We all have a lot to fear. If MERS starts spreading easily we are in big trouble. We all need to watch this one.

I wonder how bad MERS will work out, will it be like a "normal"flu season but on top of the flu season that is going around at the time ? How will MERS interact with other healthissues ? Will it for example make the spread of resistent tuberculosis easier ? Will it make flu cases more deadly ?

Another problem is how authorities deal with it. How long will the WHO keep telling that MERS comes from infected camels while it has evolved into a human-virus ? Will there be travelrestrictions while that might be to late ?

It might be very hard even for experts to make realistic expectations. The MERS-virus is developing, came from camels, might spread to other animals and get worse or develop away from humans.
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

They may well be spooked and rightly so, but they are just practicing social distancing reacting to the situation at hand.

This is really interesting!  Arabs seem to like to consume raw camel's milk, which is one avenue for transmission.

Not only do they drink raw camels milk they think it has healing powers. Many people think it can cure cancer and all manner of disease. This could account for so many people with underlying disease getting MERS.

Now THAT is some good, gum-shoe epidemiology!  Great insight, thanks!  I think that is a very valid hypothesis that could be tested in the field.

The surge in cases has to be due to either more exposure to camels or more exposure to tomb bats.....this time of year sees a lot of activity in camel breeding and camel racing from what I've read.

This is like watching a train wreck in slow motion...eventually, some super-spreaders will erupt among the human hosts, and spread MERS like crazy.

I remembered reading this a few months ago and it just made sense.

Healing Properties of Camel Milk

Camel milk's numerous medicinal values have benefited these camel herding tribes and the Bedouins for centuries. They believed to enhance the curative powers of camel milk; the camel's diet must consist of certain plants. Researches have shown that even without these special plants[1] the milk is still good for most ailments among which are:

General Well-being: The numerous nutrients in camel milk help promote our body natural defenses[1]
Anti-aging: Alpha-hydroxyl acid that is present in camel milk help smooths fine lines[7]
Cancer: Camel milk has anti-tumor properties[6]
Diabetic: The presence of high-level of insulin-like protein in camel milk (about 52 micro unit/ml) help reduce the effect of diabetes[3][4]
Liver disease: Camel milk has antiviral properties that help reduce liver inflammation. The milk also have many nutrients that are required for healthy liver function[1]
Autism: It is rich in immunoglobulin that will strengthen the body's autoimmune system. This will help treat and heal autism[5]
Thalassemia: The curative properties of camel milk will protect our body from oxidative injury[9]
Acne and Eczema: The anti-microbial properties will act as natural cleanser[6]
Arthritic: The lactoferrin in camel milk will remove the free iron from joints of arthritic patients[1][6]
Tuberculosis: The antibacterial and antiviral is known to destroy the mycobacterium tuberculosis[8]
AIDS: AIDS patients in Africa were fed with camel milk to help them recover[7]

Many people can benefit from camel's milk healing properties. However, as with any alternative and traditional remedies, please seek your doctor's advice before starting on this camel milk program.

Mers virus: Saudis warned to wear masks near camels

Masked man posing with camels, Saudi Arabia, 11 May 2014Research has been focusing on the role of the camel in the spread of the virus

Saudi Arabia has urged its citizens to wear masks and gloves when dealing with camels so as to avoid spreading the deadly Mers virus.

The agriculture ministry advised people not to come into contact with camels unless necessary and to wash their hands if they did.

Saudia Arabia is the country by far most affected by Mers, with 133 deaths since the virus was detected in 2012.

Nearly 500 people in the kingdom have been infected.

Particles of the Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers) coronavirus Mers is part of a large family of viruses

Mers - Middle East respiratory syndrome - has also spread to other countries in the Middle East.

The disease is a coronavirus, a large family of viruses that also includes the common cold and Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome). It causes fever, pneumonia and kidney failure.

"It is advisable to wear protective gloves, especially when dealing with births or sick or dead (camels)," the agriculture ministry said in a statement.

Middle East respiratory syndrome

It suggested boiling camel milk and only eating cooked camel meat.

The ministry's statement comes as research by health experts has focused on the role of the camel as a carrier of the virus.

The camel is a central part of traditional Saudi life and the authorities have only recently linked the outbreak to the animals.

But some farmers have mocked the official warnings, with one posting a video of himself hugging and kissing his camels, asking one to sneeze into his face.

Saudi farmers defy warnings on camels amid Mers fear

Health authorities have called for caution in dealing with camel meat, milk

Manama: The formidable challenges faced by Saudi Arabia’s health authorities to raise awareness of the dangers of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers) Coronavirus have become obvious in pictures and videos posted online by camel farmers. Scroll down to watch.

By Saturday night, Saudi Arabia had said that the death toll from the virus in the kingdom had touched 139 and the number of infections stood at 480.

Although some studies have concluded that the virus was “extraordinarily common” in camels and the Saudi acting health minister urged people to keep away from raw camel meat and milk and to avoid sick camels, owners have refused to pay attention.

Some of them are now openly challenging the claim that camels were a likely source of the deadly infection.

A Saudi farmer last week posted a clip of himself hugging and kissing camels while pouring scorn on the warnings to be cautious with the animals.

“Do sneeze in my face,” he said as he hugged one camel, putting his face against its head. “They claim camels carry the coronavirus,” he said, sarcastically.

Another Saudi national posted a picture showing him kissing a she-camel on the mouth to prove that the animals, very popular in Saudi Arabia and throughout the Gulf, could not be the source of infection.

Abdul Juraiwi Al Qahani, a well-known farmer, said that he was challenging the health ministry “to produce a single evidence that camels were the source of the coronavirus” and asked its officials to review their data and conclusions, local news site Al Weam reported on Sunday.

Other farmers also rejected the ministry’s caution warnings, arguing that they had lived for decades with camels and had never been infected by them.

The announcement of the latest fatalities in Saudi Arabia came the day after the WHO said it would hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the spread of the virus.

The UN health agency’s emergency committee has already met four times to discuss the mysterious coronavirus since it surfaced in 2012.

“The increase in the number of cases in different countries raises a number of questions,” spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told reporters in Geneva on Friday.

...as we suspected!!  LOL

SARS was initiated by Chinese who insisted on consuming the civet cat as a delicacy, so this will probably have a similar outcome.

However, SARS was tamped down in a hurry, and afflicted nations (Canada especially) fully participated with WHO and others.  If MERS spreads to conflict areas (Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan etc.), I don't think many aid workers will want to insert themselves into those situations.  I wouldn't.

RIP Carlo Urbani, MD (gave his life when he discovered SARS in Viet Nam)

We have all kissed a few toads Astrologic.  Your handsome prince can take a while to arrive.

A huge percentage of camels tested, however, tested positive for MERS.  That is not an opinion, however, it is a scientific fact.

Having said, the method of transmission from camel to man is unproven.  So it could come from elsewhere or from more than one source.

Don't give up kissing.  The prince will be worth all the "YEUCH!"S.  EVENTUALLY

From what I've read about conditions in these areas and in the refugee camps, with the number of malnourished, large numbers with preexisting conditions, not to mention Polio, Hepatitis, measles, dysentery and many other diseases spreading the last thing they need in MERS but I would not be shocked to find out it's already there.

Astrologic: I am aware that certain camels and bats, have tested positive for antibodies for what is now being called Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. This does mean that this is where the disease came from, or that this is the source for the human illness. When quackish experts are confronted with something they cannot comprehend, they find a someone or something to pin for their own insecurities and lack of knowledge.

It's worth it for everyone to refresh their memories of the natural history and epidemiology of SARS, which took the life of a brave WHO physician, Dr. Carlo Urbani.

Viet Nam took very aggressive steps to contain this disease & did almost everything correctly:

However, if SARS takes hold in the slums of Pakistan, refugee camps in Syria/Turkey/Iran etc., I think all hell will break loose.

Remember, this is a corona virus = no vaccine, no treatment.  Only containment and social distancing can beat this one.  If we don't identify the animal reservoir, this thing will keep on smoldering.

Agreed this should be in general discussion, but you need to chill on criticizing other posters beliefs or comments.

Other posters should find a forum that is relevant to their particular 'beliefs or comments'.

This forum is for news and comments related to emergent illness and pandemic preparedness.

Rickster - You need to chill.

This is where we should all be able to come in the event of an emergent viral event. These crazy rants only get in the way of rational, useful information that could save a lot of lives.

When the ***** hits the fan, I for one do not want to have to be wading through these off topic, mystic, conspiratorial posts that are often so irrelevant that most of us can't even make sense of them. Some are not even in English. How is that going to help??

I agree with Carbon! If we all would stop giving them the attention they are seeking most of them would go somewhere else to find it.

If a thread doesn't belong in the news section we can legitimately move it to general discussion, but we can't do that to comments within a thread. As a partial solution, may I suggest that people stop requoting multiple quotes? If you want to take issue with a particular point, first take a breath and ask yourself if it's going to detract from the thread before you begin to type. If you still want to reply, choose the relevant text to quote - you can edit it just like you can your own content so we don't have huge black boxes of quotes to wade through.
Guest - welcome to AFT, and try to understand that this isn't by any means a new development. Trying to keep people on track without stifling debate or deleting posts we don't like has been an ongoing battle since the site started. Feel free to join - you're obviously very focused on the problems of emerging pathogens, and I think having you as a contributing member would be an asset. And rickster is right - please don't be put off by the OT stuff and bickering and lose track of why we're all here. If you pick and choose what you read and leave the rest alone, AFT is an invaluable tool when it comes to prepping for the worst - and more importantly, seeing it coming before everyone else does Thumbs Up
