Enterovirus EV-D68

Posted 9:00 am, September 8, 2014, by CNN Wire and Stephanie Ando, Updated at 05:26pm,

http://myfox8.com/2014/09/08/what-is-enterovirus-ev-d68-the-disease-causing-alarm-in-parts-of-us-including-nc/

A respiratory virus that has sent hundreds of children to hospitals in Missouri is causing alarm across the Midwest and beyond.

Several states – including Colorado, Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, Oklahoma, Utah and Georgia – have contacted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for help investigating clusters of the virus that’s being blamed for the illness.

There are no reported cases of the virus in North Carolina, but state public health officials say they are monitoring the outbreak in other parts of the country closely.

The bug that appears to be causing most of the concern has a typically arcane name — Enterovirus EV-D68 — but many of its symptoms are very common.

This virus worries me a bit. If ebola cases start showing up will they be dismissed as ev-d68 in the early stages.

comment: I am getting direct reports of this.

Over the past three weeks, hundreds of children have come down with what the CDC believes is human enterovirus 68, ABC News reports. The virus causes symptoms like coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing, according to the CDC.

CNN reports that ten states have been in touch with the CDC regarding the virus: Colorado, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Kentucky.

To help stop the spread of the virus, some hospitals have banned children from visiting, according to the New York Daily News.

There is no vaccine or specific treatment for enterovirus 68 infections, according to a Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services advisory. "Many infections will be mild and self-limited, requiring only symptomatic treatment," according to the bulletin. "Some people with severe respiratory illness caused by EV-D68 may need to be hospitalized and receive intensive supportive therapy."

There is something about D68 that makes it worse.

In one hospital 400 children have been seen with this.

Twelve states have contacted the CDC for assistance in investigating clusters of enterovirus: Alabama, Colorado, Michigan, Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Utah. Four -- Colorado, Illinois, Missouri and Iowa -- have confirmed cases of Enterovirus D68, also known as EV-D68.

DENVER - Metro Denver emergency rooms are anticipating busy days ahead as Enterovirus 68 continues to strike young patients.

Over the weekend, Children's Hospital of Aurora reported 447 respiratory visits to its emergency departments, with 39 hospitalized. On Monday alone, its emergency departments saw 199 respiratory visits with 17 hospitalized.

At Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, doctors are seeing about seven times the number of respiratory cases than normal for this time of year, said spokeswoman Angie Anania.

"We've been in touch with all of our hospitals. We're asking them do you have concerns for staffing, do you have concerns for supplies," said Denver County Health Department planner Karri Hobaica.

As hospitals deal with the strain, doctors at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention face the challenge of trying to figure what the virus will do next.

comment: The virus continues to spread in the U.S. with no end in sight to continued infection.

Norovirus types of diseases can be very contagious.  At least it's similar to a fast moving cold and has a 0% fatality rate.

So far as is being reported; remember Albert, our numbers on CDC and WHO releases are notoriously inaccurate. Already in West Africa, we are seeing huge figures as opposed to what was reported. If this "can be very contagious" why are there no reports of adult infections?

It is true that children do have immune systems that are not so seasoned as adults, but what about the elderly. There have got to be a lot of affectionate grandmas and grandads out there holding these kids.  Some of them have compromised immune systems, or naturally poor health due to age or other diseases. Why aren't they getting sick?  Sometimes when the flu is spreading,  they don't even count the cases of adults at all.  As a result there are no numbers of infections or deaths. A death can be attributed to pneumonia, or other health issues and never be tagged and counted as a flu or norovirus case.

http://www.wowt.com/news/headlines/Enterovirus-D68-Enters-Douglas-County-275833951.html

The Douglas County Health Department says they've confirmed the area's first case of the enterovirus D68. It’s been making children sick across much of the country and now appears to be here.

The child involved is less than 1-year-old and was hospitalized with coughing and difficulty breathing. The youngster has since been released.

“This confirms our suspicion that enterovirus D68 is circulating in our community,” said Douglas County Health Director, Dr. Adi Pour. “Enteroviruses are extremely common, and there are more than 100 types.

“It is estimated that 10 to 15 million enterovirus infections happen every year in the United States,” Dr. Pour said. “Just like any illness that goes person to person, there are ways to be protected from EV-D68.”

Symptoms typically include cough, sneezing, a low-grade fever, runny nose and possible body ache. EV-D68 appears to more seriously affect children with asthma or pre-existing respiratory conditions.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/enterovirus-d68-five-children-being-tested-for-virus-at-childrens-hospital-philadelphia/

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed nearly 600 cases of Enterovirus D68. Most victims are children, and the virus is in 43 states, plus Washington, D.C.

At the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, doctors are trying to understand the disease. Five children hospitalized there are being tested for Enterovirus D68. The latest two cases were made public late Monday afternoon, reports CBS News correspondent Vicente Arenas.

comment: the threat from this disease was downplayed by the media as well as the CDC when I first started this thread.

From what I understand, here in Canada some children have tested positive for this enterovirus and had polio like symptoms related to it.  There was a lot in the news about it a few days ago and it seems to have vanished from the media.  Has anyone else heard anything about this relationship?

Always be Prepared!

http://www.dailyrepublic.com/usworld/california-officials-report-32-enterovirus-cases/

SACRAMENTO — California health officials said Friday that they have confirmed 32 cases of a virus that can cause serious respiratory illness — more than double the figure from a week earlier.

However, the state Department of Public Health said there doesn’t appear to be any outbreak of enterovirus D68, which has sickened hundreds and possibly caused several deaths around the country.

Respiratory illness figures in the state are normal for this time of year, the agency said in a statement.

Eight cases of enterovirus D68 were reported in San Diego County, five in Alameda County and four in Los Angeles County, the agency said.

There were three cases reported in Orange County and San Francisco County, two in Riverside County, one each in Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano and Ventura counties, and one each in the cities of Long Beach and Berkeley, the public health department said.

All of the confirmed cases involve children, the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1smSxKq) reported.

The three patients in Orange County are unrelated and “are not linked with any community outbreak of the illness,” according to a statement from the Orange County Health Care Agency.

Reports of enterovirus cases around the country have led to heightened awareness and surveillance for the virus, Dr. Eric Handler, the county’s public health officer, said in the statement.

Enterovirus D68 can cause flu-like symptoms and respiratory problems, sometimes serious. The virus can be spread through coughing, sneezing and contact with contaminated surfaces.

There is no vaccine or specific treatment.

There is an additional case in Santa Cruz which I will get further data on later today.

http://outbreaknewstoday.com/enterovirus-d68-confirmed-in-tennessee-90-of-states-now-have-at-least-one-case-62581/

Tennessee is the latest US state to have a confirmed case of Enterovirus D68, according to an update by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today. Two cases were confirmed by the CDC, the children were from West Tennessee and the other in East Tennessee.

Both were hospitalized for their illnesses, but are now home and doing well.

“As expected, Tennessee has been impacted by enterovirus D68 as have most other states this fall,” said TDH Commissioner John Dreyzehner, MD, MPH. “We have now confirmed two cases, while other samples have tested positive for different, common, seasonal cold viruses. It is also likely other samples will test positive for EV-D68 in the future.

“This is cold and flu season, and simple measures like washing your hands and not touching your face are important ways to help protect against germs like EV-D68 that can’t be prevented with vaccine,” said Dreyzehner. “This is also an excellent time to get your flu shot to protect yourself and people around you from flu.”

As of October 8, 2014, CDC or state public health laboratories have confirmed a total of 664 people from 45 states and the District of Columbia with respiratory illness caused by EV-D68.

The 45 states are Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Many state health departments are currently investigating reported increases in cases of severe respiratory illness in children. This increase could be caused by many different viruses that are common during this time of year. EV-D68 appears to be the predominant type of enterovirus this year and is likely contributing to the increases in severe respiratory illnesses.

Hospitals in Missouri and Illinois were the first to document this increase that was later identified to be caused predominantly by EV-D68 infection.

It is likely that D68 if not already will soon be in all 50 states. This is an epidemic. Whether or not it will become Pandemic could be in the past tense already.

As with at least a dozen serious increases in world wide infection of some serious viruses and bacteria, the health care system is not prepared to deal with it, and unless they are psychc, there is no screen which can detect a patient without symptoms without testing them.

It will be mutation, and one has happened already, which makes these viruses more lethal to adults as well as children.

D68 as reached the area I live in and people are ill. It is a question of whether this begins to impair breathing the muscles where we begin seeing respiratory failure and polio like symptoms.

Focusing on a few cases and blasting that all over the news, ignores thousands of other cases in the general population.

My cousin's little boy (he's 4) spent all day & night at the ER yesterday for cough & wheezing.  He has no history of asthma & is a normally healthy little man.  They gave him an IV, took blood did a chest xray & a breathing treatment or two.  I asked her if anyone had mentioned Enterovirus D68 to her & she said no.  They dx him with viral upper respiratory infection.  They had to rent a nebulizer from a medical equip place to take home.  This kid has never needed that for a cold before.  I bet you anything it's D68.  We are in TN.

Enterovirus is now reported all over United States and is in counties where I live and I may be fighting it off.  The sounds of coughing are up and down our "block", at the stores, and some people are very ill.

http://mv-voice.com/news/2014/10/17/county-reports-more-enterovirus-cases

Unofficially, friends I am in contact with in the South and other locations may have children with this and it sounds fairly serious. As for here in Monterey County - we know there are definitely cases in nearby Santa Clara County.

Four new cases of the enterovirus-D68, a respiratory illness, have been diagnosed in Santa Clara County, bringing the number of cases to five since Oct. 9, a county health spokeswoman said Thursday.

All five of the cases involved children under 18 years old, the group that is most at risk to becoming ill from the virus, with wheezing and difficulty breathing in severe cases, Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System spokeswoman Joy Alexiou said.

The four children who recently caught the virus were admitted to area hospitals but have since been released in good condition, Alexiou said.

The first case of the virus in the county was confirmed on Oct. 9, also affecting a juvenile who left the hospital after the virus ran its course, she said.

The enterovirus-D68, also known at EV-D68, is being reported all over the United States, other parts of the Bay Area and now "is circulating in our community," Alexiou said.

comment: One thing is for certain, this is a nasty bug which seems to keep coming back, can produce serious breathing problems and may continue to mutate. It is now in adults and we need to continue to monitor this closely.

If you are from Arizona and read this forum and know of cases, could you post on this thread. This is the last state I cannot confirm cases in.
