Last Update: Saturday, April 15, 2006. 8:06am (AEST) Dead Brisbane birds cleared of avian flu The Queensland Government says tests on two dead birds found this week in the Brisbane bayside suburb of Wynnum have ruled out the presence of bird flu. The state Disaster Management Group met yesterday afternoon to discuss concerns that a number of wild birds were found dead in the area. Premier Peter Beattie says the group has decided to enact a surveillance and examination program as a precautionary measure. But Mr Beattie says there is no cause for alarm. "Because of the need to take every precaution in dealing with the possibility of avian influenza, the management group decided that surveillance in the area around Wynnum should be intensified ... while further tests are conducted following the deaths of a small number of ibis and egrets in the area," he said. Mr Beattie says members of the public must not handle any dead birds and should report any multiple deaths immediately. http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200604/s1616594.htm |
