http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/nc71105714#executive

There was a quarry blast causing a M2.1 quake 7 km north of Oroville on february 8- 19.56 UTC

A few days later there was http://edition.cnn.com/2017/02/13/us/california-oroville-dam-spillway-failure/index.html Proberbly the quarry blast had nothing to do with the water-system "problems" causing the evacuation of 200.000 people ? (Just a question)

Finally, the reason for the scramble to fix the dam is because a new storm system is forecast for later this week put water officials on a race against time. Bill Croyle, the acting director of the state Department of Water Resources, said they planned to continue discharging flows at a rate of 100,000 cubic feet per second, with the hope of lowering the reservoir level by 50 feet.

The biggest concern was that a hillside that keeps water in Lake Oroville — California’s second largest reservoir — would suddenly crumble Sunday afternoon, threatening the lives of thousands of people by flooding communities downstream. With Lake Oroville filled to the brim, such a collapse could have caused a “30-foot wall of water coming out of the lake,” Cal-Fire incident commander Kevin Lawson said at a Sunday night press conference. Luckily, so far this scenario has not played out.

Three environmental groups — the Friends of the River, the Sierra Club and the South Yuba Citizens League — filed a motion with the federal government on Oct. 17, 2005, as part of Oroville Dam’s relicensing process, urging federal officials to require that the dam’s emergency spillway be armored with concrete, rather than remain as an earthen hillside.

The groups filed the motion with FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. They said that the dam, built and owned by the state of California, and finished in 1968, did not meet modern safety standards because in the event of extreme rain and flooding, fast-rising water would overwhelm the main concrete spillway, then flow down the emergency spillway, and that could cause heavy erosion that would create flooding for communities downstream, but also could cause a failure, known as “loss of crest control.”

Another reason NOT to live in California, floods, earthquakes, mudslides (from the floods), fire, and failing dams.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-02-13/oroville-dam-drains-problem-remains-leaving-evacuees-limbo

While the lack of deterioration is good news, the LA Times has released the following map showing the areas which are still at risk of flooding near Lake Oroville.

And in addition to the threat of the upcoming rains, a residual risk with the emergency spillway is that the erosion from the overflowing water may erode the earth by the dam, destabilizing the structure. According to AP, the erosion at the head of the emergency spillway threatens to undermine the concrete wall and allow large, uncontrolled releases of water from Lake Oroville. Those flows could overwhelm the Feather River and other downstream waterways and levees and flood towns in three counties.

Department engineer and spokesman Kevin Dossey told the Sacramento Bee the emergency spillway was rated to handle 250,000 cubic feet per second, but it began to show weakness Sunday after flows peaked at 12,600 cubic feet per second.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-02-14/oroville-dam-evacuation-order-lifted-residents-allowed-return-water-level-drops A 12ft /3.6m drop with the maximum 901ft/275meter does not sound very safe with new storms on their way (also snow melt a problem ?) and the spillway-failure being clear. http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/oroville-ca/95965/weather-warnings/331994

A major collapse does not stay at the location of the incident but goes all the way in the watersystem both downstream flooding AND upstream sudden waterdrop. Did I get it correct the US has something close to 30.000 dams ?

Believe it or not, it's apparently 84,000 - although only 8,100 are classed as major dams.

Off topic but interesting nonetheless, this website explains the negative impacts that dams can have on a river system.

Thank you jacksdad,

If those 84.000 dams would require 10.000$ each per year for maintenance (just a number) you can put another 0000 behind the 84.000=840.000.000 $ per year for keeping the dam, and system around it functioning. When politics do not want to raise tax how you will finance that ?

I don't know... maybe they could spend the money they do get more wisely?   There is absolutely no lack of government funds.

DeepThinker, http://damnationfilm.com/faq Puts questionmarks in the wisdom of building dams in the first place. Interesting points-I always believed hydro-power was-within limits-a good thing.

But on this forum you can learn and see things from a different corner-that is one of the things I like from AFT.

You (also) live in California-you need dams for drinkingwater ? The alternative is moving a lot of people ? Climatechange is making already existing problems even larger.

Yes Dutch_Josh I agree dams do have a tremendous ecological impact that is often underappreciated.   My comment was simply there is no lack of funds just a lack of priorities.   Maybe the government should pay for the important stuff first.   Then raise taxes if everybody agrees to fund less important stuff.

I am sick an tired of hearing the need for tax raises for roads, schools, fire, police and now damns.     There is PLENTY of money to fund those things.    We like to give all are money away our money for stupid programs and neglect the thing Government is supposed to.

A perfect example.... when Regan was Governor the state spent over 10% on in infrastructure, now we spend maybe a percent or two.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-03-01/dramatic-aerial-footage-shows-what-oroville-dam-looks-now On Monday the California Department of Water Resources stopped the flow of water down the spillway so that they could assess the damage. http://halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/news/u-s-national-news/3621-chemical-explosion-at-oroville-dam-in-california

A massive explosion has taken place near the Oroville Dam in California. The explosion was so powerful, it registered on seismographs with the US Geological Survey as a Magnitude 2.5 Earthquake!

Readers may recall it was this particular Dam which almost collapsed during torrential rains in California several years ago, with its main spillway literally torn out of the ground by raging overflow waters.

Now, an explosion has taken place very near the dam but NO DETAILS WHATSOEVER are being released about it!

Authorities are absolutely "mum" on the topic.

Were it not for the USGS reporting it as a Magnitude 2.5 Explosion, there would be a total blackout of information about this.

To put this event in perspective for you, during the attacks of September 11, when the World Trade Center Towers collapsed, those collapses only registered as a Magnitdue 2.0 -- while today's explosion registered as 2.5

That gives you an idea about how powerful this explosion at Oroville was! Yet no one is saying a word about it.

Was this a Terrorist Attack; perhaps some attempt to collapse the Dam and kill thousands with instant flooding? No one is saying.

We are endeavoring to determine what took place and expect to update this story later Saturday.

we are not building Dams here,

we are refilling our aquafires with treated waste water

,we do have a couple of desalanization plants as well,

without them we would be dire straites
Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.🖖

I have to agree with you, FluMom!

My wife and I were investigating moving to the San Diego area (Hi, JD!), but with the history of wildfires, and dying wildlife in the oceans, we said "Uh, no."
