Doctors at Sassoon hospital anxiously await report on 35 patients who died of infection that caused symptoms similar to swine flu

Doctors at Sassoon Hospital, who are in the thick of the swine flu battle, are a worried lot. Thirty-five patients with swine flu-like symptoms died in the last 45 days at the hospital, and not one of them tested positive for swine flu. The doctors still don’t know what caused the death of these patients.

comment: Is this more cases of the "new bug' that is in the Ukraine. And is this 35 patients at one hospital that died?

This is interesting as well

Sassoon Hospital, which has been dubbed as the epicentre of the swine flu activity in the state.

Should a severe mystery flu surface, I hope they're checking for H5N1.   Not sure why h5n1 testing has stopped altogether.

This hospital is in Pune in India and is the main site of flu activity in a least Pune. A lot of people are dying from viral pnuemonia and they may not even be testing for swine flu in those cases.

This is your problem. You get people dying 'with flu like symptoms' and the word is out- its all Swine Flu- therefore- the tally - 3 more swine flu deaths. In this case they did not confirm the diagnosis at all.

I realize prisonplanet- is not everyone's favorite source of information- but in this case- it appears we have quite a few more. And what better place to monitor Swine Flu or the other disease than in this hospital?

For Pune that has recorded the highest number of H1N1 deaths in the country.

Lets come to present time- today and what is happening there

comment: how about 100 deaths from Swine Flu in this hospital? Here is a totally reliable link. Now, if we have something going awry in Russia- isn't it likely we are going to see it perhaps in the hotspot of India for Swine Flu- even if it isn't Swine Flu. So we are trying to document 35 respiratory deaths which according to one source (looking for more) amidst 100 that were.

Pune, Nov 7 (PTI) A sneeze raises eyebrows and coughing makes people nervous in the city, which has emerged as the epicentre of swine flu with 100 casualties.

A lurking fear pervading the city for the last three months after the death of 14-year-old school girl Reeda Shaikh on August 3 - India's first H1N1 fatality - has hit social life in Pune, with its population of 35 lakh.

When 28-year-old Mohini Undre was declared the 100th victim of H1N1 in Pune on Thursday, turning the toll three digit, fresh concerns came haunting the health officials and common people alike over the possibility of a more virulent "second wave" with the onset of winter.

comment: well there it is - the focus of the thread. Is it fluish- or is it the new improved H1N1. If it is the new and improved H1N1 in India- we have a problem. For one we have a vaccine in America problem. This virus is not supposed to mutate. Though it was labeled when it recombined in 1998 and then in 2005 to be one of the worst mutators and would be- we have the constant statement over and over it has not mutated.

Can we then not, have concerns of a more virulent second wave which is about to hit us this winter?

Dr Arun Jamkar, Dean of Government-run Sassoon Hospital, which has seen maximum swine flu deaths, says "a second wave is totally unpredictable. We have to be completely prepared to meet any eventuality that the virus can bring to us.

comment: I think we can. And also I think that aside from the regular spin on the media- we start lookng around China, Hong Kong, and wherever else for mutation or another disease.

Perhaps we need to look at how many people who had this one- which apparently is a better killer than the one that left the U.S. died from it percentage wise.

Could be.

Meanwhile, at least four patients were in serious condition at the hospital, Pune District

"We requested the National Institute of Virology (NIV) to check tissue samples from these patients for eight to 10combinations of the HN virus subtype like H1N2 or H2N2. It is extremely important that the virus is identified so we can decide on the course of treatment," said Dr Arun Jamkar, dean of Sassoon Hospital, which has been dubbed as the epicentre of the swine flu activity in the state.

On October 28, doctors at Sassoon shared the data on these deaths with the Center for Disease Control, Atlanta, USA, and virologists across the world in a videoconference.

Despite repeated attempts, Dr A C Mishra, director of NIV, remained unavailable for comment. Dr Mandeep Chaddha, deputy director, NIV, said she wasn't authorised to speak to the media.
