Mysterious Fish Deaths Fan Villagers' Fears in Northern Turkey

Thursday, 17 February 2011

Sudden and unexplained mass fish deaths in the Black Sea region of Turkey have local residents worried about the safety of their water supply and calling on officials to solve the mystery.

When residents in Mescitli village in Gümüşhane province first observed dead fish in Harşit stream 15 days ago, they thought the fish had died of natural causes, said village head Cenk İnce.

“However, when we realized the number of dead fish had risen, we urgently informed the officials. There were fish for two kilometers along the shore, which worried us. We are using the stream’s water in our agricultural activities,” İnce said, according to the Doğan news agency, or DHA. He added that the villagers have urged officials to investigate immediately.

The provincial directorates of health, forest, environment and agricultural have reportedly launched an investigation, taking samples of the dead fish and the water from the stream.

Locals believe the deaths are due to pollution. “The fish died due to pollution produced by people,” one villager said.

“Forty years ago, we and our animals were able to drink the stream water. Water for our crops was provided from the stream. Now there is nothing growing here, life has ended here,” DHA quoted a local resident as saying.

The village has never seen anything like the fish deaths before, said resident Tacettin İnce.

Thank you for posting.  I've been thinking there is more to all of these mass animal deaths than what we've heard.  Whether it's just that they haven't discovered what's killing them yet (environmental or viral) or if someone's hiding something... who knows?

The Bible in Revelations predicted the death of fish. This is getting spooky! I am going to read Revelations again!

Dead dolphins along the Louisiana coast

WWL.com Reporting
At least 43 dolphins have now been found dead along the Gulf Coast, many of them baby dolphins.

Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries agents say it is an unusually high number of dolphins found dead or dying. LDWF Marine Mammal Strandings Coordinator Mandy Tumlin says 26 dolphins have been found beached since the first of the year in the state.

She says the oil spill doesn't easily explain all the animal deaths, "There was an increased in mortalities observed in 2010, that were being investigated prior to the oil spill."

Tumlin says not all beached dolphins found have been dead. She says one was recovered alive and is getting medical treatment and another seemed fine once placed back in open water.

She says testing will be done to determine what killed the others.

In Louisiana, about 80 dolphin deaths is average for a whole year.

Tumlin says necropsy labs are backed up with other oil spill-related testing and it's hard to say when they may know something about the dolphin deaths.

Mississippi and Alabama have reported at least 19 dead baby dolphins washing up along the coast.

Millions of dead fish at King Harbor in Redondo Beach [Updated]
March 8, 2011  10:11am

Authorities in Redondo Beach are investigating what killed millions of fish over the last day at King Harbor Marina.

Fish, including anchovies, sardines and mackerel were floating lifeless in Basins 1 and 2 of the north side of King Harbor Marina.

Dead%20Fish%20Mystery

"There’s basically fish everywhere you go in the harbor," said the harbor's assistant manager, Jason McMullin, who added that there were reports that a red tide may have driven the fish into the harbor in massive numbers where they died because of limited oxygen.

Redondo Beach public works officials were dispatched to the harbor to investigate further but did not have immediate comment.

The fish were attracting huge flocks of seagulls and other birds.

Updated at 12:15 p.m.:
Redondo Beach officials said initial assessments suggest oxygen depletion in the King Harbor basins caused the massive fish die-off.

City Manager Bill Workman said city officials with the help of marine experts would help determine if there was any environmental issue involved. Tests are now being performed on the water as officials begin removing the dead fish, which city officials estimated to be in the millions.

“There are no visible signs of any toxins that might have caused [the die-off] and our early assessment is that this was oxygen depletion,” Workman said. “This is similar to what we experienced five years ago but that was distinctly a red tide event but there’s no discoloration of the water, no associated foaming in the waves, Workman said. “There are no oil slicks or leaking of substances into the water.”

Workman noted that the harbor had been teeming in recent weeks with bait fish that even after their deaths “had no signs of degradation.”

Second massive Southland fish die-off has scientists looking for links

By Tony Barboza, Los Angeles Times      April 20, 2011

Six tons of sardines were found dead in Ventura Harbor on Monday, following a similar incident in Redondo Beach. Both groups died of oxygen deprivation, but what drove them into the harbors is a mystery.

Kazakhstan: Hundreds of Rare Saiga Antelopes Found Dead
May 31, 2011 - 4:17am, by Joanna Lillis

Hundreds of endangered antelopes have been found dead in western Kazakhstan, dealing another blow to conservation efforts to save these long-nosed creatures, Kazakhstan Today reports.

A total of 442 saigas a distinctive creature with a long, humped nose that allows it to filter air during the dusty summer months and breathe warm air during the freezing winters have been found dead, West Kazakhstan Region Governor Baktykozha Izmukhambetov told a cabinet meeting on May 31.

He said the deaths of 360 does and 82 calves may have been caused by an outbreak of pasteurellosis, a disease that attacks the lungs and which killed nearly 12,000 saigas in an epidemic last year. Scientists are also investigating whether some sort of poisoning from the flora, which is to say from the grass, is taking place, the governor added.

The saiga, which roams in remote areas of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Mongolia and Russia, is listed as Critically Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List.

The World Wildlife Fund identifies loss of habitat and poaching as threats to its existence: The horn of the male saiga is prized in Chinese medicine for use as a painkiller and antibiotic, creating a thriving and illegal trade.

Kazakhstan has the largest numbers of saigas in the world, but a population which numbered over a million in the 1970s has been decimated, and last year officials estimated it at 85,000.

600 dead penguins wash up in Uruguay

June 8, 2011 - 3:40PM

About 600 dead penguins have washed up on Uruguay's Atlantic coast over the past few days.

Experts are trying to determine what has killed the animals.

A navy statement says the latest batch is 200 dead Magellan penguins discovered on the shore at La Paloma about 200 kilometers east of Montevideo.

A marine animal rescue group previously reported that the carcasses of 400 Magellan penguins washed up around the resort town of Piriapolis along with dead turtles, dolphins and albatrosses. The resort is about halfway between Montevideo and La Paloma.

Experts say it is common for dead penguins to appear in the area at this time of year, but the extent of the die-off appears to be unusual.

Cleanup begins at Wasaga Beach after dead birds wash up on shore

Erin Criger, CityNews.ca

Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources will begin to clean a long stretch of Georgian Bay, near Wasaga Beach, on Monday after thousands of dead birds washed up on shore.

Crews will only be cleaning provincial parks. Private land owners will have to make their own arrangements to get rid of the birds.

"Everyone is concerned because there's just so many birds," one resident told CityNews.

"We've never seen this...We're just stunned and surprised and kind of shocked. It seems that they've been coming in any time there's a storm on the beach, a lot of waves," she added.

In all the years weve been here, and weve been here for over 50 years, weve never seen anything even remotely like this, said resident Rudy Chernecki.

The birds are some loons and grebes, but mostly long-tailed ducks.

They were first spotted on Saturday. Ministry spokesman John Cooper said these kind of deaths have been happening for years.

Were not sure exactly whats happening down there at the bottom of the lake, certainly its been increasing in occurrence since about 1998 that we started seeing these events take placewe have no way of stopping it from happening, said Cooper.

However, with up to 6,000 birds believed dead, it is one of the largest die-offs in recent years.

Cooper said botulism is usually the culprit: fish ingest botulism when feeding on the lake bottom and the birds eat the contaminated fish.

On Oct. 27, the Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed that the cause of death was Type E botulism.

Massive oyster die-off a mystery in Pensacola

PENSACOLA - State scientists will head to the Florida Panhandle this week to check on East Bay oyster beds where oystermen are reporting a die-off.

Oyster season opened Oct. 1. Oystermen have reported pulling up dead oysters from beds that had been filled with large, healthy oysters at the end of the last harvest season on June 30.

"We're finding very few alive," Pasco Gibson, a main supplier of the East Bay oysters, told the Pensacola News Journal. "This time of the year, we should be catching 500 to 1,000 pounds per boat a day. We're not even catching a hundred pounds."

350 Crow Deaths in India in Two Days!

Hazaribagh, Dec. 11: The mysterious epidemic that has claimed hundreds of crows in Jharkhand has now spread to Hazaribagh, with 350-odd scavengers perishing in Vishnugarh and Katkamsandi over the weekend, triggering panic among residents who have been advised by experts not to touch the carcasses.

More than 1,000 crows have died in Jamshedpur alone in the past one and a half months, besides a number of deaths in Ghatshila and Giridih

In a report sent to the Union agriculture ministry on Thursday, the Indian Veterinary Research Institute’s (IVRI) Bhopal centre had held the avian influenza virus, H5N1, responsible for the crow deaths in Jharkhand.

Here is the link. Be Well everyone! Tip

Thousands of dead birds litter a stretch of Georgian Bay shoreline

www.globalnews.ca

WASAGA BEACH, Ont. - As many as 6,000 dead birds have washed up on the shores of Georgian Bay in Ontario, say authorities, who believe botulism may be to blame.

Ontario Provincial Police Const. Peter Leon said Saturday the number of dead waterfowl is estimated to be between 5,000 and 6,000.

The dead birds are scattered along a nearly three-kilometre stretch north of the community of Wasaga Beach, said Leon.

Federal and provincial officials believe the cause of the death is a form of botulism, apparently from the birds eating dead fish, he said.

Dead herring mystery for Norway as thousands wash up on beach

Locals left scratching their heads after 20 tonnes of the dead creatures are found on beach in Nordreisa

Norwegians have been left puzzled at the sight of thousands of dead herring carpeting a beach in the northerly district of Nordreisa with some wondering if a predator had driven them to their death or a storm had washed them ashore.

Scientists were hoping to test the fish to see if they could ascertain the cause of death. Locals had more pressing concerns: how to clean up the 20 tonnes of dead creatures before they decay.

For doom-mongers, the fish were the second a sign in as many days that 2012 would live up to the apocalyptic prediction of the ancient Mayans, after hundreds of blackbirds reportedly dropped dead in Arkansas.
