Families of fallen soldiers blast Donald Trump for saying past presidents never called them

DONALD Trump is under fire from the families of fallen soldiers after making an extraordinary claim about past presidents.

Trump claims Obama Didnt Call Fallen Soldiers' Families

The families of slain US soldiers have lashed out at Donald Trump, branding him a “fat f**king liar”, after he falsely said past presidents had never called them.

“When my brother was killed (in Iraq War), Pres Bush listened while I screamed at him & then held me as I sobbed, you fat f**king liar,” Delilia O’Malley tweeted at President Trump.

Her fury was echoed by Gold Star families and the staffers of former presidents, who accused President Trump of blatantly lying.

The Republican leader said in a news conference on Monday he had written letters to the families of four soldiers killed in an October 4 ambush in Niger and planned to call them, crediting himself with taking extra steps in honouring the dead properly.

“Most of them didn’t make calls,” he said of his predecessors. He said it’s possible that President Barack Obama “did sometimes” but “other presidents did not call.”

TRUMP DOUBLE DOWNS ON RANT

Mr Trump on Tuesday doubled down on his comments, saying reporters should ask his chief of staff, General John Kelly, if Mr Obama called him after his son, Robert Kelly, was killed by a landmine.

First Lieutenant Robert Kelly died in action while serving with the Marines in Afghanistan in 2010.

“You could ask General Kelly, did he get a call from Obama? I don’t know what Obama’s policy was,” Mr Trump said on Fox News Radio.

A White House official on Tuesday told NBC News that President Obama did not call General Kelly.

But ABC News in the US reports General Kelly and his wife attended a breakfast for Gold Star families at the White House in 2011 and sat at first lady Michelle Obama’s table.

The breakfast, hosted by the Obamas, was scheduled six months after the death of General Kelly’s son

‘DERANGED ANIMAL’

President Trump’s comments triggered a visceral reaction from many who witnessed past presidents grieve with the families of fallen soldiers.

“He’s a deranged animal,” Alyssa Mastromonaco, a former deputy chief of staff to President Obama, tweeted about President Trump. With an expletive, she called his statement in the Rose Garden a lie.

Mr Obama’s former White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that his boss would repeatedly “show his enormous respect ... for those who had paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country” through various visits and meetings as well as phone calls and letters.

Eric Holder, President Obama’s former attorney-general, called on Mr Trump to tell the truth.

“Stop the damn lying — you’re the President,” he tweeted
President George W. Bush, even at the height of two wars, “wrote all the families of the fallen,” said Freddy Ford, spokesman for the ex-president.

He said President Bush also called or met “hundreds, if not thousands” of family members of the war dead.

President Obama’s official photographer, Pete Souza, said he photographed the Democrat leader’s “meeting with hundreds of wounded soldiers, and family members of those killed in action.”

Others recalled his frequent visits with Gold Star families, and travels to Walter Reed, Dover and other venues with families of the dead, and with the wounded.

Retired General Martin E. Dempsey, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed these contacts, tweeting: “POTUS 43 & 44 and first ladies cared deeply, worked tirelessly for the serving, the fallen, and their families. Not politics. Sacred Trust.”

WHITE HOUSE DEFENDS TRUMP

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said later that President Trump “wasn’t criticising predecessors, but stating a fact.”

She argued that presidents didn’t always call families of those killed in battle: “Sometimes they call, sometimes they send a letter, other times they have the opportunity to meet family members in person.”

She said anyone claiming a former president had called every family was “mistaken.”

President Trump’s relations with Gold Star families have not always been smooth, dating from his belittlement of the parents of slain US soldier Humayun Khan, who was Muslim.

President Trump was angered when the soldier’s father, Khizr Khan, was given a platform to criticise him at the Democratic National Convention.

MCCAIN BLASTS ‘HALF-BAKED’ NATIONALISM

Senator John McCain has blasted “half-baked” nationalism and praised international co-operation in a speech on Monday night that appeared to contrast President Trump’s emphasis on putting “America first.”

The former POW and Arizona Republican called the US “the last best hope on earth” while giving an acceptance speech for the National Constitution Centre’s Liberty Medal, reports The New York Post, citing a Politico report.

Senator McCain said it was the country’s duty to lead instead of blaming others for our problems.

“To fear the world we have organised and led for three-quarters of a century, to abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe to refuse the obligations of international leadership and our duty to remain ‘the last best hope of earth’ for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other tired dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history,” he said.

Senator McCain added that the US has a moral obligation to continue our tradition of spreading American ideals and would suffer if that commitment was not met

He said: “We live in a land made of ideals, not blood and soil. We have a moral obligation to continue in our just cause, and we would bring more than shame on ourselves if we don’t. We will not thrive in a world where our leadership and ideals are absent. We wouldn’t deserve to.”

While not mentioning President Trump by name, Senator McCain’s speech was a sharp contrast to President Trump’s habits of shunning international institutions such as NATO and the United Nations.

This guy has the empathy of a cockroach. From the day after his inauguration when he showed up at my former agency, the CIA, in front of the wall of fallen heroes, and spoke about the size of his inauguration. Fast-forwarding now nine months, and he can’t figure out his responsibility not only as the Commander-in-Chief, but as the consoler-in-chief.”

Trump finally calls military widow, tells her 'he knew what he signed up for'

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/10/17/1707681/-Trump-finally-call-military-widow-tells-her-he-knew-what-he-signed-up-for

U.S. President Donald Trump told U.S. Army Sgt. La David Johnson's widow Tuesday that "he knew what he signed up for ...but when it happens it hurts anyway," when he died serving in northwestern Africa, according to Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami Gardens.

"Yes, he said it," Wilson said. "It's so insensitive. He should have not have said that. He shouldn't have said it."

It took the Idiot-in-Chief almost two weeks to come up with those words of comfort? Maybe he needs to go back to ignoring military deaths and stick to (cheating at) golf.

United States President Donald Trump has told a soldier's grieving widow on her way to meet her husband's casket that "he knew what he signed up for", according to a congresswoman who overheard the call.

Key points:

  • Sgt La David Johnson and three other soldiers were killed in a terrorist ambush in Niger on October 4
  • Mr Trump had not addressed soldiers deaths, criticised Obama and others for not calling families of death soldiers
  • Congresswoman who heard President's call to grieving widow weeks after death says call was insensitive

Sergeant La David Johnson, 25, of Miami Gardens, Florida, was killed in Niger earlier this month during an ambush carried out by Boko Haram and other extremists linked to ISIS.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson was riding in a limousine with the soldier's widow, Myeshia Johnson, and her family to meet the casket at Miami International Airport when she overheard the President's call and what she described on Twitter as his "insensitive comments".

"Basically he said, 'Well I guess he knew what he signed up for, but I guess it still hurts'," Ms Wilson told CNN.

"I heard what he said because the phone was on speaker."

The Florida Representative said Ms Johnson was already distraught, particularly after hearing the casket would be closed.

Johnson's body arrived home on Tuesday, nearly two weeks after his death on October 4.

He was one of four US soldiers killed when a joint patrol of American and Niger forces was ambushed by militants believed linked to the Islamic State group.

"This is a young woman who has two young children, who is six months' pregnant with her third child [and] she has just lost her husband.

"She was just told that he cannot have an open-casket funeral which gives her all kinds of nightmares of how his body must look, how his face must look. And this is what the United States President says to her?

"That is not something you say to a grieving wife."

Ms Wilson said Ms Johnson could not say anything in response to the President because she was crying.

"There were other family members in the car and they were all crying," Ms Wilson said.

"All she said when it was time to hang up was 'thank you, goodbye'."

The congresswoman's reaction to the call was to take the phone and "curse him out", but she was not handed the phone.

When the limousine arrived at the airport to greet the casket, a sobbing, Ms Johnson and her two children awaited the casket, alongside various local officials and law enforcement officers, who were on site to pay their respects.

Ms Johnson lay across the US flag draping her husband's casket, sobbing uncontrollably.

Niger ambush could be Trump's Benghazi, Wilson says

Ms Wilson said there are still questions about Sergeant Johnson's death that are yet to be answered.

"[The family] don't know why he was separated from the other soldiers," she said.

"This could turn out to be another Benghazi, and I have asked for an investigation.

"We want to find out exactly what happened and I'm expecting a classified briefing when I return to Washington to answer some of these mitigating questions that I can't answer on my own."

Ms Wilson said Sergeant Johnson, who mentored in her dropout prevention program for boys which she founded in 1993, was a hero in their community.

"There was no reason for the President to be so insensitive, not only to the family of this soldier, but the impervious rhetoric is disrespectful to the family of every soldier that has paid the ultimate price of freedom," she said.

Trump boasts he calls families where Obama, others did not

The call came after the US President falsely claimed his predecessor, Barack Obama, did not contact the families of US troops killed in the line of duty.

The claim drew a swift response from Mr Obama's foreign policy adviser Ben Rhodes, who said it was "an outrageous and disrespectful lie".

The President made the claims in response to questions about why he had not publicly spoken about the killing of the US soldiers in Niger two weeks ago.

"If you look at President Obama and other presidents, most of them didn't make calls," Mr Trump said during a news conference in the Rose Garden with the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell.

"A lot of them didn't make calls. I like to call when it's appropriate."

It's shameful how @realDonaldTrump politicizes issue of fallen soldiers to deflect criticism for not recognizing the 4 who died in Niger!

Nah, Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao and a host of petty warlords, even the biblical Joshua - who was guilty of genocide eight times, and a few others beat him to that dubious crown.

You notice I have not mentioned Hitler.  Hitler is still well in the lead over Trump, but they are running along the same track at similar speeds.  So if you hang on until they have been in power for the same length of time, we will see who wins the crown.  Trump might even change direction, or fail to finish.  You never know your luck.

Family of soldier slam Trump's disrespect

The mother of an Army sergeant killed in Niger says President Donald Trump, in a call offering condolences, showed "disrespect" to the soldier's loved ones as they drove to the airport to meet his body.

David Johnson was one of four American military personnel killed nearly two weeks ago whose families had not heard from Trump until Tuesday.

Democratic politician Frederica Wilson said Trump told the widow Johnson "knew what he signed up for".

The Florida Democrat said she was in the car with the widow, Myeshia Johnson, on the way to Miami International Airport to meet the body when Trump called.

Johnson's mother, Cowanda Jones-Johnson, told The Associated Press Wednesday that the congresswoman's account was correct.

Trump on Wednesday declared on Twitter: "Democrat Congresswoman totally fabricated what I said to the wife of a soldier who died in action (and I have proof). Sad!"

Wilson did not back down from her account, suggesting that Trump "never wants to take ownership" of a mistake.

Trump has made personal contact with some families of the fallen but not all. What's different is that Trump picked a political fight over who's done better to honour the war dead and their families.

He placed himself at the top of the list, saying on Tuesday, "I think I've called every family of someone who's died" while past presidents didn't place such calls.

But The Associated Press found relatives of two soldiers who died overseas during Trump's presidency who said they never received a call or a letter from him, as well as relatives of a third who did not get a call.

Proof is plentiful that Barack Obama and George W. Bush - saddled with far more combat casualties than the roughly two dozen so far under Trump, took painstaking steps to write, call or meet bereaved military families.

By Anthony Zurcher, senior North America reporter, BBC News

In US politics, nothing is off-limits any more.

After (inaccurately) swiping at his predecessors for not calling the family members of US soldiers killed in combat, Mr Trump is on the defensive over allegations he mishandled a call with a grieving widow.

The accuser is a partisan Democratic congresswoman and the president, not surprisingly, is pushing back hard. This controversy is spiralling towards the gutter.

Mr Trump made this bed, however. He was quick to cite the slain son of chief of staff John Kelly to justify his contention that Barack Obama didn't always make phone calls. Then there were the disparaging comments candidate Mr Trump made last summer about the parents of a Muslim-American soldier killed in Iraq.

The more this story drags on - and it will drag on - the more damage it could do to a president who wraps himself in the symbols of patriotism and the military, but is in danger of being viewed by the public as lacking empathy when it counts most.

An important presidential role is consoler-in-chief during times of tragedy. Successful politicians learn early that they need a human touch.

It's a job Mr Trump, the anti-politician, has little experience doing - and it shows.

presentational line

How did this row begin?

Mr Trump has been on the defensive over the deaths in Niger since a reporter asked him at the White House on Monday why he had still not called the families.

He provoked fury by falsely claiming that his predecessor, Barack Obama, and other former US presidents had not called the relatives of dead service members.

Media captionTrump denigrates Obama over false fallen soldier claim

Mr Trump also said he had written letters to the families of the four servicemen killed in Niger and planned to call them soon. The White House later said the president had spoken to the families but it did not say when.

On Tuesday, Mr Trump ratcheted up the row by suggesting that President Obama had not called the family of Mr Trump's chief of staff, Gen John Kelly, when his son was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.

The Associated Press says that like presidents before him, Mr Trump has made personal contact with some families of dead soldiers - but not all.

"What's different is that Trump, alone among them, has picked a political fight over who's done better to honour the war dead and their families," the American news agency reports.

"He placed himself at the top of this pantheon, boasting Tuesday that 'I think I've called every family of someone who's died' while past presidents didn't place such calls'."

Not the first time

This is not the first time Mr Trump has found himself in an imbroglio over US veterans.

As presidential candidate, he mocked Senator John McCain for having been captured and held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam after his aircraft was shot down.

Mr McCain has been praised for the bravery he showed during torture by his VietCong captors, and for his leadership of other American prisoners.

Mr Trump also engaged in a feud with the parents of decorated army captain Humayun Khan, a Muslim-American who was killed in Iraq in 2004.

First her son is killed.

Then her pregnant daughter in law is treated with all the sensitivity and kindness of Dr. Mengele.

Then she is dragged into a public spat with the President calling everyone else a liar to cover up his own lies.

Is there no peace for this poor woman?  Does the whole country not owe her and her family a debt that cannot be repaid?

Trump insulted Hilary Clinton, Barak Obama, George Bush and even a Republican war-hero, but they were politicians.  Even though the insults were false, if you can't take it don't go into politics.

This woman did not go into politics.  She did not chose this situation and she has lost a son.  Isn't that trouble enough?

Then again the family was black, and we all know how Trump feels about that. What a POS!
