DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A North Texas hospital has a patient in isolation as they evaluate them for potential exposure to the Ebola virus.
Officials with Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas released the following statement Monday night: “Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas has admitted a patient into strict isolation to be evaluated for potential Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) based on the patient’s symptoms and recent travel history. The hospital is following all Centers for Disease Control and Texas Department of Heath recommendations to ensure the safety of patients, hospital staff, volunteers, physicians and visitors. The CDC anticipates preliminary results tomorrow.” It is unclear what specific symptoms the patient has or what the patient’s travel history was. CBS 11 News spoke with Dallas County Health and Human Services Director Zachary Thompson who confirmed the patient had been in an area where the Ebola virus exists. “Looking at the travel history is the first indicator and then the next step is [treatment or non-treatment] once we get lab results,” he said. Thompson definitely felt that there should be a heightened sense of awareness in North Texas, based on what has happened internationally. |

If it does turn out pos, we could expect more to probably pop up worldwide at approximately the same time. One suspected case should put all countries on alert. They don't want to fall behind during an initial outbreak

Star-Telegram.com Ebola unconfirmed, CDC coming to Dallas Posted Tuesday, Sep. 30, 2014 A team from the Centers for Disease Controls is coming to Dallas in case a patient at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital tests positive for Ebola, media partner WFAA reported from the Dallas County Commission meeting Tuesday. Reporter Sebastian Robertson reported that the patient has not yet tested positive, but that a CDC team is mobilizing. The patient, who came to the hospital on his or her own, according to Dallas County Health Director Zachary Thomas, is being kept in strict isolation at the hospital, according to a statement released Monday by the hospital. Thomas said in an interview with WFAA that the patient had traveled to Africa. Dallas-Fort Worth Airport has no direct flights to and from Africa, so if the patient were flying, he or she would have had to make a connection elsewhere. Ebola more than 3,000 people across West Africa and infected a handful of Americans who have traveled to that region. Presbyterian Hospital released a statement Monday saying officials there were following CDC recommendations to keep doctors, staff and patients safe. The National Institutes of Health recently admitted an American doctor exposed to the virus while volunteering in Sierra Leone. Four other patients have been treated at hospitals in Georgia and Nebraska. Star-Telegram reporters Monica Nagy and Andrea Ahles contributed to this report. |

It is almost noon CST, if the CDC is mobilizing and going to Dallas, one would have to assume they already have the results.
It is not like they get test results back and a white coat lab tech goes running out on the street to announce the results...we can assume the first positive stateside case would be immediately followed by a planned press conference |

Not good that the CDC is heading there. That's the first time I've heard of that one. The patient must be showing concerning symptoms, or as pheasant stated, they may already have the results. This one is a little interesting...

Health and Human Services officials told commissioners that they had already begun an investigation to find people who had been in contact with the patient. Director Zachary Thompson said it was not unusual for the department to begin tracing contacts after being notified about a possible contagious disease. County nurse epidemiologists are tracking down the patient's family members, friends and work colleagues, basically anyone who might have been exposed, if the virus is confirmed, he said. If the disease is confirmed, further steps may be taken to isolate those contacts. "I don’t want to say that it was a small sphere, in terms of space, but in terms of where he moved or she moved," Thompson said. "But we’ll talk more in detail later in the day and that will be communicated out to the public." |

This is all reasons why we will have outbreaks here that go beyond just a couple people, when it happens. Two think an isolated case or two is fairly optimistic.

Yeah. Most of the other possibles looked like Ebola and came from Africa but none of this mentioned at all. Including a pre-planned anouncement for later today... Yeah.

Not sounding good.... CDC hopping on a plane to Dallas, already starting contact tracing, and more "detail that will be communicated out to the public" later today. Certainly a different feel than all the other "not Ebola" patients.

Not If but When: Panic will set in if this is a positive confirmation when the folks hear where this patient has been and who he was in contact with. They know a lot more than they are telling us because of the panic issue. They have not a clue what is going to happen when they announce the results if they are positive which based on their reaction they already know..

Star-Telegram The Texas public health lab in Austin is testing a specimen from a Dallas patient for Ebola, and hopes to have results later Tuesday afternoon, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of State Health Services said. Carrie Williams, director of media relations, said in an emailed update, “At this point, all precautions are being taken as if this was an Ebola case.” Erikka Neroes, public information officer for Dallas County, said the county will release the results for the patient at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, whether they are positive or negative. She said she could not confirm that a team from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control is coming to Dallas, but confirmed that a team is mobilizing. Williams said the CDC also is conducting testing for Ebola. The patient came to the hospital on his or her own, according to Dallas County Health Director Zachary Thomas. He said in an interview with media partner WFAA that the patient had traveled to Africa. In the current outbreak — the world’s largest ever, which began in West Africa — Ebola is fatal about 50 percent of the time. It has killed more than 3,000 people. David Magana, spokesman at DFW Airport, said the county, the CDC and other public health agencies look into travel routes, adding, “We take our lead from the health agencies” with respect to any kind of screening. Dallas-Fort Worth Airport has no direct flights to and from Africa, so if the patient were flying, he or she would have had to make a connection elsewhere. Williams’ email says the state and local health departments are coordinating with the CDC. Tarrant County monitoring The Tarrant County Public Health Department is monitoring the situation closely, a spokeswoman said. “In any of these scenarios, we are ears up. We are listening. We are making phone calls to get the best information we can,” said Kelly Hanes, Tarrant County Public Health spokesman. “We are not passively sitting here by any means.” Hanes added that the patient in Dallas is “in the best place they can be, for their safety and our safety as well.” The patient, who has not been identified, is being kept in strict isolation at the hospital, according to a statement released Monday by the hospital. The statement says officials at Texas Presbyterian are following CDC recommendations to keep doctors, staff and patients safe. Ebola has killed more than 3,000 people across West Africa and infected a handful of Americans who have traveled to that region, including Dr. Kent Brantly, who did his residency at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. Brantly, who survived, was doing missionary work in Liberia when he was infected. The National Institutes of Health recently admitted an American doctor exposed to the virus while volunteering in Sierra Leone. Four other patients have been treated at hospitals in Georgia and Nebraska. Star-Telegram reporters Monica Nagy, Susan Schrock and Andrea Ahles contributed to this report. Based on the above comments it appears that the patient arrived via air travel from outside the USA(reading between the lines). Why else would the spokesman for the airport be quoted?

Before they announce the first positive in the USA (if it is positive) they will set up damage control first, send out communications, and prep those who need to know (city-state etc;) so they can appropriately respond to the ensuing media rush.

"home for several days" - might be quite a bit of contact tracing to do.
excerpt From Dallasnews http://www.dallasnews.com/news/metro/20140929-dallas-county-health-officials-cdc-sending-ebola-response-team.ece During a media briefing outside the commissioners meeting, Dr. Christopher Perkins, the health department's medical director, said it was after arriving home from West Africa that the patient started showing symptoms, the point at which Ebola becomes contagious. "We know at this time this person was not symptomatic during travel but became symptomatic once arriving here and being home for several days," Perkins said. "So that decreases the threat that might be to the general population." |

Though I fully accept that this is terrible news, I do not think it is
time to panic quite yet. Even the folks in Dallas probably still have
some more prepping time.
I think the CDC will successfully sit on it this time and probably the next and the next. For goodness sake, Nigeria contained its outbreak and Dallas did not even have a Sawer. BUT as the disease spreads and intensifies in Africa this type of event will become more and more frequent. Eventually it will leap to another country (just like this) and get past the CDC (or its equivalent). Don't panic till then. Be safe folks. Keep the preps going. |

I was going to mention earlier as tests were pending, it dawned on me that no reports whatsoever from WHO, CDC, all media, no news, was coming out of W Africa. Something else had their attention. I would have mentioned that early, but had to eat a tuna melt with some old guy at the bar at lunch. Lucky for us that they're all 3 days ahead.

Lol. I was following my dad in a Walmart handy cart trying to copy paste and post the first news out but got a ticket for texting while driving and waterboy beat me to it by seconds. Yeah I actually did get griped at for texting while maneuvering through a crowded Walmart in an electric cart. My dads cart had a low battery so I got him a spare. |

We still don't know if this guy infected other people or not, but where there is 1 person flying out of Africa with Ebola, there will certainly be more as time passes.
The only way to stop the spread is to stop people from flying out of W. Africa. PERIOD! If they want to keep health care workers flying in and out of there, then they should fly on a designated plane, preferably a military cargo jet. I'm absolutely sick and tired of the apparent stupidity of these people. It would seem that such people who make these decisions to maintain air travel aren't that stupid after all, so the only conclusion you can draw from this is population control. I'm at a total loss to think anything different. |

Elver, I would say the person probably infected a couple others and we're probably dealing with a possible small isolated outbreak. Probably a long ride from family members at home along with the folk in ambulance. |

Sorry I posted this on other forum. At the risk of seeming like a panic merchant I would take with a pinch of salt the testomy of the patient that he was asymptomatic on flight.
Think about this. If someone had known they had been in contact with an Ebola case in West Africa and they had the opportunity to get out to relatives in US, there may be a temptation to run, either presymptomatic or at start of feeling ill. They may put their own health above others safety. Now you are ill ,surrounded by CDC officials asking when symptoms started......are you going to own up that you ran because you were sick....risk becoming a hate figure.....risk your family knowing the reason you came to visit was because you had been in contact with someone who had Ebola. The temptation would be there to lie. I am not saying this patient is, but there is a motive if they did. It is well documented in Liberia and Sierra Leone that patients often walked into routine hospitals and lied about their symptoms, hoping to get treatment there instead of going to Ebola holding centres. Many HCW got infected this way, as they didn't suspect Ebola based on the symptoms the patient was relaying, and only after admission did they begin to suspect the patient hadn' t been telling the whole truth. One way to check is see when flight was booked, was it a long planned journey to see relatives, flights booked over 3 weeks ago etc. However if it was recent or last minute booking, then I would er on side of caution and contact and trace passengers that used toilet, and in seats close by. By just taking word of patient they may leave a possible contamination train to speed away. Strange hearing during the questions saying there was absolutely NO risk to passengers during the flight_ as patient was not symptomatic.....says who. Anyway who am I to tell CDC how to do their job, and my thoughts are with this poor patient. One thing for sure.....THEY CANT GET THIS WRONG |

Hazelpad, from the way the news stories here are presenting this, the person has family both in the U.S and Liberia, it appears to be a long-planned journey, and the various agencies involved in this have tracked down most of the contacts. The persons family is also under watch. Just remember what is on the 1st page of the Hitch Hiker's guide to the Galaxy in big letters: DON'T PANIC! |

This guy developed symptoms on 9/24 & wasn't admitted to the hospital until 9/28. That is 4 or 5 days depending on when he came down with symptoms on the 24th and what time he was admitted to the hospital on the 28th.
(He left Liberia on 9/19, so hopefully, the airplane wasn't contaminated.) |

Also good that he was visitor and not resident which cuts out work contacts, ie imagine they worked at a McDonalds, or was a doctor/dentist, or a hairdresser.

I've read that Ebola can survive on surfaces 7 to 10 days, but I'm not sure that they know this for sure. It seems to be speculation. Does anyone have any credible information about how long it survives on surfaces? |

He took an ambulance to the hospital the second time?
Assuming the relatives have some brains, and do not live under a rock, do you think they would have offered a drive the first time? Or would they have called a cab? |

I'm absolutely positive that this plane is still flying all over the country because nobody is taking this seriously. If they did, then we wouldn't have people flying into the U.S. from W. Africa.
Remember that the CDC said that you have to catch it from bodily fluids? What they neglected to say is that Ebola can stay alive on objects for days. |

They're betting the farm on zero transmission before symptoms. Problem is often the first symptoms are headache and sore throat. Who would know aside from the patient? |

There are 3 major U.S. airlines that carry people out of W. Africa into at least a dozen airports. Delta was the largest carrier, but they said they weren't going to transport anyone after the end of August. The other two are United & I think Continental. Many flights go via Air France; W. Africa, to France, to the U.S. Delta is still a connecting airline. If they don't stop air travel, then it is only a matter of time before we have patient 2, 3, 5, or 1,000! It really is that simple. |

I thought we had solid case evidence that some infections were before symptoms showed up.
And didn't we have discussions on viral load and some other conversations re: shedding? I thought we had come to the basic conclusion that there was a very high probability of some infections happening before symptoms. In other words, the infectious period begins when shedding occurs or when viral load is high enough...regardless of whether or not our body responds via a temp?? |
