oats can be put in water and applied as a paste for wounds or sunburns...

Muskrat -

Same here, have both instant and regular.  If time and cooking fuel are in abundance, original works.  If time or fuel are scarce, instant is quite nice.  I like the 56 pack variety box they sell at costco for $10.

Costco also has buttermilk pancake just-add-water mix, 10 lbs for $4.99 and a 2 pk of 64oz Log Cabin Maple syrup for $5.69.

Oatmeal was big on my list of preps. Have stored several 6 gal. buckets of oats, and also the instant oatmeal packets. Doesn't take much oatmeal to fill the tummy! All kinds of ways to doctor it up, dehydrated apples, raisins, brown sugar, cinnamon, maple syrup, almonds, etc. Easy on the budget too!

I have also put up alot of instant potatoes, and buckets potato dices. Costco has the best Hormel real bacon. I have vacuum sealed dozens of smaller bags of it to add flavor to scrambled egg powder, add some dehydrated red and green peppers, yum.

We have lots of instant and regular oatmeal. We also have several boxes of just add water pancake mix. Still need more pancake syrup.

We also have lots of instant potatoes. I just need to get a vacuum sealer to get all this put up properly. It is one of the next things on my list to purchase.

Don't put off tomorrow what you can PREP today

One thing I noticed in buying oatmeal is that the old fashioned non instant
kind had a longer shelf life. If you soak it overnight, it cooks just as quick. It
is probably more filling, too.

My wife recently "raided" the food stores and found a box of oatmeal with a date stamp of 9/98, opened it up, and it was just fine for her oatmeal cookies, an excellent prep item.  Please note, that I freeze all grain products for several days in the freezer before I put them in storage.

In all the 30 plus years that I've been storing food, I've never lost anything to bugs or vermin.  Some of my 20 year old MRE's had seen better days, but they were still edible.

I was raised on Oat Meal.... love it to this day.  It is in my preps in copious amounts.

It also makes a great "filler" for ground meats.  Plus I have 50 lbs of oat groats.

FYI, shelf life of oatmeal is 4-5 years if stored in airtight containers and treated (oxy absorbers, etc.) to eliminate bugs.

Also to make your own "instant" oatmeal packets.   Plut 1/2 cup of oats in your blender until powdery.   Then add the following to 10 individual ziplock bags:

1/4 cup unpowdered oats

2 Tb powdered oats

1/8 tsp salt

1 tsp sugar (optional)

Microwave:  Add 2/3 cup water or milk and microwave on high for about 1 1/2 min. & stir

Conventional:  Add 1/2 cup boiling water; cook and stir over heat until thickened.

You can also make homemade granola with: 4 C oats, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 cup any type nuts and/or 1 cup dried fruit if available, 1/4 C canola oil, 1/2 C any type sweetener (sugar, syrup, honey) and 1 tsp vanilla baked at 350 for about 20 min stirring once.

Don't forget grits and cornmeal. Masa is very good for flat breads cooked on a griddle over a cook stove too.
For generations we have lived not wisely but too well. Now we must pay.

one of my favorite cookies is the no bake cookies that use cocoa and peanut butter with oatmeal.  I am going to buy another 24 pack of oatmeal and quaker oats.

Quick oats are at the TOP of MY list! Oatmeal kept me from starving on the island as a child :-) They cook in 5 minutes and tast MUCH better than instant. Do the thermos thing if need be. Even longer cooking oats can be done in the thermos overnight.

I'm also starting to expiriment with other grains in the thermos. I have Barley cooking tonight. I did bulger a few days ago and that DEFINATELY worked. I'm hoping brown rice and beans work too.
