Beijing - A 30-year-old Chinese man who recently returned from the United States tested positive for the influenza A H1N1 virus, the Ministry of Health said Monday. The patient, identified by his surname Bao, was the first confirmed case on mainland China of the new strain of flu that originated in North America and has sparked fears of a global pandemic.

The state-run Xinhua news agency said the patient was being treated at the Chengdu Infectious Disease Hospital, and that people having close contact with him were also isolated for medical observation.

More than 130 of the 150 passengers who were on the same flight to Chengdu in western China with the patient have been quarantined. The man travelled from St Paul, Minnesota via Tokyo to Beijing and then onwards to Chengdu.

Can't comment on everything but this is a real significant one. Heavy on the confirmed. Lots of possibles- in fact we had a whole building of them with protest- but but this will be one to track and really keep an eye on. I am sure China is not happy about this. Will see if I can find some follow stuff to post on your thread.

Well.  Now they know what it's like to be on the receiving end of things.

The big question is, "What will they mix it with before sending it back?".

Chinese mainland's first A/H1N1 flu case in 'stable condition'
Latest Updated at 2009-May-12 08:45:04

Chinese mainland's first confirmed A/H1N1 patient who was only identified by the family name Bao is in a stable condition, said a Chengdu Infectious Disease Hospital authority Monday.

Tian Ming, vice president of Chengdu Infectious Disease Hospital, said Bao's temperature had fallen back to normal.

Both Bao's father and his girlfriend, who had close contact with the patient, were isolated for medical observation at the same hospital. They didn't show abnormal symptoms, said Tian.

Bao, 30, who had been studying at an American university, arrived in Beijing on board the Northwest Airlines flight NW029 May 9, after making a transfer in Tokyo from St. Paul, Minnesota in the United States. His body temperature was normal when entering China. He then flew from Beijing to Chengdu on Sichuan Airlines flight 3U8882 the same day.

Bao was found to have a fever on the flight from Beijing to Chengdu accompanied by a sore throat, coughing, a stuffy nose and sneezing.

He went to the Sichuan People's Hospital after getting off the plane, and was tested "weakly positive" to A/H1N1 virus twice by the Sichuan Center for Disease Control and Prevention. He was then transferred to the Chengdu Infectious Disease Hospital.

Bao was the second confirmed case of A/H1N1 influenza in China. A 25-year-old male Mexican was confirmed on May 1 in Hong Kong to be infected with influenza A/H1N1, and those who were in close contact with him were put under quarantine in 19 mainland regions.

China reports suspected case of A/H1N1 flu in Sichuan
Latest Updated at 2009-May-11 09:13:13

One suspected case of A/H1N1 influenza was reported in southwest China's Sichuan Province, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Sunday.

The case, the first of its kind in the Chinese mainland so far, involved a 30-year-old man surnamed Bao. He had just returned to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, from St. Louis of the United States via Tokyo on Saturday afternoon. He studied at a U.S. University.

Epidemiology experts from Beijing have a meeting with local public health officials in Chengdu, Sichuan Province of China, on May 10, 2009. Bao had traveled on flight NW029 from Tokyo and arrived at the Beijing International Airport on Saturday. He then flew from Beijing to Chengdu on flight U8882 the same day, the ministry said.

According to the Sichuan health department that reported the case to the MOH Sunday afternoon, Bao was found with fever in the Sichuan People's Hospital and was "initially diagnosed as suspected A/H1N1 influenza case" based on his symptoms and laboratory tests.

Bao was transferred to the Chengdu Infectious Disease Hospital, the ministry said.

The MOH said Bao developed symptoms of fever on the flight from Beijing to Chengdu accompanied by sore throats, coughing, stuffy nose and sneezing. He went to the Sichuan People's Hospital after getting off the plane.

He was tested "weakly positive" to A/H1N1 virus twice by the Sichuan Center for Disease Control and Prevention, it said.

The MOH has sent expert team to Chengdu and asked the local health authorities to immediately send the virus specimen to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention for a second check.

The ministry has asked the Sichuan authorities to strengthen treatment of the patient, search all the people who had close contact with Bao and conduct relevant epidemiological investigation.

It has informed provinces and municipalities concerned to immediately look for the people who had close contact with Bao, and called for passengers of the two flights to contact health authorities as soon as possible.

According to the Sichuan Center for Disease Control, Bao's girlfriend and his father who were in close contact with Bao, have been put into quarantine.

Also in quarantine was a local taxi driver who was in close contact with Bao, according to Sichuan Provincial Department of Public Health.

The department also said there were altogether 150 passengers aboard the flight U8882 and more than 130 of them had been found.

The ministry has reported the case to the World Health Organization and relevant countries and regions.

In Beijing, a man with a fever after a shared flight with three people who were later diagnosed with A/H1N1 influenza, was cleared of the virus after being tested negative, the emergency office of the Beijing Municipal Government said Sunday.

The man, a native of Beijing, was aboard the U.S. airlines NW025, which flew from Canada to Japan via the United States on Friday. Three Japanese passengers aboard the plane were later tested positive for A/H1N1 influenza.

The man, whose name remained unknown, arrived Beijing Friday night, when his body temperature was normal. He developed fever on Saturday and was put under medical observation immediately.
