There is fear that the United States might default.

If they do, there is going to be a SERIOUS problem. It's why I say, and have said, that the budgetary conversation involving the debt limit is *FAR* more important than the stupid 0babacare fiasco. I'd even go so far as to say that the budget conversation eclipses the various influenza strains making the rounds.

The day, hour, minute and second the welfare checks stop or aren't worth the paper they're written on will be the day the cities burn.

And not only are we heading there, under this catastrophe of an administration, we're accelerating! At this point the interest rate is something absurdly low, like 0.1%. If they increased it to a paltry 3%, government's total revenue would only cover about 80% of the interest on the national debt. 3% is actually considered low interest rates. Back in the early eighties it was 11%. At that point, I don't even think our GDP would cover the interest alone.

If this ship starts sinking to the point that there are bank runs, it's going to get ugly. Really, really, unbelievably ugly.

Have mostly been lurking on this thread, but it is closely tied to my thread on a possible stock market crash.  Lately, searching for data, I found a highly informative list of what is still open in .gov on a fairly blatant conspiracy site.

The mechanism is already in place to limit the amount of money one can pull in many of our banks in the U.S.

Bank account withdrawal limits are seen by banks as one way to limit the attractiveness of ATM users as robbery targets. Any thief knows the person making a withdrawal cannot get more than $500 at a time on average. He must then consider if the crime is worth the risk.

Comment: Personally, I think an imposed limit severely lowering  the amount which could be withdrawn from an ATM as well a requiring 7 days notice to make a withdrawal, would cause a run on the banks.

Perhaps a one day run would not shut them down, but continuous depletion of the available cash over a 30 day period would go a long way towards making such a thing possible.
