The trick to healthy living is making small changes...taking more steps, adding fruit to your cereal, having an extra glass of water...these are just a few ways you can start living healthy without drastic changes.

We like to make a 'cold & flu soup' with ...

1 can tomato soup + 1 1/2 cans water
add with

these ingredients placed in a blender or food processor -

handful of cilantro leaves

several garlic cloves sliced

one medium onion cut in pieces

lemon or lime juice to taste

also add 1/2 cup diced fresh/canned tomatoes if you like. (or put in blender also)

( I doubt if children would like this soup )

 good advice here....

My parents do this... you can buy a thin 3 ring binder and fill it with pages.  Take it with you

to the Doctor.

Fill it out before you call for an appointment with symptoms

and write in any questions you want to ask your Doctor when you get to the

appointment.    Design one for yourself...family members should each have one too... use

colorful covers.

here are some suggestions on how to set it up....

A Medical Notebook  is Not Just For Emergencies
..................................................................................

is an easy way to refer back to... what the Doctor advised at the appointment.... to refer to

what the pharmacist said about dosage and or drug interactions...  you won't have to

keep it all in your head  : )

.....................

On the first page of your three ring binder

Write down the following:

Patients full name
Patients date of birth
Patients city and state of birth
Patients medical insurance (you could photo copy their insurance card and put in here)
Patients address and phone number

2
Include a recent photo of the patient. Some doctors want a routine photo. It helps them to see progress or regression of a patient.

3
List all medications and when and how they are administered on the next page.
Make sure to list exact dosages and update this page as necessary.

4
Include any pages instructing the patient on the medications and/or MSDS sheets for each medication. Highlight specific dosages and specific instructions that may vary from the normal routine of things.

5
List all hospitalizations and surgeries (no matter how minor). List where the procedure/hospitalization was at (which hospital not where on the body) and any other pertinent information.

6
Keep a copy of the patients shot records in this file. If the doctor needs to know when the last tetanus shot was you will have that information available.

7
Keep an updated page of all the doctors your family member sees and for what. Make sure each doctors address and phone number are available. You may even go one step further and notate when the last visit was to each doctor.

8
Don't forget to add today's visit in in your file. Date it and notate any tests that were conducted and when you get results go back and fill in the results also.

9
Extra sheets of paper and a pen for note taking and writing down instructions if the doctor gives you any.

Organizing With Binders, A Medical Information Notebook
...................................................................................................

So recently, I expanded on my binder "library" by creating a binder for each of us. Each one contains copies of lab reports, lists of medications, our doctor's information, and more. Already, I've received compliments from medical staff at the hospital emergency room and two doctors' offices about how organized our information is. And I just started it! It's still a work in progress, but I can't tell you how helpful it is to have all the information at your fingertips at doctors' appointments or the hospital.

Let me share with you what I've done so far. In future updates, we can compare notes on any changes I've made or you can let me know what you did in my guestbook. You may want to keep one for yourself AND your kids. If you have an idea to share, share it with all of us in my guestbook below.

CURRY
....................

I only use the whole herb in food as a seasoning....

this is an interesting site below...  remember to always ask your Doctor FIRST...  before

you take anything.  As they mention in the article some people should not take it as an isolate taken from the whole herb....

Best to prefer whole herb over isolated curcumin. ...

...Therapeutic Properties: Turmeric contains curcumin and curcuminoids it is a first rate natural remedy for arthritis, it has an anti-inflammatory ingredient that can help alleviate pain.

It can also help protect the gallbladder and liver and provide a defense against cancer. Curcumin can also help inhibit the formation of cancer in breast tissue. Experiment on animal shows that curcumin slashed the risk of colon cancer by almost 60%, this phytochemical seems to neutralize cancer-causing compounds, stop cancerous changes in the cells and directly fight substances that enable carcinogens to spread and wreak havoc.

Turmeric also triggers better bile flow, which helps digest fats and reduces the risk of gallstones. It also helps generates the secretion of several enzymes that assist the liver in breaking down and metabolizing certain toxic substances. Some of these same phytochemicals inhibit the oxidative damage that allows cholesterol to coagulate and cling to the inside of arteries.

. Foremost Foods, International, Inc. of Pomona, California, is issuing
a voluntary recall on certain Tomi brand dried seafood products
because they have the potential to be contaminated with _Clostridium
botulinum_, a bacterium which can cause life-threatening illness or
death. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does
not look or smell spoiled. The products were manufactured by Kien
Long Seafood Company Ltd. of Viet Nam.

ProMED-mail is a program of the
    International Society for Infectious Diseases
    <http://www.isid.org>

    Date: Fri 12 Nov 2010
Source: CDC, _E. coli_ Outbreak Investigations [edited]
    <http://www.cdc.gov/ecoli/2010/cheese0157/index.html>

CDC is collaborating with public health officials in Arizona,
California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA), and the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety
and Inspection Service (FSIS) to investigate a multistate outbreak of
human infections due to _E. coli_ O157:H7. This is a rare strain of
_E. coli_ O157:H7 that has never been seen before in the PulseNet
database. PulseNet is the national subtyping network made up of state
and local public health laboratories and federal food regulatory
laboratories that performs molecular surveillance of foodborne
    infections.

To date, 37 persons infected with the outbreak strain of _E. coli_
O157:H7 have been reported from 5 states. The number of ill persons
identified in each state with this strain is as follows: AZ (19), CA
(3), CO (10), NM (3), and NV (2). Dates of illness onset range from 16
Oct 2010 through 27 Oct 2010. Patients range in age from 1 to 85 years
and the median age is 16 years. There have been 15 reported
hospitalizations, 1 case of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), and no
    deaths.

Laboratory testing conducted on 2 opened packages of Bravo Farms Dutch
Style Gouda Cheese purchased at Costco from 2 different case patient's
homes has identified _E. coli_ O157:H7 matching the outbreak strain.
Preliminary laboratory testing conducted on an unopened (intact)
package of Bravo Farms Dutch Style Gouda Cheese obtained from a Costco
retail location has identified _E. coli_ O157:H7. Preliminary
laboratory testing conducted on 21 additional opened packages of Bravo
Farms Dutch Style Gouda Cheese purchased at Costco from 2 other case
patient's homes has indicated the presence of _E. coli_ O157:H7.
Additional laboratory testing is currently ongoing to confirm these
    results.

FDA is working with its state partners to investigate Bravo Farms and
to identify potential sources of contamination. FDA has collected
    product samples for testing.

Additional investigative activities are ongoing and include:
    - conducting surveillance for additional illnesses that could be
    related to the outbreak;
    - gathering and testing food products that are suspected as possible
    sources of infection to see if they are contaminated with bacteria;
    - following epidemiologic leads gathered from interviews with
patients, food purchase information, or from patterns of processing,
    production, and/or distribution of suspected products;
    - investigating where in the distribution chain the point of
    contamination could have occurred.
Costco is cooperating and assisting with this ongoing investigation.

On 5 Nov 2010, Bravo Farms voluntarily recalled all Dutch Style Gouda
cheese because it may be contaminated with _E. coli_ 0157:H7. The
product was distributed primarily through Costco in Southern
California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico in 1.5 lb.
pieces. It was also distributed through various retail stores within
    California in 8 oz. pieces.

An unopened (intact) package of Mauri Gorgonzola cheese tested as part
of this ongoing investigation identified _E. coli_ O157:H7, which does
not match the outbreak strain. This cheese was cut, packaged and
distributed by DPI Specialty Foods. On 10 Nov 2010, DPI Specialty
Foods voluntarily recalled and warned consumers not to eat Mauri
Gorgonzola cheese with sell-by dates of 01/13/11 and 01/14/11. The
strain of _E. coli_ O157:H7 identified in the gorgonzola cheese is
rare with no human illnesses observed in the PulseNet database for the
    past several years.

Based on current information, there is a link with the consumption of
one of several cheeses offered for sampling and sale at the "cheese
road show" that was held at Costco Warehouses between 5 Oct and 1 Nov
2010 in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada. This
cheese is Bravo Farms Dutch Style Gouda Cheese (Costco Item 40654),
manufactured by Bravo Farms of Traver California.

Consumers who have any of this cheese should not eat it. Instead, they
should return the cheese to the place of purchase or dispose of it in
a closed plastic bag placed in a sealed trash can. This will prevent
people or animals, including wild animals, from eating it.

What is the correct dose of vit. D?

Well... we aren't outside in the sun all yr round as in the old days... so in winter especially we may need more.

Ask your Doctor    before taking increased Vit D.

...400 IUs set by today's government-mandated food labels, and higher than 1997 recommendations by the Institute of Medicine that ranged from 200 to 600 IUs, depending on age.

But it's far below the 2,000 IUs a day that some scientists recommend, pointing to studies that suggest people with low levels of vitamin D are at increased risk of certain cancers or heart disease.

    Q  More Vitamin D?
The more I read about all the benefits of vitamin D, the more I wonder if there’s any harm in taking more than the 1,000 IU per day that you recommend. Is there?

    A  Answer (Published 1/26/2010)

Your question is timely because I'm raising my recommendation of 1,000 IU of vitamin D per day to 2,000 IU per day. Since 2005, when I raised it from 400 to 1,000 IU, clinical evidence has been accumulating to suggest that a higher dose is more appropriate to help maintain optimum health.

Shouldn't the same standards and cautions be applied

    to warning labels

    to alert women

about diseases caused by "the pill" and all other forms of harmful hormonal contraception?

    ........................

    Risks and contraindications
    ...................................................

Combined oral contraceptives may influence coagulation,

increasing the risk of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism, stroke and myocardial infarction (heart attack).

Combined oral contraceptives are generally accepted to be contraindicated in women with pre-existing cardiovascular disease, in women who have a familial tendency to form blood clots (such as familial factor V Leiden), women with severe obesity and/or hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol level), and in smokers over age 40.
COC are also contraindicated for women with liver tumors, hepatic adenoma or severe cirrhosis of the liver, and for those with known or suspected breast cancer. (WHO category 4).

COC confer a risk of first ischemic stroke,[3] and current use significantly increases the risk of cardio-vascular disease among those at high risk.[4] These pills also lead to increased deep vein thrombosis.

The risk of thromboembolism varies with different preparations; With second-generation pills (with an estrogen content less than 50μg), the risk of thromboembolism is small with an incidence of approximately 15 per 100,000 users per year, compared with 5 per 100,000 users per year among non-pregnant individuals not taking the pill, and 60 per 100,000 pregnancies.[76]

In individuals using preparations containing third-generation progestogens (desogestrel or gestodene), the incidence of thromboembolism is approximately 25 per 100,000 users per year.[76] Also, the risk is greatest in subgroups with additional factors, such as smoking (which increases risk substantially) and long-continued use of the pill, especially in women over 35 years of age.[76]
COC decrease the risk of ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer,[23] and colorectal cancer.[77][1]

Monograph 91 of The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) stated in 2005 that COC increase the risk of cancers of the breast (among current and recent users),[1] cervix and liver (among populations at low risk of hepatitis B virus infection).[1][78] Research into the relationship between breast cancer risk and hormonal contraception is complex and seemingly contradictory.[79]

The large 1996 collaborative reanalysis of individual data on over 150,000 women in 54 studies of breast cancer found that: "The results provide strong evidence for two main conclusions. First, while women are taking combined oral contraceptives and in the 10 years after stopping there is a small increase in the relative risk of having breast cancer diagnosed. Second, there is no significant excess risk of having breast cancer diagnosed 10 or more years after stopping use. The cancers diagnosed in women who had used combined oral contraceptives were less advanced clinically than those diagnosed in women who had never used these contraceptives."[2]

This data has been interpreted to suggest that oral contraceptives have little or no biological effect on breast cancer development, but that women who seek gynecologic care to obtain contraceptives have more early breast cancers detected through screening.[80][81] While taking the pill, there are approximately 0.5 excess cancers per 10,000 women aged 16–19, and approximately 5 excess cancers per 10000 women aged 25–29.[76]
It is generally accepted by medical authorities that the health risks of oral contraceptives are lower than those from pregnancy and birth,[82] and "the health benefits of any method of contraception are far greater than any risks from the method".[83]

Some organizations have argued that comparing a contraceptive method to no method (pregnancy) is not relevant—instead, the comparison of safety should be among available methods of contraception.[84] Among contraceptive clients users of oral contraceptives had a slightly reduced all-cause mortality.[85]

Lead Contamination in Cocoa and Cocoa Products: Isotopic Evidence of Global Contamination
    ...........................................................................................................................................................

In this article we present lead concentrations and isotopic compositions from analyses of cocoa beans, their shells, and soils from six Nigerian cocoa farms, and analyses of manufactured cocoa and chocolate products. The average lead concentration of cocoa beans was ≤ 0.5 ng/g, which is one of the lowest reported values for a natural food.

In contrast, lead concentrations of manufactured cocoa and chocolate products were as high as 230 and 70 ng/g, respectively, which are consistent with market-basket surveys that have repeatedly listed lead concentrations in chocolate products among the highest reported for all foods.

One source of contamination of the finished products is tentatively attributed to atmospheric emissions of leaded gasoline, which is still being used in Nigeria.

Because of the high capacity of cocoa bean shells to adsorb lead, contamination from leaded gasoline emissions may occur during the fermentation and sun-drying of unshelled beans at cocoa farms.

    ........................................................

...small, elusive, parasitic insects of the family Cimicidae. The term usually refers to species

that feed preferentially on human blood; all insects in this family live by feeding exclusively

on the blood of warm-blooded animals.[1][2] The name 'bed bug' is derived from the

insect's preferred habitat of infesting houses and especially beds or other common areas

where people may sleep. Bedbugs, though not strictly nocturnal, are mainly active at night

and are capable of feeding unnoticed on their hosts.

Bedbugs have been known by a variety of names including wall louse, mahogany flat,

crimson rambler, heavy dragoon, chinche and redcoat.[3]

Largely eradicated as pests in the developed world (largely through the use of DDT) in the

early 1940s, bedbugs have been resurgent since about 1995.[4]

Anyone out there use baking soda as their primary ingredient for teeth and tongue brushing in place of toothpaste? In general I have a pretty bad problem with plaque, even with using an electric toothbrush, anti-plaque toothpaste, and flossing. When I went to have my teeth cleaned about four months ago, the dental hygienist told me she had just got back from a dental convention, and found out some good information about the reason plaque forms on ones teeth. She was told that the reason plaque forms on the teeth is from a strep-type infection that is found on the back of the tongue, and usually causes a white coating of the tongue, and by using baking soda will cause a change in the PH in the mouth preventing the strep-type infection from causing plaque. So naturally I decided to give it a try, and to my surprise my plaque problem is all but gone, along with the white tongue. After brushing my tongue with the baking soda I could feel what ever was growing behind my tongue, and I was able to spit up this yellowish ball. When I talk to older people they say that baking soda was all they ever used growing up, and given the fact that it's usually priced under a dollar and doesn't contain fluoride it works for me. I know it can be abrasive, so I use a soft toothbrush and brush lightly, but I really hit the back of my tongue because I think changing the PH must be the key.

I wonder if a PH imbalance might also have something to do with coronary artery disease and plaque build up?

    Your comments are wanted...

There is a lot of screening here.  Most of us take it for granted.... if we are insured.

A lot of this is common place in NY.    I imagine a lot of it is not mandated for families

with medicaid?   There are new screening areas... some are in lifestyle areas.  So I feel

sceptical about this type of screening... some families use food for reward or as a part of

entertainment... movies, snacks... some people eat due to depression, some out of habit.

Geting a handle on overeating seems a difficult task.   Bad food is everywhere.  When i

was a kid a snack at school was milk or an apple.

Some screening seems like a cattle call...  chances are you don't have it but get screened

because ...well just in case.    Some if it is very good.  This is why opinions are needed.
