Avian Influenza Report
Avian Influenza Report is a weekly report produced by the Respiratory Disease Office, Centre for Health Protection of the
Department of Health. This report highlights global avian influenza activity in humans and birds.
VOLUME 13, NUMBER 17
Reporting period: April 23, 2017 – April 29, 2017 (Week 17)
(Published on May 2, 2017)

Summary
1. Since the previous issue of Avian Influenza Report (AIR), there were 17 new human cases
of avian influenza A(H7N9) reported by Mainland China health authorities in Sichuan (5
cases), Beijing (2 cases), Guangdong (2 cases) Shandong (2 cases), Chongqing (1 case),
Fujian (1 case), Gansu (1 case), Henan (1 case), Hunan (1 case) and Jiangsu (1 case).
Since March 2013 (as of April 29, 2017), there were a total of 1439 human cases of avian
influenza A(H7N9) reported globally. Since October 2016 (as of April 29, 2017), 633
cases have been recorded in Mainland China.

2. Since the previous issue of AIR, there were no new human cases of avian influenza
A(H5N6). Since 2014 (as of April 29, 2017), 16 human cases of avian influenza
A(H5N6) were reported globally and all occurred in Mainland China. The latest case was
reported on December 1, 2016.

3. Since the previous issue of AIR, there were no new human cases of avian influenza
A(H5N1). From 2011 to 2016, 10 to 145 confirmed human cases of avian influenza
A(H5N1) were reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) annually (according to
onset date). In 2017, there have been so far two cases in Egypt.*

* Since November 21, 2012, WHO only publishes information on human cases with avian influenza A(H5N1)
infection in “Influenza at human - animal interface: Monthly Risk Assessment Summary”. Only cases of human
infection with H5N1 involved in events that are unusual or associated with potential increased risks will be
reported in Disease Outbreak News. The latest report was published in April, 2017.

Central China reports one H7N9 death

A woman died of H7N9 bird flu infection in central China's Hubei Province, local authorities said Tuesday.

The woman, 68, tested positive for the H7N9 strain of virus on April 27 after days of high fever with no apparent cause, the emergency response office of Wuhan City Government said in a statement.

She died on April 30.

H7N9 is a bird flu strain first reported to have infected humans in China in March 2013. Infections are most likely occur in winter and spring.

Northwest China reports new H7N9 case

XI'AN, May 5 (Xinhua) -- A new H7N9 virus infection was confirmed in the northwest China city of Xianyang, authorities announced Friday, following the death of another patient in the city days ago.

A 63-year-old male tested positive for the virus at 3 a.m. Friday. The patient was hospitalized in Xianyang on May 2 suffering fever, coughing and diarrhea, and was transferred to the provincial capital Xi'an.

All live poultry markets in Xianyang have been closed, examined and disinfected. Forty people who are suspected to have had contact with the patient have been isolated.

A 62-year-old man, the first H7N9 case reported in the province, died on May 1.

A total of 96 H7N9 virus cases were reported in China in March, of which 47 patients have died, according to the national health and family planning commission.
