Hi PrepGirl - the cough is going around my neck of the woods too. A lot of my coworkers and my family have been through it, and it really is tough to get rid of. I'm probably six weeks in and it's thankfully all but gone, but it was pretty bad. Lots of fluids and Mucinex (very productive cough) and I'm getting there.
Hope you feel better soon Thumbs Up

I'm stocking up on dog and cat food and will also be ordering garden seeds.

I have seed catalogues showing up in the mail, will be a few months yet before anything can go in ground here, but it gets me thinking "seeds and garden plan"

eweee I've had butter too long in my fridge (by accident not on purpose!) and if you use it (by accident!) the whole dish tastes like 'fridge'... I can't imagine doing that on purpose...yuck!

I had to work a health fair last week as part of my job, set up an information table for the place I work. At the health fair they gave away some awesome items which I can add to my health preps: a blood pressure cuff they type you put on your wrist and it automatically takes your blood pressure. Then a CPR kit that came with a DVD and a CPR dummy, so you can practice, I'm already CPR certified but they gave everyone that attended one.

I am working on OTC also.  But specifically creams & ointments because they are so much more expensive than say a bottle of ibuprofen.  I've got to replace burn gel, Neosporin, Benadryl cream & hydrocortisone.  Also doing eye wash & some other First Aid misc.  Got a ton of gauze at a Dollar Tree store in December so I'm good there.

Let me ask you guys a question... how long do you keep creams, gels, ointments in your preps before you restock?  The problem is you rarely use these & for me at least before I know it they are past their dates but I've barely used them so it's hard to just throw them out & buy all new.  So how long is an ointment good for past it's date?

Techno, when butter is off it goes rancid and you couldn't miss that as it stinks and tastes horrible. I suspect that tinned butter would go rancid if there was any air getting into it, so I guess you'd be able to tell quite easily. But I do know someone who puts a pack of locally made raw butter in his fridge and then leaves it for 6 months (in which time it goes dark orange and smelly) and then he slices it and eats it like cheese. I've thought about trying it but can't quite bring myself to do it. But he's still alive and showing no ill effects.

Techno- I haven't had lemon curd in years! My Gran used to serve it over short cake and sometimes she would make tasty lemon tarts! Now I have to find some!

I confess I have my doubts about canned butter.

If tinned food experiences microscopic punctures, generally the food just goes bad and visibly so (stinky too).  If, however, the bacterium which wins the race is botulinus, which is a very common soil bacteria, it becomes undetectably (without a lab) deadly.  Botulinus toxin is easily destroyed by cooking, but who cooks butter?  (Okay so you can cook with it but ghee is good for that too and stores more fat per litre.)

For spreading on bread mayonaise is a better long term storage stuff for the savories and lemon curd for the sweet.  These come in jars and a lid is a smaller space to check for damage than the whole tin.  Additionally the acidity slows decomposition quite dramatically as well, should the worst be missed.

I have never tried butter powder - this was the first place I ever heard of it - but my research starts here.

Ok, I just looked on Amazon and they sell canned butter, also canned bacon and canned ground beef. Wow, I didn't realize that the powdered eggs were so expensive, someone has been giving me mine for free from their native American food commodities, they don't use the powdered eggs.

How about tinned butter? I know I can't buy it here in NZ but the stuff you can buy in the USA in red tins in actually NZ tinned butter! Go figure!

Penham, I love powdered eggs. I went to boarding school and they made our scrambled eggs with them and I loved it. I can still taste it. It's another product I can't buy here, but no need as I have loads of chickens. It makes a sort of powdery, crumbly, watery scrambled eggs - which doesn't sound nice but you can grow to love it.

I'm stocking up on rice this month, as we've nearly eaten all ours and I just didn't notice. I've also filled the gaps in my loo roll stock pile.

Pelham, lol no I have never tried powder butter but I have read that if you use a little oil when you rehydrate it is not bad. I really never want to ever have to eat all of this dry stuff but I owned a restaurant and learned much from my cooks. I can take shoe leather and make it taste pretty good.

Biggest thing to have in your preps is oil and you have to replace that it does go bad, I am getting ready to get a few gallons this year. The other items to have are beef and chicken bouillon cubes, they last a long time. I buy the big containers at SAMs.   They add salt and flavor to very flat dishes you can also make gravy with the cubes.   Cooking with oil especially olive oil is good for you and makes even vegetables taste better when a little is drizzled on.

I also have lots of spices. But the butter I will have to wait until TSHTF. Anything tastes great when you are hungry is what I figure.

Did not help your question but you got my theory on food when TSHTF!

I know powdered eggs are horrible for eating, but they are great for cooking in recipes, that is all I use.

Flumom, butter powder? Have you actually tried it? How does it taste compared to regular butter? I didn't even know it existed until you just mentioned it here, so I googled it and found it sold several places. Where did you purchase yours?

Purchased powder butter and popcorn. Hate the thought of no munchies and no butter to add flavor to freeze dry food.

It's February, wow, the time is passing by so quickly. I am still working on re-organizing my house, it is a slow process. Mainly because the motivation comes in spurts, lol. I am going to plant an apple tree this spring and some other type of fruit tree, maybe pear. It's time to implement my plan of being able to eventually have fruit all summer long for free. So I need to research, what ripens when, etc. I have a peach tree that gets loads of peaches, 2 years ago I planted 2 plum trees that have not had fruit yet. I would also like a pecan tree.
