the US Virgin Islands) being part of the US is a problem-since the US does not provide enough help-other countries do not want to go into US "home problems".

The 2017 hurricanes did do a lot of damage to the US-leaving parts of Texas as a sort of chemical Fukushima https://www.thestar.com/news/world/2018/03/23/hurricane-harveys-toxic-impact-more-widespread-than-publicly-reported-records.html.
Puerto Rico still with major problems https://puertorico.liveuamap.com/en/2018/23-february-puerto-rico-disaster-declaration-extended-by and https://nypost.com/2018/03/22/puerto-rico-slow-road-to-recovery-after-hurricane-maria/slide-1/ The https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Atlantic_hurricane_season may start early with much heat already in some area's and the jet-stream going wild. https://www.ventusky.com/?p=38;-130;2&l=wind-10m showing developments both in the Atlantic http://cci-reanalyzer.org/wx/fcst/#gfs.natlan-ced.ws10 march 27) and Pacific http://cci-reanalyzer.org/wx/fcst/#gfs.pacific-ced.ws10 april 1) wich may need extra attention. (interesting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNOCDLXi66E hope not very realistic-sort of ad random model ? Not the 2018 storm-names.)

^DJ, the "bomb cyclones" striking the American North-East (Boston etc.) are similar to hurricanes, and all of these phenomena are being enhanced by global warming and climate change.
We don't seem to learn our lessons over here very well. Sad.

CRS,DrPH, you are correct. "Bomb cyclones" are getting very strong-I should rename this item; "Can extreme weather destroy the US" or something like that.
Of course other parts of the globe do get more extreme weather as well-some area's can deal with it much less than the US. (Bangla Desh is one of those countries-a major storm could flood most of that country). The US (citizens) can prepare for some extreme weather. Water (almost always-extreme winds could cause otherwise) goes to the lowest point so in case of flooding you better have some low grounds that can deal with large amounts of water. When you build more reservoirs you might be able to deal with dry periods as well. When politics fail companies, citizens, can do a lot.

With Florence, Helena and Isaac on their way the 2018 hurricane season could bring a lot of damage to the US.
Already extreme weather did do a lot of damage around the globe. Japan, China (a.o.) getting hit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imBMuYnaCGk In2thinair https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwwUdWsNckI and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ze1PpAC4ruY Robert Scribler https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GguFxZz4WmE Levi Cowan/Tropical Tidbit https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ (DJ-Since a lot of hurricanes from the Atlantic first move west then north and east "we" in Europe often deal with hurricanes as (strong) storms. Sometimes those hurricanes end up as storms in the Arctic, bringing high temperatures and wind-so increasing melt.) |

Several hurricanes and storms may become a major risk for the US the coming week (and some of those storms may reach Europe later on).
https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-09-09/hurricane-florence-could-cause-massive-damage-hundreds-miles-inland "Florence" in a worst case scenario could "hang out" for the North Carolina coast for 3 to 4 days as a cat-4 maybe even cat 5 hurricane. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvR0mDJps-k In2thinair is trying to describe the several "systems" on the move. https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/More-Flo-Latest-Helene-Isaac-Olivia-Paul-Mangkhut Hawaii, Texas, US Mariana Islands/Guam also facing "severe weather". https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/Hurricane-Florence-Expected-Rapidly-Intensify-Serious-Rainfall-Threat-US-East-Coast DJ-Hurricanes can destroy the US-they are on their way doing so in the coming years due to climate change. "Florence" may bring severe damage possibly to even New York-effecting global trade. Damages could/will go into the billions-long term damage not expressed in numbers will be that coastal area's will become area's not to put any money in-des-invest, stop activities-since the chances for flooding, wind etc. are making profit (or survival) hard. What could become "Joyce" may effect oil production in Texas, Gulf-of-Mexico. There have been in the past also earthquakes related to hurricanes (and the movement of very large amounts of oceanwater-so pressure on the earths crust). With-at present-already a lot of quakes-the (east and central) US may see M4+ quakes ? (Also related to fracking) |

DJ-"Florence" itself can be very destructive for the South-East US. It looks like "Joyce" may follow "Florence" at the end of the week via Texas and then-possibly- moving to South Carolina-Virginia. Maybe even followed-next week-by "Isaac".
https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ "Joyce" at this moment has a 70% chance of forming in 5 days in the Gulf of Mexico. "Isaac" is still in the Atlantic and expected to go between Venezuela and Cuba https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/030102.shtml?cone#contents As I mentioned earlier-there is some statistical coincidence of hurricanes with earthquakes. Movement of large amounts of water=movement of pressure on the Earth's crust. Several people also mentioned the risk for nuclear plants in the US. Nuclear (and other) plants need cooling water. Flooding can stop the influx of cooling water-overheating as a possible outcome. Also energyplants need electricity to function. At Fukushima the energygrid did brake down AND diesel-generators broke down-this caused the meltdowns. Such a scenario is a (small) possibility for the US. Extreme flooding and wind will most likely bring severe damage to the SE-US infrastructure. (Rail-)roads, electricity,(air)ports may be out of function for weeks or months. Also many healthissues involved-spread of disease, lack of medication and care. This may mean the coming influenza-winter-season may see more fatalities in that region. Prepare-stay safe-get out if you live in the area ! |

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-09-14/im-not-going-lie-im-scared-300000-lose-power-hurricane-florence-makes-landfall DJ-There is some discussion on wether hurricanes can damage a country for a longer time. For me-DJ-it should not be a question. You will not get investments when new storms are a certainty. We have to deal with climatechange NOW ! It is not only Trump who is failing. Most countries fail ! Many countries signed the Paris-climate-agreement and then still do not enough. Most likely it is the public that will have to make changes-lead the way ! (Good news seems to be that Florence seems to be the only hurricane damaging the US. Maybe Isaac could bring some damage next week. The Philippines are facing a major typhone. It could be far worse.) |

DJ-The several hurricanes active at the moment-both Atlantic and Pacific-seem to move towards the Arctic next week (and will bring us here in the Netherlands extreme warm temperatures +30C !!!). So far the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Atlantic_hurricane_season looks "mild". Still extreme weather is more than just hurricanes. Insurence-damages may be extreme this year-also drought (=wildfires) and extreme rain-events are above normal. https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/Florences-1-100-Year-Storm-Surge-Breaks-All-Time-Records (DJ-The loss of life in the US should and could have been prevented.
