While Hungary reported another group of H5N8 avian flu outbreaks in poultry, South Korea raised its flu alert level because of concerns over the H5N6 strain.

Hungary, France, Netherlands report more H5N8

For the third day in a row, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said Hungary is reporting more than 20 outbreaks of H5N8 today on poultry farms in the south-central part of the country.

Today officials detailed 24 outbreaks involving a total of 155,202 ducks and geese. The previous 2 days saw 33 and 39 H5N8 outbreaks, respectively.

The outbreaks, which began on Dec 7 through 9, are centered around the towns of Jaszszentlaszlo and Tazlar and include both farms and backyard flocks of birds.

http://www.healthmap.org/site/diseasedaily/article/h5n8-avian-flu-flies-across-europe-112216
As of November 21st, there have been at least 56 outbreaks of H5N8 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in eight countries in Europe and two in the Middle East, just in the month of November alone [1].  Hundreds of thousands of birds have died as a direct result of the virus or through the culling of birds as authorities attempt to curb the spread of the virus.  Many different species have been affected, including gulls, geese, ducks, chickens, turkeys, swans, and other types of waterfowl.  HPAI outbreaks can have devastating economic consequences due to the massive loss of livestock and the trade restrictions that follow.  Large farms in Germany, Hungary, Austria, Israel, and Iran that house thousands of birds have already been affected [1].

Will it spread to humans?

Dec 14, 2016

One day after Macau said it was halting importation of poultry from mainland China because of H7 detection in birds, officials there now report that a 58-year-old asymptomatic man who represents the island's first H7N9 case and his wife are quarantined, the South China Morning Post reported. According to news reports, the man owned a poultry stall where two samples of poultry tested positive for H7N9.

None of the man's chickens were sold at the market, and authorities have begun to disinfect the market and cull the remaining 10,000 birds.

Most notably, genetic analysis has shown that the H5N6 strain circulating in the nation is similar to the strain prevalent in Guangdong province and Hong Kong, China.

H5N8 activity in Europe, meanwhile, shows no signs of slowing.

The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) today posted a report detailing 39 outbreaks of H5N8 in Hungary, all but 2 of them on poultry farms. Yesterday the central European country reported 33 outbreaks involving more than 300,000 animals. Today an additional 222,451 susceptible ducks and geese were reported to the OIE.

It is amazing no one is talking about this more. Avian Flu - the disease that inspired the birth of AFT is spreading like wildfire.

December 27, 2016

In quickly evolving developments over the past few days, Greece announced its first highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza detection, with the virus also suspected in a spate of outbreaks in Bulgaria.

Meanwhile, H5N6 and H7N9 activity sparked actions to curb the viruses in different parts of China, while outbreaks in Japan and South Korea continue to take a toll and several countries in Europe, India, and Israel continue to battle more outbreaks from H5N8 as well as other strains.

European developments span 8 countries

In Greece, tests on a mute swan found on Dec 14 in a natural park near the Evros River delta in the eastern part of the country died of H5N8 avian flu, according to a report to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

Asia update: China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan

Recent human H7N9 cases in neighboring areas of China prompted health officials in Suzhou, one of Jiangsu province's biggest cities, to suspend the sale of live poultry, Reuters reported on Dec 25, citing the official People's Daily news Web site.

The city of Shanghai recently reported an H7N9 infection in a man who had traveled from Jiangsu province, according to the report, which also noted that authorities in Anhui and Fujian provinces have shuttered some live markets.

"It's just a bird cold, doctor."

https://www.nknews.org/2016/12/north-korea-issues-guidelines-to-prevent-spread-of-bird-flu/

The North Korean government is increasingly concerned over the growing avian influenza (also known as bird flu) epidemic in East Asia, state-run media indicated on Thursday.

But preventive methods issued by media remain primitive, suggesting that an outbreak of H7N9 avian flu – which has a 40 percent fatality rate – in the country could have a disastrous effect.

“If one is infected with the bird flu… within one to two days, one will suffer from high fever and headache, followed by coughing and sputum,” the North Korean ruling party organ Rodong Sinmun said on Thursday.

“One would have to adapt many methods accordingly, including maintaining a high level of hygiene and working out to increase the resistance, as well as gargling with salt water and drinking garlic juice.”

Pyongyang so far has remained silent about whether the country is suffering from any form of bird flu outbreak.

But it is frequently updating readers on the status of the outbreak of the disease in South Korea, with 24 articles published this month with the keywords “South Korea” and “bird flu”.

South Korea has seen the worst spate bird flu cases in ten years, with some 26 million poultry being culled after the H5N6 strain was detected in public places. There are yet to be any reported cases of humans contracting the disease.
