Has anyone come up with a solution to preventing flooded basements if the power is out for a long time?  I've considered getting a battery-powered back-up sump pump, but from the information I've read, they only work for a few days when used intermittently, or about 8 hours if used continuously.  We do have a generator, but that's also a short-term solution, as I don't want to be "advertising" our preparedness to everyone within hearing distance.  Any ideas?  Or should I resolve to having a flooded basement? Bird2k: I, too, have a sump and have been thinking the same thing. Is it possible, if you have the time and resources, to dig a french drain by the foundation, around the house or between your house and the groundwater flow? I know it's work and it might be a good long-term fix. Thoughts? D

I will have to research that...sounds like it might be a good project for my husband!  Thanks for the idea.
