Reports of contagious bird flu in Malaysia

Malaysia has reported an outbreak of a highly contagious bird flu virus.

Malaysia has reported an outbreak of a highly contagious H5N1 bird flu virus in the northern part of the country.

The World Organisation for Animal Health has cited a report from the Malaysian agriculture ministry, which says the strain's been confirmed among chickens at a backyard farm in Kelantan.

The H5N1 strain has been detected in Cambodia in recent weeks, but is different to the H7N9 virus that has caused the death of more than 110 people in China.

Associated Press

Malaysian authorities have raised an alert for northeast Kelantan state after the virulent H5N1 bird flu virus was found to have spread to poultry in more villages.

Some 24,000 birds have been culled in the state since the H5N1 strain was reported March 6 after several backyard poultry died.

Kelantan official Che Abdullah Mat Nawi says 20 villages are affected so far and authorities are getting more manpower and resources to survey a wider area so they can contain the spread of the virus.

He insisted it was not yet "an emergency situation" as no cases of the virus spreading to humans have been detected.

The H5N1 strain is highly contagious and the World Health Organization says it has caused hundreds of deaths worldwide over the last decade.

By Bernama - March 19, 2017 @ 9:03am

SEGAMAT: There is no necessity to quarantine areas found positive for H5N1 bird flu for the time being, says Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam.

He said this was because there had not been any cases of H5N1 infection affecting humans and the Health Ministry was making efforts to ensure it would not happen.

The ministry is implementing various preventive measures and giving awareness to those concerned.“We are disseminating information on health care by putting on protective wear such as face mask, apron and gloves to ensure that those handling chicken do not come in contact with chicken fluid,” he told reporters here tonight.

Earlier he attended a Segamat District Information Office dinner here with about 200 people including media personnel.

According to Kelantan Veterinary Services Department today, two new locations had been found positive for H5N1 in Pasir Mas.

I really don't get excited about H5N1 these days....the damn virus seems to refuse to re-assort, and evidence of human-to-human transmission is extremely weak (most clusters were families that likely were bathing in the same chicken poop!).

H7N9 is the one I'm keeping my eye on, but that still doesn't want to go H2H either.

Give 'em time....
