Chinese Fishing quarantined outside the port, two dead
The cause of death of two crew. The MSP research in their laboratories. The authorities did not allow the entry of the boat to Montevideo.

 

The health authorities are trying to determine the cause of death of two crew members of a Chinese fishing boat is anchored near the entrance to the port of Montevideo (pictured).

The alarm went off last Tuesday when he passed the first of the crew. On Thursday passed the second in a mutual Montevideo. The crew members of about 30 people.

MSP investigates cause of death of two Chinese sailors, no other boarding

One died on board and another in a mutual. A third crewman boarding undiagnosed. The boat with 40 people on board is prohibited from entering the Port of Montevideo.

On Tuesday, an international agency called the arrival of a China flagged vessel to the port of Montevideo. She had on board a crew member who had died in South Atlantic waters and another patient with the same symptoms that the deceased, according to El Pais reported the Director General of Health, Marlene Sica.

Port and health authorities decided to go down to the crew to be cared for in a mutual and that the ship remained at anchor in coastal area (one prepuerto which allows you to meet the people who need it, refuel and supplies).

A few hours later, the man died at the hospital. And alongside the crew reported that another member started with the symptoms. "Today is the third person is admitted to a health center, no diagnosis but controlled and stable. It also took all safety measures, "said Sica.

The chief explained that several studies were done, but do not yet have a diagnosis. He clarified remaining paraclinical study results and autopsy of the bodies of the deceased.

With the results that are already on the table, the MSP ruled bacterial infections, influenza and antavirus. The three crew began with edema in the lower limbs, suffered fatigue and breathing difficulties. The two deceased heart failure continued until his death.

Sica said Uruguay reported the situation to the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization. "The idea is to generate a health alert in case that some country have a similar case. We do mostly with the aim of sharing information, "he said.

The Health Ministry says the issue is not of concern, but did generate alarm for not having a diagnosis. "We are working with all the guarantees for the population," said Sica.

It is estimated that there aboard the fishing boat about 40 people. The boat left China, stopped in Hong Kong and Singapore, where just refueled.

This is noteworthy because it's a Chinese boat, but the symptoms as described are more indicative of some kind of heart problem such as congestive heart failure. Lower leg edema, fatigue and dyspnea (or breathing problems) are not usually something you'd see in any of the infectious diseases we're watching right now, but three crew members with the same symptoms at the same times is extremely odd, especially given that two of the victims died. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out - thanks for posting Thumbs Up

Also people with pre existing conditions will die faster and different from those without them. If someone already has lung condition, it will take far less to compromise already compromised lungs which means it will put a lot of pressure on the heart to try to compensate for the failing lungs. The heart as you say going into failure would then cause those symptoms. The patient could die of heart failure but it would be caused by the virus just much sooner then normally seen due to the already existing condition.

 Renal or kidney failure has been  h7n9 associated. Could be flu...

Swelling in the legs, ankles, hands and face is often seen in kidney failure patients. It is also called edema in clinic and in serious conditions edema can affect internal organs and even cause pulmonary failure or congestive heart failure.

An updated article. They state they don't know what it is but deny it being flu,bacterial or hantvirus.   Not even in quarantine . This seems to be a common statement whether it is Alabama,Texas, saudi arabia..

Authorities of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) of Uruguay are trying to determine what caused the death of two crew members of a Chinese-flagged fishing vessel, which requested to be allowed at the port of Montevideo.

One of the sailors died aboard the boat while sailing in the waters of the South Atlantic and the other while being hospitalised at a clinic in Uruguay.

There is still another seaman with the same symptoms as those experienced by the crew members who died, confirmed to the newspaper El Pais the Director General of Health, Marlene Sica.

The Chinese ship Fu Yuan Yu 879 had landed in the Falkland Islands, where it received a distress call from another Chinese flagged fishing boat, the Fu Yuan Yu 981, to request the transfer of one of its crew members to a port where he could be treated.

The Fu Yuan Yu 879 agreed to take the crew members to the port of Montevideo, and on the way a third crew member became ill.

Due to this sequence of infection, it was determined that the vessel would remain in quarantine, without being able to arrive at port.

At present, the ship remains anchored at about 12 kilometres off the coast of Montevideo, at least until the Public Health decides otherwise.

The observed symptoms included swelling of the lower limbs, difficulty breathing and fatigue.

The death of the sailor who had arrived alive at Uruguayan territory was caused by heart failure.

Meanwhile, the results of the analysis performed to determine the cause of the infection are being expected.

Sica added autopsies will be conducted on the bodies of the two dead sailors and with respect to the inpatient, said he has shown "slight improvement."

"He's in a common hospital room, without oxygen," it was stated.

The Ministry denied that it is bacterial infection, influenza or hantavirus.

The anchored ship is engaged in fishing for squid (Illex argentinus) in South Atlantic waters and has reportedly 40 crew members aboard.

The rest of the crew can not have physical contact with any of the port officials.

The boat left China and made stops in Hong Kong and Singapore, before reaching the South Atlantic.

The National Maritime Authority and the National Port Administration are on alert and waiting for decisions to be taken regarding the Chinese ship, reported Prensa Latina.

Interesting that they picked up a crewman from a different ship who was also ill from this unknown illness. If I am reading this right then there were two ships from china with illness aboard.

Days spent killing two crew members came on a Chinese trawler. The MSP does not have an accurate diagnosis of the cause, but says there is no risk to the public.

 

In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, the director general of the Ministry of Health Public Health (MPH), Marlene Sica, explained the situation.

On Saturday Underline reported that a Chinese fishing was anchored off the port of Montevideo, quarantined, prevented from entering the port terminal by health authorities.

The reason was that two crew, Chinese citizens had died from a rare infection. A third was sick but now out of danger.

Health officials did not know the Sabbath, and do not yet know the cause of death of both triuplantes, who were treated at private health centers in Montevideo.

He said Tuesday the director general of health MSP, there is still no accurate diagnosis of the cause of death of the crew.

Still, Sica said discarded certain infectious diseases such as dengue and leptospirosis, which can pose a risk to the Uruguayan population.

The chief announced that a second ship is under surveillance with a person who was moved to Montevideo and is in serious condition.

In total there are two deaths, one serious and one fourth patient out of danger. All crew members arriving at Montevideo on Chinese fishing boats.

The Ministry of Public Health, reported that there is no health risk to the Uruguayan population, as to quarantine the crew prepared two Chinese-flagged fishing vessels, anchored in coastal area in the pre-port of Montevideo.



The boats are under quarantine due to the death of two crew members last week. Another patient, who is admitted to an institution of collective medical capital progressing well, while in the evening of Monday, May 3, attention is sought fourth crewman belonging to another boat, also a Chinese national . This patient, the day of the date, is hospitalized in critical condition.

In press conference this afternoon, the Director General of Health, Marlene Sica, reported that while not yet have a diagnosis of what the etiology and causes that trigger symptoms, including lower limb edema and dyspnoea -, for the studies, "have ruled most infections and diseases that involve a health risk to our population." In that sense, were discarded as influenza disease, dengue, hantavirus and leptospirosis, for example.

The MSP, awaits results of other paraclinical and toxicological studies, as well as the forensic report of the autopsy requested by the Portfolio to the Court acting, and I made the two patients who died, one in the South Atlantic and the other in a medical center in Montevideo.

Sica said that the procedures performed in these situations, corresponds to the recommended actions not only nationally, but also to those in the International Health Regulations.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) said the new crew member concerned is hospitalized in Montevideo in serious condition, but it is not known what the illness that afflicts.

The first ship with 40 people on board, entered Montevideo last week with a crew died and another patient, who after being treated at a local health center also died. Another sailor from that ship remains hospitalized.

"The first rule out diseases were infections such as influenza, dengue, leptosirosis, or hantavirus," he said at a press conference of Health's national director, Marlene Sica.

All affected had similar symptoms with lower limb edema, respiratory problems and heart failure.

Authorities ordered the autopsy of the two bodies, while analysis is being carried to the other two hospitalized patients.

"We are now waiting for toxicology results," said Sica, indicating that while performing a survey of the causes that may be behind the diseases.

However, "one of the boats over a year ago that left Beijing", which perform more complex account of what the crew have eaten or what they have been exposed and to determine the condition of the crew, he said.

Uruguay and reported the cases to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization.

That's true Pixie, but usually it's the flu bringing on bacterial pneumonia, and then presumably a progression through sepsis to organ failure. Whatever this is, it seems to be skipping steps and starting with the symptoms of heart or kidney failure (lower leg swelling, pulmonary edema and shortness of breath) with no mention of flu-like symptoms prior to it, unless the reporting is flawed and leading us to the wrong conclusions. Still pretty worrying, especially with multiple pandemic threats out there, and both vessels being from Southeast Asia. Definitely one to keep an eye on in case we find out we weren't getting the whole story.
On a side note - have you noticed how H7N9 and MERS can both progress to kidney failure? What's that about?

With all countries involved, their officials seem a bit vague explaining what they found. Confusing info, H1N1,H7N9 and MERS co circulating we haven't addressed the possibility of mutations or recombination.  I think in short order we are going to have a cascade of cases of something....worrisome.

Jacksdad, When my mom died of a old bacteria that ended up becoming a super bug her kidneys failed also. What we were told was the massive doses of two different strong anti biotics caused it. Does that make sense?? Could that be the culprit.

The Ministry of Public Health (MPH) expects to receive on Monday the 
forensic report two Chinese sailors killed, one at sea and 
another in Montevideo, fish belonging to that flag 
Asian. 

In addition, there were two other fishermen of that nationality who were 
interned in private, for the same reasons, and that 
developed favorably. 

This Monday in the Council of Ministers, the Secretary of the Presidency 
Homero Guerrero said that at the meeting the Minister of Health 
Pubic, Susana Muñiz, said one of the deceased died 
"Tropical parasitosis". 

From the Secretary of State indicated to The Observer that the 
laboratory tests at two boarding schools, and was 
similar in all cases was "disalimentación" patients, 
which means they were poorly fed. Also determined

On Tue 4 Jun 2013 the Uruguayan government placed under quarantine a 2nd Chinese-flagged vessel near the coast, after one of its crew presented with symptoms similar to those of 2 sailors from another ship of the same origin who died recently. The Ministry of Health (MOH) said the new crew member is hospitalized in Montevideo in serious condition, but the illness that affects him is not known. The 1st ship, with 40 people on board, entered Montevideo last week (week of 27 May 2013) with one crew member dead and another one sick, who after being treated at a local health center also died. Another sailor from that ship remains in hospital. "Infectious diseases such as influenza, dengue, leptospirosis, and hantavirus infection have been ruled out," the national director of health, Marlene Sica, said in a press conference. Those affected had similar symptoms with lower limb edema, respiratory problems, and heart failure. Authorities ordered the autopsy of the 2 bodies, while tests are being carried out on the other 2 hospitalized patients. "We are now waiting for toxicology results," said Sica. However, "one of the boats left Beijing more than a year ago," making it more difficult to determine what the crew have eaten or what they have been exposed to in order to identify the cause of illness, she said. Uruguay has reported the cases to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization.

Chinese jiggers’ seamen landed in Montevideo died of lack of proper food and tropical parasitosis
The most probable death cause of the Chinese crewmembers from two jiggers in quarantine outside the port of Montevideo was lack of sufficient nutrient and balanced food plus tropical parasitosis, according to the primary forensic reports from Uruguayan health authorities.

The jiggers Fu Yuan Yu 879 and Fu Yuan Yu 981 which normally operate in the South Atlantic arrived in Montevideo a couple of weeks ago with two dead crew members and another two with similar symptoms.
Immediately hospitalized in Montevideo, the two crewmembers are now recovering favourably, according to Uruguayan health sources. Symptoms included oedemas in the legs, fatigue, respiratory difficulties and heart insufficiency.
Fearing some exotic disease with possible contagion risk, Uruguayan authorities ordered the two jiggers in quarantine a few miles off the port of Montevideo, while forensic staff analyzed the case.
On Monday at the usual ministerial cabinet meeting, the Secretary of the Presidency, Homero Guerrero revealed Public Health minister Susana Muñiz had said that one of the crew members had died of ‘tropical parasitosis’.
On Wednesday Dr. Raquel Rosa, head of the Epidemiology Department from the Public Health ministry confirmed that laboratory analysis on the two Chinese sailors hospitalized were similar: “ill-fed, lack of proper food, with a deficit in nutrients and vitamins”.
“What we are facing is not a scenario compatible with any infectious situation, but rather a serious lack of albumin and vitamins” said Dr. Rosa who added they were isolated cases the result of a vessel at sea over a year “with crew members not feeding properly and eating poor food”.
Meanwhile port authorities reported that the Ministry of Public Health has lifted the quarantine ban on the jiggers and they should dock any moment once the final forensic report is received and proper arrangements made including a cordoned area round the vessels.
Last week Dr Marlene Sica Director General of the Public Health ministry had anticipated following the primary forensic results of the two dead seamen that “highly infectious diseases have been discarded as well as those that imply a sanitary risk for the population”. This referred to diseases such as influenza, dengue, Hantavirus and leptospirosis.
