So more "push" towards Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey (and Russia). -Korea-the unificationdream is far from over. South Korea wants to send a delegation to North Korea for (more) talks. Russia and China proberbly very involved. The US seems to keep repeating itself-NK has to give up its nukes before any talks with the US. (Even the EU wants the US to think of something better). All-in-all; the US by trade-wars (sanctions are a part of it) is getting isolated. On some issues the US may get some support (France and UK want to keep some influence in the Middle East). The US foreign policy is getting less support around the globe. DJ-The US "problem" is "wild-capitalism" in wich companies tell the government what to do. Inside the US is becoming almost a police state, outside the US only thinks in conflict. That does not work well !

DJ-The picture is very grim in my opinion. The US did attack Russian forces several time in Syria, is sending more weapons to Ukraine, making threats against North Korea, Iran, Venezuela. Also the US may be playing some sort of role (sabotage ?) in the downing of Russian civilian aircraft. The US is against Nordstream, Turkstream etc-bringing Russian oil and gas to Europe. The US want energy to remain linked to the US-dollar. (DJ-I can understand that-without that link the US$ is getting maybe just 30% of the present "value") Also the US is pushing for other trade-wars (to Make America Great Again-destroy (all) other countries ???). In the 17th century the Netherlands for a short while "ruled the world"-but we did loose Nieuw Holland (now New York, but also Australia once had that name-the Dutch navigators did discover Australia but we did not put any people there), Dutch Brazil (Recife, once Mauritsstad), Singapore, Decima (near Nagasaki-the Dutch were the only westerners doing trade with parts of Japan) at the end also South Africa (Suid Afrika) and in 1949 had to say goodbye to the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). Still at present the Netherlands has the 17th economy in the world, Dutch as a language is in the top 40 of most spoken languages. After the Dutch the British could claim to "rule the world", most of Africa, South Asia and some countries in the America's fell under the British crown. In the first half of the 20th century that changed-after 1945 the US became the most dominant power. Both the Dutch and the British tried to hang on to their dominant role. The Dutch can blame Napoleon, the British hitler-for the end of their "power"-partly. An other part of course is that nobody can be on top forever. Both the Netherlands and the UK did not become third world countries with the end of empire. The US seems to hang on to the illusion of being the only superpower. In military might one could say that the Russian-China cooperation already ended that status. Also in economy the US can not stop loosing their top-position. In my opinion history shows that the military way to try to stop being "#1" is not working. It would be wiser when the US did invest in good infrastructure, healthcare, education and housing instead of spending "zillions" on war and weapons. Iran now is-in practice part of the Russia-China block. China wants to move trade with Europe via Iran, Pakistan, Turkey-Russia is happy to also have access to the Indian Ocean via the Caspian Sea and Iran (even plans to build a channel connecting the Caspian Sea with the Indian Ocean via West Iran). Attempts to create uprisings by western/Gulf State agencies have had very limited effect-maybe brought even more support for the Tehran-regime. The present Iran government is willing to listen to public demands on food-prices, even womens rights. Also playing on minorities, Kurds, Turkmen, Azeri's, Baluchi etc. will have limited effect. People did see what happened in Iraq, Libya, Syria-they blame the US, Israel , west and Gulf States for that. DJ-Looking at Iraq, Libya, they did have brutal dictators but after western action nobody will claim they are better of now. Looking at how woman were able to dress in Afghanistan (or Iran-for that matter) in the 70's gives the impression of liberties lost. Russia, China, North Korea (Pakistan, Turkey) DJ-Some in the US, UK etc. are thinking of starting a war with these countries. Just like a war with Iran the costs would be that extreme all other ways-even accepting the status quo, may be better. US reasons for war could be defending the US-petro-dollar, but even Saudi Arabia accepted the petro-yuan in deals with China. Also the idea of getting most of the oil and gas under US control-with renewable energy growing fast-proberbly keeps a lot of US decision-makers from going much further in making war-plans with those countries. The US wants to claim to be the only super-power. Russia and China may give the US room to claim so. But it could end up like somebody telling his "boss" I call you my boss when you do what I tell you what to do.

The Kurds are not happy to let pro-Assad forces into Kurdish held area's but when they have to make a choice between Turkish forces or pro-Assad forces they (mostly) prefer pro-Assad forces. The US (and Israel-buyer of SDF/East Syria oil) does want to keep income of East Syria oil and gas from the Damascus government. In my opinion the risk for a US-Russia/Iran (Hezbollah, Afghan, Pakistan, Iraq shia-forces) is very real. Most likely the US is looking for support for "further actions" in Syria, Korea, Ukraine.

I am especially alarmed that Russian mercenaries have attacked US troop in Syria: Perspective from the Russian mercenaries, who took heavy losses from the US counter-attack: Putin is attempting to re-created the old Soviet Union and is following their methodologies. I had hoped for better during the Gorbachev and Yeltsin years, but those are far behind us now.

DJ-Just like Turkey is more likely to leave NATO than NATO putting Turkey out-Turkey is much to strategic, bordering Iran, Syria, Black Sea, second largest army (after US)-a T-exit-Turkish exit out of NATO-would be even worse (for NATO) than the BR-exit is for the EU.
Also Syrian forces getting out of Afrin-NW Syria-is very unlikely. Syria does see Afrin as part of Syria-Turkey is the invader. Although Syrian-Kurdish talks did not bring Kurdish forces under Syrian (Assad) control-the YPG-Kurds giving access to pro-Assad forces is much to valuable for Damascus. When pro-Assad forces show themselves as "good friends of the Syrian Kurds"-pro-Assad forces may show up (maybe just for a short term, as advisor, giving aid etc.) in other YPG-held area's. DJ Some remarks: -Since there are over 30 milion Kurds Kurds can be found on all sides in this conflict. A few Kurds joint IS, quite a lot of them might be in pro-Assad forces. (Also forces from Iraq, Iran-even Russia could include Kurds). -In the Syria conflict Kurds and pro-Assad forces most of the time did not fight eachother, but did fight with IS, "moderate western backed jihadi-terrorists". The Kurds claim they had to organize themselves in defense against IS. (Kurds and muslim-extremists do not mix. Kurds have several religions, christian,(Yezidi) to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoroastrianism) -Syria itself had a small Kurdish minority. Since the Kurds see "Kurdistan" as their country a lot of the Kurds in Syria may not come from Syria but are defending Kurdistan. The "western main-stream-media" are still producing the "bad-Assad/bad-Russia-story" and ignoring who paid IS, other terrorist groups/"moderate rebels". It is very difficult-so far-to get a clear view of what is going on in several parts in/on Syria at this moment. Both for fighting and for talking. Most likely Russia and Iran are having talks with both Turkey and Syria to avoid a Turkish-Syrian war. Russia is selling-on credit-S400 missiles to Turkey, did invest in Turk-stream gasline. Russia does have the exploration-rights for Syrian oil and gas. Both Iran and Russia need Turkey to limit the US and Israel. Turkey now moving to US/NATO would end Russia's/Iran's dream of being in control of the Middle East-would also damage Putin's plans for his march-re-election. Erdogan has limited room to move. The US wants to get rid of him. The EU is-at this moment-not very interested in a Turkey membership. (Even if it would bring Turkey back to the west-political climate in the EU does not allow a Turkish EU membership). Russia still has to deliver the S-400, and a oil/gas pipeline is under construction and can be shut of. Iran and Turkey both have a large Kurdish community-a conflict with Iran would make Turkish internal problem with the Kurds even larger. DJ-I expect a sort of ceasefire in Afrin. Turkey did gain a lot of land the last few days. The YPG-Kurds in Afrin may have been close to collapse and encirclement. Turkey now has a good position for talks (with Russia-via them with Assad. (DJ-Jordan has better relations with Assad then Turkey !) Russia does want the Syrian-Kurds under Assad/Syria control. The US (France, Israel, others) may start major action when the rebels release gas/chemical weapons and "the west"blaimes Assad for it (again). The US is in several Asian countries to put pressure on Russia and China. To have an excuse for being in the region the US used/created "terrorists". When you look at the past 5 years-from Philipines, Turkey, Pakistan now even effecting South Korea, Israel, Saudi Arabia Asian countries expect better treatment from the US. You can not start a tradewar with South Korea and expect South Korea to join the war-of-words against Russia, China and North Korea at the same time. Israel has a large minority with Russian background (and familycontacts) Israel is not waiting for US (proxy) attacks on Russians in Syria, many Israeli's know they need better relations in their region (and hope Russia may be helpfull). Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Afghanistan welcome Russian and Chinese investments-better traderelations with the EU. The US-led coalition already claimed that it had foiled an attack of the Iranian-backed forces and the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) on the SDF-held CONICO gas facility in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside on February 7. However, new reports suggested that Iran and the SAA are currently massing bigger forces near key oil and gas facilities in the eastern and southern Deir Ezzor countryside. It’s unclear if the SAA and its allies, including Iran, will launch another attack towards the SDF-held oil and gas fields in Deir Ezzor governorate. Syrian pro-government activists believe that the SAA and its allies will have to impose a no-fly zone over the fields, if they want their second attempt to be successful.
