The number of norovirus cases in Yolo County has more than doubled, health officials said Wednesday. At least 2,091 students, teachers and staff connected to several schools have been sickened by the gastrointestinal illness, Yolo County Public Health Public Information Officer Beth Gabor said. Gabor said the health department has received more calls concerning sick students. Just Monday, officials said there were at least 1,001 cases of norovirus. “The number of sick people is increasing every day at a very alarming rate,” Gabor last week said. Forty out of 65 public schools in the county are affected. The school districts impacted by the stomach virus are: Davis Joint Unified School District Esparto Unified School District Washington Unified School District Woodland Joint Unified School District Winters Joint Unified School District University of California, Davis Norovirus is highly contagious and can spread through contact with an infected person, by touching a contaminated surface or eating and drinking contaminated food or drink. Symptoms -- which can last between 1 to 3 days -- include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain, health officials said. Health officials warned the public to stay home for 48 hours after symptoms go away and to wash your hands regularly to prevent the spread of the norovirus. There are no medications or antibiotics that treat norovirus, but some people require hospitalization for IV fluids. Norovirus is the worst. The last time I got that was in 2014 after going to Hometown Buffet with my friends. We all got sick and so did the rest of our families. I've been told some parents are pulling their kids from school until they get a handle on the situation. |
