It looks like this one is going to show some serious damage and deaths.

I'm sort of busy today. Anyone want to lookup if the worldwide seismic activity is getting any stronger then normal? I realize that you have a tendency to find what you look for and Earthquakes are no exception. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a Graph that adds up the totals worldwide Earthquakes events and magnitude over time and graphs them out like Google Flutrends or like the stock market history. Here's one but it's not very good LINK Plus how do we know that the increase over the years is not just due to the increased amount of seismic sensors over the last 4 decades?

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti The largest earthquake ever recorded in the area shook Haiti on Tuesday, collapsing a hospital where people screamed for help. Other buildings also were damaged and scientists said they expected "substantial damage and casualties."
With communications disrupted there were no reports of deaths or injuries soon after the quake, as powerful aftershocks shook the country.
The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and was centered about 10 miles (15 kilometers) west of the capital of Port-au-Prince, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It had a depth of 5 miles (8 kilometers). It was the largest quake recorded in the area, said USGS analyst Dale Grant, and the last major one since a magnitude-6.7 temblor in 1984.

This one looks like it's going to turn out nasty. It will take hours or even days to get the full extent of the damage.

"It is a pretty significant earthquake," said Julie Dutton. "Given the size and location, we are anticipating some significant damage from the region."

According to wire service reports, witnesses say a hospital in the capital collapsed and that many buildings were damaged. Additional information from the island has been slow in coming, as telephone service from abroad has been disrupted.

Geophysicist Julie Dutton says she expects the damage to be severe, partly because the region is not accustomed to major quakes.

"This is actually the largest earthquake we have seen in the last 200 years in this region,"

I've been trying some webcams around Port-au-Prince and they are all down.

There are fears of a major loss of life following the quake, which measured 7.3 on the Richter scale, and two powerful aftershocks which followed.

Earthquake: the first evidence suggest hundreds dead in Haiti

The violent earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday has caused hundreds of deaths, reported from many witnesses in the first hours after the disaster.

"The dead are counted by hundreds when it is possible to take stock," he told AFP a doctor, himself wounded in the left arm covered with blood.

American diplomats on the spot "saw many bodies in the streets and sidewalks, which were hit by debris," said Philip Crowley, the spokesman for the State Department: "Obviously, it there are many deaths. "

"The center of Port-au-Prince is destroyed is a real disaster," he told AFP a resident who walked several miles to return home amid scenes of panic.

An aid worker present in Port-au-Prince has described a situation of "chaos" and said fear "thousands of dead," reported the AFP an official with the American NGO Catholic Relief Services.

"It was chaos, there was a lot of dust accumulating in the city, houses were collapsed. It believes that thousands of people could have been killed," said Lane Hartill.

"It was the worst earthquake that has ever felt," he added.

The communication was cut, said Hartill, after the witness felt tremors in the house where he was, and the NGOs could not be reached since.

. The head of the mission of the UN Stabilization in Haiti (MINUSTAH) has been destroyed "largely" by the powerful earthquake that struck near the capital Tuesday, told AFP an employee of the organization .

The United States is currently mobilizing their emergency relief, has also said Crowley.

The strong earthquake of magnitude 7 has violently shaken the Haitian capital, with over 2 million inhabitants.

I would reason to say that the "500,000 dead" number below is hyped up but we are going to see a very large amount of deaths. I'm guessing that those numbers are hyped up to get more aid in quickly. This is a smart move to save lives. Many deaths could be avoided by quickly rescuing the buried and supplying food water, shelter and medical attention to the effected.

Compare the 1906 San Francisco 7.7-8.25 Quake that took down 28,000 Buildings and created 225,000 homeless out of a 400,000 population. That quake has death estimates of:

498 deaths in San Francisco
64 deaths in Santa Rosa
102 deaths in and near San Jose

Later on the Deaths might have climbed to more than 3,000 as people had very little in aid.

San_Francisco_earthquake Wiki

Looking at numerous pictures and the structures, building materials, composition and height of the buildings.
I'm also accounting for the time of day and how many people might be indoors when it happened.
I don't see the damage any greater then the San Francisco quake other then the almost ten fold increase in effected population.

Based on this I can't fantom how they are pulling figures like 100,000+ to 500,000 dead but I'm not sitting in the epicenter.
A ten fold death toll over the San Francisco quake would be more reasonable based on the effected population.
I'm just guessing with all the information I have at hand so don't take my thoughts as an accurate prediction.

Officials fear more than 100K dead in quake

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/cb_haiti_earthquake

His prime minister, Jean-Max Bellerive, tells CNN: "I believe we are well over 100,000,"
while leading senator Youri Latortue tells The Associated Press that 500,000 could be dead. Both admit they have no way of knowing.

The January 12, 2010, Haiti earthquake occurred in the boundary region separating the Caribbean plate and the North America plate. This plate boundary is dominated by left-lateral strike slip motion and compression, and accommodates about 20 mm/y slip, with the Caribbean plate moving eastward with respect to the North America plate.

Haiti occupies the western part of the island of Hispaniola, one of the Greater Antilles islands, situated between Puerto Rico and Cuba. At the longitude of the January 12 earthquake, motion between the Caribbean and North American plates is partitioned between two major east-west trending, strike-slip fault systems -- the Septentrional fault system in northern Haiti and the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system in southern Haiti.

The location and focal mechanism of the earthquake are consistent with the event having occurred as left-lateral strike slip faulting on the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system. This fault system accommodates about 7 mm/y, nearly half the overall motion between the Caribbean plate and North America plate.

The Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system has not produced a major earthquake in recent decades. The EPGFZ is the likely source of historical large earthquakes in 1860, 1770, 1761, 1751, 1684, 1673, and 1618, though none of these has been confirmed in the field as associated with this fault.

This is a example model of a strike slip fault....what happened in Haiti.
In a strike-slip fault, the movement of blocks along a fault is horizontal. If the block on the far side of the fault moves to the left, as shown in this animation, the fault is called left-lateral. If the block on the far side moves to the right, the fault is called right-lateral. The fault motion of a strike-slip fault is caused by shearing forces. Examples: San Andreas Fault, California; Anatolian Fault, Turkey [Other names: transcurrent fault, lateral fault, tear fault or wrench fault.]   TIP

so far 38 after shocks here is the list below.
After over 24 hours there are no recorded after shocks that are in the 3,2, or 1 categories....this is very disturbing news.  Haiti smallest after shock was recorded at 4.1 magnitude and still going strong.  All of them are pretty much moderate to light but not weak or very weak.  That is bad news when your trying to pull people out buried in rubble from fallen buildings.  I hope these aftershocks get lighter.  If you remember the 6.5 in Northern California that occured on the 10th....well the after shocks starting getting smaller significantly soon. Here is that record below:

Haiti earthquake after shocks should have been listed first....sorry.  I just wanted to compare 2 slip strike faults and their after shocks.  Haiti hasn't gone down significantly and thereby creates hazards when trying to dig people out and get aid to the populations there.    You can see that the Northern Cali earthquake from a few days ago started tappering off almost right away into the 2's and 3's.   Tip.

At least those 100,000-500,000 death tolls initially reported have dropped. The Red Cross estimated 45,000 to 50,000 people are dead. My initial guess was 30,000 dead. That was based on ten times the population of 3,000 dead in the 1906 SF quake as noted in my other post in this thread. The similarities of the two events gives some predicability. People might think you can't compare things 100 years apart but when a city crumbles, technology also fails temporarily erasing most of that 100+ year difference.

I'm sure we've had more massive quakes, but in recorded history China had one that killed 830,000 people.

Now why would anyone want to "occupy" Haiti. It did make me a bit nervous, however, when Obama said something about our presence (sp?) being indefinate? What did that mean?

Not definite, especially: a. Unclear; vague. b. Lacking precise limits

The UN will have to organize countries to go into Haiti to rebuild.  it will take quite a while.

Mary when I read that Scientologists post I was wondering if Tom Cruise would jump in a Jet and touch everyone. My first search came up with this. LOL

On Demand: Will Tom Cruise volunteer to heal the Haiti quake victims with his touch?

A group of 80 Scientologists were flown in from Los Angeles in the private jet of John Travolta, who flew the machine himself and was accompanied by his wife, Kelly Preston on the humanitarian trip. The goodwill gesture is believed to have cost US $ 400,000. The Travoltas have since returned back to the US the team of doctors and volunteers who accompanied them are persisting on with the relief efforts.

Tom Cruise is yet another high profile celebrity who is known for his association with Scientology. Haitians would love to have him visit their country and chip in with what he can and that would be reall touching! The Church of Scientology, founded by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard is widely regarded as a religion in itself in USA. The group was established in 1954 and has around 12 million members worldwide.- myVox

The Church of Scientology was formally incorporated as an organization in the United States in 1954 and has its world headquarters in Los Angeles, California. From its beginnings, the church has drawn considerable controversy. For many years, the United States government refused to recognize Scientology as an organized religion, which would have given the church tax-exempt status. In 1993, however, the U.S. government granted Scientology tax-exempt status as a religious organization.

In 1941, Hubbard entered the navy and served a public relations role.[46] He was able to skip the initial
officer rank of Ensign and was commissioned a Lieutenant, Junior Grade for service in the Office of Naval
Intelligence.[47] He was unsuccessful there, and after some difficulty with other assignments found
himself in charge of a 173-foot (53 m) submarine chaser.[48]

In May 1943, while taking the USS PC-815 on her shakedown cruise to San Diego, Hubbard attacked what
he believed to be two enemy submarines, ten miles (16 km) off the coast of Oregon. The battle took two
days and involved at least four other US vessels plus two blimps, summoned for reinforcements
and resupply.[49]

Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher, Commander Northwest Sea Frontier concluded after reviewing trip data and
other captains' accounts that there were no submarines in the area at the time.[49] Hubbard and
Tom Moulton, one of the ship's officers, subsequently claimed that the authorities' denials of any Japanese
submarine presence off the Pacific coast had been motivated by a desire to avoid panic among the
U.S. population.[50]

In June 1943, Hubbard was relieved of command after anchoring PC-815 off the Coronado Islands, which is
Mexican territory. There, he conducted unauthorised gunnery practice. An official complaint from Mexican
authorities, coupled with his failure to return to base as ordered, led to a Board of Investigation.

It was determined that Hubbard had disregarded orders, and he was given the punishment of
a formal warning and was transferred to other duties. Since this was the third leadership position Hubbard
had lost during his tenure, he was not given command authority on his next assignment.[51]

It was later reported that Hubbard had been relieved of command twice, and was the subject of
negative reports from his superiors on several occasions.[52][53] However, he also won some praise,
being described as a "capable and energetic" officer, "if temperamental", an "above-average navigator",
and as possessing "excellent personal and military character".[50]

In 1947, Hubbard wrote to the Veterans Administration requesting psychiatric help.[54]
