Picked up a 5 gal bucket with lid at Home depot for $7.  A Toilet seat for $5.  Plastic bags (tall kitchen size  22 for $1 (bought 10 boxes)) .  Total investment, $22.  If the sewers back up, or the water is offline, I now have an emergency toilet facility.

One more thing off my list.

Re: 5 gl. buckets--Having to pay $7 for a bucket is a rip-off!! Go to your grocery stores--ours get lots of things sent to them in them & they just throw them away. Check out other businesses, too--who knows who uses them & has them lying around.

Purchased 8' of 1/2" diameter clear plastic tubing for syphoning.  It is easier to do when you can see it coming.  The pros here will no doubt poke fun at me but the taste of gas is . . .

hope you are feeling better muskrat..

i have been prepping like mad this weekend- new store opened and sales are stellar. cans of potatos, veggies, fruit, soup, lots more rice, juice, soda ( on sale great price) dried beef, can pasta, dry pasta, sauce, chicken & beef broth, peanut butter, flour, sugar, can pie filling, & seeds.my only problem is i am becoming a can food nazi- i find myself wigging out when my hubby or even when i need to use something out of the pantry..i have been avoiding making certain meals if it means i need to delve into my stock... what can i say weird ...

I visited the "barrel guy". About two acres of food grade 55 gallon plastic barrels for $10. 15 gallon plastic Dr.pepper syrup barrels $15.00. I will be going to pick up a few soon. The 15 gallon ones would be perfect for fuel, if stored away from home, shed etc.

Check out your local restuarants.......most of them get items like pickles in large 5 gallon buckets.  I am sure if you ask they will give them to you.

Fla_Medic, I bought exactly the same thing, bucket w/ seat, already put together, at my local outdoor store for 14.99!! I am going to purchase bags at shoprite tomarrow! Shoprite brand is very cheap (med size). I also hit Kmart today. I got socks and undies for my guys bogo & 6 bottles of germ-X,pringles on sale ($1), and a lg. thermos. I spent 2 hrs. in the dentist's chair and I will be happy when the work is finished. One visit left and my dental prep will be done (I think). I need to take a tylenol now, novicaine as worn off.

Fritz:

Spending tomorrow at the endodontist's with a root canal that has gone south in a big way.  I hope they give me antibiotics and pain meds and tell me to come back in a week.  I am spending the rest of the day, depending on how I feel doing the rest of the preps....the check is here and I'm getting it ALL.

ps  I get called fritz all the time as my last name starts with "fitz"

and a reminder from the press tonight on this topic....

If a pandemic strikes, ARE YOU READY?
By Anita Manning, USA TODAY
If you had to be on your own, in your home, for two weeks or more, what would you need to have on hand to survive?

That's the question Americans should consider now, before the next flu pandemic strikes, health experts say. "If we have a pandemic, stores are going to run out of food," says Arnold Monto, an epidemiology professor at the University of Michigan. "It would be a good idea to have things available."

Judging from previous pandemics, which occurred during 1918, 1957 and 1968, Monto says the worst waves of illness seem to pass through communities in a matter of six to eight weeks.

Robin Tinay Sallie, AP
Water: A gallon per day, stored in clean plastic contaiers.

Computer models suggest about 30% of people could be infected, but not all at the same time, Monto says, so keeping two weeks' supply of food and other necessities is reasonable.

Pandemic plans call on people to practice "social distancing," which means keeping away from other people's germs. Schools and day care centers, which are like petri dishes for germ incubation and dissemination, could be closed.

Sporting events and other large gatherings could be canceled. The "kiss of peace" at church might become the "wave of peace," and shaking hands would become socially unacceptable, at least for a while.

Tina Fineberg/ Bloomberg News
Medical needs: Stock up on fever reducers and other medical needs such as toilet paper, hand-washing supplies.

Experts say Americans should plan for interruptions or delays in services. Banks might close, hospitals could be overwhelmed, postal service could be spotty and power might go out.

Michael Bell of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises families to talk about what they would need if they were told to avoid gatherings or the grocery store. "Ask 'What would we need?' " he says. "If you have a large number of children, make sure you have supplies for them on hand. If your school district decides to have people stay home from school, how is the family going to manage? Things like that are important to consider."

Checklists provided by government agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Homeland Security, are helpful but should to be tailored to the needs of individuals and families.

Among the most important bits of advice, Bell says, is to make sure everyone in the family practices good hygiene by covering sneezes and washing hands frequently.

"Good evidence shows hand hygiene in a community can reduce infection from all causes."

Hi Zumble, Hope all goes well at the dr.s. Get it done and overwith. That tooth scene in the Tom Hanks movie Castaway really made an impression on me!! lol  Do you really plan on taking the meds or saving them? I had to go on antibiotics a few weeks ago and the urge to store was really strong. I resisted and took them and I'm glad cause I think I really needed them. BTW, fritz is just a nickname that my husband started calling me shortly after we met and it just stuck around. I think he calls me that when I'm acting wacky. Maybe it's like the fridge is on the "fritz"? dunno, don't think he knows either.

Best of luck tomarrow!!!

Cosmicpixie you are the 1st person, that I've heard say they are sick of all this prepping .  I have been sick of it but continue because I know it's needed.  We just went thur Katrina, and things are still not back to normal from that.  Still cleaning up from that and getting repair work done.  Preparing for hurrican season which is only 3 months away, and preparing for bird flu.  I think i will take a day or two next week and prepare to hold on to my mental sanity.

Fla_Medic...you might also go to a camping store and pick up some of the "blue chemical" that they sell...also, places like "survival acres" carries it....that way, if you have to use that bucket, you will have a sanitizing agent in it for both health ahd aethestic reasons..

After watching the back-to-back National Geographic special followed by
the Fox News special Sunday night, I thought I'd better take a closer look
at my supplies sooner rather than later. I think it hit me a little harder at
the time because, as we were watching it, my wife was shivering with a
103-degree fever in a rapid onset of this season's nasty "regular" flu. The
doctor told her today that he's seeing a big increase in flu patients in the
last couple of weeks.

Since the kids were out of school for President's Day, I took the day off
work to take care of them and the sick wife, and managed to fit in a good
inventory of where I'm at with preparation. I've got gaps that I know
about, but found one biggie I wasn't expecting: food.

I had been assuming that since I could barely get the doors closed on the
kitchen pantry, that we surely had enough food to last for months. After
deciding to re-organize and inventory, I found out how wrong I was.

Long story short: I found space wasted by non-food items, near-empty
boxes and waaaay too much junk food. After cleaning out, I found we
really had only about two weeks of real meals on hand. What a wake-up
call!

I stripped every cabinet in the kitchen, discarded the junk, optimized
space, and created a very detailed shopping list. I can't afford to buy
everything at once, but tonight's grocery run (thanks to a 2-for-price-
of-1 canned veggie sale) has at least moved us from (maybe) two weeks
of meals to a good, solid eight-week supply. When all space is utilized as
planned, my family should be perfectly comfortable for 12-14 weeks.

So that's a few more checkmarks on my to-do list. It'll be another week
before I'll have time to do more, but I'm at least satisfied with today's
progress.

muskrat, great idea.  I've just undergone some medical tests, too.  I could have put them off, but come a pandemic, I might not be able to get them done (or any treatment) for a couple of years.  Found out that I have severe carpal tunnel syndrome. Will get surgery ASAP (one hand at a time).

If you haven't had a checkup. Get one.  Includes dentist.

And food allergies are very common, particularly for wheat. Many people don't know they have it.  Their symptoms are mild and `non-specific', so they don't make that connection.  If you're planning on laying large supplies of wheat, it would be good to know if you're allergic.

Hmm...all this toilet talk. I need some kitty litter and a bucket and trashbags I guess :-) Kitty litter is the cheapest smell absorber, I'm told.

I stocked up on bleach and paper products that were on sale. I'll just use bleach and paper towels instead of all the fancy antibacterial stuff so need LOTS.

I bought a Walmart version of Primatene Mist.

Bought some marked down Valentines day candy to taste. It's good. I'll go back and get more, but will hide it from my guys and just bring a little out at a time. It's good for a year. 11 ounces of chocolate for 37 cents is a good deal :-) Hmm...I think I will chop some up and use it in cookies! Never mind. They will never know I have it :-) THey'll just know they have good cookies :-)

8 bottles of shampoo for 77 cents each on sale :-)

Raisins are the only dried fruit I can afford. I bought 2 boxes.

No more money till the 1st. I've got to be careful what I pick up till then!

I'm prepping for more than Bird flu. Just general prep and keeping my grocery bill down by buying in bulk when on sale. It's becoming a way of life :-)

My stash is growing and my trips to the grocery store less frequent, as I seldom run out of things anymore. All the time I'm saving from running to the store EVERYDAY, I'm using to reorganize my house and get rid of stuff we do not need. Half of prepping is throwing away useless crap :-0

Oh, yeah I bought an insulated carafe. I'm getting into the habit already of conserving cooking fuel. I make a quart of tea and sip it for hours. It only uses one tea bag too :-) I was using a thermos, but I'm wearing out the screw top, and I need it to make my yogurt from powdered milk, but it's always full of tea :-)

Check around on construction sites for the fives with lids.  Drywall compound and paint is packed in 5 gallon bails and they throw them away all the time.  Dried paint peels out easily and drywall compound washes out with water and a damp sponge.  I'm in the construction business so I already had a stock for free, but I told some friends about this and they drove out to a housing addition near here and just came back with over 100 5's with lids.  They'll probably spend the rest of the afternoon washing them out, but it'll be worth the 500-700 dollars they saved, which they can spend on other things they can't scrounge up for free.

They also snagged up some metal ones, that are used for a oil based paint known in the industry as "dry fog".   The guys and gals said they'll be using those for fuel storage.

Fritz, third time trying to post this message today...The endodontist says that the bone is infected, so I'm having the tooth pulled on Saturday.  and oh, yeah...thank the gods for the antibiotics....this thing hurts.....

hopefully with this thing out, maybe all those non specific complaints of "I don't feel good" will go away.

Ladies....please remember to pick up the yeast infection medication of your choice during your preps.  Trust me.

Hoping all those nice things I've heard about nitrous are true.

also, reading this thread:

Thanks kaydoe, I hadn't thought about the generic for primatine...my adult son has asthma, and usually does just fine without meds, but I'm getting some anyway.

and on the toilet paper issue...I simply cannot sore enough of the stuff....so I decided to go the outhouse route and when needed, will place a telephone book out there.  At least the print doesn't smear the way newsprint does...or so I've been told.

Ladies there is a medicine by the name of AZO Yeast.  It relieves Symptoms of Vaginal Yeast Infections.  It can be used daily  1 tablet to prevent a yeast infection or you can take 3 tablets daily if you have a yeast infection.

I shopped the sales at the local grocery store today.   I am adding things daily to my stash it seems.  Today I added:  10 cans of Treet, 6 cans of tomatoes, 6 cans of kidney beans, 48 rolls of toliet paper, 2 bottles of laundry detergent and other various items that I combined my cents off coupons to purchase for a little of nothing.  Our grocery store doubles cents off coupons.

WOW onions? I have heard of peppers but onions, how I love them.

I guess you have to avoid foods like canned Chili, stew, anything with a mixture of foods.  Buy yourself canned tomatoes and kidney beans and make your own chili?

Anyone else got ideas??

Today I prepared mentally. I chilled at home and renewed myself.

I was actually home with the stomach flu but I took advantage of the time to prep my mind and spirit.

Came back from a few days away dealing with elderly parent issues. Shopped small town goodwill and kmart. Got: shampoo, thermos (2), next size clothing for kid, underwear, socks, preschool workbooks, stickers, inexpensive toys, bleach, dish detergent, toothpaste, spaghetti, jam, garbage bags, more that I can't remember yet.

Am putting away 10# cans of dehydrated food that arrived. Have 49 cans.

Got next size winter outerwear for kid....

Wow  Loopylou, you have been thinking, that's a really good start. Much better than my first trip.   We won't go there.

Hi Muskrat - Thanks for the home remedies, I love that kind of stuff - printed it out for future use.

Was it you that said that we needed to freeze our grains, etc. for two weeks? I was told 72 hours at my local health food store, then I heard 1 week somewhere and then two weeks?  Aghhhhh....I've already stored most. What do you think?

I just discovered we have a new Dollar Tree in town :-) THey had chafing dish fuel 2/$1.00 I bought 20 :-) Now I can cook without electricity for over 40 hours :-) I feel so much better :-)

I also bought a can of carrots, strawberries, pears and canned meat to try. I cannot afford to stock up without tasting first! If they are good, I'll buy some more.

Walmart had leftover peanutbutter filled chocolate for 37 cents an 11 ounce bag. I bought a bag yesterday to try. It was good. I 'm going to mostly use it cut up in baking. I bought 21 bags :-) I'm making cookies tonight, but want to find a chocolate chip muffin recipe, that uses oil. I prefer to use corn oil in baking, but it doesn't work well in cookies. Cheaper than butter and healthier than margerine and shortening :-)

Good shopping day!

I haven't done any shopping for a few days ,but have pretty much done it all now, just a few more trips to go.to tell the truth I've been feeling a bit depressed about going into my savings and I feel a bit silly with 6 huge water butts sat in my hallway (awaiting partner to move them to garden).I wonder if anything will really happen in the way it is feared it will, and sometimes think I've been mad and impulsive, but then most of the time I feel like I've acted sensibly and that it actually may well happen. My entire wardrobe is stacked with food, and they are BIG wardrobes,so every time i go in for clothes i see 500 tins staring back at me and BIRD flu is in my head every day, which is another thing I don't like but have to get used to.Now I've got to spend even more money on kids stuff and my house is in chaos.

Moan over.
