Hello everyone!  I see the flu outbreak in Australia and also see that they vaccine this year has a strain of  H3N2 in it so I am wondering if we should do the flu shot this year.  Historically, my kids had shots when they were under 6 but are 11 and 12 now and we haven't had shots in years nor have we had the flu really ever.  We have strep and  bronchitis and stomach bugs but don't really think we have ever gotten the flu, or it was mild enough that we didn't feel like we had it.  I do not really believe in the flu shot and have such mixed feelings about it.  I would love a healthy debate on whether I should get the shot for my family this year.  Thank you in advance for any advice/input.  Roni from Colorado

roni3470- Everyone has the right to an opinion! I get the shot every year cause, what the "H"? It can't hurt for more than a day or two! I got the enhanced shot two days ago and couldn't lift my arm above my shoulder until today! My question is, since they discovered a mutated stain of H3N2 in Hong Kong back in July will the currant vaccine even be effective? I know this years vaccine covers last years H3N2, the Michigan strain of A H1N1 and B Victoria. Older folks like me already have some protection from H3N2 cause a lot of us got it in '68. It's the younger people like our kids that I worry about! Teens and young adults feel invincible and with some strains of flu like H1N1, they're the most susceptible! Good luck with your decision!

My understanding with the flu shot is that if its in the same class that it can provide some protection against any strain in that class.  Not full protection but some.

That's why I get it every year! Some protection is better than none! Since all of our kids got out of school we never get sick anymore and my wife works in a hospital!

Just about everyone I personally know gets the flu shot. And it's pretty much a guarantee that within two weeks they'll get sick with something. Symptoms include those of a mild cold, headaches, depression or just generally feeling meh for a couple of days. In my mom's case (she has advanced COPD) she's landed in the emergency room within 10-12 days with severe breathing issues. Most people don't attribute their symptoms to the flu shot because they don't have flu symptoms. Not to mention, generally speaking we all lead busy lives and don't remember back that far.

None of this is surprising since your body is building antibodies to fight a virus you had deliberately injected into yourself. If, and this can be a BIG if, the shot matches exactly, if you come into contact with one of the stains, you are protected about 60% of not having any symptoms or having a much milder case. That being said, if it doesn't match, you might have a false sense of security and end up getting slammed later on. I can't tell you how many times I've mentioned avoiding someone who is coughing in a store and I'm told, "It's okay,I've had my flu shot." It's enough to make me want to pull my hair out.

Overall, the flu can be very miserable. And unless you have an underlying condition, you'll make it through and have immunity for life. The danger is if you get a secondary infection. Basically, that means pneumonia. The pneumonia vaccine has a much higher effective rate.and there is now a second one that covers more strains. They recommend that vaccine every five years.

Most people on this site are pro flu vaccine. And it works for them. I have a large family and we have been hit with the flu once. I can even pinpoint who gave it to us. One family from our church had their kid tested in one of the white tents set up during the last big outbreak. They were positive and yet brought the kid to church anyway. Needless to say the whole congregation got sick!

Yes,we were all sick as dogs. Yes, it took a long time to completely recover. No,no one got a secondary infection. Yes, I wanted to strangle the mother for bringing her sick kid to church, but I digress. I'm pretty sure because of the pneumonia vaccines things didn't get out of hand. I do have two kids with asthma that made it through without extra problems.

After all of that, each one of us has full immunity to that particular strain for the rest of our lives. We also have partial immunity to any mutations. With the flu shot you get to start all over again the next year.

I'm sure this will help make your choice as clear as mud 😁
