Global warming means that millions of people in Yemen and large parts of Africa now face starvation. Several factors are causing temperaturerise especialy in the Arctic. As long as temperatures are below freezing sealevelrise will be slow. When temperature on Greenland etc starts to get above freezing the landice will speed up melting resulting in faster sealevelrise.

We are facing sealevelrise much faster that "the world" can handle. As always the poor pay the price-with their lives. But once this proces gets on its way there is no stopping !

Extreme temperatures create further increased methane emmissions driving up further temperature rise in the Arctic. This will effect land-ice on (a.o.) Greenland resulting in much faster (then expected) sealevel-rise this year.

Increased ocean heat will translate into more extreme storms bringing with record breaking winds extreme waves. Sealevelrise will not go "slowly and smooth"!

A recent study:

Even If humans quickly stop polluting the atmosphere, potentially keeping a global temperature rise to well below 2°C (3.8°F) compared with preindustrial times — a major goal of the Paris climate agreement — seas may still rise by an additional 9 inches to 2 feet this century, the study concluded. That would trigger serious flooding in some areas, and worsen it in others.

Under the worst-case scenario investigated, if pollution continues unabated, and if seas respond to ongoing warming by rising at the fastest rates considered likely, sea levels could rise more than 4 feet this century alone, wiping out coastal infrastructure and driving communities inland.

The problem would be made far worse if the Antarctic or Greenland ice sheets collapse — something that’s difficult to forecast.

(commentDJ-both Antarctic and Greenland/Arctic region landice is breaking up. Wind is eroding the ice, blowing it in the ocean, layers in landice (with more salt) are melting moving landice-layers above into the ocean-it is not only melting that makes land-ice become sea-ice. Extreme methane release from the Arctic region is making things much worse.)

I refuse to give up hope what climate-change is concerned. Eventhough developments are getting beyond the worst case scenarios.

From Guy McPherson:

Madly, as if poisoned by our own culture, we negotiate. The 1.5 C “target” produced by COP-21 in Paris was eclipsed a month after the ink dried on the vaunted agreement. Unlike us, nature does not negotiate. Rather, nature bats last.

On, then, to the simple addition, rounding down in every case (i.e., taking a conservative approach):

1. The most-rapid scenario starts with the current 1 C above baseline and adds about 3 C from loss of global dimming plus 1 degree from moistening of the upper troposphere (to avoid counting the feedbacks twice), plus 11 C from Arctic methane, for a total of 16 C above the 1750 baseline by November 2024. That’ll be inconvenient, as it is much warmer than Earth’s global-average temperature at any time during at least the last 2 billion years (i.e., 2,000,000,000 years). The loss of global dimming is guaranteed by the temperature rise resulting from moistening of the upper troposphere or the rise in atmospheric methane. Civilization will not persist beyond 2 C above baseline, which translates to at least twice that temperature rise within the interior of large continents where grains are grown (thus sustaining civilization)

2. At the slower end of the abrupt-climate-change spectrum is 1 C currently, plus 1 C from loss of global dimming, plus 1 degree from moistening of the upper troposphere, plus 5 C from Arctic methane, for a total of 8 C above the 1750 baseline by November 2034. As above, the loss of global dimming is guaranteed by the temperature rise resulting from moistening of the upper troposphereor the rise in atmospheric methane.

The latter scenario — the “slow” one — takes Earth to a planetary temperature well-suited for dinosaurs, were the transition to take hundreds of thousands of years. It is well beyond the temperature at which Earth has harbored anything resembling Homo sapiens, and it’s quite near the highest planetary temperature during the last 2 billion years. The transition from here to 8 C above baseline will occur more rapidly than any previous known rise in global-average temperature.

A remark on Guy Mc Phersons scenarios-(the most rapid leading to a temperature rise of 16 degrees celsius by november 2024)-he is not mentioning nuclear power plants, the sealevel-rise, (possible link to) earthquakes (certainly when developments go very fast due to extreme methane release from both the Arctic region and due to fracking (mostly in the US-but also happening elsewere).

In my (DJ) opinion-with a lot of older nuclear plants all over the globe we will not have to wait another five years for the next Fukushima(s). It proberbly will be much sooner.

Also if information turns out to be correct Saudi Arabia has nuclear weapons-that it may use against Iran (or Russia in Syria). North Korea, Pakistan, with nuclear weapons-Israel, India (not to mention the "old five" US, France, UK, China and Russia/former Soviet Union-I understand at least the US and the former S.U. could be "missing some nuclear weapons". Pakistan has been selling knowledge-Turkey(Erdogan) could want nuclear weapons.

http://arctic-news.blogspot.nl/2016/02/three-kinds-of-warming-in-arctic.html

Sediments underneath the Arctic Ocean hold vast amounts of methane. Just one part of the Arctic Ocean alone, the East Siberian Arctic Shelf (ESAS, see map below), holds up to 1700 Gt of methane. A sudden release of less than 3% of this amount could add 50 Gt of methane to the atmosphere, and experts have warned for many years that they consider such an amount to be ready for release at any time.
Above image gives a simplified picture of the threat, showing that of a total methane burden in the atmosphere of 5 Gt (it is meanwhile higher), 3 Gt that has been added since the 1750s, and this addition is responsible for almost half of all antropogenic global warming. The amount of carbon stored in hydrates globally was in 1992 estimated to be 10,000 Gt (USGS), while a more recent estimate gives a figure of 63,400 Gt (Klauda & Sandler, 2005). Once more, the scary conclusion is that the East Siberian Arctic Shelf (ESAS) alone holds up to 1700 Gt of methane in the form of methane hydrates and free gas contained in sediments, of which 50 Gt is ready for abrupt release at any time.

The warning signs keep getting stronger. Following a peak methane reading of 3096 ppb on February 20, 2016, a reading of 3010 ppb was recorded in the morning of February 25, 2016, at 586 mb (see image below).

Comment DJ: The Arctic-and other regions-may be releasing methane in such numbers that we have a "very big problem".  If we are not able to get methane to more normal levels soon life can not continue on this planet. It is that simple, it is that bad !

Not only Greenland, but both Arctic and Antarctic-region warming up. We are beyond the point-of-no-return and entering the climate-chaos zone. Panic and depression are now in place as human reaction-we are all on the Titanic. Only a miracle can save is.

Maybe I am getting things wrong, I am not a scientist. The hockeystick-model predicted abrupt climate change when CO2, methane etc escalate. In the Arctic-region methane is not covered by ice and rising up-causing further warming-more melt-more methane etc.

Some recent links:

Scientists are devided in what recent data means. Michael Mann is (to much/very) moderate talking about centuries. Guy Mc Pherson is talking about decades maybe even less, before humans lose Earth as a place to live.

With the recent methane-eruptions and temperature rise in the Arctic maybe developments could even go faster. Volcanic eruptions, solar activity, (many) other factors also will be of influence during this very complex proces. The Arctic without ice will be a fact within a few years-that in itself will have enormous dramatic effects on Greenland-icesheet(s) melt, snow cover in Siberia, Canada, Alaska.

There seems to be a limit to how much warmth the oceans can absorb. (The amount of energy to melt ice into water is the same amount of energy that will bring water to 80 degrees celsius). Warm oceans mean more (extreme) rainfall, stronger storms, higher waves.

With a lot of (old) nuclear powerplants close to the sea or to flooding-risk related rivers another nuclear accident is already very likely within a few years.

https://static.secure.website/wscfus/9167827/2937963/temp-trend-ar5-gavin-to-2016.png

temperaturerise per 10years in timeframe 1880-2012 average=0.095 per 10 years
1901-2012=0.099 per 10 years, 1901-1950=0.098 per 10 years, 1951-2012=0.188, 1979-2012=0.267 per 10 years

temperaturerise per year: 2013=0.09
2014=0.11 2015=0.14 expected 2016=0.24 (Celsius)

calculation temperaturerise since 1880 was 13.2x0.095=1,254 celsius + 0.34=1.594 up to 2016 with possible + 0.24 in 2016=1.834 degrees celsius temperature rise since 1880. (When you go back to 1750 or 1880 the temperature rise is even more.)

You can maybe blame el nino for the extra rise in 2016 but a 30% increase in rice-trend would get a rise of 0.072 above the 0,24 degrees, a 0.312 temperature rise in 2017 ? 0.4056 in 2018? 0.52728 in 2019? (Put together with the increase up to 2017 of 1.834 would get a temperatureincrease by 2020 of (0.312+0.4056+0.52728=1.24488 + 1.834= ) 3(,07888) degrees celsius.

With methane increasing sharply that 3 degrees Celsius temperature rise since 1880 is proberbly optimistic. The rise will not be 30% of the earlier increase.

You might not feel it personally, but Earth’s rotational spin axis—is shifting.

Around the beginning of the 21st century, scientists started noticing that the North rotational pole was moving eastward. Now, scientists from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory believe they have a plausible reason as to why.

Human disturbances

Earths rotational axis is constantly shifting – that’s nothing new. It’s because Earth (and any other planet in existence) isn’t a perfect sphere. It’s imperfect, cover with bumps and chasms. “If you take a chunk of material from some area, you are breaking the symmetry, and the spin axis starts moving,” stated Surendra Adhikari from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

But this most recent shift is different, because Adhikari has linked it to human interference. His findings are published in the journal Science Advances.

There are two main causes: The Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets are melting, and our global water supply is drastically shuffling all around. Thus, human-caused disturbances are literally causing changes in the planet’s poles.

Icegate: Now NSIDC Caught Tampering With Climate Records

You’ve read about the climate fraud committed ‘on an unbelievable scale’ by the shysters at NASA.

You’ve read about how NOAA overestimated US warming by 50 percent.

Now it’s NSIDC’s turn to be caught red-handed fiddling the data and cooking the books.

NSIDC – National Snow and Ice Data Center – is the US government agency which provides the official statistics on such matters as sea ice coverage in the Arctic.

Naturally its research is of paramount importance to the climate alarmists’ narrative that man-made global warming is causing the polar ice caps to melt. At least it was until those ice caps refused to play ball…

Where the alarmists have for years been doomily predicting ice free summers in the Arctic –  according to Al Gore in 2007, 2008 and 2009 it would be gone by 2013 – the truth is that multi-year ice has been staging a recovery since 2009.

age_coverage_time_series_83_15_w_labels2

So what do you do if reality doesn’t suit your narrative? Simple. If you’re NSIDC (and NASA and NOAA…) you just change reality.

NSIDC’s latest attempt to breathe new life into the corpse of the alarmist narrative comprised a press release a few weeks ago claiming that 5+ year old sea ice is at its smallest level on record. To prove it, they’ve produced a new chart that looks like this.

2016-04-22061634

But according to Steven Goddard of the Real Science website this claim needs to be taken with a huge pinch of salt.

Note how, to confuse matters, NSIDC have upended their chart so that 5+ year ice instead of being at the bottom is now at the top. Far worse, though, they’ve gone and deleted all the old style maps from their archive.

At least they thought they had.

But a sharp eyed reader of Goddard’s managed to find one old style map that NSIDC had forgotten to delete. This enabled Goddard to compare the new style map with an old style map for the same week. What he discovered is that NSIDC has been making some dramatic and unexplained adjustments to the record: about half the 5+ year sea ice which should be there, for example, has been mysteriously erased.

Here is a chart Goddard has composed showing the differences.

2016-04-22195454

And here are the two maps, new and old. Note how much larger the 5+ year sea ice coverage is on the old one than on the new one. Note also that there is no scientific reason for this.

latest-1

NSIDC-week41-2015-old-vs-new-1

NSIDC must know that what they are doing is unethical. Why else would they have gone to the trouble not just of deleting their old records – but of trying to block the auto-archivingof that data?

2016-04-22065408

We’re often told by the alarmist establishment that the ‘science is settled’, that there’s a 97 per cent consensus on man-made global warming and that the debate is over. Well, fine. But normally when a case is rock solid the facts are allowed to speak for themselves. Usually, the only time you need to tamper with the evidence is when you’re really desperate and when, you might say, you’re skating on really thin ice…

OHC, I agree with you that when scientists work with "models" and "presentations" the sometimes get it wrong (maybe even at purpose).

Both satelite data (from different agencies, different satelites) come up with the same data:  in the polar regions ice quality is worsening, it is much warmer there then 20 years ago.

The data from http://cci-reanalyzer.org/forecasts/#WORLD-CED is confirmed by stations on the ground. Australia and New Zealand have a longer summer-should have autumn by now. South Asia is seeing extreme heatwaves. Also droughts/floodings are telling a story (about the jet-stream out of its normal route).

Measuring the temperature, cloudcover, amount of rain and wind is what metereologists do. They are not "liarrs and satanists". Just concerned citizens trying to warn people for a danger they see is on the way.

When the temperature of the water rises its ability to contain oxygene decreases. That is not satanic but science. https://robertscribbler.com/2016/04/28/ncar-global-temperature-increase-depletes-oxygen-in-most-ocean-zones-by-the-2030s/

Satori, you are referring to Robert Scribbler as a "Goddard pseudoscientist"? You have a link for that ?

The American Geophysical Union https://sites.agu.org/ had a meeting december 2015 http://fallmeeting.agu.org/2015/. Eric Rignot http://www.faculty.uci.edu/profile.cfm?faculty_id=5467 gave a presentation on the (potential for) sealevelrise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p9uRxX95f4.

Paul Beckwith https://paulbeckwith.net/ is from the University of Ottawa, Guy Mc Pherson from the univ.of Arizona http://guymcpherson.com/.

There are several other climatoligists active on the internet. The story they are telling is a very hard story. They do not agree at all points (Robert Scribbler leaves methane out of the story, Guy Mc Pherson bases his expectations/calculations on methane release). But the essence of what they all are pressing is that climate change is escalating to a degree that it poses a real threat for human live on the short term. (within 20 years, case fatality ratio 100%).

I wish they have it wrong. So please (Satori, OHC, others) if you have a coherent story on a good basis that proves the "alarmists" to be wrong I would love it.

Satelite data and local reports tell a story of increased melt, higher temperatures, accidification of the ocean (linked to CO2 ending up in the ocean), extreme heatwaves food and water crises. Some even put a link to increase of earthquakes/volcanic activity. http://robinwestenra.blogspot.nl/2016/04/how-climate-change-triggers-earthquakes.html.

Again I do not like to hear the story of climate change and the effects it will have. In my idea of what Avian Flu Talk stands for it is facing dangers. Some dangers you can prepare for, other dangers you have to live with. Denial of risks usualy increases the risks, in my opinion.

But I would like to be wrong !

I rely on the Bible for prophecy. Nowhere does the Bible tell us that there will be 100% case fatality on earth or any where else.  The Bible does say that the majority of people alive at the second coming of Christ will be lost and destroyed by the brightness of his Glory and the righteous will be caught up to meet him in the air. Then the earth will be void of human beings.

Josh you put a lot of trust in science, yet you follow Dutchsince who has proven the scientists wrong on the earthquakes and the movement of the tectonic plates. Why do you put so much trust in the science of Global Warming when they us deception, lying and tampering with the facts to make their case for global warming? remember Al Gore statements about things that were to have happened by now that have not.

I trust the word of the creator not the created.

OHC, Al Gore isa politician, not a scientist. Science is not united as a world vision. I believe in ratio. In my opinion Dutchsinse is a pioneer, taking an unorthodox look at things. Science has become a way of "tunnel-vision".

All individuals have their own responsibility (for their lives, for each other-I think the bible gives questions we all have to find answers to in our live).

In my opinion-based on the limited knowledge I have-climate change is the most urgent problem we face. If this "change" goes "exponential" our future could be very limited. I find comfort in knowing that I do not know enough about many things to draw farreaching conclusions.

There are people who think that the climate-debate can be used for a totalitarian world government. They may be correct-but is there a better alternative to get out of the problem ? As individuals people can make their own choices to limit the power of governments and big companies.

The 2008 banking-credit crisis "had to be solved by creating more debts". This is kicking the can down the road-not solving the basic problems. (No company should be "to big to fail", when politics claim that companies are "to big to fail"politicians give unlimited power to greed. )

If there is a "God" I would see His work in the creative proces, in nature. Scientists are humans, with their weaknesses. Science is a proces of trying to understand "the creation (and therefor- in your terms OHC- maybe science is a way to find the "creator". Religion and science do not have to exclude eachother.)

For me the question of the "worst case scenarios" of climate change covers the basic questions of life itself; what do people live for ? How to look at death ? In the end science can not answer those questions, a"sort of "belief" (not nescesary in "a God" but maybe in "Good" (respect, knowledge, willing to face "creation") is all we have.

Satori, what I see in the news on climate change is very alarming. The way temperatures increase, the supposed build-in temperature rise of 4C (short term) to 6C (longer term) based at CO2 (if I find the link i will edit/add it http://takvera.blogspot.nl/2012/11/climate-meltdown-global-warming-heading.html) is  shocking.

Developments with large wildfires, famine, extreme heatwaves, drought, extreme rain etc. are so many I stop putting links. I even sometimes stop reading them-I do not want to get totally depressed.

The magnitude of events on their way, their meaning, is to big to fully comprehend. With nuclear installations all over the world-that somehow will get effected-life on this planet looks to be in very high risk.

But the main media are blaming it on "el Nino". You do not solve problems by denial, that goes for the economy, the climate, or any other problem. Usualy you end up in a situation far worse.

With Clinton being mentioned as giving her approval for sending sarin-gas from Libya to the "Al-Qaeda freedom fighters in Syria" http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-05-01/seymour-hersh-says-hillary-approved-sending-libyas-sarin-syrian-rebels you have a "fine choice in future presidents".

For me voting always was "negative selection"; which of the candidates is the lesser evil. If I was forced to choose between Mrs.C or Mr.T I proberbly would go for Mr.T. But they both are an insult to democracy.

On climate-change. If things realy are as bad as they seem, changes going exponential, explosive climate change-deniers can keep telling there is no climate change while sealevels are rising fast, crop-faillure, foodcrisis, watercrises, etc.

The Koch-brothers, Bush-family etc. (Royal Dutch Shell with most of the shares in royal Dutch and UK family possession) can keep claiming that the reality is not there, some realities you can not hide.

Because shareholders of Shell are not sattisfied with the plans of "Royal Dutch Shell"(60% Dutch/40% UK according to some estimates/bookkeeping, not that long ago the biggest company in the world) to keep investing in oil and gas (Shell took over British Gas is active in Nigeria-Niger Delta, Tar sands-Alberta Canada (although at the moment due to wildfires they had to stop) Alaska. In the Netherlands they drew attention because Shell did not want to compensate fracking damages in the north of the Netherlands (some members of parlemant kicked Shell representitives out of their room !).

Because shareholders want Shell to go "green" they have started https://www.follow-this.org/en/#missie. People can buy shares and try to convice Shell to "go green".

The Dutch and British royal families are believed to have a large portion of the Shell-shares. (Dutch royals proberbly up to 25% via all kind of constructions to keep things secret. )

Since politicians "follow the money/"donations for their parties" it may be a good thing when finally some large energy-companies start taking some responsibilities. (Even if it is much to little much to late.)

http://robinwestenra.blogspot.nl/2016/05/330000-lightning-strikes-hit-europe-in.html and https://robertscribbler.com/2016/05/29/fire-in-the-sky-more-than-330000-lightning-strikes-hit-europe-in-just-eight-hours/

Parts of Europe did see flooding, extreme rainfall. But as far as I know the US did have even worse weather. At least no tornadoś, tropical depressions/hurricanes here yet.

In the pacific several islands have gone due to climatechange. Some politicians deny climatechange and refuse refuge for people who did loose their place of birth as the outcome of the decisions made by an elite. http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/2016/05/28/watching-worlds-sink-witnessing-climate-change-in-the-pacific/.

Thanks, Dutch Josh!  It does not look encouraging from Stateside.

Don't worry, Trump will take care of it.  Or Hillary.  Take your pick.

I think I'll vote for Gary Johnson, legal pot for everyone!!  Thumbs Up

You crack me up, Chuck

I'm at the point where I'm pretty much resigned to changes happening whether we do something about it or not. We won't get a handle on CO2 emissions anytime soon despite all the talk, promises, accords and rhetoric, but it's the huge amounts of methane we're potentially unlocking that worry me more than anything. If - as many believe - we've passed the tipping point, all we can do is try and adapt both individually and as a species. Interesting times ahead.

Good story (terrible presentation) from Paul Beckwith 2015; melt in Greenland, Antarctica doubling every 5 years means sealevelrise of 7 metres by 2070. That was in 2015, CO2, methane is going up fast, means temperatures going up fast, more melt, flooding, etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-gcu4IMXmE.

One of the reactions below the video; Whirled Publishing, links nuclear facilities with climate change. Of course Paul Beckwith is correct in saying that sealevel-rise will not follow the IPCC linear models but wil come in hockwaves; pieces of Antarctica landice sliding into the sea, a hurricane bringing far above freezing temperatures to Greenland, means sealevelrise in a short timeframe could be centimetres (within a few months).

CRS, DrPH, jacksdad, "interesting times" is "an understatement". With over 50 million people facing starvation in Africa, up to 4000 refugees per day crossing the sea from Libya to Italy (+700 people killed in a week), climate change is already a horrorstory for many fellow humans.

We as humans have made ourselves an endangered species.

Whoever becomes president of the US will have to deal with the consequences of climate change, the time for discussion is gone. In my view Trump may be the one who can make decisions fast without going into long studies and discussions. Bernie Sanders has good points but would have been a good president 25 years ago.

On the other hand I do not expect solutions from those who caused the problems. We as individuels can say no to fossil fuels, we can say no to wars over oil and gas. We can stop the madness of lots of people poor and starving with a very rich elite getting richer. The time for (international) change is now !

I did choose not to discuss the dramatic outlook of climate change widely. I am trying to keep a balance between living here now and what the future will bring (water vapor may be the main green house gas that can erupt in weeks, not years). But I have decided to discuss this issue "more widely
(without getting insane).
