around," Hays said. "Typically, it starts to present itself with just generally
not feeling good all over, then the fever will hit. The minute that fever hits,
go get treatment, get tested."

"Tamiflu doesn't necessarily kill the flu but it does
lessen the duration and severity of the virus."

Bowen said the flu shot may not
be 100 percent effective, but it often relieves flu symptoms in patients who do
get the virus.

Influenza in Alabama

Influenza-like
 illness (ILI) activity is currently above baseline for the state. For 
the week ending December 14, 2013, the geographic spread of ILI in 
Alabama was widespread. This level indicates that the percentage of 
patients with ILI was significantly higher in at least six Public Health
 Areas (PHAs) and there were positive influenza specimens from the same 
PHAs within the past three weeks. During the past three weeks, 26 (33%) 
of the specimens submitted to the Bureau of Clinical Laboratories (BCL) 
for influenza testing, were positive for influenza. All positive 
specimens were identified as Influenza A, 2009 H1N1.
