Brazil: H1N1 has already made nearly 700 dead
The bird flu epidemic now raging in Brazil has already caused 679 deaths since January, according to the authorities, a much higher balance sheet than in 2015 which concerned two months before Rio Olympics. Until 23 May, the Ministry of Health recorded 3,518 cases of people infected with the influenza A (H1N1). Last year, only 36 deaths had been recorded. The south-east of the country and especially the state of Sao Paulo, with 310 deaths, are the most affected areas. The state of Rio de Janeiro, host city of the Olympics from 5 to 21 August next, totalizes 34 deaths. The H1N1 virus has emerged in recent years in Brazil, between the months of May and July, when temperatures are cooler. This year the epidemic began in February, even before the end of the austral summer, taking the authorities by surprise. The reasons for this precocity remain unexplained. But most experts believe that the virus may have been brought by Brazilians who traveled in the northern hemisphere during the first months of the year http://www.ennaharonline.com/en/news/12385.html |

Death toll from swine flu grows to 764 in Brazil A total of 764 people have died of H1N1 influenza virus, also known as swine flu, in Brazil so far this year, the Ministry of Health said Tuesday. This epidemic has claimed 85 lives in the last week across the country, far outpacing the 36 deaths from the virus registered in all of 2015. A total of 3,978 cases of the severe respiratory infection have also been registered this year, as opposed to just 141 last year. According to the Ministry of Health, 460 new cases have been discovered last week. Among the casualty, 352 have died in the country's most populous state of Sao Paulo alone, making up 45.7 percent of the total. In order to stop the rising number of victims, the government is launching a vaccination campaign, which aims to inoculate around 50 million people, particularly among vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, children and the elderly. http://www.china.org.cn/world/2016-06/08/content_38625597.htm |
