WHO..... Pandemic Stage 5
...................................................

All countries should immediately activate their pandemic preparedness plans. Countries should remain on high alert for unusual outbreaks of influenza-like illness and severe pneumonia.

It is possible that the full clinical spectrum of this disease goes from mild illness to severe disease. We need to continue to monitor the evolution of the situation to get the specific information and data we need to answer this question.

From past experience, we also know that influenza may cause mild disease in affluent countries, but more severe disease, with higher mortality, in developing countries.

No matter what the situation is, the international community should treat this as a window of opportunity to ramp up preparedness and response.

Dead housemaid tests positive for bird flu

    Nation News - Thursday, January 29, 2009

Indra Harsaputra, THE JAKARTA POST, SURABAYA

A housemaid who died from a lung infection at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital in Surabaya over the weekend was infected with Avian flu, the hospital revealed Wednesday.

Chairman of the Press Forum at state-run hospital Urip Murtedjo said Sunday that a blood sample taken before the victim's death and sent to the Health Ministry had tested positive for Avian Flu.

The victim, identified only as S, and who is believed to have worked as a housemaid for a family in the city, was transferred from to the hosptical from a private hospital last Friday after suspicions were raised that she was suffering from the fatal disease.

"Initially, we did not know but remained suspicious of the patient's symptoms. After her death, the hospital's medical team sent a sample of her blood to the Health Ministry and the laboratory test result [confirmed] she was infected with the H5N1 virus," he told The Jakarta Post.

Urip said the hospital's medical team had doubted she was infected with the disease after learning the patient was not exposed to poultry at her work place or in her home village in Lumajang.

"This case has received a serious level of attention from the medical team because it is a new phenomenon," Urip said.

Chairul Anwar Nidom, a bird flu specialist at Airlangga University in Surabaya, said it would be foolish to rule out the possibility of an endemic in the city, citing recent outbreaks in Jakarta, West Java, North Sumatra and Banten.

He said his team would continue to research the path the virus was taking across the archipelago to determine which areas were vulnerable.

    On Leaks and Leaking...

    The Coming Obama-Press War
    It's inevitable.

...His administration may stay on message and never leak, but it won't be the only circus in town. Few Cabinet secretaries,
members of Congress, federal bureaucrats, federal grantees, soldiers and sailors, or others drawing a salary
from the U.S. Treasury get the love or respect from the president that they think they're owed. They'll leak because
it will be in their interest to leak, and the press will feast.

When they leak, he'll do what every president has done. He'll flip out.

Because of Obama's reach -- 13 million email addresses is a stunning number -- these sorts of tactics
(Daschle? Daschle who?) have the potential to quickly re-focus the American public on the economic stimulus
package rather than allow people to linger on the Daschle withdrawal and what it says about Treasury
Secretary Tim Geithner and the president's judgment more broadly.

All of that is not to say the media doesn't have a role to play. But, Obama has a unique

ability to end-run the media filter and use technology to make it stick.

Even before Tuesday's rebound, the stock market was sending signals

Upper-Income Taxpayers Look for Ways to Sidestep Obama Tax-Hike Plan

President Would Slap More Taxes on Those Who Make Over $250K to Fund Health Care

    By EMILY FRIEDMAN
    March 2, 2009

    excerpt-

President Barack Obama's tax proposal -which promises to increase taxes for those families with incomes of $250,000 or more -- has some Americans brainstorming ways to decrease their pay, even if it's just by a dollar

    article here

    Bill Writes...

The reporter doesn't seem to realize how the tax system works, and that people making over 250k only pay higher taxes on the dollars over 250k, not the whole amount. The idea that someone would purposely make 249,999 in order to pay less taxes that someone making 250,001 is quite breathtakingly stupid. But I guess rich people tend not to do their own taxes and therefore don't get some very very basic things? Nice job ABC!

Interesting reading Mary. Care to comment on why all our heaters in the lab (big ones) cannot keep up with the cold - we have space heaters on and at 9 pm last night with wind chill it was like -2 degrees here. Did we slip out of orbit and are headed for deep space and no one told us? Global warming? My dogs and cats are unhappy as they huddle near the heating vents - what is the deal with the cold wave that is supposed to go away. Its not snowing here (today) but it is like Alaska here temp wise.

How has the new Stimulus bill affected the tax credits for energy efficient home improvements?

On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed a stimulus bill (The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) that made some significant changes to the energy efficiency tax credits. The highlights are:

    • The tax credits that were previously effective for 2009, have been extended to 2010 as well.
    • The tax credit has been raised from 10% to 30%.
    • The tax credits that were for a specific dollar amount (ex $300 for a CAC), have been converted to 30% of the cost.
    • The maximum credit has been raised from $500 to $1500 for the two years (2009–2010). However, some improvements such as geothermal heat pumps, solar water heaters, and solar panels are not subject to the $1,500 maximum.
    • The $200 cap on windows has been removed.

The push to put a trackable radio chip in your Driver's license...

This post on citydata.com- N. Carolina

It was a sad day for me today as I called the local DMV. My cousin showed me her Renewed drivers licenses yesterday, and to my surprise there on the back was a new type of hologram. However as I came to find out today thru DMV sources it's not just a hologram it infact is a new trackable chip.

They said infact it was a new homeland security project for this state. The officer also said that the cards which are trackable is just the first step in the new project, she also stated that other states had their own projects but that eventually all states would in fact be merged into the same system.

This news shocked me to say the least but she also added that they were in fact doing facial recignitions as well to go into the database. However before answering my questions she had a couple of her own such as, why do you want to know?

Have you been involved with fake ID's ect. ect. I laughed and assured her that in fact I was just a concerned citizen, and that I found it irronic how we are not the terrorists but that we have to submit to being treated as such.

She however didn't seem amused. What as a nation have we allowed? Well as for me my drivers licenses doesn't expire until 2010, and until I move to a state that doesn't have such a policy or the policy itself is recinded I'll stick with the one I have!

A financial crisis is the worst time to change the foundations of American capitalism

It's hard not to see the continued sell-off on Wall Street and the growing fear on
Main Street as a product, at least in part, of the realization that our new president's
policies are designed to radically re-engineer the market-based U.S. economy, not
just mitigate the recession and financial crisis.

    Heads should roll

President Obama's clumsy, smirky staff is sinking him -- and resurrecting a deflated GOP! Plus: Lay off Rush! And a Brazilian diva, up close and electric

    By Camille Paglia

     excerpt-

President Obama should yank the reins and get his staff's noses out of slash-and-burn petty politics. His own dignity and prestige are on the line. If he wants a second term, he needs to project a calmer perspective about the eternal reality of vociferous opposition, which is built into our democratic system.

Right now, the White House is starting to look like Raphael's scathing portrait of a pampered, passive Pope Leo X and his materialistic cardinals -- one of the first examples of an artist sending a secret, sardonic message to posterity.

Recently on installations we went through certification training to install workstations which create these "ID" badges. They are part of a must large project called the Biometrics project originating in West Virginia.

    http://www.nationalbiometric.org/about_NBSP_profile.php

This is basically the tip of the iceberg of an information gathering technology which will be gathered on almost all Americans combining law enforcement, DMV records, and will be stored in towers designed and positioned in New York, which will hold one of the greatest knowledge personal databases in existence.

The justification of this highly invasive database was the necessity for information on terroirsts. This of course resulted in survellience without search warrant or court order, as well as massive communication monitoring of email and private computer information. The data was not scanned by individual, but harvest a key server points. Many servers and main lines resisted this and many individuals as per the ACLU

How to Talk to Your Kids About the Economic Crisis
    by Laura Rowley

In "Learned Optimism: How to Change Your Mind and Your Life," University of Pennsylvania psychologist Martin Seligman explains that optimists view setbacks in their lives as temporary rather than permanent; specific instead of universal; hopeful rather than hopeless; and external instead of internal.

For instance, imagine two families whose primary breadwinner loses his or her job. Here's the difference in the way they perceive their situation:

Optimists: "This rough patch will end and the bills will get paid; we'll tighten our belts for a little while." (temporary) Pessimists: "We're going broke!" (permanent)

Optimists: "We have the skills, experience, and contacts to find another job; meanwhile, we're healthy, the kids are working hard in school, and our extended family is supportive." (specific) Pessimists: "This is wrecking our lives." (universal)

Optimists: "Companies are cutting jobs across the board." (external) Pessimists: "They thought I wasn't good enough to keep." (internal)
