Along with their warning, the scientists list a dozen or so examples of the kind of actions that could turn humanity’s trajectory around. These include indisputably necessary strategies such as halting the conversion of native habitats into farmland; restoring and rewilding ecologies; phasing out fossil fuel subsidies; and promoting dietary shifts toward plant-based foods. With the future of humanity at stake, why aren’t we already doing these things? What will it really take for our civilization to change course and save itself from destruction?

Ignoring climate breakdown

We can begin to answer that simply by looking at the media’s reception to this warning. With fifteen thousand scientists—including Jane Goodall, E. O. Wilson, and James Hansen—declaring a potential catastrophe at hand, you might think this would make headlines everywhere. Think again. While it led to a few short articles in select publications around the world, with the one commendable exception of CNN, it was virtually ignored by American mainstream media.

Thanks, DJ!!

Nothing will happen in the USA to abate climate disasters, despite all of the evidence to the contrary.

It is interesting, as the states most impacted (Oklahoma, Texas, Florida etc.) are solidly Republican voting states.

By the time that these populations wake up to the truth, it will be far too late.  In fact, I believe that it already is too late, no matter how much energy/money is thrown at the problem.

Sad.

Charles, It is not only the US that is failing to deal with the coming climate disasters-most "developed" countries simply fail to do enough-in my opinion.

I agree that it is too late to avoid major problems. How fast things get how bad is a big question.

From +10C by 2026 (no life left) to +2 meter sealevelrise by 2100 are the two extremes. I tend to believe the worst case scenario may be very realistic-we will have already much larger problems by 2020-in wildfires, flooding, hurricanes, extreme weather, droughts etc-than the already very big problems we have this year.

What action could be effective and by whom is another question-I believe eating no meat, stop using fossil fuels-as much as possible-could have serious effects-but much more-in CO2. methane etc. reduction is needed. It could turn out that-eventhough people vote stupid-as consumers they may be willing to take the right steps ?

DJ-Two alarming messages from Hal Turner;

1-http://halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/news/u-s-national-news/1853-nuclear-terrorism-on-new-year-s-eve-denver-and-las-vegas-said-to-be-locations One or more nuclear attacks on the US (false flag or not) could push the world into (faster) chaos and collapse

2-http://halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/news/world-news/1852-chinese-ships-caught-illegally-selling-oil-to-north-korea ending with Hal Turner claiming US plans a war (proberbly) before march 20.

DJ-I do not agree with Hal Turner on most issues but in international news he may have some credit. I believe that he was correct, at superstation 95, on Saudi-Turkey(-US) plans to invade Syria twice. Proberbly one of the reasons it did not happen was that the news got out-so the surprise element was gone. (Other reasons could be disagreement between Turkey and Israel-KSA and Turkey not agree on military plans-Saudi Arabia had to push thru via Jordan and/or Iraq to reach Syria.)

At present there is a very major conflict between the US and Russia/China. The conflicts in Syria, Iraq. Ukraine, Libya and Korea (maybe also Pakistan-India) are part of the bigger conflict. The end of the US-petro dollar is the end of US being the global power.

War will only worsen the global crisis. We-as humans already face a global climate crisis-with very likely-temperatures (and sealevelrise) going exponential.

The US may be working on a war-plan for North Korea. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shock_and_awe "fire and fury" will be part of this plan.

Two scenario's

1 Very limited, Russia and China-AND NK-prewarned but unable/not willing to stop it. Missiles at NK energy facilities-infra-structure. Very limited loss of human life (unless NK chooses to react with military action).

2 Large scale-non nuclear-meant to make NK "go knock-out", risks is very high this scenario will not do the damage it is meant to do. NK military units may be able without central command from dug-in positions. Dams could flood Seoul, sleeper cells around the world could cause severe (strategic) damage. (China and Russia may see such an attack as an attack on their countries-may intervene in NK to try to control the conflict as much as possible. Also in other area's conflict could escalate-Israel attacking Iran etc.)

There are several "hot-blobs" in the oceans-making 2018 proberbly warmer and with more hurricanes/extreme weather than 2017. We need to deal with climate change before it deals with us !

Oil Giants admit to a 5C Temperature Increase being baked in but no one else will!

“Oil giants Shell and BP are planning for global temperatures to rise as much as 5°C by the middle of the century. The level is more than double the upper limit committed to by most countries in the world under the Paris Climate Agreement, which both companies publicly support.”
I believe a temperature increase of 5C and more will occur much, much sooner than mid-century. This is clearly an extinction event for most if not all complex life on planet earth.
In my May 2015 Oral Submission to the N.Z. Ministry of Environment, I pointed out that both the IEA and Shell Petroleum admit that close to 5C is baked in but none of the large NGO’s nor the global Green Party’s nor their networks are prepared to face the reality of the crisis. I received zero feedback from the Ministry minions but a standing ovation from the concerned members of the public at the hearing process. My oral presentation is embedded in the above hyperlink:
According to the conservative blogger Joe Romm at Think Progress the planet may have warmed 5C in 13 years once before;

DJ; This tends to an exponential model. Extreme weather-events happening now give an indication on what to expect. Defrozen virus, bacteria etc. other health risks will increase due to climate change.

The best "we" can do is to try to slow down the proces.

Is There A Ticking Time Bomb Under The Arctic?

"The permafrost contains twice as much carbon as is currently in Earth's atmosphere," Douglas says. "That's 1,600 billion metric tons."

In fact, there's more carbon in the permafrost, Douglas says, than all the carbon humans have spewed into the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution — first with steam trains, then with coal plants, cars and planes.

i watched a programe 30  years ago about the danger of melting permafrost,

Methane is far more of a green house gas than Carbon,

and the melting permafrost releases tons of that as well as Carbon.....

The Earth responds to climate change in interesting ways, sometimes producing what we call “feedbacks,” which can either amplify global warming or dampen it. Some of the feedbacks that can amplify warming have behavior that is hard to predict in the near future and leaves scenarios that are potentially worse than expected hanging over our heads. One of those is the release of greenhouse gas from thawing permafrost—and regions of shallow seafloor that were frozen land thousands of years ago when sea level was much lower.

The most dangerous-sounding issue involves methane hydrate, an ice-like substance full of methane that is present in some ocean sediments. Its sudden release is a suspect in some major extinction events. But how much we should worry about destabilizing methane hydrates or thawing permafrost is not perfectly clear.

A group of researchers led by Kathryn Sparrow headed to the Beaufort Sea in the Canadian Arctic to bring an improved measurement technique to bear on an important question: how much of the methane in the sea floor is ending up in our atmosphere?

Bubble trouble

A different group of scientists working offshore of Siberia has sounded alarms about plumes of methane it observed bubbling up from the seafloor there. Researchers are trying to work out how warming is affecting that bubbling methane and what it will do in the future.

Studies off Svalbard have found that methane bubble plumes there pre-date human-caused climate change. And, counterintuitively, those plumes have been shown to actually cause a net removal of atmospheric greenhouse gas by stimulating the growth of plankton that consume CO2. So there’s a lot to account for before projecting what the future holds for this particular feedback.

But back to Sparrow and her team working in the Canadian Arctic: they have essentially carbon dated the methane dissolved in the water by measuring radioactive carbon-14. As they moved from the shore toward deeper water, they were able to make measurements both at the bottom and in the surface water. This allowed them to calculate how much ancient methane was coming out of the seafloor and how much successfully reached the surface to be released into the atmosphere.

We don’t actually expect those two numbers to be the same. Microbes in the water can digest the methane and turn it into CO2. Currents may also drag the methane into the deep ocean.

Hungry microbes

The measurements did find plenty of ancient methane at the bottom, although there was also young methane produced by the microbial breakdown of dead plankton (another source is atmospheric methane that mixes into the water).

The surface water measurements are another story, though. Closer to shore, the team found a fair portion of ancient methane at the surface. But once the water got around 30 meters deep, the ancient methane all but disappeared from surface waters, accounting for 10 percent or less of the total methane dissolved in the water.

That indicates that things like hungry microbes are effectively preventing the methane that's being released on the seafloor from reaching the atmosphere once the water is deep enough. Since most of the Beaufort Sea is more than 30 meters deep, that means Beaufort seafloor methane isn’t being directly dumped into the atmosphere, even if warmer water is causing the seafloor to produce more.

In other words, the news is good, assuming other areas of the Arctic Ocean are behaving similarly. The obvious next question is: how will these processes respond to continued global warming? If the seafloor releases more methane, will microbes keep up as the water they live in warms?

That’s one piece of the puzzle researchers will need in order to offer more precise estimates of how much greenhouse gas the natural world will release in response to our own emissions. More evidence of limits on the release of methane could at least partially defang this particular sleeping dragon.

Permafrost in the Arctic is thawing faster than ever, according to a new US government report that also found Arctic seawater is warming and sea ice is melting at the fastest pace in 1,500 years.

The annual report released on Tuesday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration showed slightly less warming in many measurements than a record hot 2016. But scientists remain concerned because the far northern region is warming twice as fast as the rest of the globe and has reached a level of warming that’s unprecedented in modern times.

“2017 continued to show us we are on this deepening trend where the Arctic is a very different place than it was even a decade ago,” said Jeremy Mathis, head of NOAA’s Arctic research program and co-author of the 93-page report.

Findings were discussed at the American Geophysical Union meeting in New Orleans.

“What happens in the Arctic doesn’t stay in the Arctic; it affects the rest of the planet,” said acting NOAA chief Timothy Gallaudet. “The Arctic has huge influence on the world at large.”

Permafrost records show the frozen ground that many buildings, roads and pipelines are built on reached record warm temperatures last year nearing and sometimes exceeding the thawing point. That could make them vulnerable when the ground melts and shifts, the report said. Unlike other readings, permafrost data tend to lag a year.

Preliminary reports from the US and Canada in 2017 showed permafrost temperatures are “again the warmest for all sites” measured in North America, said study co-author Vladimir Romanovsky, a professor at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.

Arctic sea ice usually shrinks in September and this year it was only the eighth lowest on record for the melting season. But scientists said they were most concerned about what happens in the winter – especially March – when sea ice is supposed to be building to its highest levels.

Arctic winter sea ice maximum levels in 2017 were the smallest they’ve ever been for the season when ice normally grows. It was the third straight year of record low winter sea ice recovery. Records go back to 1979.

About 79% of the Arctic sea ice is thin and only a year old. In 1985, 45% of the sea ice in the Arctic was thick, older ice, said NOAA Arctic scientist Emily Osborne.

New research looking into the Arctic’s past using ice cores, fossils, corals and shells as stand-ins for temperature measurements show that Arctic ocean temperatures are rising and sea ice levels are falling at rates not seen in the 1,500 years. And those dramatic changes coincide with the large increase in carbon dioxide levels in the air, the report said.

This isn’t just a concern for the few people who live north of the Arctic circle. Changes in the Arctic can alter fish supply. And more ice-free Arctic summers can lead to countries competing to exploit new areas for resources. Research also shows changes in Arctic sea ice and temperature can alter the jet stream, which is a major factor in US weather.

This is probably partly responsible for the current unusual weather in the United States that brought destructive wildfires to California and a sharp cold snap to the south and east, according to NOAA scientist James Overland and private meteorologist expert Judah Cohen.

“The Arctic has traditionally been the refrigerator to the planet, but the door of the refrigerator has been left open,” Mathis said.

Outside scientists praised the report card.

“Overall, the new data fit with the long-term trends, showing the clear evidence of warming causing major changes,” in the Arctic, said Pennsylvania State University ice scientist Richard Alley.

http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2018/01/27/550292/US-UN-Human-rights-Donald-Trump-

The United Nations human rights chief has warned that US President Donald Trump’s speech in Switzerland would take the world back to the eve of World War One.

Zeid Raad al-Hussein expressed the alarm on Friday after Trump said in a speech at the Swiss ski resort of Davos that countries should pursue their own self-interest.

”It’s the script of the 20th century,“ Prince Zeid said. “He (Trump) urged all countries to pursue their own interest, almost without reference to the fact that if you do all of that, if each country is narrowly pursuing its agenda, it will clash with the agendas of others and we will take the world back to 1913 once again.”

In his address at the World Economic Forum, Trump repeated his “America first” slogan, saying he would expect all world leaders to put the interests of their own countries first.

-

“Ethnic nationalisms, chauvinistic nationalisms, a sense that there is a supremacy within communities determined on the basis of color or ethnicity, and that others are somehow lesser people, or that certain countries are somehow morally superior to others,” he said in reference to Trump’s speech.

Prince Zeid, a former Jordanian diplomat and member of the deposed royal family of Iraq, has, on several occasions, criticised Trump in the past while serving as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The Trump administration, in return, has threatened to quit the UN Human Rights Council, which works closely with Zeid’s office despite being separate from it.

http://arctic-news.blogspot.nl/2018/01/2017-was-hottest-year-on-record.html

We are already 1,6C above pre-industrial level-moving to 2C+ within a few years.

Indeed, warming in the Arctic is taking place much faster than elsewhere, and the difference is accelerating. There's a huge danger that accelerating warming in the Arctic will speed up feedbacks such as:
• huge amounts of methane getting released from the seafloor of the Arctic Ocean;
• melting of sea ice and permafrost causing more sunlight to get absorbed in the Arctic, as less sunlight gets reflected back into space;
• changes to jet streams causing more extreme weather, in turn resulting in more emissions, such as due to wildfires;
• and more.

In conclusion, feedbacks could speed up global warming by much more than what may be suggested by above trends that look only at surface temperature of the atmosphere and that are based on previous data when such feedbacks had yet to become manifest.

Add up the impact of all warming elements and, as an earlier analysis shows, the rise in mean global temperatures from preindustrial could be more than 10°C in a matter of years, as illustrated by the image below, which shows a much steeper rise.

Particularly devastating feedbacks could result from changes regarding heat and carbon dioxide taken up by oceans. Oceans now take up 93.4% of global warming, as illustrated by the image below.

You won't find many climate deniers in the Arctic. From Sitka, Alaska to Svalbard, Norway, people are living through a period of extraordinarily rapid changes that are altering their ways of life.

Alaska just had its warmest December on record, with a staggering statewide average temperature anomaly of 15.7 degrees Fahrenheit above average for the month.

“To have an entire state that is a quarter the size, almost, of the Lower 48 [states], 15 degrees Fahrenheit above normal for an entire month is extraordinary,” said Brian Brettschneider, a climate scientist at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, said in an interview.

He said a huge swath of the state, about equal to the size of California, Washington, and Oregon combined, was close to 20 degrees Fahrenheit above average in December, thanks in large part to a powerhouse area of high pressure that sat near the Frontier State throughout the month.

https://www.rt.com/usa/418588-woman-dragged-big-energy-donations/

A candidate for the West Virginia House of Delegates was dragged out of a hearing after listing the donations received by state lawmakers from fossil fuel companies. She was testifying on a bill on oil and gas drilling rules.

Lissa Lucas was criticizing a proposed bill, HB 4268, which would allow oil and gas companies to drill on private land with the consent of just 75 percent of the landowners. Energy companies are currently required to have 100 percent approval from landowners before they can extract gas and minerals from land.

As part of her testimony, she read out the list of names of lawmakers who received sizeable donations from fossil fuel companies. Her testimony elicited a less than warm reception from the legislature.

The people who are going to be speaking in favor of this bill are all going to be paid by the industry … the people who are going to be voting on this bill are often also paid by the industry,” Lucas said.

Lucas was ordered by House Judiciary Committee members to desist from making “personal comments” about members. As Lucas persisted, her microphone was cut off. When lawmakers refused to let her finish speaking, she told them to “drag me off.” Security was called and in a video of the incident she can be seen being dragged from the floor.

I got dragged out of House chambers … Because I was listing out who has been donating to Delegates on the Judiciary Committee,” Lucas wrote on her blog.

DJ-Clean energy is cheaper-can replace fossil fuel in relative short term. The main reason why it will not happen in that (needed) short term is that there are large amounts of money invested in fossil fuels, weapons for oil wars etc. Greed kills !

A sort of "ice-age" could be a result from land-ice (Antarctica, Greenland 2 miles/3 kilometer thick) sliding into the ocean(s). The difference between land- and sea-ice is often difficult to tell since a lot of land-ice is eroding below sealevel-becoming land-ice linked ice. When it cracks, breaks of, it is no longer land-ice, becomes sea-ice.

The data on climatechange have become that shocking I myself hesitate to look at it. Methane-level seems to be out of control with a lot of earthquakes in the (Ant)Arctic.

In my (DJ) opinion there are serious risks in these quakes. 1-A "burst" of methane could be so powerfull it can cause strong quakes, tsunami's.
2-Methane struck by lightning could catch fire (even-maybe ???-explode). Such a fire may be hard to put out, heats up area's that need cooling down.
3-Both quakes and methane form dangers for the formation of new (sea)ice.

Russia's new nuke weaponized radiation itself in a way that could leave massive swaths of Earth uninhabitable for the better part of a century.

I find the news on climate-change that depressing that I distance myself from it from time to time-other "doom and gloom" also may be even more urgent. A major war-for whatever reason-will also speed up climatechange, food/watercrises, number of refugees, spread of illnesses etc.

When I see an increase of earthquakes in the (Ant)Arctic-follow https://www.facebook.com/JoseBarbaNueva the only thing left is to be happy with every reasonable day we have, try to slow down processes with climatechange, try to buy time.

With Joe Neubarth I recognize this way of thinking. On climatechange the scenario's are not very clear, full of surprises, and all are bad.

Even in an optimistic mood-landice sliding into the ocean from Greenland and Antarctica-the consequences will be extreme due to underlying land being lifted up (less pressure from the ice)=earthquakes. Both those quakes and "mountains of ice" dropping into the ocean can cause global tsunami's far stronger than humans may even think of.

Already the jet-stream is going crazy bringing extreme weather allover the planet faster than ever before.

Looking at the coming (northern hemisphere) summer-heatwaves are very likely, effecting foodproduction. Hurricane-season, extreme storms, rainbombs, etc. will effect logistics.

I can imagine that already climatechange is effecting the US ability to start global wars.

When "tomorrowland" is dark enjoy today-it may be the best option you have.

@Satori, proberbly already tens of thousends do die due to climatechange-this year. Pakistan-Karachi-dealing with over 40C/100F degrees already.

Most likely climatechange is speeding up-"politicians" (it is not only Trump) can lie what they want. There have been several reports of wildfires, extreme weather is getting more extreme. (And yes-due to disrupted jet-stream there could be snow in april more south than usual-it just proofs the story-but when you want to live in fantasyland-many politicians do-factfree policies are the rule).

"Faster than expected" could translate in increased sealevelrise. When the land is sinking (in some area's) that could mean permanent flooding. (For the US Florida could expect this soon, also some small island-states are "drowning"). There are "uncertainties" but so much is quit certain reality will confront lies.

From climate change http://arctic-news.blogspot.nl/2018/04/how-much-warmer-is-it-now.html DJ-on a monthly basis we did see +2,37C above "pre-industrial" global warmth-increase) and https://insideclimatenews.org/news/02042018/antarctica-ice-sheet-shelf-glaciers-grounding-line-receding-worst-case-sea-level-rise-risk?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social (DJ-The proces is interesting, the timetable-2100 most likely way to optimistic.) extreme weather http://halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/news/local-news-nyc-nj-ct/2329-wow-sudden-onset-high-winds-battering-nj-nyc

Studies say Atlantic Ocean's circulation slowing dramatically, increasing climate change fears

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/science/ct-ocean-circulation-climate-change-20180411-story.html

The Atlantic Ocean circulation that carries warmth into the Northern Hemisphere's high latitudes is slowing down because of climate change, a team of scientists asserted Wednesday, suggesting one of the most feared consequences is already coming to pass.

The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation has declined in strength by 15 percent since the mid-20th century to a "new record low," the scientists conclude in a peer-reviewed study published in the journal Nature.

Historic rain inundates Kauai, cutting off Hawaii residents and tourists with floods and mudslides– “This has been the worst flood event I’ve ever seen my 49 years here on Hanalei”

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, the rain gauge in the town of Hanalei collected 27.52 inches of rain from early Saturday morning into Sunday morning. That beats all previous one- and two-day rainfall maximums for that location.

Global warming

DJ-Less ice is more warming, less land-ice is rising underlying layers is increase of seismic activity. Volcanism effects climate change. Volcanic (Sulphur) clouds can block sunlight, but soot/ash on snow/ice can warm things up-less sun-energy-reflection. Under Antarctica there are several volcano's. When they erupt it could cause high-speed melting/break-up of ice.
