ANTI-TERROR bosses last night hailed their latest ally in the war on terror — the BLACK DEATH.

At least 40 al-Qaeda fanatics died horribly after being struck down with the disease that devastated Europe in the Middle Ages.

Epidemic ... in Britain in 1665

Epidemic ... in Britain in 1665

The killer bug, also known as the plague, swept through insurgents training at a forest camp in Algeria, North Africa. It came to light when security forces found a body by a roadside.

The victim was a terrorist in AQLIM (al-Qaeda in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb), the largest and most powerful al-Qaeda group outside the Middle East.

It trains Muslim fighters to kill British and US troops.

Now al-Qaeda chiefs fear the plague has been passed to other terror cells — or Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.

One security source said: “This is the deadliest weapon yet in the war against terror. Most of the terrorists do not have the basic medical supplies needed to treat the disease.

“It spreads quickly and kills within hours. This will be really worrying al-Qaeda.”

Black Death comes in various forms.

Bubonic Plague is spread by bites from infected rat fleas. Symptoms include boils in the groin, neck and armpits. In Pneumonic Plague, airborn bacteria spread like flu.

It can be in the body for more than a week — highly contagious but not revealing tell-tale symptoms.

The al-Qaeda epidemic began in the cave hideouts of AQLIM in Tizi Ouzou province, 150km east of the capital Algiers. The group, led by wanted terror boss Abdelmalek Droudkal, was forced to turn its shelters in the Yakouren forest into mass graves and flee.

The extremists supporting madman Osama bin Laden went to Bejaia and Jijel provinces — hoping the plague did not go with them.

A source said: “The emirs (leaders) fear surviving terrorists will surrender to escape a horrible death.”

AQLIM boss Droudkal claims to command around 1,000 insurgents. Training camps are also based in Morocco, Tunisia and Nigeria.

AQLIM bombed the UN headquarters in Algiers in 2007, killing 41. Attacks across Algeria last year killed at least 70 people.

In an interview last July, Droudkal boasted his cell was in constant contact with other al-Qaeda “brothers”.

Who or what infected them in the first place?
and how many are walking around like typhoid mary infecting  the unsuspecting general public.
Also how many of these terrorists are walking around a city near you,
This is disturbing.

Yes, it  (and N Korea with 6 nukes) is quite worrisome.

I think that we are in for a rough 4 years.  every on will want to "test" BO.

But the bio terror is the thing that would be unstoppable.  It is just a matter of time and if we fight it here or there.

Can this story be believed until we know who diagnosed plague? ...there are 3 different types of plague.  well...I don't think we need to use it as a weapon...if the twits lived in a cave with rats.

We get cases of plague almost every year in the Southwest. It is easily cured now in any modern society. If they got it, it was more then likely because they dwell in caves amongst critters that still catch it and spread it, not because we dropped it.

Bubonic Plague is easily treatable and preventable it has been around for thousands of years its not a virus but a microbe,  The infected area could be clean with pesticides that kills flies the main carriers of the disease. It is best used against populations that leave in the unsanitary conditions and lack basic medical care.

There is speculation that this infection is the result of a failed bio-weapon experiment by the terrorists. 'Failed' of course, is a relative term. The worrisome aspect of this is this: How many other bio-weapon efforts are underway - and what happens when/if they have one of those 'oops!' moments in the lab?

The problem is from BBC sources and other links we find the sweeps of the caves in Afghanistan found them completely empty except for a few weapons caches. Basically offering bounties to turn in anyone from the Al Queda - local residents were grabbing anyone in sight-especially from an separatist group.. like Taliban.

The official number those in the Al Queda as blood sworn members to OBL is 300. There are alleged supported the existence of a powerful global network with placed cells all over the globe is a myth.

This myth has been used by many politicians- especially during the last 8 years to justify a host of new legislation and civil rights and privacy abuses.

Much like the hero Logan in Logan's run concerning the alleged place where people went to after being renewed and the computer blew up - there is no sanctuary. The Mujaheddin were originally trained fighters by the U.S. to kick Russia out of Afghanistan. The training camps in Afghanistan were never for attacking America - they were for spread the Muslim religion to countries like Chechnya.

This is a little lengthy but the documentary made several years ago so far as can tell,
has never been seriously challenged as to its accuracy. Will the truth never be told?
This is a one hour documentary - long. You can use scroll to watch parts. So far, there is
no part of this video that appears to be untrue. If true, the implications of what has occurred in the last eight years is incredible. Now that a new President is in power -
perhaps finally we will finally see - change. Beyond the power of nightmares and fear - to change a fist to an outstretched hand - and melt a tank to build a plow. When we stop hating those who are different - when we separate our real enemies, greed, corruption, and lies - from phantoms - we will grow as a nation - learn to live at peace with other nations- and stop making money by frightening our citizens as if they were little children and scaring them with nightmares.

http://polidics.com/cia/top-ranking-cia-operatives-admit-al-qaeda-is-a-complete-fabrication.html

BBC’s killer documentary called “The Power of Nightmares“. Top CIA officials openly admit, Al-qaeda is a total and complete fabrication, never having existed at any time. The Bush administration needed a reason that complied with the Laws so they could go after “the bad guy of their choice” namely laws that had been set in place to protect us from mobs and “criminal organizations” such as the Mafia. They paid Jamal al Fadl, hundreds of thousands of dollars to back the U.S. Government’s story of Al-qaeda, a “group” or criminal organization they could “legally” go after. This video documentary is off the hook…

An investigation in 2004 found NO credible connection or working together of Iraq and the

Al Queda.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A47812-2004Jun16.html

The Sept. 11 commission reported yesterday that it has found no "collaborative relationship" between Iraq and al Qaeda, challenging one of the Bush administration's main justifications for the war in Iraq.

Along with the contention that Saddam Hussein was stockpiling weapons of mass destruction, President Bush, Vice President Cheney and other top administration officials have often asserted that there were extensive ties between Hussein's government and Osama bin Laden's terrorist network; earlier this year, Cheney said evidence of a link was "overwhelming."

But the report of the commission's staff, based on its access to all relevant classified information, said that there had been contacts between Iraq and al Qaeda but no cooperation. In yesterday's hearing of the panel, formally known as the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, a senior FBI official and a senior CIA analyst concurred with the finding.

The staff report said that bin Laden "explored possible cooperation with Iraq" while in Sudan through 1996, but that "Iraq apparently never responded" to a bin Laden request for help in 1994. The commission cited reports of contacts between Iraq and al Qaeda after bin Laden went to Afghanistan in 1996, adding, "but they do not appear to have resulted in a collaborative relationship. Two senior bin Laden associates have adamantly denied that any ties existed between al Qaeda and Iraq. We have no credible evidence that Iraq and al Qaeda cooperated on attacks against the United States."

One would hope with a new administration, many of the oft repeated urban legends to advance legislation and incredible powers which literally thrash judicial process (why the prison was closed after the inauguration speech) and an entire war with no credible intelligence of WMDs ever present in Iraq.

OBLs main strategy to topple the U.S. was  to wipe out the economy. He wrote this, as he does in his daily journal, which he organizes his "plans" many years ago.  More recently it was commented there was little need for an aggressive terrorist attack on the U.S. because the money people on Wall Street had sacked the treasury and people for trillions of dollars which would lead to an all out depression and soaring jobless rates.

With the fall of the Soviet Union there was no bogyman any more - little reasons for arms escalation, and the major commodity sold in almost secret from every super power to others, arms and weapons.  Without an economy with worthless paper money and constant war -Western civilization would crumble. We must learn to build rather destroy, to repair rather than bomb.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article3346386.ece

Abu-Tariq, al-Qaeda leader

“There were almost 600 fighters in our sector before the tribes changed course 360 degrees . . . Many of our fighters quit and some of them joined the deserters . . . As a result of that the number of our fighters dropped down to 20 or less.”

comment: there are numerous groups of Muslims with anti-American sentiment and some of these blow themselves up. Every terrorist incident is not hooked to the Al Queda and hundreds of times it has been print "has rumored to be linked to the Al Queda" with no proof at all.

So before you start killing off OBL and the AQ with a new germ warfare, you will have to get beyond the empty caves in Afghanistan, the world's most wanted leader that may not even be alive, and  who never really led the group or even related to the AQ until the name was made up and related to him. Many facts that would indicated there was little direct connection to 9/11. The Al Queda name was not made up by Arabs, it was made up by Western Civilization.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/03/13/alqaeda.saddam/index.html

The Pentagon stated that Iraq and the AQ were not connected.

So, as per the speech we just heard, let us get away from fear mongering, and focus on the real threats to our country, the greedy money establishment which has been bleeding the tax payer and sick and handicapped for decades.

Considering the lack of damage to the U.S. by even a single bomber in over 7 years connected to AQ - we either have a legion of super heroes Intelligence - or the threat of AQ has been incredibly exagerated.

http://petras.lahaine.org/articulo.php?p=46&more=1&c=1

So despite the ever present sword hanging above the U.S. of nuclear bomb set off by terrorsts or some finally organized group which we must be fearful of -

Some in Afghanistan,  after the battles escalate and more troops are moved there - do truly grow weary and wonder  what are we doing there - What are we doing in many countries? Shouldn't we be at home tending to some of the greatest problems in history in America?

I'll bet you that our new President will tell you that. Its time to get our people home from Iraq and start tending our own garden and dealing with our own corruption and really figure out how to spend a trillion dollars wisely. This would be a first in American history.
That much money actually being put to good use to help America grow rather than go into the pockets of banks which will not even lend out the money.

You asked for change.

Consider.

Much of what you have been told for years is absolutely untrue.

From the Centers for Disease Control:

PLAGUE VACCINE

Plague vaccines ** have been used since the late 19th century, but their effectiveness has never been measured precisely. Field experience indicates that vaccination with plague vaccine reduces the incidence and severity of disease resulting from the bite of infected fleas. The degree of protection afforded against primary pneumonic infection is not known. Persons exposed to plague patients who have pneumonia or to Yersinia pestis *** aerosols in the laboratory should be given a 7- to 10-day course of antimicrobic therapy regardless of vaccination history. Recommended antimicrobials include tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, or streptomycin.

The plague vaccine licensed for use in the United States is prepared from Y. pestis organisms grown in artificial media, inactivated with formaldehyde, and preserved in 0.5% phenol. The vaccine contains trace amounts of beef-heart extract, yeast extract, agar, and peptones and peptides of soya and casein.

Serum antibody to Fraction I capsular antigen, as measured by the passive hemagglutination (PHA) test, is correlated with resistance to Y. pestis infection in experimental animals. A comparable correlation between PHA titer and immunity probably occurs in humans.

Following the primary series of 3 injections, about 7% of individuals do not produce PHA antibody, and a few fail to develop a titer of 128, the level correlated with immunity in experimental animals. PHA titers should be determined for individuals who have an unusually high risk of infection or who have a history of serious reactions to the vaccine in order to govern the frequency of booster doses. Such testing can be arranged through state health departments. Since plague vaccination may only ameliorate illness, whenever a vaccinated person has a definite exposure, prophylactic antibiotics may be indicated whether or not an antibody response has been demonstrated.

Vaccine Recipients

Vaccination is recommended for:

All laboratory and field personnel who are working with Y. pestis

organisms resistant to antimicrobics, 2) Persons engaged in aerosol experiments with Y. pestis and 3) Persons engaged in field operations in areas with enzootic plague where preventing exposure is not possible (such as some disaster areas).

Selective plague vaccination should be considered for:

Laboratory personnel regularly working with Y. pestis or

plague-infected rodents, 2) Workers (for example, Peace Corps volunteers and agricultural advisors) who reside in rural areas with enzootic or epidemic plague where avoidance of rodents and fleas is impossible, and 3) Persons whose vocation brings them into regular contact with wild rodents or rabbits in areas with enzootic plague.

Primary Vaccination

All injections should be given intramuscularly.

Adults and children greater than or equal to 11 years old: The primary series consists of 3 doses of vaccine. The first dose, 1.0 ml, is followed by the second dose, 0.2 ml, 4 weeks later. The third dose, 0.2 ml, is administered 6 months after the first dose. If an accelerated schedule is essential, 3 doses of 0.5 ml each, administered at least 1 week apart, may be given. The efficacy of this schedule has not been determined.

Children less than or equal to 10 years old: The primary series is also 3 doses of vaccine, but the doses are smaller (Table_1). The intervals between injections are the same as for adults.

Booster Doses

When needed because of continuing exposure, 3 booster doses should be given at approximately 6-month intervals. Thereafter, antibody levels decline slowly and booster doses at 1- to 2-year intervals, depending on the degree of continuing exposure, should provide good protection.

The recommended booster dosages for children and adults are the same as the second and third doses in the primary series. However, if serious side effects to the vaccine occur, their severity may be reduced by using half the usual dose. The primary series need never be repeated for booster doses to be effective (Table_1).

SIDE EFFECTS OF VACCINE

Primary vaccination may result in general malaise, headache, fever, mild lymphadenopathy, and erythema and induration at the injection site in about 10% of recipients. These reactions occur more commonly with repeated injections. Sterile abscesses occur rarely. Rare cases of sensitivity reactions manifested by urticarial and asthmatic phenomena have been reported.

PRECAUTIONS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS

Plague vaccine should not be administered to anyone with a known hypersensitivity to any of the constituents, such as beef protein, soya, casein, and phenol. Patients who have had severe local or systemic reactions to plague vaccine should not be revaccinated.

The safety or efficacy of vaccination with plague vaccine during pregnancy has not been determined, and therefore it should not be used unless there is a substantial risk of infection.

For a current listing, consult the most recent issue of the World Health Organization's Weekly Epidemiological Record; current information is also available from the Quarantine Division, Center for Prevention Services, Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta, Georgia 30333. ** Official name: Plague Vaccine *** The designation Yersinia pestis is used advisedly since there is reportedly a recommendation by the International Committee on Systematic Bacteriology to reclassify this organism as Yersinia pseudotuberculosis ssp. pestis (WHO. Weekly Epidemiological Record 1981;56:399).

I  was shocked to just read this article on the plague. I never knew that it was still so deadly. I am beyond stunned that with the unbeliievable advancements in technology and medicine, that these proven killers  have not been elimenated long ago. Google medical technological advancements and then ask yourself if this makes any sense.

That the Black plaque has killed al qaeda soldiers. It could be that they did that to see how quickly it would spread and how many died. Or it could be that more are infected and they are going to spread it to our soliders and then to us. There will be no stopping it, once it gets started over here.

Plague, the "Black Death" is in the Prairie Dog population of the American SouthWest and has been for as long as any one has been looking and it is still there. It was last year or year before last that the Plague killed 12 people in CA. So,if our society or transportation system ever breaks down, these old disease that almost every one thought was part of history are still waiting around to jump on us when they get a chance. Johnray1

True! The Bubonic Plague is also in the ground squirrel population in SE Oregon/North central California - and has been since at least the late 1970's.

My opinion on this article:No bio terror involved, just stupid Muslims living in caves in unsanitary rat infested conditions.

Some of the comments on this thread are perfect examples of panic.  I won't single them out as that is counter productive, but come on folks.....

Logic: people who live in caves are susceptible to scores of diseases, some much harder to treat than the plague. Anyone care to consider Hantavirus???  Or my all time favorite: Ebola.

I highly doubt that Al Queda, who brought down the twin towers, are STUPID enough to try to weaponize a microbe that is easily treated with anti biotics.  That is seriously stupid, folks.

My opinion, they didn't try to weaponize it and it got loose.

Neither did we drop it on them.  OUr government is not stupid enough, either (hard to believe, I know)  to invest their time or money in plague.

There are SO many other diseases/ bacteria/toxins out there just WAITING to be weaponized...... there's a veritable list of deadly vicious microbes .  Need examples:

EBOLA   the world's second deadliest virus, an ugly monster in the virus world ..highly contagious hemmoragic disease.

RABIES   the world's most deadliest virus....vaccine preventable if caught early, vaccine itself considered high risk, though.

BOTULISM  here's the big daddy of em all. The worlds most deadliest  toxin...

SMALLPOX a historically proven killer

HANTAVIRUS  gruesome and QUICK at killing

BACTERIAL MENINGITIS  mimics the flu, has a respectable kill rate but it's power lies in it's communicability....spreads easily.

SARIN  effective, worked in Japanese subway

RICIN  Get's my vote as most likely bio weapon: easy to make from castor beans, and an amount the size of a grain of salt is enough to kill a human.

With brutal killers like these, who in their right mind is going to mess around with the plague, which is easily cured with anti bios.

So, I'm betting on the Ricin, folks. It's the most logical....

Once again, from many sources, the "caves containing Al Queda" are mythical. One of the photo shoots of OBL surrounded by members were day workers hired for the picture and had some difficulty finding weapons to carry.

It might be noticed that in newer news stories they are crediting and using the Al Queda name less and less. The final CIA study on Iraq which has been posted, showed no sol.id link between AQ and Iraq before the invasion.

CIA finds no Zarqawi, Saddam link

A CIA report has found no conclusive evidence that former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein harboured Al Queda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, which the Bush administration asserted before the invasion of Iraq.

"There's no conclusive evidence the Saddam Hussein regime had harboured Zarqawi," a US official said yesterday about the CIA findings.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stressed that the report, which was a mix of new information and a look at some older information, did not make any final judgments or come to any definitive conclusions.

"To suggest the case is closed on this would not be correct," the official said in confirming an American ABC News story about the CIA report that the network said was delivered to the White House last week.

Democrats say the report weakens Mr Bush's case for war
There is no evidence of formal links between Iraqi ex-leader Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda leaders prior to the 2003 war, a US Senate report says.

The finding is contained in a 2005 CIA report released by the Senate's Intelligence Committee on Friday.

US President George W Bush has said that the presence of late al-Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in Iraq before the war was evidence of a link.

Opposition Democrats are accusing the White House of deliberate deception.

They say the revelation undermines the basis on which the US went to war in Iraq.

The BBC's Justin Webb in Washington says that the US president has again and again tried to connect the war, which most Americans think was a mistake, with the so-called war on terror, which has the support of the nation.

The report comes as Mr Bush makes a series of speeches on the "war on terror" to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the 11 September attacks.

_______________________________________

Requests rejected

The report is the second part of the committee's analysis of pre-war intelligence. The first dealt with CIA failings in its assessment of Iraq's weapons programme.

It would seem the myth has to be kept alive of power central organization. Some inside sources believe OBL has been dead for over two years, having been critically wounded in an attack. During a series of searches, the U.S. military were looking to find his body, but could not come up with much.

Subsequent Al Jazeera broadcasted tapes were often done by others and it has been said the real OBL had plastic surgery done long ago, and looks nothing at all, if still alive, like the photos and tapes circulated. In fact, it has been stated he could walk down a New York street in a suit with a briefcase, and look like any other businessman.

The 8 years of fear of terrorist attacks on the U.S. with no successful attack of any kind in almost 9 years would point to a very disjointed and disfunctional orginization when a single student at Virginia state could do more damage than the AQ has done in nine years.

The documentary on this myth, and the climate of fear used to generate trillions of dollars in spending to defend against an enemy which forever is in the shadows. Over the hundreds of cases credited to AQ, most were done by small separatist groups of Muslims, and there are hundreds of them.  The actual attack at 9/11 was neither done nor planned by the Al Queda, and the confessions of the most prominent Muslim showed him to be inconsistent and disjointed in his confessions and data.

Nevertheless, politicians and others will continue, every time there is 'terrorist' incident to attribute to a well organized group with cells and the evil mastermind OBL.

With the fall of the Soviet Union, and no true terrorist enemy which has conducted a single harmful strike in the continental United States, a fear based ideology must continue. We all must be under attack from something and money must be spent to defend us. In the meantime, issues of privacy, legal rights, and such were increasingly violated as millions were placed under surveillance without warrants and often without cause.

What was once the criminal database, expanded to DMV records, libary records and even habit of citizens such as what books they would check, on the net, keylogging infiltration programs planted on computers, and common services, such as are present in Vista and WeatherBug create portals used by the Akimata company to infiltrate private computers and send the data back which is sold to advertisers and used to monitor people.  You can easily find this contamination on your computer by running cmd and then netstat.exe . You will amazed at how many people are monitoring your computer right now without your knowledge and how virus cleaning utilities actually plant trojans and worms which monitor your surfing activity. The most serious is something nestled in system32 directory which is basically a mainline for those who wish to look and do and keep huge databases of your surifing activity, your private information, and detailed logs of the text content of your emails at key monitoring flow points. This was inserted years ago at main servers which mass monitor all web traffic. The supreme court ruling has been "there is no reasonable expectation of privacy on the net - and there is none."

All this, based on a training camp originally founded to train Muslims to spread their religion to other countries, and at least before the camp was totally wiped out by naval Tomahawk missiles, the U.S. was never a real target for attack. A single Harvard graduate, with a very small group of followers (300 or less) and a slightly larger group of sympathetic Muslims maybe at best in tens of thousands, as opposed to a Muslim population of 2.6 billion.

Case after case, of allegation of terrorists under torture admitting to more incidents and actions than they could have physically committed, from Muslims who as stated by the people torturing them 'love to talk' would indicate that under torture regimes that could not even be done in the U.S. continent because they would violate Geneva convention laws, like the Salem witch trials, they would say anything.

The justification of this was to get 'vital data' of a coming attack which then would be thwarted and save thousands of lives.

My personal days are numberd. My health is poor and so it might be said -truth is a luxury of the dying.

You may of course consider all of what has been said IMHO except for this BBC series which is rather intense and fairly well documented.

Something to take your mind off the Depression um extreme recession.

Irony - why is this on a Bird Flu site?

The threat of an impending Pandemic is far more real than a terrorist attack using nuclear weapons or chemicals. The use of a biowarfare virus which could easily spread across the U.S. would be the most effective and deadly attack leaving all structures, manufacturing faciilty, even military craft and resources untouched and subject to use by the enemy.

No area would be radiated, no enemy combatants would be required to spread the virus, and the effect would be as deadly, or could be as a sizable nuclear strike or even an EMP burst from a low flying satellite.

There are many military strategists in the world, and they are not all peasants and goat herders. The single target of OBL was to destroy the American economy. He stated that by creating a climate of fear with just a few people, the loss of power in the world by a devastated economy would be a great achievment than any direct attack on the U.S.

Some of the world's greatest scientists and researchers are not American. Massive nuclear technology has been directly sent from Pakistan to North Korea. Extensive bioweapon research has been done in North Korea.

Point: our greatest threat besides the wretched economy, is a Pandemic - caused by natural or unnatural sources. Given the current 63% fatality rate in verified cases by WHO and 83% in Indonesia - it would toast what is left of our economy and health care system.

Focusing on real threats and extremely possible scenarios is a far better idea. Prep. What will take out America is far more likely to be a virus than a bomb.

Medclinician

note: this is an exercise in objectivity. There is no agenda, no finger pointing, no purpose except to focus on what is important. It is inevitable there will be several waves of Pandemics. It is imperative you prepare for them if you wish a better chance of survival.
It is also a high priority the communities develop plans and groups to best use local resources when there be little if any federal, or state resources for use by the general population. Most of the resources will be used to preserve the infrastructure of 11 million as opposed to 300,000,000 civilians.

We will be on our own in a Pandemic. Better to accept this as a reality from the get-go, than be traumatized when it happens. The is a no fault situation. For the leader, the resources are not there to fight 1,000 Katrinas. The focus to protect America and preservethe government for what comes after the waves of Pandemics. This is like a no-fault divorce. Some things are just the way they are. We do not have the health system to handle a pandemic, we do not have the military or local law enforce capability to handle over a 5% (some say 3-4) CFR. We do not have an effect vaccine which can handle splintering Avian into many strains in China by the use of their Pandemic causing vaccine on their poultry which makes high poultry asympotmatic and carriers.

It is like president Obama against the leviathan of the failing economy. He didn't start the fire.

Whether they are or whether they aren't is a moot point.

The point is that plague happens right here in the USA from time to time, it is a natural occurance. Just last  year a Park Ranger who works with wildlife out west died from it. It was all over the news.  Again, the point: PLAGUE OCCURS NATURALLY ALL THE TIME.  As can Anthrax. THe park ranger died because he thought he only had flu and didn't seek medical help......anti bios are currently still very effective against plague.  If that changes, then we're in big trouble, but for now....it hasn't.

There is absoluely no proof or even circumstancial evidence to suggest that this  plague had anything at all to do with bio terror.

MY POINT PERSONALLY is that plague isn't the best choice for a bio terror weapon and that I'm sure anyone seeking to use bio terror would opt for something more lethal and easy to acquire or make, and to connect this outbreak with bio terror is a panic response that lacks logic.    .

Pandemic or bio terror? Eenie Meenie Minniee Moe..... Who knows where our next disaster will come from.   Discussing which direction is conjecture, not to mention a Pandemic could be started by bio terror... so the two directions are not even  clear cut.

Again, my point:  THis likely started from poor sanitation in a poor country where people have close contact with animals, whether in caves or not doesn't matter a bit.  Whether our next disaster is a bio attack or a Pandemic or a bio attack that STARTS a pandemic also doesn't matter.   What does matter is to keep a level head, and stop running from shadows.....because if you do, when/if a Pandemic or bio attack happens, you'll be too tired of running from the shadows you imagined to care, or think clearly.

And clear thinking is the best defense any of us have against ANY threat.

Very true. And very well presented in the video I put up concerning the need for us to stop operating in an environment of fear. Recently, or maybe in the last decade, agenda, or having an agenda, became a catch phrase.

There was a series I was watching last night called Jericho about after a nuclear whatever, and a top secret document said that no social change or anything significant could not happen without violence, fear, revolution, or war.

In the last 15 years old friends have come back to haunt us. Bubonic Plague is one of them. And we have new generations of people who do not have herd immunity against things like Polio and Smallpox which we had once wiped out.

Every outbreak is not a terrorist plot. In fact, we face the bogyman mentality. When was the last time we were attacked by biochemical or chemical warfare. They had an incident in London, and we have had a few of our own home grown terrorists (Unibomber) - or the bomb in Oklahoma City - but making people afraid makes them buy protection. And the government is protection. The government must have something out there scary so we will pour billions in to defend ourselves.

It does matter if there is an Al Queda. It does matter if OBL is alive or dead. It does matter if the horror beheading films were made by terrorists. And it would matter if a city were blown up, if we blew it up ourselves.

This has been done in the past, created attacks from nations and groups to establish a reason to strike back.

In your throat right now are Staph, Strept, and in your body are numerous pathogens which if your immune system shut down, as in an HIV patient, you would be a bacterial petri plate in a day, and dead within a month or so, if not less.

We don't need plague in the Al Queda. This reads like a National Enquirer headline. I have talked to NE several times and in the past had actual news or unusual things to publish.
They were not interested in real news. They make up stories that people like to read and in politics, the technique is to tell different stories to different people, like dating several women, to get support from everyone. Eventually, like the women, they find out.

The irony is we don't need the terrorists to do us in. If we don't get our act together soon economically, they can watch us take an economic nose dive on their high density cable without setting off a single bomb or firing a single bullet.

We have become, in many respects, become our own worst enemy, making horrific political decisions and allowing abysmal judgment calls in high places that are truly messing up our whole country.

Norovirus right now is sweeping all over the world. We have three active Pandemics - TB, Malaria, and Dengue Fever. MRSA and VRSA are crawling all over our hospitals, sometimes killing more people than the health problems they came in with.

Our milk is full of germs, pasteurization doesn't work anymore, and they radiate our food without labeling it radiated.  I was recently going to publish a paper saying that because of the double burn on yogurt, there are no living organisms in yogurt. Take a microscope and look at yogurt you might be very surprised.

Point - people make money out of scaring people. Someone probably thought it would be a cool idea to say plague was sweeping through the al Queda. So, is this to say in wisdom, we would release plague to fight the terrorists. Germs aren't too picky who they infect.

Training camps, some vast network of highly organized spies and cells ready to set off cities with suitcase nukes - There are lots of training camps all over the globe and covert planning that have nothing to do with AQ. They are radical Muslims who don't like America and gather resources and infiltrate us far more than blow us up.

The Pandemic is a reality that is coming. It is not if, but when. I would venture to guess our wait for something to blow up again may be awhile. Its been 9 years. The chances of a world wide Pandemic - there is something solid.

Running from shadows costs a lot of money, and we are running out of it.

Good post, Med.

Plague is a zoonotic disease and occurs naturally. Saying it's presence in an AQ camp is the result of bio terror is sensationalism pure and simple,  lacking evidence and logic.  This is one of the worst cases of bad journalism I've ever seen.   The only benefit from it is to the powers that be.... Scare the masses senseless and they are easy to control and victimize.

So how about it folks? let's stop jumping at shadows and think clearly and logically, so that when the time comes, AND IT WILL, that we need clear thinking and logic, we'll survive it.... whether "it" is a pandemic, nuclear attack, global economic crisis, or a personal medical or emotional crisis .... take your pick.

There was one virologist who developed a strain of hantavirus for bioweapons which was said to be the worst yet - or extremely deadly. He was interviewed by someone I spoke to personally and was killed less than 3 days later in a "gang attack in a parking garage."
I am the only person to have ever posted this on the net.

In the last 5 years, virologists and microbiology fatalities have far exceeded any normal rate. There was a list sent with names of people who died under questionable circumstances and their area of research. Life expectancy for bioweapons creators is very short.

The use of Anthrax as a bio weapon is ludicrous. The delivery requires a chopper, big tanks and a lot of Anthrax. It may have caused a stir in the legislature when it arrived in envelopes, but the real danger, even of weapons grade Anthrax is far less that hanta - which along with a modified Ebola - could do some serious damage.

Also, I have posted many times of the new prion design bio weapons. Prions are very nasty. We know little about them, except how to make weapons with them.

The entire concept of an Al Queda army should have been put aside with the last administration. I would have been more convinced if they said a warlord or Taliban group had perished. There a multitude of Warlord in Afghanistan than are causing us far more grief than any Al Queda ever will.

So let's get serious. You want to talk nasty bioweapons.. try this..

Scientists create species-jumping hybrid prions

September 11, 2008 · No Comments

Science A Go Go | Sep 9, 2008

In research with profound implications for public health, scientists have created entirely new strains of infectious prions in the laboratory by simply mixing infectious prions from one species with the normal prion proteins of another species. According to the scientists’ report in Cell, the new prions produced symptoms in laboratory animals that differ from any known prion strain found in nature.

Prion diseases, also known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), are infectious neurodegenerative diseases affecting the brain. Unlike conventional infectious microorganisms, the infectious agent in the case of prion diseases consists exclusively of a misfolded form of the prion protein. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is the most common prion disease in humans, along with scrapie in sheep and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, aka mad cow) in cattle.

In this new work, the researchers found that prion strains produced by combining normal hamster proteins with infectious mouse proteins can infect hamsters and vice versa. Although they are both rodents, prions from one of the two species normally don’t readily infect the other, a common phenomenon amongst prions known as a species barrier, the researchers explained.

“We are forcing the system by putting everything together, but this suggests that the variety of possible prions is really very large,” said Claudio Soto of the University of Texas Medical Branch. “We shouldn’t be surprised if new barriers are crossed and new prions arise. There is the potential for a large variety of new infectious prions — some of which may have dramatic effects.”

The same research team had previously reported the generation of infectious prions by amplification of prion misfolding in the test tube. In those experiments, they used a technology called protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA) that mimics some of the fundamental steps involved in the replication of infectious prions in living animals, but at an accelerated rate. The method involves placing small quantities of infectious prions with large quantities of the normal protein from the same species together, allowing the infectious form to imprint on the normal form and thereby replicate itself.

Now, they have shown that the same method can generate new strains when infectious prions from one species are mixed with normal prion proteins from another species. The finding provides strong evidence that the imprinting of disease-causing prions on normal forms can overcome species barriers, and doesn’t require any other infectious agent.

This new work has profound implications for public health, says Soto. “One of the scariest medical problems of the last decades has been the emergence of a new and fatal human prion disease - variant CJD - originated by cross-species transmission of BSE from cattle. Our findings suggest that the universe of possible prions is not restricted to those currently known but that likely many unique infectious foldings of the prion protein may be produced and that one of the sources for this is cross-species transmission.”

comment: this is the face of future bioweapon warfare. This will make anthrax look like baby laxative.

This is how it is done and understand - our enemies already know how to do this - are developing new ones- and have been doing so for years.

The media is WAY BEHIND the times.

This is how its done in the real world- and this is the real threat.

Speculation about a topic is not altogether a BAD thing. Though I agree it can get out of hand and lead to paranoia/conspiracy fixation, it can also be useful brainstorming method. That the media reported on the POSSIBILITY of plaque as a bioweapon in one AQ camp is an interesting tidbit - something to be considered - and discussed. This is a discussion board - right?

Sure, speculation is fine,  but my point is this: some people on this forum were not speculating, they were saying very off the wall things that bordered on hysteria...THAT is not productive.

Also in point is that the original article insinuated bio terror for what is a commonly occuring zoonotic disease. THAT is disreputable because the media has alot of power to influence the masses, and with that influence SHOULD SHOULD SHOLD come responsibility.  And the original article was a very irresponsible piece of journalism.

It was unlikely. One point here is that the old diseases which this generation do not have herd immunity or were vaccinated for are just as nasty as they ever were. Yet, they can be treated with antibiotics at times, but these days huge use of anything will make it useless quickly as virus and bacteria mutate.

To be brief here - during a Pandemic, all the old bad guys in the disease world which usually do third world reaper stints, will sweep the U.S.

They just need a nice warm comfy bunch of immuno-suppressed people to set up serious housekeeping and will spread quite efficiently.

The fact is, pneumonic plague is deadly. Most die within four days, anti biotics are not too effective because by the time a person gets to the Dr. the virus has already got too much of a strangle hold. I posted a scientific report to back that up and it is easily verified.
The question remains was it a natural exposure to the radical sect due to their dwelling in caves or did they try to weaponize it?
Brittish intelligence has discussed the possible weaponization of H5N1 so the idea of weaponizing virus is a known fact well established.
The reason why Anthrax and Ricin were not very effective is because they have to be aresolized and deposited by a plane and they do not spread that easily from person to person.
We have a small pox vaccine, and if we need to we can make more, we know what it takes to make a effective vaccine so that would not be too bright to use as a weapon.
Ebola kills too fast.
We have discussed this alal before on here. In order for something to be used as a weapon or for it to be a effective natural killer it has to have a long enough incubation period so that a healthy person infected with the virus can board a plane without symtoms and get into the population and spread it. If one becomes ill within three days of exposure if not dead as in the case of ebola, not going to spread far.
The best weapon is one with a high kill rate, that takes seven to ten days to do the killing. It allows time for the vector to arrive here and spread the germ.
It is what the military admits to being excremely concerned about, as it can pop up everywhere without a pattern if it is used as a weapon and get out of hand fast.
All of that is real.
Anyone who can watch the tapes of the beheadings, look at the WTC on 9/11 see the rail disaster in Spain the explosions in London and think that every nation and every people have only conspirted to make the radical Muslim look guilty when he is not, is the one who is insane.
Try looking at the Arab guy who just beheaded his lovely wife in Michigan. He bought a TV station to convince people that Muslims or Arabs were not as bad as we thought.
We live in a world now, where everything must be considered. That is what a survival web site is about.
I will again post a article that shocked me, I had no idea that plague was still so deadly and it should not be, dying of plague seems to be more important to me then going to the moon fifty times. Money should have been dedicated long ago, to insure that this did not happen again.
What do you think the odds would have been of two planes attacking the WTC on Sept 10th 2001?
How people respond to fear and crisis can save lives. You rule nothing out.
I do however totally agree that fear mongering is often self serving and serves no other purpose then to fatten someones pockets.
You may be suprised to find out that some people write books for profit and have web sites where they sell the very ideas we give away here. I take no ones words serious if they stand to profit from fear. No matter how big or small time they are.
Once again, whether it be due to  terrorism or just going camping and catching it, plague is something we all need to know about. As one poster said, a park ranger who should know better then anyone just died last year from this.

In my case, the book is first going to be downloaded here for free. I cannot make the March 1st deadline, because we have been struggling to keep our lab open.

There is a difference between fear mongering and providing a way to survive a Pandemic, terrorist attack (bio or nuke), and trust me, we aren't going to break the bank on PNSG. Besides the Medclinician Foundation is non-profit. And a little aside here, it is not the kind of non-profit Avian deal, that goes online and the first thing starts asking for donations. We are pulling our own loading and not asking for anyone for a cent. We don't have any little donate here buttons. There is no solicitation at all. Yes, after we give the book out free, we will probably want people to kick in on the download or buy it. But that money does not go to us. It goes to the Foundation. We live on life support. We are trying to save lives. This is not a 'you've turned my Father's house into a den of thieves thing' where it becomes a survivalist supermarket. Yes, people can buy stuff. But this is no Tommy - with T-shirts and ear plugs.

Our team has put the last 4 years into scientific research and and big chunk of that has been on Avian.

There are some really solid things here in your post. Why Anthrax is not a a good weapon. You should dig deaper into Prions. They are, in the inner circle, a nasty little bit of work that does not play by the rules. And they basically turn your brain into tapioca figuritively speaking on the surface.

Powerful stuff and all true. You must have some pretty solid sources.

And of course, the idea is not just to write a book and make money - after all - lets be real- we have a good chance money is not going to be worth as much as the books. They will be able to be traded after the Pandemic. They will have value when money may not.

We are getting resistance getting the book out. We are getting 'distracted'.

Anyway - good post. Solid.

Common sense is they are going to use what works best. Hanta modified is very bad. True, Ebola is too bad and people can't get out there to spread it. Recombine it, and turn down the heat on the fatality and ESPECIALLY incubation and you have a great weapon.  High high.. up to 100 CFR (actually don't need to tone that down -if we can extend the incubation time as well as the number of hours it lives outside the body.)

The vaccine was made from the virus. The virus has already been made. Try London Class 5 lab.

You do realize that the nuclear arsenal is getting outdate when we have bioweapons. It is a dinosaur meant to stop armies - not the kind that are too small to see.

Who we going to bomb? Really.. were will we aim the nukes.. and what a deterrent huh - after we have 50% of the people coughing and diied (Avian CFR is about 63%) What would be the point?

Dangerous times. We let people be scared a little because they need gradient. You can't hit them with this in the face. Riots, infrastructure collapse, commication zip, transportation zip, money system, history except for trade.

Who put the Anthrax in the envelopes. Did anyone ever find out? Does anyone ever wonder?

Weapons grade Anthrax. And where might that have come from?

And lets be real - who is the biggest culprit in scaring people? That is what has been happening for the last 8 years. Not by a single author.

People lay awake at sleep at night thinking of ways to frighten Americans. And it is not our enemies and it not the media or writers.

But not deadly enough. As long as anti bios still work on it, it is an illogical bioterror weapon. Now, WHEN that changes, then we're all in trouble.... Even without a mad Arab with a wish for 70 virigins letting it loose on us!  So far, anti bios are still effective, BUT there has been a wild strain in Madagascar detected which is resistant to anti bios.

In 1995, teams from the Institut Pasteur in Paris and in Madagascar for the first time isolated a strain of Y. pestis which was multiresistant to antibiotics in a Malagasy patient; then a second strain resistant to streptomycin in Malagasy patients with Bubonic plague. Scientists showed that these two strains had acquired resistance genes originating from other non-related bacteria. These first observations indicate that such an event can be reproduced in any plague focus in the world.

CONTINUING:

Hence the hypothesis, verified today by the researchers at the Institut Pasteur and the NIAID, according to which the acquisition of resistance genes would take place in the flea. To test this hypothesis, rat fleas were first fed on blood containing the bacterium E. coli carrying a streptomycin-resistance plasmid, and secondarily on blood containig a Y. pestis strain sensitive to this antibiotic.

The way in which Y. pestis develops in fleas facilitates the acquisition of foreign genes: bacteria multiply in the insect's midgut and aggregate in order to form dense micro-colonies. Researchers showed that close contact was produced in these clusters between the E. coli and the Y. pestis absorbed by the flea and that this prolonged contact led to frequent genetic exchanges.

After four weeks of co-infection, 95% of fleas housed in their midgut Y. pestis clones which had acquired the streptomycin-resistant plasmid. The researchers also demonstrated that the frequency of transfer of the resistance plasmid from E. coli to Y. pestis in the fleas' midgut was extremely high (10-3) and almost identical to that obtained in the laboratory under optimal conditions.

For the researchers, the fact that these genetic transfers are produced so easily and frequently in the experimental flea model suggests that this phenomenon is produced equally in the natural environment.

The emergence of Y. pestis strains that are resistant or multiresistant to antibiotics and the recent demonstration that the acquisition of this resistance can be produced outside of humans or mammals, in a setting which would be very difficult to control, reinforce the necessity of identifying new therapeutic targets and of developing an effective and well-tolerated vaccine against plague. The Institut Pasteur's actions are oriented in this direction

Now, for all who wanna be scared, be scared of THAT>   Oh, and by the way, the person who had the multi resistant strain DID RECOVER>

High level resistance to multiple antibiotics has been reported in a strain of Yersinia pestis isolated from a patient with bubonic plague from Madagascar.

Although the patient recovered, the case is of clinical and public health importance as the strain of Y pestis when examined in the laboratory was found to be resistant to all first line antibiotics as well as to the principal alternative drugs for treatment and prophylaxis of plague (New England Journal of Medicine 1997;337:677-80). Although there are naturally occurring strains of tetracycline resistant Y pestis, drug resistance has not been a recognised problem in treating plague or other vector born bacterial diseases until now.

Now, back to the "regular" plague"

Quote . Most die within four days, anti biotics are not too effective because by the time a person gets to the Dr. the virus has already got too much of a strangle hold.

That would only be true for the first few cases, which would think they only had the flu. Once the medical community were to find out what they were dealing with, there'd be no problem with stopping it with anti bios........for a time, anyhow.  And don't say oh, but where to get the anti bios, for now plain old penicilllin still works on plague and it is quick to produce and cheap as dirt.

from the CDC:

Q. What is the mortality rate of plague?
A.
About 14% (1 in 7) of all plague cases in the United States are fatal.

Q. How many cases of plague occur in the U.S.?
A.
Human plague in the United States has occurred as mostly scattered cases in rural areas (an average of 10 to 20 persons each year). Globally, the World Health Organization reports 1,000 to 3,000 cases of plague every year.

So, if treated, the kill rate is only 14%. So the most people to die would be very early in the terror attack, before anyone knew they were dealing with plague.  After that, the game is up.....well, until Yersinia Pestis (plague) becomes resistant. Then, it's OUR game that's up.

Here's a hint: the government is not stockpiling tons of anti bios...now why do you think that is?  Because they don't expect that any terrorist with half a brain is going to use something which still responds to anti bios, like plague.    Not unless you wanted to wipe out some poor third world country....and that is not their focus of attention. The terrorists are not obsessed with wiping out  Costa Rica, etc......they want us, and they know that plague is not going to be effective against a country with the means to combat it.

Back to my original beef:  this article:

Also: I reiterate. THIS ARTICLE IS BAD JOURNALISM.  It does not clarify that is is pure speculation or "what if". The headline is meant to grab one's attention, and the body of the article is meant to scare the bejesus out of the masses.   Luckily, I'm well versed in microbiology AND journalism, so this article didn't do a thing for me, but for others it is fuel for the fires of panic.  And I think the LAST thing we need is panic.  BAD BAD journalism. Whoever wrote this article should be ashamed, there wasn't a shred of logic or proof to be found.  Just pure sensationalism.  Then again, what would anyone expect from the press but more of the same BS.

Perhaps the author of that piece of worthless journalism should know:

From the CDC: .
Who is at risk for getting plague?
A.
Outbreaks in people occur in areas where housing and sanitation conditions are poor. These outbreaks can occur in rural communities or in cities. They are usually associated with infected rats and rat fleas that live in the home.

UH HUH....even here in  a modern place like the USA. HOw much MORE SO in a third world middle eastern poor country???? HMMM????

Quote The reason why Anthrax and Ricin were not very effective is because they have to be aresolized and deposited by a plane and they do not spread that easily from person to person.

Wouldn't need a plane to wipe out a subway full of people. Not global or national  but still effective.  A couple of nutcase martyrs stationed at strategic points  can do alot of damage both materially and emotionally. Didn't Mumbai teach you anything?  Terrorism doesn't need to be an entire nation......9/11 was just a NYC thing, but it shook us all, and kept our eyes to the sky.  Terrorism is quite effective with strategically placed and timed mini attacks......ask the Israelis.    So, in this way, Ricin WOULD be an effective agent.  Hopefully I won't, but perhaps some day I'll be on here saying "I told you so" and thumbing my nose at you.Clap

Quote We have a small pox vaccine, and if we need to we can make more, we know what it takes to make a effective vaccine so that would not be too bright to use as a weapon.

Not the BEST choice, but still a viable one. Sure we have a vaccine, but mass emergency innoculation is impossible to coordinate, and such a strain on the production. There is NO way we could a)innoculate everyone quick enough nor b)produce enough quickly enough to do so if we could

Quote Ebola kills too fast.

And gruesomely.  I don't think even the promise of 70 virgins in the afterlife would convince someon to mess with that nasty bug.

Quote I do however totally agree that fear mongering is often self serving and serves no other purpose then to fatten someones pockets.

So true. However, I disagree that fear has any positive purpose in this bio terror/nuke/pandemic end of days.  Fear in a catastrophe causes irrational thinking and can be emotionally crippling. It causes you to make rash and illogical decisions

what will save us in a pandemic/nuke/bio terror event is NOT fear, it is calm thinking and planning.  Fear serves no useful purpose to any of us on  this forum.  If a pandemic/terror attack were to hit, I promise you, the terrified will be useless to themselves or their families.

Remember our greatest presidential quote:

THE ONLY THING WE HAVE TO FEAR IS FEAR ITSELF.    FDR

So, in summation:  Plague is a naturally occuring zoonotic disease and the presence of it in any segment of humanity from time to time is natural, to be expected and more common than most people think.    There was NO proof or even circumstantial evidence to suspect that the appearance of it as stated in the unethical article is anything other than a natural event.  If it were otherwise, I would need proof of such
