This is what we need more money for science to get us on top again.
If this will work we will be able to shake off our dependence on oil in 10 years
And never used again for power generation.

Electromagnetic waves can be injected and

steered to manipulate the paths of plasma particles and then to produce the large electrical

currents necessary to produce the magnetic fields to confine the plasma. These and other control

capabilities have flowed from advances in basic understanding of plasma science in such areas as

plasma turbulence, plasma macroscopic stability, and plasma wave propagation. Much of this

progress has been achieved with a particular emphasis on tokamaks.

Fusion: The Energy of Promise

Nuclear fusion offers the promises of an unlimited, clean source of energy. But achieving fusion has proved one of the most difficult and elusive goals of the physicist. NOVA tells the story of the twists and turns and the international competition along the road toward the achievement of fusion; and details the recent breakthroughs which seem at last to have brought it within reach.

Thank you Mary08 for the links we all know enormous benefits of this projects  and you would think that this kind of science would be granted unlimited resources to get this done in the shortest possible time. But no question is why not, We got to the moon in ten years, we created atomic bomb in like 5, why not this, I would spend trillions of dollars o this, Why because if you successful you can sell your electrical energy to the rest of the world that how plateful and cheap this would be.

It is interesting, (as I read more) but due to costs and kinks it is a decades away energy, according to many.

excerpt-

 * Hydrocarbons will continue to account for about 80 percent of energy demand through 2030; oil and gas alone will account for approximately 60 percent.

* Among renewable energy sources, wind, solar and biofuels grow rapidly at about 9 percent per year, reflecting government subsidies and mandates. These energy sources currently represent about 0.5 percent of world energy, and are expected to reach approximately 2 percent by 2030.

 * A wide variety of energy sources will be required to meet global demand, which is expected to be one-third higher by 2030 compared to today, reaching close to the daily equivalent of 325 million barrels of oil.

Research carried out at MIT’s Alcator C-Mod fusion reactor may have brought the promise
of fusion as a future
power source a bit closer to reality, though scientists caution that a
practical fusion
powerplant is still decades away.

Fusion, the reaction that produces the sun’s energy, is thought to have enormous potential
for future power generation because fusion plant operation produces no emissions, fuel
sources are
potentially abundant, and it produces relatively little (and short-lived) radioactive
waste. But it still faces great hurdles

Obama: More skeptical

Although Obama expresses more skepticism about nuclear power, he voted for the 2005 Energy Policy Act, which offered billions in subsidies to the nuclear industry -- as well as to corn-based ethanol. Both are important constituencies in his home state of Illinois, the second-biggest corn grower after Iowa, and the headquarters of Exelon Corp., the nation's largest owner of nuclear plants.

Obama introduced legislation in 2006 strengthening reporting requirements for radiation leaks, such as those emitted in late 2005 from Exelon's facilities south of Chicago, but the proposal was weakened and stalled in committee. Exelon executives and employees are among Obama's largest campaign contributors.

Nevertheless, it would take a lot of persuading for Obama to support future nuclear subsidies, said his energy adviser, Jason Grumet.

Although Obama believes subsidies and incentives are critical to overcoming barriers for less-established energy producers, such as ethanol, "once these new technologies have had the chance to succeed, the marketplace and not government should determine the role that they play in the economy," Grumet said. "It is irresponsible and, ultimately, insincere to commit the country to a certain number of facilities regardless of their cost or performance."

The Obama campaign supports storage of nuclear material on-site at existing reactor facilities, as has been done for decades. In the battleground state of Nevada, it has run TV ads chiding McCain for supporting the storage of nuclear waste in Nevada yet opposing its transport through his home state of Arizona.

McCain has dubbed Obama "Dr. No," for supporting new reactors but not Yucca storage.

Catullus

Please stop introducing this canard of nuclear power as the way for the US to solve its dependence upon
imported oil and gas. There is no good cost argument for nuclear fission fueled power generation;

fusion power is still an unimaginable time away, nor have we the faintest idea of its economics.
No one alive today will live to see an operational nuclear fusion power plant. Please don't be fooled
by the propaganda emanating from the nuclear power lobby, they are hungry for fat, government subsidised
contracts. You are being fed incomplete data in order to make nuclear power look less expensive than it is.

It is quite normal for these folks to leave out the very large de-commissioning costs, the cost of storage and
disposal for radio-active waste, at all levels of activity, and the cost of the tax-payer provided major accident
insurance. Were we to get complete and honest disclosure, everyone would be able to see that the real costs
are far higher than published accounts would have us believe. Despite years of argument, there is still no
method for the safe, legal disposal of the highly radioactive 'spent' fuel rods in the USA.

Not too surprisingly no-one wants that liability in their back-yard. Why do you think that the Federal Government
wants to store that stuff far away from the highly populated East Coast, in the Nevada desert, the answer is obvious.
Please don't tell me that there is no risk; if you have not heard of the Russian nuclear incident at Chelyabinsk then
look it up. A nuclear waste storage facility exploded and polluted the whole planet at a low level, one can only
imagine the havoc in the immediate area of the Soviet Union; it's been a forbidden zone for decades.

Remember
too that the half life of some of the isotopes in the waste is measured in centuries, not days. If you don't know what
a radio-active half-life is, look it up; you may frighten yourself when you see what we could have to deal with. So far
the US stock of spent fuel rods reposes in storage ponds at the various nuclear power stations, an ever present
and highly dangerous source of risk.

France decided to invest in nuclear power generation in order to avoid becoming dependent upon oil and gas,
for they have no domestic supply of either fuel. Despite all the hatred hurled at the French by the USA, the
French have done a much better job of long range planning for, and implementation of, their energy supplies and
transport network than the USA. The US needs to take a long, hard look at it's usage of petroleum fuels and plan
to cut consumption drastically, before the cost of imported oil and gas bankrupts us.

We pour huge amounts of
money into the least efficient mode of transport, aircraft; and virtually nothing into the second most efficient mode,
railways. A national high-speed rail network should have been installed decades ago, but the automobile, airline
and petroleum lobbies hated the idea and fought it to a standstill. With our corrupt and gutless Congress there
was no hope of overruling the lobbyists.
(The most fuel efficient method is water borne transport, but a national canal network is impractical in our very large country.)

Obama, Medvedev hail  'fresh start'  in  U.S. -  Russia relations
..........................................................................................................................................

By Steven Thomma, McClatchy Newspapers
Wed Apr 1, 12:17 pm ET

LONDON -  President Barack Obama will travel to Moscow in July, part of what he and his
Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev , are calling a "fresh start" in strained relations between the nuclear powers.

"Over the last several years the relationship between our two countries has been allowed to drift," Obama said
after meeting with Medvedev for the first time. "And what I believe we've begun today is a very constructive dialogue
that will allow us to work on issues of mutual interest."

CDC: Rocket fuel chemical found in baby formula

......................................................................................................

By MIKE STOBBE, AP Medical Writer

Fri Apr 3, 3:36 AM PDT

excerpt-

...However, the extent of the risk is hard to assess. The government requires that formula

contain iodine, which counteracts perchlorate's effects. The size of the infant and how much

formula they consume are other factors that can influence risk.

The study itself sheds little light on how dangerous the perchlorate in baby formula is.

"This wasn't a study of health effects," said Dr. Joshua Schier, one of the authors.

The largest amounts of the chemical were in formulas derived from cow's milk, the study said.

We all want Humpty Dumpty together again... but they admit it-

I will post a big plus for Obama. I spoke to one of his staff interfacing with the public, and I was very impressed at the feeling a new vision, a sincerely desire to be different in terms of reaching down to the people around the corporations.

I certainly agree with you on the morbid tone of the news these days. I think even I am going to lighten up with the Avian Bird Goth mode- and there is a need for some positive and upbeat stuff.

At time I think, these people must get pretty downed after post after post of death and spreading disease.

I went out in the sun today and though it was a little chilly actually took off my shirt at which point two birds almost crashed into a window blinded by the reflected glare of the West Virginia sun beaming off of my porcelain white chest. The most tan it usually gets is the 12 am refrigerator light as I debate over reheating my burrito supreme left over or nachos with a Mountain Dew chaser. Bluebird has her own special brew- mixing seven-up and orange juice. It is quite interesting. Skye loves all things Taco Bell. He even waves and says "Bye bye Taco Bell" as we leave.

We are in for rough waves and chop. Moving from cityopia into a place that looks like the Amityville house in size and design put all other forms of mental and physical torture to shame. Even if there is the mother of all Pandemics - I refuse to move again.

Well Mary, I can't say "you're on the air - and I plan to not that far away-when I can at least do some radio stuff and talk about this stuff live.

This has been a break from moroseness.  I'd share my burrito but the cat ate the rest. Weird cat.

Sleep well all and maybe take a break from the daily grind some of us spend surfing, posting, researching, and digging for news.. and reading.

I am thinking about Obama tonight, which I guess Bluebird would be non-plussed although she was a zealot at the polls and our poor sticked car.

After talking to one of his staff and getting ready to send something in - another topic for another place- I began to think - so he's trying to get the Iranians to talk peace.

And I realized, that just as surely as I hope there will never be a Pandemic, I also hope this guy is spared the cruel press, and - well we do need another hero and role model for these times. Let's give the guy a chance. Ignore the media, and just watch what he does.

Power to the People: 7 Ways to Fix the Grid, Now

Filthy coal-fired power plants spew carbon into the air. A mish-mash of 9,200 generators streams vital electrons along 300,000 miles of aging, inefficient transmission lines and one untrimmed tree in the wrong place could plunge a quarter of the country into darkness. This is our electric grid. A whopping 40 percent of all the energy used in the US - be it oil, gas, wind, or sola - is converted into electrons that travel over these wires. Any attempt at energy reform must begin here.

Gingrich slams Obama over Chavez
.......................................................

Carol E. Lee - Mon Apr 20, 10:23 am ET

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tore into President Barack Obama Monday for his friendly

greeting of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, saying Obama is bolstering the "enemies of America.”

Gingrich appeared on a number of morning talk shows comparing Obama to President Jimmy Carter

for the smiling, hearty handshake he offered Chavez, one of the harshest critics of the United

States, during the Summit of the Americas.

"Frankly, this does look a lot like Jimmy Carter. Carter tried weakness, and the world got tougher

and tougher, because the predators, the aggressors, the anti-Americans, the dictators - when they

sense weakness, they all start pushing ahead," Gingrich said on "Fox & Friends."

third such attack against a girls' school in Afghanistan

Girls targeted in 'Taliban gas attack'

Militants blamed after 90 pupils poisoned in third attack on girls' school in three weeks

By Jerome Starkey in Kabul

Wednesday, 13 May 2009

The pupils were lining up outside their classrooms for morning assembly when one girl suddenly collapsed unconscious. "She was only little," said Gulcheena, a 13-year-old student of the school who fell ill herself moments later.

They were among 90 Afghan school girls rushed to hospital yesterday unconscious and vomiting, possibly victims of a gas poisoning attack on their school in Mahmud Raqi village.

Kim Sengupta: Protect women: a new mission for America

Wednesday, 13 May 2009

There would not appear to be an obvious connection between the mass poisoning of schoolgirls and the new US military commander in Afghanistan. However, the appointment this week of Lieutenant-General Stanley McChrystal is supposed to signal that America is getting serious about a new policy of "protecting the people" – in other words, combating just such outrages.

Journalist Ahmed Rashid suggests that the devastation and hardship of the war against the Soviet Union and the civil war that followed was another factor influencing the ideology of the Taliban.[51] The young rank and file Taliban were Koranic students in Afghan refugee camps whose teachers were often "barely literate," and did not include scholars learned in the finer points of Islamic law and history.

The refugee students, brought up in a totally male society, not only had no education in mathematics, science, history or geography, but also had no traditional skills of farming, herding, or handicraft-making, nor even knowledge of their tribal and clan lineages.[51]

In such an environment, war meant employment, peace unemployment. Domination of women was an affirmation of manhood. For their leadership rigid fundamentalism was a matter not merely of principle, but of political survival. Taliban leaders "repeatedly told" Rashid "that if they gave women greater freedom or a chance to go to school, they would lose the support of their rank and file."[52]

(Pro-Wahhabi )Taliban, is Pashto, meaning "students"

In the 18th century the Wahhabi movement took hold

in Saudi Arabia.

Relations with Pakistan

For a period of seven years since their origin, Pakistan's government had been the Taliban's main sponsor. It provided military equipment, recruiting assistance, training and tactical advice that enabled the band of village mullahs and their adherents to take control of Afghanistan.[80]

Officially Pakistan denied it was supporting the Taliban,

but its support was substantial -- one year's aid (1997/1998) was an estimated US$30 million in wheat, diesel, petroleum and kerosene fuel, and other supplies.[81] The Taliban's influence in its neighbour Pakistan was deep. Its "unprecedented access" among Pakistan's lobbies and interest groups enabled it "to play off one lobby against another and extend their influence in Pakistan even further. At times they would defy" even the powerful ISI.[82]

Boston trolleys crash (May 9,2009)

Two trolleys collided in Boston, Massachusetts on the Green Line on Friday, causing the line to be shut down. About 50 people were hurt with minor cuts and bruises. One of the trolley's conductors was allegedly text messaging to his girlfriend at the time of the crash. The head of the city's transit authority has said he will ban bus drivers or conductors from carrying cell phones on board their vehicle.

"I want to remove any temptation by one or two people stupid enough to think a moment of convenience is worth the lives of the people they're transporting," said general manager Daniel Grabauskas. "I'm not going to wait for someone to die to institute a policy whose time I think has come."

U.S. health officials troubled by new flu pattern
..........................................................................

Mon May 18, 2009 4:12pm EDT

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The new influenza strain circulating around most of the United

States is putting a worrying number of young adults and children into the hospital and

hitting more schools than usual, U.S. health officials said on Monday.

The H1N1 swine flu virus killed a vice principal at a New York City school over the weekend

and has spread to 48 states. While it appears to be mild, it is affecting a disproportionate

number of children, teenagers and young adults.

This includes people needing hospitalization -- now up to 200, said Dr. Anne Schuchat of

the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"That's very unusual, to have so many people under 20 to require hospitalization, and

some of them in (intensive care units)," Schuchat told reporters in a telephone briefing.

"We are now experiencing levels of influenza-like illness that are higher than usual for this

time of year," Schuchat added. "We are also seeing outbreaks in schools, which is

extremely unusual for this time of year."

Blood Samples Raise Questions of Privacy

Some Samples Are Stored and Used For Research Without Parents' Consent

By Rob Stein
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Matthew Brzica and his wife hardly noticed when the hospital took a few drops of blood from each of their four newborn children for routine genetic testing. But then they discovered that the state had kept the dried blood samples ever since -- and was making them available to scientists for medical research.
"They're just taking DNA from young kids right out of the womb and putting it into a warehouse," said Brzica, of Victoria, Minn. "DNA is what makes us who we are.

It's just not right."

What is affordable to you and what is affordable to me? That is the question. If one can't afford it they are going to be fined? If they can't afford the insurance they can't afford the fine. If they are unemployed how do they buy insurance? How many people today are having trouble making ends meet? Lots and lots!

There oughtta be a law for her too.

Over 250 Massachusetts doctors have signed an open letter to the country warning that the health reform model enacted by Massachusetts is failing and that a single payer program is the only alternative.

An Open Letter to the Nation from Massachusetts Physicians: Early Outcomes from Massachusetts' Health Care Reform

We write to alert colleagues and the nation to the disturbing early outcomes of Massachusetts' widely-heralded approach to health care reform. Although we wish that the current reform could secure health insurance for all, its failings reinforce our conviction that only a single payer program can assure patients the care they need.

In 2006, our state enacted a law designed to extend health coverage to virtually all state residents. Political leaders in other states as well as several Democratic presidential candidates have embraced this model - Massachusetts' law mandates that uninsured individuals must purchase private insurance or pay a fine. The law established a new state agency to ensure that affordable plans were available; offered low income residents subsidies to help them buy coverage; and expanded Medicaid coverage for the very poor. (Immigrants are mostly excluded from these subsidized programs.) Moneys that previously funded free care for the uninsured were shifted to the new insurance program, along with revenues from new fines on employers who fail to offer health benefits to their workers. In addition, the federal government provided extra funds for the program's first two years.

Starting January 1, 2008 Massachusetts residents face fines if they cannot offer proof of insurance. Yet as of December 1, 2007 only 37% of the 657,000 uninsured had gained coverage under the new program. These individuals often feel well served by the reform in that they now have health insurance. However, 79% of these newly insured individuals are very poor people enrolled in Medicaid or similar free plans. Virtually all of them were previously eligible for completely free care funded by the state, but face co-payments under the new plan. In effect, public funds for care of the poor that previously flowed directly to hospitals and clinics now flow through insurers with their higher administrative costs.

Among the near poor uninsured (who are eligible for partial premium subsidies) only 16% had enrolled in the new coverage. And barely 7% of the uninsured individuals with incomes too high to qualify for subsidies had enrolled according to the official state figures. Few can afford premiums for even the skimpiest coverage; the lowest cost plan offered for a couple in their fifties costs $8,200 annually, and carries a $2,000 per person deductible.

Moreover, the state's cost for subsidies is running $147 million over the $472 million budgeted for fiscal year 2007. Meanwhile, collections from fines on employers who fail to provide coverage are 80% below the original projections. The funding gap will widen in future years as health care costs escalate and insurers raise premiums. Already, state officials speak of making up the shortfall by forcing patients to pay sharply higher co-pays and deductibles, and by slashing funds promised to safety net hospitals.

While patients, the state and safety net providers struggle, private insurers have prospered under the new law, and the costs of bureaucracy have risen. Blue Cross, the state's largest insurer, is reaping a surplus of more than $1 million each day, and awarded its chairman a $16.4 million retirement bonus even as he continues to draw a $3 million salary. All of the major insurers in our state continue to charge overhead costs five times higher than Medicare and eleven-fold higher than Canada's single payer system. Moreover, the new state agency that brokers private coverage adds its own surcharge of 4.5% to each policy it sells.

A single payer program could save Massachusetts more than $9 billion annually on health care bureaucracy, making universal coverage affordable. But because the 2006 law deepened our dependence on private insurance, it can only add coverage by adding costs. Though politically feasible, this approach is already proving fiscally unsustainable. The next economic downturn will push up the number of uninsured just as the tax revenues needed to fund subsidies fall.
The lesson from Massachusetts is that we still need real health care reform: single payer, non-profit national health insurance.
