I'm actually surprised that no rogue nation has pulled something like this before. Shooting down satellites is an old school game that the US can play too.

Imagine a Rogue nation with the ability to launch stuff into orbit, which isn't all that difficult to imagine in this day and age. Instead of a Satellite payload, it'll be a payload of ball bearings, BB's or just plain old garbage. With the tremendous speeds that stuff is whipping around up there, enough crap swirling around our planet would be like flying through a constant shotgun blast, only with 100,000 times the power!

A few years ago there was a meteorite shower that kept the Space Shuttle grounded. When you see a streak in the night, or a shooting star, it's usually about the size of sand or very small rocks. One good lick from a piece of sand could put a very large hole in the space shuttle, and thus they cancelled. Imagine if there's uncounted piles of steel shot in orbit, directly in satellite orbit altitude. Now you've got a situation where "Over the Horizon" communication is nearly impossible! GPS no longer works, XM radio is gone. Most of your television isn't happening anymore. Worse yet, the U.S.'s spy satellites are now floating space sieves, and conversely, everyone else's satellite systems are kaput too. We'd find that the world is a VERY dark place when we can't see or talk to the people on the other side of the world easily...

If I were in Iran's shoes I'd be thinking that I'm getting mighty tired of these people looking into what I'm doing here and just shut them all off.
