OMG Flame Retardant is in Matresses

(WebMD)  Women with higher blood levels of flame retardants found in

some household objects, known as PBDEs, took about twice as long to

become pregnant as women with lower blood levels, according to a new

study.

Attack of the Killer Mattresses - Coming to TV News Near You!

Trevor Butterworth, November 6, 2007

...But there’s a problem, according to a September 25 CBS 2 Chicago, and an increasing number of local news stations across America - the new safety standard has been achieved by using chemicals that could make you sick.

Despite the CPSC addressing this concern with extensive migration/exposure assessment studies that looked at the potential for dermal absorption, inhalation and ingestion of these chemicals in adults and children (including cases of bed-wetting) and finding no evidence of appreciable risk,

news organizations found a klaxon to power their stories in the form of a pressure group "People for Clean Beds," who are "fighting" to keep "mattresses and bedding clean from toxic flame retardant chemicals."

Many Doctors Oppose this regulation.

As of July 1 2007 all mattresses nationwide, including crib, must

be flameproof and contain toxic chemicals. Please help get the

word out.

...Beware of Organic or other mattresses that claim they use no

chemicals. There are no

labeling requirements. There are no chemical free systems that

will pass the severe open

flame test, not even wool, they are all toxic. Your only safe choice

is a bare waterbed or a

prescription mattress.

Safer Ventilator Prevents Contamination From Water Condensation

... Ventilator oxygen is completely dry and needs to be humidified for the patient's comfort, but water can then condensate along the line, and allow the growth of microbes. The new system, based on capillary force, helps prevent condensation by hydrating oxygen closer to the patient's mouth.

Thinking way down the road to Our Good Health....  and Sanity     : )

Seniors Stuck At Home Day After Day.
.................................................................
.........................................................................

This article below is from 2005.... and where are we 5 years later?

The lack of specialized transportation for our Seniors is Shameful.

Seniors in rural areas are practically prisoners in their own homes.

Cut off from what the rest of us take for granted every single day.

Is this what you want for your own parents? yourself?

What type of transportation do you want available for yourself when you

stop driving?   If you don't drive after your early 80's... and you want to

live in your own home,

who will drive you?

Keeping Our Eyes on the Road:
How an Aging Population Will Get from Here to There
...........................................................................................

Byron Thames

excerpt-

...Along with our causes for concern about the gradual changes in elderly drivers, we also need to pay attention to the gradual changes in those people over 65, 75, and 85 who have given up driving. Because driving cessation may result in losing community mobility.

As a family doctor, I can tell you first hand what happens when seniors lose their independence and are stranded without adequate transportation options. It's not just a matter of a little inconvenience. They become sedentary and isolated, and it sucks the life right out of them - literally and figuratively.

It cuts them off from family, social opportunities and civic activities. It makes it harder to go to the doctor or the pharmacy. It too often leads to depression, obesity, even alcoholism, and declining health in general.

I've seen it in my practice, but I'm sure many of you in this room also know a relative, friend or neighbor who's gone from vibrant and vigorous to sad and lethargic, simply because they have no easy way to get around.

One of AARP's most recent studies found that non-drivers over the age of 75 say they face severe restrictions on their daily activities. In fact, they were six times as likely as drivers to miss doing something they would have liked to do because they did not have the transportation.

.......................

There is a non profit organization that shows people how to start a Senior Transpot

Service... where the Senior donates his/her car to the organization and drivers volunteer

or are paid to drive Seniors to appts, shopping, movies etc.  The value of the car is used to

offset the fees incurred to transport them, when the value of the car is used the fees are

paid out of pocket by seniors.   This works well in rural areas where people wish to live in

their own homes but do not drive.    Imagine... you give up driving at age 82-83 or so and

live to be 99 ....  16 years is a long time to sit at home with no car!

Let's do it for our parents.... and for ourselves.

Please talk about it at work... at church, with friends and write to Congress.
............................................................................................................................

..............

They have free kits to get your Senior Transport Service off the ground...

The semi-essential arginine, proline and all the essential amino acids, would have provided additional nutritional benefits for the rapid recovery from scurvy by
vitamin C when food supply was limited. The value of arginine, especially in the recovery of the critically ill sailors, is postulated as a source of nitric oxide, and the arginine-derived guanidino compounds as controlling factors for the activities of different nitric oxide synthases.

This review provides further insights into the use of the candidate "trees of life" by indigenous peoples in eastern Canada. It raises hypotheses on the nutritional and synergistic roles of arginine, its metabolites, and other biofactors complementing the role
of vitamin C especially in treating Cartier's critically ill sailors.

Key Words: VEGF • receptors • NO • chimeric • angiogenesis

There is substantial evidence supporting the idea that the process of angiogenesis requires the synthesis of endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO).

NO, characterized as a major endothelial-derived relaxing factor, exerts paracrine and autocrine roles in maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis, vascular tone, and microvascular permeability.

During the early steps of angiogenesis in which new blood vessels sprout from existing vascular beds, there is a persistence of vasodilation and increase in vascular permeability, suggesting that these hemodynamic changes in the existing vasculature are indispensable during an angiogenic process.

A number of angiogenic factors can triggers the release of NO, synthesized by the endothelial

isoform of NO synthase (eNOS). One such factor is the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF),

which as its name implies, is a critical mitogenic, chemoattractant, and survival factor for

endothelial cells1 in addition to being characterized as a potent vascular permeability factor.2

Early studies have demonstrated that VEGF can readily stimulate NO production in cultured cells

and isolated blood vessels and that NO is essential in mediating the VEGF-induced endothelial

cell proliferation and organization into tubes in 3D cultures.3,4 Subsequent in vivo studies have

also demonstrated that eNOS knockout mice had significantly attenuated VEGF and

ischemia induced angiogenesis and vascular permeability.5,6

These studies place eNOS derived NO as a key mediator of VEGF induced angiogenesis in postnatal mice.

Angiogenesis is a physiological process involving the growth of

new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels.

Next time you happen by an Asian Market... you may want to ask if they sell, Patra.

I have only bought Patra made by DEEP.

they come frozen.. the size of a small cookie... we wrap them in a paper towel and put

them (4) in the microwave for 1 min.

You can put 4-5 of them in the waver and with a glass of juice, it makes a nice snack.

They are spicy...

If you want to know more about them..

Making them would be quite an undertaking... frozen is fine...

allows the taste of salt without the adverse health risks of sodium. Plus, it has the added dietary benefits of two nutrients, potassium and lysine, which are essential to good health. Food scientists have searched for years for an alternative to salt. Potassium chloride has been the only known alternative, but it has an undesirable metallic taste. Our patented process combines L-lysine, which has its own salty flavor, with potassium chloride. Our patented process masks the bitterness. There are 356 mg of potassium chloride in a 1/4 teaspoon of AlsoSalt.

Stroke Study Boosts Non-Invasive Procedure
............................................................................

Less Invasive Stenting Procedure
Shown to Effectively Help Open Blocked Arteries in the Neck

By Jonathan LaPook, M.D

..................

Questions?
...................

Some people go in to the Doctor...

because the family has noticed personality changes...

small problems become gigantic to them/ grouchy

or the reverse

person seems too quiet and withdrawn/ slugish

If your carotid arteries are narrowed by more than 50% and you have been experiencing stroke symptoms- or if your arteries are at least 70% blocked but you do not have symptom-

your doctor may recommend that you undergo endarterectomy to reduce your risk of stroke.

In this operation, a surgeon cuts into the carotid artery to remove fatty plaque and small clots that are clogging the vessel.

The procedure has been shown to be highly effective.

In people with severe carotid artery stenosis who have stroke symptoms or have already had a stroke, endarterectomy can cut the estimated two-year stroke risk by more than 80%. Like all surgeries, however, endarterectomy carries serious risks, and not everyone is a good candidate for this operation.

The recent approval of a carotid stent by the FDA

now provides such patients with a less invasive alternative.

In carotid stenting, a doctor inserts the stent, which is a slender metal mesh tube, into the carotid artery to increase blood flow in areas narrowed by plaque. Recent trials have produced some encouraging news about the efficacy of stenting,

but the procedure is not risk free and it is not an option for everyone.

In addition, because the recent trials involved relatively small numbers of patients,

many experts are awaiting the results of a major study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, called the Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy vs. Stenting Trial (CREST), before recommending more widespread use of carotid stents.

More Thoughts On the Health Care Bill-

"Let's focus on the substance [of the bill]. If you think it will be better for the American

people, vote for it. If you think it will be harmful, don't vote for it. For me it was a close call

in my mind. This is not the way I would have written it. For me it came down to, we need

to try something. It may not be perfect. If it doesn't work exactly the way we hope let's

correct it. To just sit here year after year letting things fester, that's not the right way to

go."

"My Fellow Americans": The Speech Obama Should Give to Congress
by Dave Lindorff

As imagined by Dave Lindorff

My Fellow Americans.

I stand before you a chastened president. I made a mistake. Two mistakes really. (Wild applause from Republican side.)

I thought that Congress could do its job and through the deliberative process, produce a health care reform plan that would win broad support across the aisle and among all of you. But I'm afraid that I was wrong. Health care is an enormous industry--maybe the biggest and most powerful industry in the country--and it has far too much power in Congress. Literally thousands of lobbyists, carrying tens of billions of dollars in campaign contributions--have invaded these halls (and my house too, by the way) (relieved laughter) and distorted the process, and in the end have stymied reform. (Expect some hissing.)

Meanwhile, I have realized that the answer has been staring us in the face all along.

Heart Roundup: Device-Maker Probes, Too Many Angiograms

  •

    excerpt-

...The Justice Department is investigating and has won settlements with two lesser-known device makers. A former device saleswoman who brought those two cases has also sued Boston Scientific, Medtronic and St. Jude Medical. The DOJ hasn't joined in those cases and the companies say none of their top execs were involved in any illegal marketing of the devices. More on the situation is here.

Coronary angiograms, widely used tests to detect artery blockages in the heart, often turn up little or no evidence of disease, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine found. That suggests that the more than a million U.S. patients who undergo the diagnostic test each year at a cost of about $10,000 each, are frequently exposed to unneeded risks of a costly procedure, the WSJ says in another article.

The study of nearly 400,000 angiograms performed between 2004 and 2008 in the U.S. found that 62% of the patients didn't have evidence of significant obstructions, while 38% had important blockages. Of course, a clean angiogram can still provide useful informaton and the findings don't apply in cases when there is established heart disease or the threat of an imminent heart attack. Patients included in the study weren't previously diagnosed with heart disease and represent about 20% of those who get angoigrams.

Still, the data indicate overuse of angiograms. "We've got to get much smarter about how we're ordering and interpreting these tests," a Mayo Clinic cardiologist told the WSJ.

Health Care 101: A consumer primer on Obama's bill
    .........................................................................................

    Associated Press Writer Ricardo Alonso-zaldivar
Mon Mar 15, 4:48 pm ET

WASHINGTON - It took lawmakers a year to shape President Barack Obama's health care

JUST SAY NO... to unnecessary Ultrasound

    Abstract

Neurosonography is used as a primary imaging modality worldwide

for visualization of the developing brain and spinal cord in fetuses, infants

and children. During the entire process of brain development,

there is rapid cell turnover, a condition that is favorable for

genetic mutations once external stimuli are applied.

No clinical studies in humans have been performed

specifically to discuss the long-term impact of

postnatal ultrasound exposure of the central nervous system.

    Currently published studies concerning the

prenatal and postnatal use of Doppler or of ultrasound contrast agent use

and the developing central nervous system are insufficient to draw

    meaningful conclusions regarding safety.

By instituting a standardized examination and following appropriate patient handling

guidelines, the risk of an adverse outcome associated with neurosonography is minimized.

This paper recommends adoption of the ALARA principle and offers suggestions as to how

to minimize the risk of adverse effects in neurosonography (E-mail: barrlmd@ausrad.com).

Very Good Info On the Bill Here-
    ...........................................................

  • Big win for the AMA at the expense of States:  In the late 90's the feds gave up authority to determine Medicaid payments to providers, leaving all that authority in the hands of States.  States liked this because they could squeeze providers to save money.  Providers wanted federal "protection" from cost-conscious Governors.
  • This bill prohibits States from paying primary care doctors less through Medicaid than they receive in Medicare (for two years).  This is the camel's nose under the tent to a long-term increase in Medicaid payments to providers.  This means a loss of expenditure control for Governors, higher Medicaid costs for States and the federal government, and higher incomes for doctors.  This is also the beginning of the reversal of a strong bipartisan mid-90's policy consensus.  This is terrible policy.
  • Net effect of Bill #2 on taxes:  +$156 B higher taxes.  While that's the effect over a decade, the bulk of the tax increases occur in a six-year period beginning in 2014.
  • Adopts a version of the President's proposal for feds to regulate health insurance premiums in addition to States.  Secretary of HHS could "review potentially unreasonable premiums and may take corrective actions, such as requiring the insurer to pay a penalty, denying or modifying the premium or ordering the plan to pay rebates to consumers."  What is a potentially unreasonable premium??  Congratulations, AHIP.
  •  You have made your industry a federally regulated utility.  Have fun with that.

Senate Faces Slog Over Health Bill Amendments

Health Care Gains Start Soon - Bigger Ones Later

    by The Associated Press

     excerpt-

The real transformation of America's health insurance system won't take place until 2014.

Four breathtaking changes will happen simultaneously:

    * Insurers will be required to take all applicants. They won't be able to turn down people in poor health, or charge them more.

    * States will set up new insurance supermarkets for small businesses and people buying their own coverage, pooling together to get the kind of purchasing clout government workers have now.

*Most Americans will be required to carry health insurance, either through an employer, a government program or by buying their own. Those who refuse will face fines from the IRS.

    * Tax credits to help pay for premiums will start flowing to middle-class working families, and Medicaid will be expanded to cover more low income people. Households making up to four times the poverty level - about $88,000 for a family of four- will be eligible for assistance. But the most generous aid - including help with copayments and deductibles * will be for those on the lower-to-middle rungs of the income scale.

( and the income levels are???? )

When all is said and done, the majority of working-age Americans and their families will still have employer-sponsored coverage, as they do now. But the number of uninsured will drop by more than half. Illegal immigrants would account for more than one-third of the remaining 23 million people without coverage.

Cost could be the Achilles' heel of the whole effort.

"I hope it is not repealed, because we do need to extend coverage to most of our population," said Gail Wilensky, who ran Medicare for President George H.W. Bush and remains a leading health care adviser to Republicans. "But it could well be substantially modified. It expands coverage, but it does very little to take on two other major issues: improving quality and leveling the rate of growth in spending."

Rotarix rotavirus vaccine contaminated, officials say
    ................................................................................

    By Tom Watkins, CNN

    March 22, 2010 4:22 p.m. EDT

Rotarix, made by GlaxoSmithKline, was approved by the FDA in 2008. The contaminant

material is DNA from porcine circovirus 1, a virus from pigs that is not known to cause

disease in humans or animals, Hamburg said.

About 1 million children in the United States and

about 30 million worldwide have gotten Rotarix vaccine, she said.

    article here-

    ................

Si why are we selling rotavirus vaccine to

About 1 million children in the United States ??

On June 5, 2009, the World Health Organization

(WHO) recommended that rotavirus vaccine be included in all

    national immunization programs

Each year more than 500,000 children die from diarrhoeal disease caused by rotavirus,[2]

rotavirus infections were estimated to cause
    approximately 527,000  (475 000–580 000)
    deaths, predominantly in developing countries.
