«Egyptian today» 2 in a row penetrate Abbasiyah admitted for isolated cases of infected swine flu

Tariq wrote the 6-8 / 2009

When it was originally an Egyptian American girl Mariam Essam Fawzi sex «12 years», which was the first recorded case of HIV infection in Egypt «H1N1» Swine flu is known, to leave the hospital diets بالعباسية, on Friday last, to recover fully after the deadly disease, the hospital old received a number of cases transferred from Cairo airport on suspicion of being infected with the epidemic,

The hospital also receives other cases suspected of being infected with influenza, especially the more vicious the virus «avian flu».

«Egyptian today» toured fevers Abbasiyah inside a hospital, the oldest and largest hospital in Egypt, the aim is to talk with Ms. «Hana» accompanied by her daughter, and to monitor the situation with the first exit after the recovery, identification of the work done in the hospital in the face of the epidemic, and new precautionary procedures, Achterguena ward (2), while the «Mary» inside section was completely isolated, and the external glass doors Alolomettal,

The internal doors of rooms, was completely closed, and the section is in a clean and quiet, but it is interesting that the nurses were not shown any interest in the wearing of masks within the Section, which is the same as the touch with most of the nurses and hospital workers in one of the most serious at all ..

Although the transfer of dozens of cases of suspected epidemic over the past few weeks, Mary was «veiled» and lying on a bed in a clean room air-conditioned 7, near the bed, her mother, who was looking forward to attend her brother, escorted them to the «Kafr Shebin», Center for Shibin Qanatir, which did not unable to travel to Cairo since Kaddomanma ..

The dawn of Monday, we talked with «Hana» Mary, the mother, but refused to talk with her daughter or photography, our willingness, despite the fact that tests have proven the safety of the mother, but did not cover their fears of the possibility of carrying the disease,

This is the same as stated by some doctors, especially as it was adjacent to her room for the duration of treatment.
Directly after the exit, she asked one of the hospital workers for not wearing Catcher, no less than: «Khaliha of God».

Abbasseya Fever Hospital Allocated for Isolated Cases Infected with Swine Flu

  By   Tarek Amin    8/ 6/ 2009

The American girl of Egyptian origin Mariam Essam Fawzi, 12, who was recorded as the first case infected with H1N1 known as swine flu, left the Abbasseya Fever Hospital on Friday after she has fully recovered.

The hospital continued to receive other cases transferred from Cairo Airport on suspicion of being infected with the epidemic, in addition to more cases on suspicion of avian flu.

Al-Masry Al-Youm toured the Abbasseya Hospital, the oldest and largest hospital in Egypt, and talked with Ms. Hana, who was accompanying her daughter, to monitor the hospital's efforts in the face of the epidemic.

We have penetrated Section II, where Mariam was isolated. The section was completely isolated. Its external doors were of glass and its internal doors that separate the rooms were closed. The section is clean and quiet, but the nurses were not wearing masks, despite the serious hazard.

The veiled Mariam was lying on a clean bed in the air-conditioned room no.7. On the other bed was her mother, who was waiting for her sister to come and take them to Kafr Shebin in Shebin Al-Qanatir, where they were originally headed when they came to Cairo.

On the dawn of Monday, we talked with Hana, Mariam's mother, who refused that we talk with her daughter or take pictures of her. We have abided to her orders.

The mother was still worried even though the reports said she did not carry the virus.

On our way out, we asked one of the hospital workers why she was not wearing a mask. "God protects me," she said.

2 US students reported with swine flu in Cairo

By OMAR SINAN – 4 hours ago

CAIRO (AP) — A foreign students' dormitory for the American University in Cairo has been put under quarantine for seven days Monday after two U.S. students were diagnosed with swine flu, health and university officials said.

The two cases were discovered Sunday night after the students exhibited flu-like symptoms and tested positive for the virus. They were hospitalized and given Tamiflu, said a Health Ministry statement.

"The building and the people inside it have been put under supervised quarantine, their temperatures are being been checked, and swabs have been taken from their throats and mouth and sent to laboratories," said Nasser el-Sayyed, an assistant health minister in the statement.

"Some others have exhibited high temperatures and sore throats," he added. The ministry said that there were 234 people in the dorm, including 110 students from 10 different countries and they would be checked daily over the coming week.

The 23-year-old students, a male from New Jersey and a female from Florida, arrived from the U.S. on May 28 for a summer program at the university, but didn't exhibit symptoms until Friday.

Every year hundreds of foreign students take classes at AUC, which has a 5,500 person student body, 81 percent of whom are Egyptian.

Police cordoned off the dorm building and sealed off part of the road leading to it, only allowing in dozens of pizza boxes.

The dormitory is located in Zamalek, an upper class neighborhood of Cairo, home to many foreigners and embassies.

The university itself recently relocated to the desert outskirts of the capital.

AUC issued a statement saying that classes will be suspended until Sunday while the graduation ceremony scheduled June 16 and 18 will be held as planned.

Egypt announced its first confirmed swine flu case June 2 after an Egyptian-American girl arriving in the country tested positive.

Travelers arriving in Egypt are photographed, their body temperature scanned and addresses taken down in case further follow up is necessary.

Egypt's government has come under criticism for its decision to slaughter the nation's 300,000 pigs in response to the swine flu problem.

The move has elicited widespread criticism from international animal rights groups and was described as unnecessary by the World Health Organization.

Egypt quarantines 234 in university dorm over H1N1

Published Date: June 09, 2009

CAIRO: Egypt has detected the H1N1 flu virus in two students at the American University in Cairo and has put 234 students and staff under quarantine in a Nile island dormitory, health and university officials said yesterday. Police wearing face masks stood guard at barriers outside the multi-storey dormitory building in the upmarket neighbourhood of Zamalek that houses mostly foreign students and faculty. No one was allowed in or out. "There are two students who have confirmed positive H1N1 test results,
university spokeswoman Rehab Saad El-Domiati said, adding that both infected students were American. "As a result, the dormitory has been quarantined for 24 hours.

A third student with a fever was hospitalized as a precaution. The university, a popular destination for U.S. exchange students, suspended classes for the week, and all dormitory residents were being tested for the virus. Egypt, already hard hit by the much more deadly H5N1 bird flu virus, detected its first H1N1 case last week in a 12-year-old American girl who arrived for a holiday in the most populous Arab country. The case was the first in Africa.

The airborne H1N1 virus has now been diagnosed in more than 21,000 people worldwide, and has killed at least 125, mostly in Mexico, according to the World Health Organization. Egypt, whose poultry industry was decimated by the arrival of bird flu in early 2006, fears another flu virus could spread quickly in a country where most of the roughly 76 million people live in the densely packed Nile Valley, many in crowded slums.

Egypt had stepped up surveillance measures at the airport to try to prevent the arrival of the disease, including by installing thermal monitors that helped detect and swiftly isolate the country's first H1N1 case. But the American University students who tested positive for the virus were believed to have arrived in late May on two separate flights from the United States, casting doubt on whether Egypt's airport measures could detect all cases. Egypt has reported 29 human cases of bird flu this year inclu
ding a toddler who tested positive on Sunday-nearly four times the number reported in 2008. - Reuters

I just saw this about Egypt, when I was reading news on the web. This is terrifying, and definitely worth watching.
There is nothing to fear except the persistent refusal to find out the truth, the persistent refusal to analyze the causes of happenings. ~ Dorothy Thompson

Five more cases of swine flu in Cairo dorm

CAIRO (AFP) — Five new cases of swine flu infection were discovered at a Cairo campus dormitory on Tuesday, Egypt's health minister Hatem al-Gabali told the state-news agency MENA.

The American University of Cairo (AUC) campus residence in the upscale neighbourhood of Zamalek was quarantined on Monday after two American students were found to be infected with the A(H1N1) virus.

Health workers took samples from the dormitory's 140 residents following the outbreak and the university announced it would suspend classes until Sunday June 14.

But the health ministry has now decided to quarantine the residence for another week, Gabali told MENA on Tuesday.

While the two infected students on Monday were both American, Gabali did not give the nationalities of the five new cases.

An AUC official told AFP the university had received a call from the ministry informing them of the new cases, but that they had no further details.

The latest cases bring the number of swine flu infections to eight in Egypt, where the government undertook a controversial cull of the country's estimated 250,000 pigs after reports of outbreaks in other countries.

The authorities have stepped up checks of travellers at airports, quarantining suspected cases in makeshift centres.

Egypt is already battling the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu, which has killed 27 people since it was first reported in 2006.

Swine flu has now spread to 73 countries with 25,288 people known to have been infected and 139 to have died since the disease was uncovered in April, the WHO said on Monday.

Two more cases of A/H1N1 flu confirmed in Egypt

www.chinaview.cn 2009-06-10 19:40:02

CAIRO, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Two more A/H1N1 cases were confirmed in Egypt bringing the total number of infections in the populous country to 10 cases, spokesman of Minster of health Abdel Rahman Shahine said in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the two cases are an Egyptian and an American, who returned recently from the United States. The first case is an American engineer, who began to develop symptoms on June 9 after arriving on June 7.

The second case is an Egyptian citizen, who arrived in Alexandria on June 4 and began to develop symptoms on June 8.

Both were hospitalized and in stable condition.

Egypt reported seven A/H1N1 flu cases at a dorm of the American University in Cairo (AUC), the health ministry said Monday it will quarantine the dorm for seven days, which accommodates 110 students and 124 teachers.

On June 2, Egypt reported its first A/H1N1 influenza case, which was a 12-year-old Egyptian-American girl coming from the United States via the Netherlands.

Egypt, the most populous Arab country that was hit hard by the fatal bird flu in 2006, decided in late April to cull all the pigs in the country to stem the highly infectious flu.

Worldwide, about 27,000 people in 73 countries have been confirmed to be infected with the A/H1N1 flu virus, the latest WHO tally showed on Monday.

Letting patients with H1N1 and H5N1 within a mile of each other is inviting one of the worst recombination possibilities one could think of. Taking a disease with a 63% CFR and giving it the contagion and spread capability of H1N1 is a sure fire road to The Stand.  This is a worst case scenario. The Avian patient should be immediately taken to another facility.

How verified is this story? Why would any medical facility do this?

Checking on this one. Definitely need a link - if one can be provided to a CREDIBLE site.

Checking on this one. Definitely need a link - if one can be provided to a CREDIBLE site.

I heard that Vietnam has been giving an h5n1 vaccine trial to people at the same time that the swine flu is raging.  If the vaccine was "live" or not a good lot then that could also cause the swine to mutate to more lethal form....it seems like one way or another this is not going to get better, only worse.

The sudden spike in bird flu related cases at a time when H1N1 is spreading in that region is alarming to say the least.

Is it a coincidence or are there other fsctors at hand?

Swine Flu Panic in Egypt

By  Amr Emam, IOL Correspondent

CAIRO – The detection of seven swine flu infections among the students of the American University in Cairo (AUC) is sending panic waves across this populous Arab country.

"People run away once they know that I lecture there," said Sarah el-Nagar, a lecturer at AUC, told IslamOnline.net.

"People are very worried."

Seven AUC students have tested positive to the H1N1 virus, widely known as swine flu, over the past few days.

  • )
The students, who have arrived from the US a week ago, live at a dormitory in the luxury residential area of Zamalik, southwest of the capital Cairo.

Health officials have quarantined all 240 residents in the multi-storey dorm, preventing ordinary people and journalists from coming near it.

Outside the dorm, white-clad policemen stood meters away from the building and put masks on their mouths and noses, reflecting the state of high alert and fear engulfing the whole place.

Life on el-Mer’ashly Street, which houses the building, has come to an almost standstill.

Nobody dared to come near the street, which the government had barricaded and isolate from this luxury residential area.

Mustafa Abdel Satar, a 27-year-old delivery man for a major restaurant chain, no longer takes orders to el-Mer’ashly Street.

"There’s no kidding with this disease," Abdel Satar told IOL.

"You never know how exactly you can contract the virus. You can get it by just pressing the doorbell of the apartment of infected people."

Some of his colleagues are even turning down orders in other places in Zamalik out of fear.

The virus has now been diagnosed in more than 21,000 people around the world, and has caused the death of at least 125 people, mostly in Mexico, according to the World Health Organization.

Limitless fright

Many panicking Egyptians are buying masks to avoid infections. (Reuters)
Ismail Haggag, an AUC accounting student, says many of his colleagues have hurried up to special labs to ensure that they had not contracted the virus.

"A colleague of mine had gone to a lab to do some tests once his temperature rose," he told IOL.

"He proved negative to the virus, but this might show how people are very worried."

The AUC administration has sent mails to its students and staff telling them that classes have been suspended until June 15.

Egyptian health officials announced Wednesday that two people tested positive to the virus bringing the total number of confirmed infections to ten so far.

"The new cases are from Cairo and Alexandria," said Dr. Abdel Rahman Shaheen, the Ministry of Health official spokesman.

Egypt detected its first swine flu case days ago in a 12-year-old Egyptian-American girl who had arrived for a holiday with some family members.

The authorities had stepped up surveillance measures at airports, ports and terminals to prevent the arrival of the disease using thermal monitors that detect people with high fever, an early symptom.

Shortly after the discovery of the first case in Mexico, Egypt decided to cull more than 300,000 pigs as a preventive measure against the virus.

Observers say swine flu makes Egypt face what amounts to a Hobson’s choice.

With a population of 80 million that is concentrated on less than 7 percent of the land, Egypt is a hugely dense country where the spread of infection is so easy.

With 29 bird flu patients, Egypt is the world’s worst hit country outside the Asian content.

Egyptian hospitals continue to receive people who have contracted the deadly avian flu virus every day.

Toddler latest swine flu case in Egypt

CAIRO (AFP) — An 18-month-old boy tested positive for swine flu in Egypt on Thursday, the state news agency MENA reported, as the World Health Organisation told diplomats it was officially declaring a pandemic.

The dual US and Egyptian citizen arrived in Cairo from the United States with his family earlier this week, a health official told MENA.

Diplomats in Geneva said WHO chief Margaret Chan has informed member states that it has decided to declare a swine flu pandemic by raising its alert to the maximum level six.

Chan "confirmed that we would move to phase six," said an American diplomat at the end of a meeting with ambassadors.

In Cairo the toddler was in stable condition in hospital and his family was being tested for the A(H1N1) virus.

He was the second case reported in Egypt on Thursday after a 34-year-old Colombian in Cairo was found to be infected with the disease a day after her husband, who was recently in the United States, tested positive.

The child was the 12th case after a 12-year-old girl travelling from America became the first reported case in Egypt and on the African continent on June 2.

On Tuesday, the health ministry said it would extend a quarantine on an American University of Cairo residence in the upscale neighbourhood of Zamalek after five American residents were found to have been infected with the virus.

Two students in the dormitory had tested positive for the virus the day before.

By Wednesday a total of 74 countries were affected by the A(H1N1) virus, with 27,737 infections and 141 deaths reported to the international health agency.

The authorities in Egypt began a controversial cull of the country's estimated 250,000 pigs, mostly reared by poor Christian farmers, after outbreaks of the disease in other countries.

Egypt is already battling the H5N1 strain of bird flu, which has killed 27 people since it was first reported in 2006.

The authorities have stepped up checks of travellers at airports, quarantining suspected cases in makeshift centres.
