More people I know have come down with a new Norovirus type Flu and are very ill. It is unfortunate that CDC will stop giving us weekly reports and the only way to track this is for those like myself to do so. Medclinician |

You need to be taking silver and zinc.......a good place to get these are from a place called
CR Supplements. They are ionic and are easily taken. At least check it out. |

Jacksdad - None of the people I know as well as myself have gotten over this flu. It is possible a relative of one near and dear to me died from it last week. Cannot shake the cough even with mega-doses of C - and I was able to best h5n1 and Swine Flu which nearly killed me and my son - but not this one. It is still widespread in New York and when I called my doctor they want me to come in. The triage nurse said there is something "going around" and it is quite possible this is one of the most poorly reported outbreaks of whatever it is in history. It simply does not go away and keeps coming back. We near a time when Super-bugs are bringing us to a post-antibiotic era. As we near the end of May, correct me if I am wrong, they will stop putting out weekly reports while the flu is STILL widespread in New York and Puerto Rico. What is this? Why can they not put down a widespread outbreak in New York after 6 months of infection? Are we looking at bugs like Norovirus that never go away and permanently infect a person? We were having the same problem with Ebola where people were still carrying it a year after they were discharged from the hospital and still contagious. Could this be the last flu report CDC is going to give us until next October? Let's hope not. Notice it is still regional in most of New England and Local around the Great Lakes and Sporadic all over most of the U.S. How accurate are these numbers? Medclinician CWN JB |

Finally got over whatever I had - and got sick again yesterday. Went to work feeling fine, and within an hour I was sneezing with a runny nose that just wouldn't quit. I figured it was an allergy until my temp hit 100. Still got the sniffles and feeling blah, but thankfully the fever has gone away. What the heck?

Have you both considered a Flu that you never get over? It may not take you out for a very long time, but it may never really go away. When reading through some of the bioweapon material, there were several viruses that were ruled out as being useful. Types of the Flu over years could really ruin the workforce and the infrastructure. No one - at least very few but me have suggested how dangerous this could be. Some of the enemies, especially those who do not care about remaining holed up for 6 years before attacking might find this highly effective. What is the follow up reporting for CDC on people who have the Flu and then recover? We have patients with Ebola who one year later start showing symptoms all over again. This is outside the box thinking and there is no Norovirus season anymore. It is year-round. So if they stop counting cases in May - does it go away until they start in October? Not last year. In treating Flu it is simply useless to treat symptoms. Most of these drugs have a rebound especially steroids. Antihistamines, cough syrup, aspirin, Tylenol... this won't help. If the strain is still sensitive you need an anti-viral or a real boost to your immune system. However a Cytokine storm can kill you. The answer to the Flu besides vaccination is a cure. The word chronic is like a medical euphemism - like the "loved one" for the dead. Just because something is chronic, doesn't mean it won't take someone out. It can. Appreciate you comments on the thread. Medclinician |

The Flu is still widespread in the New England area and several other states. From numerous reports this is a bad flu and can come back several times. Pretty soon they won't even be reporting it anymore and we will have no idea how bad it is. This happened last year. How accurate are these numbers. One thing is for certain, it is from a very limited number of samples and still many are severely ill from this and have not recovered. Medclinician |

My daughter uses Qvar. It was like a miracle drug for her. Turned her right around when she was sick for pretty much a year straight. That was 2012. I tried to wean her off it last year, but she ended up getting walking pneumonia twice within about 6 months of each other. She hasn't used her albuterol in 4 years. She's got a little cold right now but very mild.
Hope you girls feel better soon!

I used to use Qvar, but it caused back aches something fierce. Now just using Albuterol. Sinus and jaw pain have mostly subsided, but still congested.

You know Med, now I'm wondering if I didn't have a mild case of the flu several weeks ago and it's just hanging on, they never did and actual flu test on me and I did have the vaccine, so I would have a milder case. I have been craving juice and salty foods, which I NEVER eat salt, I don't add it to food, I don't eat salty foods, but I have been eating a lot of it lately. And juice, grapefruit juice, apple juice, orange juice, normally I eat a lot of fresh fruit and not juice, but all I want is juice and salty foods.

Know how you feel, Penham. I am still fighting this guy and the cough part. Can't shake the cough. I have resorted to raw juices and my Magic Bullet Blender and a lot of C. What is rough is for those who have other health issues which makes it a lot tougher to fight the Flu. Med |

I got inhalers today also, Albuterol and Atrovent, the Atrovent is a rescue steroid inhaler and is the best thing ever. It works better than the Albuterol/steroid breathing treatments I take at home. So I always take those when they offer them to me, actually I always take any prescription when they offer it to me unless it's in my allergy list.

No, no~ It's totally fine. I was considering making it a separate post, but wasn't sure. I have been extremely congested lately, to the point of needing my inhaler, and my sinuses are so inflamed. Mostly the left sinus too.

I am still feeling like crap, back to the dr. again this morning, they said it's my asthma this time. Gave me a steroid shot and oral steroids for 9 days. I hate not being able to breathe...... |

Comparing this graph for this year against other years it seems that the effects of the flu season are being felt much later this year than in previous years. This year's peak effect is after flu deaths had trailed off in the previous two years. But it overall fatalities of children are still well down.

Better late than never - you were not hearing about this on the mainstream media and in few places on the net besides here...
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-03-11/flu-hits-new-york-hard-as-delayed-outbreak-lays-americans-low The annual influenza season, which typically peaks between December and February, has picked up strength across the U.S. and is widespread now in 37 states, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report. The virus is highly active in the south and west -- normally seen early in the season -- and it also hitting hard in New York and New Jersey. comment: It is common in reporting the Flu situation in the U.S. to hear "yes it was a lot worse before but now it's better." When I covered the Pandemic in 2009 New York was highly infected - at one time there were reports of over 500,000 cases. Still on many links this was never put out there and in some cases only dozens of infections were formally declared when there were thousands. People are still sick and often the current flu comes back. People simply do not have the health care they once did nor the money sometimes to go to ER. Also, in triage, unless they are burning up with fever they are told to stay home and wait - sip. Still getting reports from New York and other places of people coming down with the Flu and pretty ill. My thanks to the users and guests here posting their problems with the flu and recovery. It is still not over and more cases are coming of infections of B strains which may mean the vaccine is less effective in some areas. Medclinician |

Influenza Update
Connecticut Department of Public Health – Posted 4/13/2016 Page 1 of 6 Influenza Season, Update for Week 14* (Week ending Saturday, 04/09/2016) Key Points Flu activity has now peaked in Connecticut and in most of the country; it is currently classified geographically in Connecticut as widespread**. The predominant influenza viruses identified this season are Type A, although an increasing number of Type B flu viruses are continuing to be reported. The predominant Type A isolates subtyped have been 2009 H1N1. Statewide emergency department visits attributed to the “fever/flu syndrome” had reached 9.6% and it is currently at 6.3% statewide; 5% is generally considered the minimum threshold when there are elevated influenza-associated ED visits http://www.ct.gov/dph/cwp/view.asp?a=3136&q=410788 This was a hard find. Flu activity is still spiking in some areas in the United States and remains widespread in both California and New York. Medclinician |

I am on my 3rd day of my antibiotics and just today starting to feel a bit better. I woke up in the middle of the night two or three times drenched in sweat and had to change clothes. I have not had to take a breathing treatment today so far, but probably will take one anyway before bedtime just as a precaution. My voice is sounding more normal and I am not feeling quite as tired, of course I'm not at work either, lol, since it's the weekend.....

Penham - I think that is one of the worst thing about some of these flu strains. That the infection comes back. This may be a very dangerous flu and some of my relatives and friends can't seem to get over it. One thing is for sure. It is miserable. Still waiting for it to go away and not come back. I'm on my 3rd round of upper respiratory something myself. Went to the ENT today and she gave me a script for a Z-pack and said it sounded like I had the beginnings of bronchitis, that if I felt worse in the next few days go ahead and start it, if not just keep it on hand. But this is the 3rd time in the past 6 weeks, I was on a Z-pack and steroids, then it went away, came back, then on Levaquin and steroids, it went away and now it's coming back again. I have terrible allergies right now too.

Over the past week I've worked with two 21 year old gals at the plaza who have this strep with coughing and congestion. They both had ear involvement and the one had an infection in her mouth. Both have been sick 4-5 weeks. They have had no contact with each other and the one in fact evidently caught hers in Italy. Not fun, as they are both in prime of life, got pretty sick and are having a hard time shaking it, no doubt at least partially due to overwork with college/nursing school and jobs.

now my boss lady is out with it and she's never out sick! Not sure if she has the same symptoms I had but it sounds like hers is the cold I had and not the strep throat/tonsilitis. My parents are now coming down with something and I do hope and pray it's just a mild annoying cold at worst.

I'm laid low with something respiratory right now - second time in six weeks, but this one had a fever. The usual cough and sniffles, but also weird symptoms like my hands going white and losing all feeling, vision changes and severe dizziness on standing. Called in sick last night and went to bed with a fever of 102.2, but thankfully it broke during the night and I'm down to 98.0 and feeling a lot better. Hopefully a few more days of rest and lots of fluids will see me back to work. Not a fun weekend

According to this week’s FluView report, flu activity continues to
decrease, but is still elevated overall nationally in the United States.
Influenza-like-illness (ILI) may have peaked nationally for this season
and be winding down, but there are still 25 states reporting widespread
activity at this time
comment: Flu is still widespread or regional in most of the United States. Widespread flu activity was reported by Puerto Rico and 25 states (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming) Both California and New York continue to have widespread Flu. The concern here is that people with the Flu often have relapses or come down with symptoms again. This is unlikely to show up on the maps or counts and others may have it and the relapses for months. Medclinician |

It is good you are getting over the Strept throat but there is a much more serious problem which I have been trying to address on this thread of a flu which is spreading across the U.S. Someone near and dear to me has it and may die. This will be the second person I have lost - one in Chicago to the Swine Flu in 2013. I have been trying here to track a virus which is poorly documented, the CDC is not coming out with accurate reports of and is still pretty bad. I still am sick and cannot get this out of my lungs. I have tried C and a young boy who I know of went to ER and they have given him 3 antibiotics and other treatment and still it won't quit. It hits older people and children much worse. There is a chest component like you have mentioned to this and I was up all night coughing. What I have is not Strept nor was it diagnosed in the families or friends who simply cannot get over this. One day at a time. Medclinician |

Glad you are feeling better nc_girl.
My BIL ended back at the ER on Tuesday night. I'm just hearing about it for the first time tonight, nobody tells me anything around here, lol. Anyway... he is having sleep apnea waking up can't breath then feeling panic because he can't breath. The cardiologist thinks that might be where the arrhythmia is coming from. He is doing a sleep study.

well, I had gall bladder surgery and ended up with 'something' one week later that I think I got from ppl at church. It had a sore throat (which turned out to be strep) that is brutal!!! and then had a sinus and chest component where your head is stopped up and you cough up alot of green phelgm. Coughing mostly at night and early morning when you're laying down.
Took two weeks to be rid of except for the strep and I finally went to urgent care and got anti-biotics. It's now starting to feel better. Not sure if it was the flu because I never got a fever with it. But it came on fast and stayed a full two weeks and the strep stayed the whole time. also kept me hoarse and lost my voice several times. This stuff is really going around here in NC. |

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) Kentucky health officials say that the flu is continuing to rage across the state and is expected to continue to be a problem well into next month. The Kentucky Department for Public Health sent out a health alert Wednesday, announcing flu activity in the state to be "widespread" for the ninth consecutive week, with flu-like activity or outbreaks having been reported in at least half of the state's regions. http://kwqc.com/2016/03/30/flu-is-still-widespread-in-iowa/ Spring may be in full swing now, but so is flu season. Doctors are warning about another surge of flu cases going on right here in the Quad Cities. comment: It's not over and once again many people I know have it and some are not getting any better. Thank you so much, Michele for posting this. I have been hearing something like this from many people. It lasts 3 weeks. It is very intense and the cough takes longer to go away. The problem with the official reports is that the numbers are only calculated from a very small, hand picked group while many cases, especially most people who do not go to the doctor or cannot afford to, are not counted. The good news, if there can be when you are miserable is that not many people are dying from this, but the very young, the elderly and people with other medical issues this can hit a lot harder. Great to hear you are feeling better and I think I am pulling out of whatever this was, but still have the cough. Medclinician |

Am in week three of this -and this is first time in years I've been so sick. It spread through family within days of my getting it. [ Mar 19- on] I'd been fighting reactions from the ag crops being burned [this is typical for this area prepping for planting in spring, and thought that was all it was. But I KNOW I had a pneumonia like illness and was very wary when it went so fast into my sinuses and lungs. Had terrible "asthma attack like distress and 'whistling' aveoli and gurgling with each breath! Also checked out CDC "reports" and found them lacking and under reporting so I appreciate this forum! OTC cough n cough meds minimized rib hurting coughing spasms but Treating with doxcycline now. And plenty of hibiscus tea [full of acerola vitamin c!] Hubby says it reminds him of what they called the "Iraq hack" which hit every FOB in the spring from 2005-2009. I've also heard that air quality samples have been analyzed from around the country and they have found three strains of viruses all causing upper resp illnesses and even cardiac arrest. There s speculation this 'cocktail' is somehow a result of geo engineering spraying. Definitely seeing the 3-4 week duration typical -with a cough remaining afterwards.

As far as I know they aren't doing anything for him. He's doing ok. I know he took the Tamiflu while he was in there & they may have sent him home with some, I'm not sure how many days are prescribed. And told him to follow up with a cardiologist. He doesn't have health insurance so I think that's why they cut him loose. But he is getting along ok. He is not back to work yet though, he works for a small local fencing company. But he is back at his own house, making his own meals & such so he's doing a lot better. My husband told him he really did need to make that appointment with the cardiologist, so we are trying to encourage him to do it, but he says he feels fine. Good grief, stubborn.
EDIT: He's on antibiotics too & either an inhaler or oral steroids.

The Flu is not over yet in the U.S. Some people are getting it once more and it is hard to say if these 2nd and 3rd times of it coming back are reflected in the CDC map or figures. It is still widespread in California and New York and either widespread or regional in most of the U.S.
The geographic spread of influenza in Guam, Puerto Rico and 29 states was reported as widespread; 18 states reported regional activity; the District of Columbia and two states reported local activity; one state reported sporadic activity; and the U.S. Virgin Islands did not report. Never in the U.S. since Flu reporting began have we had such little data on many actual cases, infections are deaths there are. Medclinician |

Hey all. My BIL went home this evening. He was still pretty sick so he is trying to take it easy at his house. My MIL said he looked better, had color back in his face & actually has the energy to get to the bathroom & back. They want him to follow up with a cardiologist as I think there was still some abnormalities there but they did not explain to him exactly what or why. He tried to tell them, "Look, I had a perfectly functioning heart before I came here."
I think he was nervous to go home & be alone but also hated being there. His main symptoms he said that forced him to the ER were chest tightness & pain & he could not breath. Besides the normal flu symptoms. And he said it wasn't like the kind of tightness you might get from a chest cough. |

There is are still flu outbreaks across many parts of America. I was on the phone with someone last night in the South where flu has nearly shut down a clinic and infected most of the people coming there for treatment.
We often subjected to CDC reports - well it was a lot worse last week without ever being told "This is week it is pretty bad." That is the way it was during the Pandemic when New York had hundreds of thousands of cases and reported only less than 5% of them. Three months later they finally said - well yes - there were a lot more. People who get one of several strains of flu and Norovirus going around aren't "a little sick" they are very sick - especially those who are older or very young and have other medical problems. I talked to DrJ a few times and he had a bug which took him 3-6 weeks to get over at all and I have had something for a month or more. It drops deep in the lungs, is like a nasty cold, and for some causes severe nausea and vomiting. Some people are sick of being sick. Tamiflu is only really effective if given 72 hours from the onset of the flu. Most of the times if you miss that window, it will not do anything about the symptoms and only in some cases lessens the impact of the disease but doesn't cure it. I do not want to lose another person dear to me to the flu. I already lost one in Chicago in 2013 to Swine Flu. As the years have gone by they just don't report cases or even human deaths from the Flu as they did. There are literally no reporting from sites that is current and we must wait for weeks to get information on outbreaks if ever. to be continued... Medclinician |

My hubby just told me they've been giving him Tamiflu in the hospital. I know it was over the 48 hrs even before he went to the ER, but I guess they decided it couldn't hurt.
EDIT: I misunderstood my husband... He (my BIL) did NOT get a flu shot. |

Yes he is. Thanks for asking. He got moved to a regular room today. I'm not sure if he's still having the arrhythmia any more or not. Since today was the first he's had access to a phone I was hoping to talk to him personally & get better info but I was gone all day & didn't get a chance to speak to him. I do know that visitors are limited to 16 & older & full gown plus mask are required. I was a little surprised by that but I guess that's normal protocol for H1N1 ??
I am hoping he has his cell phone back & I can just text him tomorrow. I'm not going to visit, my 11 yr old is off school for Spring Break & has a history of asthma so I'm not going to risk it. |

I will. He's not a sick kind of person at all. I don't think he's ever had the flu before in his whole life. They had him 24 hours almost before finally telling us today it was H1N1 & that was after we asked why he'd been moved to ICU. They said because he developed heart arrhythmia and we were like, What?! Why... and they said it could be the virus. And that's when they said it's the flu. Understand most of this info is coming from my MIL and she's a nervous wreck type & doesn't understand Dr. speak but I finally stepped in & got as many answers as I could to try & make more sense of things. They may have told her from the very beginning that it was flu (she's the one that took him to the ER yesterday) but it could have just went over her head.
He's a single dad just 41 years old. His wife died in a car accident 8 years ago, he has a 16 yr old son.
