I hear a lot of good information about this supplement, but is it just hype? Has anyone here seen any real benefit from taking it, and if so how much do you take and for what purpose? And, any noticeable side-effects?
Thanks in advance for any info. MrMouse |

What's with CoQ10?
I recently read an article that indicated that CoQ10 is no longer considered safe. What is your current position on CoQ10?
A Answer (Published 8/24/2006)
Coenzyme Q10, more widely known as CoQ10, is a natural antioxidant made by the body and found in most foods. Among its other effects, it improves use of oxygen at the cellular level, particularly in heart muscle cells. I recommend coenzyme Q10 to anyone concerned about heart health, and I take 120 mg daily myself.
CoQ10 helps protect LDL ("bad") cholesterol from oxidation, maintains healthy blood vessels,
reduces the risk of plaque rupture and
supports optimal functioning of the heart muscle.
There is also some evidence that CoQ10 can help lower blood pressure. Anyone taking statins to lower cholesterol should take 60 to 90 mg daily because the drugs
suppress production of CoQ10 as well as cholesterol. (Low CoQ10 levels in patients on statins can contribute to the common side effects of fatigue and aching joints and muscles.)

Supplementation
Because of its ability to transfer electrons and therefore act as an antioxidant, Coenzyme Q is used as a dietary supplement. According to the Mayo Clinic[9] "CoQ10 has been used, recommended, or studied for numerous conditions,
but remains controversial as a treatment in many areas." Further clinical results are
needed to determine whether the supplementation with Coenzyme Q10 is beneficial for
healthy people. cue-ten" –, CoQ, Q10, or simply Q

This oil-soluble vitamin-like substance is present in most eukaryotic cells, primarily
in the mitochondria. It is a component of the electron transport chain and participates
in aerobic cellular respiration, generating energy in the form of ATP....a

that is, the "molecular unit of currency" of intracellular energy transfer.[1]
Biochemical role
Biochemical role of many organelles. Since its primary function in cells is in generating energy, the highest
concentration is found on the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. Some other
organelles that contain CoQ10 include endoplasmic reticulum, peroxisomes, lysosomes,
and vesicles. wikipedia

I've been taking CoQ10 150mg to 300mg every day for many years. My Cholesterol is 158 and my Cardiac calcium scoring on a CT scan is zero.
Does CoQ10 actually work or do anything helpful at all? I have no idea. I'm I wasting money? I have no idea :) |

Tech - what are your views on workout supplements like NO-Xplode (An NO / Caffiene stack for preworkout) and Green Wraath, Cellmass, etc.
Also, what do you think of thermogenics? I ask this because I saw you train for MMA so I figure you have experience with this stuff. |

This is just my opinion so don't take it as medical advice. I have boxes of samples in my closet as those companies keep sending them to me. Gains from creatine are through osmosis. The microfibers of your muscles get hydrated as the result. You might gain 2-10 pounds (this is temporary) and most of it is water. Vegetarians in general tend to get little creatine and do have less lean body mass as a result. I think steak has about 2 grams of creatine per pound. Vegetarians get the biggest gains from creatine. You will gain a little bit of strength but don't forget the side effects. Before you even start taking creatine you should have a Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) test and a Creatinine serum test to see if your kidneys are already stressed. I say this because once you start creatine your tests will shift and you'll get false readings. Supplemental Creatine Monohydrate or any of the numerous creatine supplements can make your kidneys really inefficient as they lose their glycolytic capacity from creatine suppression. You don't want to hinder your Kidneys or the production of ATP, which is essential, and creatine might hamper this in some people. Some people also get portal hypertension and reduced liver function. I'm not saying creatine is really that bad but you need to know that some risks are present. As for taking products to increase Thermogenesis, again you're taking risks. While you may cut fat and increase energy you'll also be suppressing your own production of TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone, T3 and T4. When you stop you'll have some pituitary resistance and Impaired thermogenesis, hypothyroidism. This will take time to correct and you'll be drained and gain fat back quickly. I would just stick with increasing your exercise duration and intensity instead. No-Xplode along with anything with Nitric Oxide supplements are a little risky. Sort of like the 100's of deaths associated with taking Viagra. Green Wraath,? I think you mean Green Magnitude & Purple Wraath. I would go with scivation Xtend instead as it has all the branched chain amino acids to increase your endurance and recovery some and only about 1 gram of creatine. Again is just my opinion and I'm not a doctor. |
