It's February, this year is flying by already! I am so glad I stocked up on OTC meds because the shelves are bare of flu meds here where I live. This month I want to take inventory of what food I have and start restocking. What is everyone else working on?

I should work on pet supplies, but I have two large dogs and they eat a lot of food. I don't really have a lot of space to store large bags of dog food.

I'm stocking up on some tinned food that can be eaten without cooking, straight from the tin. This is since reading an article on here about an eyewitness account of The Spanish Flu in 1918 saying that many people died because they were unwell and no one would tend to them for fear of catching the disease. Many people died, not from the flu but from starvation and dehydration.

So I'm going to get in enough tinned food for 2 weeks of illness. I did a quick reccy around the supermarket to see what was there and am opting for things we would actually eat, not the tinned stews and meaty soups, which we wouldn't eat as the ingredients are so appalling. So I'm going to buy tinned corned beef, tuna, sardines and oysters. Also tinned fruit and baked beans. We could live on that and not starve. I'll be buying 10 tins of protein and 10 tins of fruit a week for the next few weeks.

In the same vein, I'm going to get some nut butters and some chocolate. That should cover all the bases short term.
Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

KiwiMum - I'm with you on that! We've got a two month supply of canned tuna, chicken, salmon, sardines, spam, chicken spread and deviled ham! We also keep a case of chicken noodle soup (my favorite) and tomato soup (her fav). I've made self rotating racks so that we load from the top and use from the bottom. This includes canned fruit, veg, beans, condensed milk, evaporated milk and tomato sauce, paste, chopped, etc! My real question is how to store flour, rice, cornmeal etc? We get weevils and pantry moths here and I've tried freezing, traps, and vacuum packing to control them but they still ruin a large proportion of our storage! Any suggestions? I have a wheat/corn grinder but have to grind fresh wheat as it tends to get rancid! I love fresh bread and would hate to do without!

Kiwimum.  For short term needs (up to 2 weeks) look at the "life expectancy" of food in your fridge. Much of it could last for weeks or months [well maybe a bit less if the power is out]

For example Cheeses can last a good long time, so will some processed meat (salami) and even cream (unopened).

Much of your regular goods could get you through most of a time of illness, or in if you are in a time of a complete crash allow you time to transition to a more modest diet of long term stored goods.

Cheese lasts indefinitely if it is "cheddared", dipped in wax and kept cool and ventilated (and away from mice).  Soft cheeses only make a couple of weeks.  Edwin is on a winner here.  Learning to consum your fridge, contents in order of life-expectancy is just another prepper skill.

I have also been stocking up and replenishing my canned goods. Canned chicken, veggies, soups, chili, peanut butter, etc.

KiwiMum, that is good information about the starvation/dehydration!

We started some seeds in the house this weekend, broccoli, tomatoes, sage and lavender so far. We have more things to start at a later time.

Satori- Thanks! I just ordered one! All the other large capacity filters I've seen are very spendy! This is the first one that looks like it will work at a reasonable price!
