Alphavirus while looking here for H5N1...

http://www.cdc.gov/EID/content/14/1/pdfs/vol14no01.pdf

Alphavirus
infections are spread by insect vectors such as mosquitoes.

Once a human is bit by the infected mosquito, the virus can gain entry into the bloodstream, causing viremia. The alphavirus can also get into the CNS where it is able to grow and multiply within the neurones. This can lead to encephalitis, which can be fatal.

Is is now....

Medically important alphaviruses
Virus Human Disease Vertebrate Reservoir Distribution
Sindbis Virus Rash, arthritis Birds Europe, Africa, Australia
Semliki Forest Virus Rash, arthritis Birds Africa
O'nyong'nyong virus Rash, arthritis Primates Africa
Chikungunya virus Rash, arthritis Primates, humans Africa, India, SE Asia
Mayaro virus Rash, arthritis Primates, humans South America
Ross River virus Rash, arthritis Mammals, humans Australia, South Pacific

Sindbis Virus

(SINV) is a member of the Togaviridae family, in the alphavirus subfamily.

The virus was first isolated in 1952 in Cairo, Egypt.

The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes (Culex or Aedes) SINV causes sindbis fever in humans and

the symptoms include arthritis, rash and malaise.

Sindbis fever is most common in South and East Africa, Egypt, Israel, Philippines and parts of Australia. Sindbis virus is an "arbovirus" (arthropod-borne) and is maintained in nature by transmission between vertebrate (bird) hosts and invertebrate (mosquito) vectors. Humans are infected with Sindbis virus when bitten by an infected mosquito. Recently SINV has been linked to Pogosta disease in Finland.

.............................

SINV is widespread in Eurasia, Africa, and Australia, but clinical infection only occurs in a few geographically restricted areas,

mainly in Northern Europe. In Europe, antibodies to SINV were detected from patients with fever, rash, and arthritis for the first time in the early 1980s in Finland.

The disease is also found in Sweden (Ockelbo disease) and in Russia (Karelian fever).

It became evident that the causative agent of this syndrome, named Pogosta disease, was closely related to SINV.

Since 1974, for unknown reason, the disease has occurred as large outbreaks every seven years in Finland. This study is to a large degree based on the material collected during the 2002 Pogosta disease outbreak in Finland.

MOSQUITOES are very dangerous...   all this .............from a BUG

Clinical Description

Arboviral diseases are clinically indistinguishable from one another.

( All names You See In Above Post including West Nile Virus)

They vary in terms of severity and age groups most heavily affected.

The most common manifestation is asymptomatic infection for

WNV, LAC and SLE; while EEE is noteworthy for its low case-infection ratio and its high case-fatality rate.

Other common clinical syndromes include 1) undifferentiated febrile illness, also referred to as ‘febrile headache;’ and 2) CNS infection, including aseptic meningitis, encephalitis or myelitis. Clinical presentations with nervous system involvement can be particularly variable and may involve the brain, spinal cord or nerves. Patient may present with syndromes mimicking a stroke or Parkinsonism, as well as tremors, movement disorders, neuritis, acute flaccid paralysis and/or SIADH.

Some definitions:

Acute flaccid paralysis: sudden onset of muscle weakness with hyporeflexia (decreased muscle reflexes) due to peripheral nerve or spinal cord involvement.
Aseptic meningitis: Symptoms of meningitis include fever, headache, photophobia, stiff neck and vomiting. Persons with aseptic meningitis have greater than 5 white blood cells in the spinal fluid and negative bacterial cultures.

Meningitis means ‘inflammation of the meninges.’ Meninges are the membranous lining around the brain.

‘Aseptic’ means that there are no bacteria found (in the spinal fluid).

Encephalitis: literally means ‘inflammation of the brain.’

These persons have fever and signs of central nervous system involvement, including: seizures, altered mental status, muscle weakness, sensory loss, or even movement disorders.

Cases of arboviral disease will now be classified as either neuroinvasive or non-neuroinvasive, according to
the following criteria:

Neuroinvasive disease

requires the presence of fever and at least one of the following:
acutely altered mental status
other acute signs of central OR peripheral neurologic dysfunction such as paresis,
paralysis, movement disorders, palsies, or sensory deficits
pleocytosis (increased WBC count) in CSF associated with illness clinically compatible with
meningitis (stiff neck, headache)

Common Clinical Description:

Meningitis characterized by fever, headache, stiff neck, and pleocytosis or encephalitis characterized by fever,
headache, and altered mental status ranging from confusion to coma with or without additional signs of brain
dysfunction (e.g., paresis or paralysis, cranial nerve palsies, sensory deficits, abnormal reflexes, generalized
convulsions, and abnormal movements).

Non-Neuroinvasive disease

(West Nile Fever) requires, at minimum:
the presence of fever (as measured by the patient or clinician)
the absence of neuroinvasive disease (above)
the absence of a more likely clinical explanation for the illness

Common Clinical Description:

A non-specific, self-limited, febrile illness characterized by the acute onset of fever, headache, arthritis

The number of deaths from a listeriosis outbreak that have been linked
to contaminated meat products has reached 20, Canadian health
officials said Wednesday [1 Oct 2008]. The latest death occurred in
Ontario, where 15 of the deaths have been reported, the Public Health
Agency of Canada said in a news release. 2 deaths occurred in the
western province of British Columbia, with one each in Alberta, Quebec
and New Brunswick. The health agency said 6 other deaths under
investigation may also have resulted from the outbreak.

The disease originated from the Toronto deli-meat processing branch
of Maple Leaf Foods plant, Canada's biggest food company. The
_Listeria_ bacterium was found deep inside slicing equipment,
according to company officials. The plant reopened 4 weeks after
being closed on 20 Aug 2008.

Several class-action suits are being planned as a result of the
outbreak, which has led to one of the most serious food crises in
recent Canadian history.

[The above news release reports 20 deaths but does not state the
total number of confirmed and suspected cases linked to the strain
discovered at the Maple Leaf Foods plant. A news release on 2 Sep 2008
<http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601082&sid=aHQGyjTAgrKA&refer=canada>
reported that there were 12 deaths among 38 confirmed cases of
listeriosis across Canada, with another 21 under investigation.
When
last posted by ProMED (Listeriosis, fatal, meat product - Canada (03)
20080828.2701), there were 12 fatalities among 26 cases of the
disease from the same strain of listeria that was identified at a
Toronto plant run by Maple Leaf Foods Inc., with an additional 29
cases under investigation.

The incriminated Maple Leaf Foods products were recalled in late
August 2008. With an incubation period for listeriosis of up to 70
days, more cases related to the outbreak can be expected.
A detailed
discussion of listeriosis can be found in ProMED-mail posting no.

Kilt2 you are right. It is a snowball effect. I am not sure where it ends...I know for the great depression that lasted I think 10 years?...World War 2 ended it. I have a feeling we are going to war in the next year or so...so this too shall be resolved. I sure hope that is not the case but they say if you want to know the future look at history(or somethiing like that)

Fed Leads Global Coordinated Rate Cut, Eases by Half-point-
Reuters

The Federal Reserve led a coordinated round of global official rate cuts on Wednesday, easing by a half-point, as did the European Central Bank, Bank of England and Swiss, Canadian and Swedish banks. In an attempt to stem unprecedented global market turmoil, the Fed cut its key federal funds lending rate by half a percentage point to 1.5 percent and also lowered its discount rate by the same amount to 1.75 percent.
