Thanks Diligent for the heads-up.

The Mysterious Flu That's Now Causing Mass Deaths in Syria

© press. The virus has left many unwell residents in the northern city and trickled down to Western Raqaa as well.

Reports of a ‘mysterious’ virus have been reported in a city north of Raqaa known as Tel Abyad city.

The virus has left many unwell residents in the northern city and trickled down to Western Raqaa as well.

As of 3 February 2016, 20 people had died from the virus, the symptoms appeared at fist to be similar to influenza.

Activist group, Raqaa is Being Slaughtered Silently reported that distress signals were sent to various medical and humanitarian agencies but had not been answered.

Other reports have cited that bird flu and swine flu are on the rise in Syria, which explains the virus and its flu like symptoms.

Swine flu deaths in Tartus, Murhardh and Latakia were recorded, the first being a 26 year old doctor by the name of Tony Saba at the Tishreen Hospital in Latakia.

Government acknowledgement of the disease however has not been forthcoming and what is more worrying is that in addition bird flu has also been found in parts of Syria such as the Northeastern town of Qamishli and across the border in Turkish towns such as Urfa, including the death of many birds in South Qamishli bird farms.

In Canada, newly arrived Syrian refugees showed signs of flu when 11 of them reached the Edmonton Catholic Social Services, although apparently with no pre-existing conditions.

Even while the Government play down numbers, this has not stopped panic amongst Syrian residents and parents have resorted to keeping their kids home from school and taking over-priced flu vaccines they believe are specifically for Swine flu but are not.

IS fighters are apparently in a panic as they fear the virus may wipe out its fighter so are handing out leaflets and appealing for doctors to come to the region.

Swine flu is very similar to ordinary strands of flu but have more severe side effects, however it tends to affect more vulnerable persons: children, elderly, pregnant women and those with pre-existing health conditions, to the point of fatality.

Bird or avian flu rarely affects human as it is passed bird to bird but of course there have been cases of humans being infected even leading to death.

TAP – Wars provide great opportunities for mass killing of civilians or military forces  by means of vaccine and other medical interventions.  Gulf War Syndrome was a recent example.  Spanish flu in 1918/1919 was an earlier operation of the depopulationists.  Those who stayed home, survived.  Those who sought medical assistance, or went to hospital didn’t.

Several hypotheses jump to mind:

1, A new strain of flu, jumped into humans from "bushmeat" (I know it is an African term, but it is appropriate in an area where people are eating anything they can find) bad news!

2, A nasty, but well known, strain of flu which has been rendered extra deadly because its hosts are starving, sick, stressed and exhausted.

3, Chemical attack

4, Biological attack.

So far there is insufficient data to form a theory but........

Unknown virus infects dozens of civilians in the countryside of Raqqa

Posted by: Hamoud Almousa in Raqqa news 03/02/2016 0 2,898 Views

Exclusive – Raqqa is being slaughtered silently

70 km north of Raqaa there is Tel Abyad city , which is dominated by Kurdish protection forces YPG in the middle of the last year, in partnership with Army of the Syria Democratic forces they carried out an ethnic displacement for its people to be under the facto authority in the absence of services and the exposition to various violations.

during the last week there was news about the spread of an unknown virus led to the injury of dozens of residents of the city and its countryside before it spreads southward to reveal new cases in the west countryside of Raqqa, where the progression of the disease to cause the death of about twenty civilians so far.

And the symptoms of the disease is similar to the symptoms of influenza as a viral infection spread from person to another easily through inhalation and aimed all age groups, as characterized by sudden high body temperature and the incidence of cough (usually dry), headache, pain in muscles and joints, nausea and severe (malaise), sore throat, runny nose and, while the cases of normal seasonal influenza recover within a week without the need for the development of medical care, but the diagnosed cases ended in death, mostly unexplained.

Infection:
Seasonal influenza spreads easily and can break into schools, special care centers, homes or commercial buildings and cities, so when the infected coughs he will secrete spray rack of infection and will expose any one will inhaled for the risk of infection, as the virus can spread through contaminated hands, and to prevent it should be covered the mouths and noses with a tissue when coughing and washing hands regularly.

Prevention:
the prevention of this disease, “inexplicable” is to avoid direct contact with infected and isolate them in addition to the intensive care of hygiene and not to approach the gatherings, and for children they must wear medical masks and take the oral temperature and not to approach the foci of infection.

Against this background, local activists sent distress calls to medical and humanitarian organizations and appealed to send medical teams to lend a helping hand and provide appropriate treatment, but without any action or response from any side or party .

I found an English version of the pamphlet that IS/ISIS/Daesh has produced in the following blog.  It seems that a lot of the initial  information has come from  "Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently" which seems to have a record of good reporting.

https://thoughtfrontblog.wordpress.com/2016/02/21/isis-advice-for-swine-flu-pray/

In recent weeks, Daesh has suffered a new blow in its attempt to govern: swine flu. As reported by the courageous journalists of Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently, there has been an outbreak of a deadly disease characterized by flu-like symptoms. Cases were first observed among residents of Tell Abyad, a city near the Daesh capital of Raqqa, and spread to the countryside west of the capital. As of the beginning of February, about 20 deaths were reported.

Although there seems to be no conclusive evidence that the illness is swine flu, nevertheless both RIBSS and ISIS itself is reporting it as such. (In the interest of full disclosure, it bears noting that the latter is using WordPress, the same blogging tool hosting Thought Front.)

Daesh, not surprisingly, is concerned. Reportedly they are distributing leaflets in their territory instructing the populace on steps to take to avoid contracting flu. They also circulated an infographic in their propaganda channels, which I presume has roughly the same advice.

The reason why I tend to think this is legit and they have some sort of bird flu outbreak underway is because bird flu is so off the grid these days that swine flu is the one commonly used for propaganda, and not bird flu.  The bleeding gums is also an accurate description.   Something is happening over there.

People Die from ‘Bird Flu’ in IS-Held Areas of Eastern Syria

IS has urged people to visit hospitals and use medical masks to protect themselves against the disease

People die from bird flu in IS-held areas of Eastern…

DEIR AL-ZOUR — The Islamic State (IS) is concerned over the various cases of ‘bird flu’ reported across the areas under its control in Syria.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the jihadist group is now urging civilians in the areas near Deir al-Zour, Eastern Syria, to frequently visit hospitals and receive medical masks to protect themselves against the the bird flu.

The SOHR quoted sources inside IS-held territories that the extremist group is deeply concerned over the infection’s spreading from patients to its jihadists.

There are reports received by the London-based organisation revealing that four members of one family were transferred to Al-Mayadin town in the south of Deir al-Zour last week as they showed symptoms of vomiting, nose and gums bleeding, blood mixed with phlegm, high fever and coughing.

The patients later died due to lack of medicines, medical staff and experience in dealing with such serious diseases.

However, these cases of infection and death are not the only cases in the IS territories. People are reportedly concerned over the spread of the bird flu amid the absence of necessary medical care inside IS territories.

Swine and Bird Flu on the Rise Across Syria

Deaths related to swine and bird flu are beginning to emerge across Syria. While the government has remained tight-lipped about the scale of the issue, state-controlled media outlets are finally starting to release figures for cases across the country

Wael recovered from swine flu last week after being treated at the al-Bassel Hospital in Tartus. “I was very close to death,” he said. “If I had not made it to the hospital in time and received the right treatment, I would be dead by now,” he added. Because of the rising number of swine flu cases, according to Wael, nobody is allowed into the al-Bassel Hospital unless they are wearing a face mask.

The disease has reached the nearby province of Latakia as well; the first death due to swine flu occurred in a 26-year-old doctor named Tony Saba who worked at the Tishreen Military Hospital in Latakia. Saba’s friends have questioned medical and media reports claiming the swine flu virus causes deaths only in old people, children and those with compromised immune systems. They also confirmed that Saba did not have any chronic diseases or underlying immunodeficiency.

Government Cover-Up as Disease Spreads

Abu Jafar, who owned a dairy shop in Dahiyat Tishreen in Latakia, died last week at the National Hospital in the city.

The doctor who was overseeing his case said that the primary cause of Abu Jafar’s death was "viral pneumonia,” which is considered the most serious complication of swine flu. The hospital administration, however, tested all of his family members for the virus, and asked them not to publish the cause of their son’s death.

Despite the secrecy surrounding the number of cases, anonymous medical sources have confirmed that swine flu led to the death of at least one person in the city of Muhardeh in the Hama Governorate, and that there have been some 20 other critical cases throughout the city.

What makes the situation even more serious is the possible spread of bird flu in the city of Qamishli in northeastern Syria. Many residents are scared, particularly after one person at the National Hospital died after displaying symptoms very similar to bird flu, coupled with the news that many birds in South Qamishli’s bird farms have recently died.

Rozana’s correspondent in Qamishli spoke with Akhteen Asaad, a doctor in the city’s local hospital, who said that six people had died in the hospital, though he refused to specify whether the cause of death was bird flu or pneumonia. According to the same doctor, up until this point, the hospital administration has not sent any samples to Damascus for laboratory testing and disease identification.

Bird flu has reached Tal Abyad in northern Syria as well. Many sources said there have been 15 cases in the city, and Rozana's correspondent on the Turkish border, Ayman Bakkour, confirmed that two Syrians had died from swine flu in the Turkish city of Urfa.

“The symptoms of swine flu are the same as those of the common flu, except that they are much more intense. They start with a high fever, from 39 to 40 degrees Celsius [102 to 104 Fahrenheit], accompanied by fatigue, body aches, cough, lack of appetite and nausea," said Fatima, a laboratory physician working in Syria. "The symptoms soon intensify, causing difficulty in breathing, confusion and, in some cases, pneumonia and severe heart and respiratory failure.”

Fatima said she was shocked that the Syrian government's Health Directorates are still forcing state secrecy on the issue, “even though laboratory tests have confirmed five cases in the Assad Hospital, and six cases in the National Hospital in Latakia, in addition to other cases in private hospitals.”

The State Plays Down the Numbers

The Syrian government's Ministry of Health and its directorates do not admit to the growing danger of swine flu, insisting that cases in Syria do not exceed normal numbers. However, last Monday, the state-owned Tishreen newspaper published an article about the spread of swine flu in Syria.

According to the newspaper’s sources, swine flu is thought to be behind six deaths in the city of Tartus as of last Sunday, January 31. Additionally, 25 people are suspected of having the flu in the al-Bassel Hospital, two of whom are in a critical condition. According to the same article, there were nine cases in al-Qadmous, three in al-Sheik Badr and one in Banias – all in Tartus – and one case in the town of Dreikeesh in Latakia. The newspaper attributed the high number of deaths and illnesses to the lack of specialized treatment facilities in the province.

The newspaper even revealed that a high-level crisis management group was formed in the city of Tartus, which was charged with keeping the disease under control and distributing vaccines to all public hospitals in the relatively small city.

Exploiting People’s Fear

Ammar is a close observer of social networking sites and very interested in the "pandemic of influenza,” as he calls it. “Since the regime revealed this much information, it should be clear to us that the reality is much worse,” he said regarding the newspaper report.

In some areas, parents are keeping their children home from school, while others have considered leaving the country. “If the virus continues to spread at this rate, we will have to leave the country. What we hear from people is scary,” said Samia, a mother from Tartus.

In the middle of all of this, some are willing to exploit other people’s fear in order to make some extra money. According to Tawfiq, a pharmacist from Latakia, “many pharmacists use people's fear of the disease, selling scared customers seasonal flu vaccines for very high prices and claiming that they are vaccines for swine flu, even though there is no specific vaccine for swine flu.”

The “Islamic State” require people coming to headquarters and hospitals to put “medical mask”, doctors confirm infections and deaths because of “bird flu”

The “Islamic State” is still require people coming to headquarters and hospitals to put “medical mask” in most areas of Deir Ezzor province, in order to prevent the infection’s spreading from patients to the members of the organization or to other citizens, the activists of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights were informed by intersecting sources that the organization started this procedure after the death of four people from one family, they were taken over a week ago to the town of al-Mayadin in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor for treatment, they showed symptoms of vomiting, nose and gums bleeding, blood mixed with phlegm, high temperatures and coughing as well as other conditions associated with it.

Medical sources also confirmed to the activists of the Observatory that these four people are suffering from the “bird flu”, and that these four people have appeared in the town of Beqres near al-Mayadin and that they were three men and a girl, three men were moved to Al -Raqqah province for treatment, but people who were transferred from Shaddadi to al-Mayadin have died due to lack of necessary equipment and medicines, and the lack of medical staff and lack of experience in dealing with such serious and infectious diseases, also the activists of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights were informed that a fear state prevails among the citizens in the “Islamic State” controlled areas, from the possibility of the spread of this disease, amid the absence of necessary medical care, and lack of medical staff expert of addressing these diseases, and especially because most of the area depend on poultry breeding and feed on its products.

An older article, but could have some relevance.  Also makes one wonder if the different bird flu strains emerging in the U.S. could be a form of bio attack.

Did Maine firm seed a Syrian bioweapon?

The company shipped a vaccine in violation of a federal export ban, and several former executives were sentenced to prison, but Maine Biological Laboratories denies its action led to a chemical weapon.

A Maine company may have helped Syrian dictator Bashar Assad build his biological-weapons capability when it illegally shipped vaccines containing a flu-like avian disease virus to Syria in 2001 and early 2002.

Maine Biological Laboratories of Winslow, now a division of the German firm Lohmann Animal Health, GmbH, shipped more than 14 million doses of its vaccine for Newcastle disease, a pathogen that’s deadly to chickens and other commercial poultry, to a Syrian company in 2001.

At the time, such exports required special licenses because Syria was suspected of sponsoring terrorism. The company paid a $100,000 civil penalty to settle charges related to the incident brought by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security.

The company admitted that it had shipped the vaccine with the knowledge that its action violated a federal export ban.

On Saturday, The New York Times published a report on how Syria built its chemical weapons stockpile with the help of foreign companies, and cited Maine Biological Laboratories as “one of the best-known cases” of a U.S. company providing a precursor for chemical weapons.

But the Newcastle disease virus – an organism, not a toxic agent – is not believed to play a role in the development of chemical weapons, and does not appear to be related to the sarin nerve gas that the U.S. says was used to kill at least 1,400 Syrian civilians last month.

The virus can be transferred from birds to humans, but the symptoms in people are mild, according to an article on the disease in “Weapons of Mass Destruction: An Encyclopedia of Worldwide Policy, Technology and History,” published in 2004.

The company sent a statement to The New York Times saying that linking the incident in 2001 “with the use of poisonous gas … to kill people is totally misleading and categorically false.”

“Even the most pathogenic strain of Newcastle disease virus is only capable of causing disease in chickens and is in no way a threat to human health or lives,” read the statement issued by company spokesman Jeff Butler.

Newcastle disease has been a virus of choice for biological-weapons researchers seeking ways to destroy an opponent’s food supply.

U.S. bioweapons researchers studied the disease at Fort Detrick, Md., in the early 1950s, according to a paper on biological warfare threats by Lester C. Caudle III, former command surgeon of the Department of Defense’s On Site Inspection Agency. It was chosen, Caudle wrote, because it “had a devastating mortality and could render a predictable epidemic-producing agent in the animal population.”

Caudle wrote that the goal of such a weapon “is to affect humans indirectly by limiting their food supply” in wartime, possibly adding “the prospect of starvation of a population to the immediate devastating effects of conventional weapons.”

In addition to the $100,000 fine for its exports to a Syrian company, Maine Biological Laboratories was fined $500,000 in a case involving illegal importation of avian flu viruses from Saudi Arabia. Eight of the company’s former executives pleaded guilty to smuggling, mail fraud and conspiracy in the export and shipment of viruses and vaccines in the case, and several were sentenced to prison in 2005.

The company was later purchased by Lohmann Animal Health, which, since 2008, has financed $19 million in expansions of the facility on China Road in Winslow, which still produces animal vaccines.

Company spokesman Butler told The New York Times that the viruses shipped to Syria contained no live organisms, and suggested there is ambiguity regarding federal restrictions on such substances. He wrote that under federal law, “the U.S. Commerce Department is free to call any item they wish ‘restricted,’ even if it is without merit.”

But in federal court filings submitted in the 2005 case, prosecutors noted that the preamble to the relevant law – the Export Administration Regulations – “makes clear that they apply to ‘vaccines, whether live, attenuated, or dead.’ “

The Portland Press Herald asked Butler – an outside public relations contractor – to seek clarification on that point, but he was not able to do so by press time.

According to case records from the Bureau of Industry and Security, Maine Biological Laboratories made the illegal shipments in the period from January 2001 to February 2002. Company officials made at least four such shipments, knowing that they were violating regulations, and in three cases made false statements to federal regulators. The company was banned for five years from shipping regulated exports.

the thing is any Government or NGO could release a virus anywhere anytime ,

in fact anyone working in a biolab could do it,

just look at the Manning/ Assange theft of "TOP SECRET" files
