The sun is so quiet right now, no worries at all.  Why do you think we are entering a mini ice age?  Lack of sunspots would be the reason, that is why we have 60% more ice on the poles right now.  Global warming is just another way to get more tax out of the average man.

It was a post about a huge CME, not an invitation to deny the obvious. Coronal mass ejections of this size would still kick our butts, whether the sun is entering a solar minimum or not.

I'm much more concerned about an EMP as opposed to a CME right now, but either one will be horrible.  Anything like 1859 The Carrington Event would be deadly.  Not meaning to dog out your post, if taken that way, I apologise.

Sorry - I was nursing a headache that refused to budge this morning and could have been a little more civil myself. My apologies.
Turboguy is one of our resident experts on all things EMP/CME related, and I've had a few discussions with him on this one. I respect his views (although his political leanings are about as far from mine as it's possible to be) and he puts up some very convincing arguments about EMPs being less of a threat than a Carrington type event. Through his job he has a solid background in this stuff and hopefully he'll chip in if you want to discuss it, although he hasn't been on much lately.
If you really want to scare yourself, google the Charlemagne Event of 774-775. That sucker was believed to be as much as 20 times more powerful than 1859's firework show Shocked

Solar Flares Disrupt Communications on Earth, Could Send Shockwave on Friday the 13th

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/technology/2014/06/solar-flares-disrupt-communications-on-earth-could-send-shockwave-on-friday-the-13th/?utm_source=web&utm_medium=twitter

The sun has had three major solar flares on its surface in the past two days that have affected communications on Earth and could send a shockwave through Earth this Friday, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The “solar events” caused brief blackouts in high frequency communications when they struck, twice on Tuesday morning and once this morning, all between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. EDT.

The “solar events” caused brief blackouts in high frequency communications when they struck, twice on Tuesday morning and once this morning, all between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. EDT.

Three X-class flares erupted from the left side of the sun; the first two from left occurred June 10, 2014, and the last occurred June 11, 2014. (Goddard/SDO/NASA)

Solar flares are bursts of radiation on the sun’s surface. The disturbance to Earth’s atmosphere can disrupt GPS and communications signals, according to NASA.

One of the flares created a “coronal mass ejection” that actually could come into contact with Earth on Friday, according to NOAA. The ejection is essentially a huge cloud of plasma that could hit the Earth and cause a shock wave, affecting communications systems. If an ejection were to hit Earth on Friday, scientists expect it would only cause a minor geo-magnetic storm, according to NOAA.

The flares were observed by NASA, which posted stunning photos and videos of the events on its website.

I can't get the video link to work so to watch that, please click the article link :) Sorry about that.

Great, Satori!  A nice big carrington event!

Ok,Ok its just a little one coming, but we can all show respect to the Doomer Porn God.  After all when you get to my age, a good CME that wipes out all those squeeking, bleeping, light flashing, irritating gizmos that the young have (that us old fogies don't really understand) would allow us to look dissaproving at our children and say:

"I told you so!" and watch that little italian plumber that runs across everything they touch pop into oblivion as their horrible gadgets melt into nothing.

Well, I can dream.........

lol I love my video games, but I am not as obnoxious about playing them as some are. Mario's franchise  is actually older than me by 6 years and I'm 24 going on 25 haha You're not an old fogie, WillobyBrat. I come from an older family where all my first cousins are at least 40, so I don't consider anyone under 80 as old :)

To be honest, I have never heard of the doomer porn thing, anywhere but here.

Funny, because I write dystopian fiction in my free time, and read dystopian and post apocalyptic books and have never heard it used by anyone before except here. Actually, I don't like things with the "shaming", "porn", "hack" or "culture" suffix. It just annoys me as a Linguist. lol

I understand, Hachiban.  Hubby can't stand "genre",  word or concept.  I could never get my head around cyberpunk, the whole "style before substance" idea.

I confess I loved the whole idea of "doomer porn" though.  You would too if you had seen WillobyBrat read the stuff.  The howls of laughter could make me jump from my seat.  Cries of "you can't do that you idiot!" or "'and another twit* bites the dust!"  could become more unsettling than the actual catastrophe would be.

He wrote a story from the DP genre himself.  It started with Joybugmoonrabbit IV and his brothers Joybugmoonrabbits III, II and I urinating on the grave of the hippy father who named them.  Its amazing how little horror the post-apocalypse landscape had for me after that.

haha I like steampunk in the way the movies/shows are designed, and I like the fashion, but hate the word (also it's crazy expensive. I go to the conventions in Northern California) . I am literally always yelling at the books I read, it's almost as bad as when I watch the movies or tv shows.  Even my own novel I am writing I yell at my characters haha I hope to be done by the end of the fall (keep pushing my deadline back as I keep getting writer's block) and then go to literary conventions to meet agents. Actually, talking to you inspired me to write a few pages today.

Pushed my novel finishing back again, now to get it done when it's done haha I think the deadlines were contributing to my writer's block. lol (updated 10/23/14)

Well Hachiban, what a nice young lady you are.  I knew there had to be someone out there who did not think that I was a paranoid technophobic old fogie.

But, seriously, good to hear you are writing.  I have not published anything for 30 years and recently found an old sci-fi that I had given up after a rather messy divorce (from my first wife).  I have not written or published anything seriously since then, inclucing poetry. Reading what you said to Technophobe (my third and current wife) has made me look seriously at writing SF again.

All the best for your book.

(note from Technophobe:  That had better be last wife!)

Chuck - fancy meeting you here Big smile

I watched the partial eclipse today (try standing on the street wearing a welding helmet sometime - the looks are priceless) and I could clearly see the cluster of sunspots. Are those the ones you're talking about, Satori?

They must have rotated the picture I posted (take by an observatory in LA) because the sunspots were clearly at between 6 and 7 o'clock on the sun's face when I saw them. Anthony Watts website shows it at the 8 o'clock position yesterday, so it is in the process of lining up with us. Based on that timeline, it'll be pointing in our direction in the next day or so. Growing to the size of Jupiter (80,000 miles across), it has generated 27 C-class flares, 8 M-class flares and 2 X-class flares since the beginning of the week. Lovely...

The partial happened late in the day (rush hour) here and the sun was low on the horizon. It was so bright it was blinding at that angle caused problems for drivers on their way home and many cars pulled over as they were unable to see. The look of the landscape was strangely over exposed. Interesting.
Interested....

Second Geomagnetic Storm In 48 Hours Could Strike Earth as Soon as Wednesday

Space weather forecasters say Earth should prepare for the second geomagnetic storm in 48 hours to hit Wednesday.

The first storm slammed Earth Monday and earned a "severe" G4 rating, the second highest classifcation, according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).

NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center's forecast model expected energy from another CME to arrive Wednesday evening, triggering a new geomagnetic storm.  (NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center)

Scientists explain the solar activity was the result of the sun releasing a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which NASA describes as “huge explosions of magnetic field and plasma from the Sun’s corona." The CMEs were released on June 18, June 19 and June 21.SWPC forecasters say the same active region of the sun released another CME June 22, which will likely trigger the next event starting Wednesday evening.
(PHOTOS: Geomagnetic Storm Triggers Northern Lights  North America could again see a spectacular display of Northern Lights. The storm that hit Monday into Tuesday triggered dazzling auroras at latitudes much futher south than you'd expect. EarthSky.org said people as far south as New Mexico reported seeing the lights. The gallery at the bottom of the page shows you some of the jaw-dropping pictures, including one view from astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

The skyshow was just one of the side effects. Spaceweather.com reports there was a “moderately strong blackout of shortwave and low-frequency radio signals over North America,” and that the Earth’s poles experienced a deeper blackout. It's not yet clear how strong this second geomagnetic storm could impact Earth, but SWPC says moderate radio blackouts are possible.
