.......................  Partake of the unholy spirit.

Ah! So, that was the source of enlightenment for Trump on the road to Damascus Texas.

Apologies, it was a rum joke. Wink

To my absolute astonishment Trump has just donated a million dollars of his own personal fortune to the Texas relief program.

I don't know if this was a genuine gesture of kindness, or an amazingly desperate publicity stunt,  (This is no widow's mite; he can afford it without raising a sweat).  Though I suspect the former, because of the flack he has taken over this disaster, that might just be my cynicism talking.  So I shall give him the benefit of the doubt and say:

"Well done Trump!"

'Damned if he did...' Proof of the Trump & so-called evangelical racist hypocrisy against Obama

Trump pledges $1M for Harvey—$4M less than what he once offered for Obama's birth certificate

"Sure, $1 million is a lot of money, but Donald Trump is also worth $10 billion dollars (allegedly). Folks on Twitter were quick to note that it makes his $1 million donation .01% of his assets. “Median net assets for Americans = $44,900. So it's like donating $4.49.” That is, if that money even comes from him and not the Trump Foundation instead. Say, did President Obama ever get that check?"

Trump hasn't actually made the donation
he is still thinking about which organization to give it to
I',m not going to criticize his giving of a million dollars,it will certainly help
but when you put it into perspective ...

Nah, a cheap stunt.  Many professional athletes are doing more.

If he wants to help, he could (a) stop his stupid wall project, (b) back off on legal immigrants from Mexico, who will be needed to rebuild all the housing in Houston, (c) do something positive regarding climate change, and (d) fix the broken US flood insurance program.

I was absolutely wrong, again.  Sorry folks!

There appears to be about as much connection between what Trump promises fiscally and what he promises politically.

                                                                                                                                                   AND

Hopefully he can't wriggle out of this one.  Thee is nowhere on Earth as public as the white house.

THERE'S NOWHERE TO HIDE THIS TIME TRUMPIE.  So, cough up!  You can claim it back on your secret tax returns after all.

The poor people of Texas!  What a disgusting abuse of power!  I understand anyone who was taken in and voted for him originally; he does have a great stage presence and a ruthless determination to win at any cost.  But if you are still a supporter, you should be ashamed.  What a great pity impeachment can only be on such a narrow list of grounds.

I really, really envy you Americans for having a written constitution - ours is just implied.  But, brilliant though it is, perhaps a little fine tuning (to ensure that the greatest power carries the greatest penalties for misuse) could improve things slightly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All that aside, this is warming up to be a humdinger of a hurricane season.  Apparently there are several more nasty candidates hanging around out there in the Atlantic, undecided where (or hopefully just if) they will make landfall.  Forecasters are unwilling to make any guesses at the moment.

I think I know why thy are refraining from making any medium or long range predictions. Over here our weather forecasters have just described a situation I have never seen before, where the jet stream has split into two separate air currents.  Although they are telling us that we are about to be hit by the tail end of one of the Atlantic storms, they have no idea how long they will hang around doing nasties over us, or how nasty it will be.   However bad, we only get (up until now) a small taste of the storms and hurricanes that batter the east coast of The Americas.  Still, I am not looking forward to the weather next week.  I hate to think what Harvey's relatives will do to America next,

Here's hoping Trump pulls his finger out and sorts out the disaster response services.  He could otherwise end up like Nero in the eyes of history: fiddling (the election, with Russian help Donnie's case) while Rome burns.  I know he wants to always be the first, the premier, the winner, but winning the race to be Americas most infamous historical figure is surely not what he intends.  I'm still not going to hold my breath; I need it to pray for the coastal dwellers over there.

Techno - don't forget that as one of the founders of the birther movement, Trump offered to donate $5 million, and then $50 million if Obama proved he was born in the US. I believe we're still waiting to see the money.

The real news - considering all that has happened I think this shows a great deal of courage to personally work to hand out food and hugging and holding children of all races. This is all over CNN today and I was surprised.

They are going to try and get more than 8 billion dollars passed to help Texas and if so - it will be the largest and fastest help for a disaster in U.S. history.

What is so courageous about holding children of different races?  Being different from yourself is not catching.  Generally speaking, most children are neither armed nor dangerous.

If you can't see this as a publicity stunt then I feel sorry for you.  Trump is the most powerful man in the world and yet he spends time on the front line.  5 minutes with a pen could solve ALL of Houston's problems (though it might delay a policy or two) and this just does a job someone else could do as well; without the security entourage, probably much better.  To make such capital from so much misery when he could, instead, actually help is sickening!

wow!  Socialism has worked so well... ummm... where?  I have a pastor's wife right now whose parents have had strokes in the past two years and Canada sent them BOTH home after each stroke and said it was nothing.  Duh?  Oh yeah, they can't leave the country to visit their children in America because if they went to a dr here, then Canada would have to pay for the bill.  So they have been handed a travel ban.

Works so well!

Australia has hottest winter on record as climate change drives long-term warming trend

The danger period for bushfires has moved a month forward into September because of the more arid conditions

australia-hottest-winter.jpgOver 200 weather records were broken in Australia during the summer of 2016, with extreme bushfires and heatwaves Reuters

The hottest winter ever has been recorded in Australia amid a "long-term warming trend" mostly caused by climate change, according to the country's Bureau of Meteorology.

Peak temperatures during the day were up by 1.9 degrees Celsius (3.4 Fahrenheit) on the long-term national average of 21.8C during the period between June and August.

Winter rainfall was also down to the least amount since 2002 and the ninth-lowest on record. Australia started charting the statistics in 1900 for rainfall and 1910 for temperatures.

"You have a long-term warming trend which is largely attributed to changing levels of greenhouse gases," the bureau's senior climatologist Blair Trewin told AFP.

"On top of that, to get an individual extreme year like this one, you also need the more general weather pattern to be favourable to warm conditions as well, as this year was."

The bureau also noted that 19 of Australia’s last 20 winters had seasonal top temperatures that averaged above the long-term national average.

Meteorologist Greg Browning said it was "basically this background warming signal that we're seeing right across the globe associated with global warming".

Victoria was faced with the driest winter in more than 10 years, with rainfall “significantly below average,” Mr Trewin told the Herald Sun.

More than 200 weather records were broken during the summer of 2016, with extreme bushfires, heatwaves and flooding.

Australia has warmed by around one degree Celsius since 1910, weather bureau and national science body CSIRO reported.

New South Wales’s Rural Fire Service is bringing forward its bushfire danger period to September, a month earlier because of the hotter and more arid conditions.

Research published in Nature Climate Change last week stated that hotter, drier conditions would increase in frequency even if global warming was kept to the Paris Climate Summit target of 1.5C.

The study warned it would be harder to tackle drought events and wildfires.

The highest-ever recorded temperature in Australia was 50.7C (123.3 F) in Oodnadatta on 2 January 1960.

A firefighting Hercules C-130 plane, dubbed ‘Thor’, has returned to Richmond airbase in Sydney from the United States, to prepare for the country's bushfire season. The aircraft is capable of dropping 15,000 litres of water or fire retardant.

JD, are you in the San Francisco area?  I've read about their heat wave!

      This is a sobering map:

The setting sun in the Chicago area is an erie red due to the atmospheric particulates from fires in Canada and Alaska.

NC Girl, I agree that socialism does not work.  The far left never does.  Neither does the far right.  The left lets its heart rule its head and the right lets its head rule its heart.  The left bankrupts the country and the right bankrupts the little guy.  The muddled, moderate, mediocre middle is the path of least damage.

Trump is no centrist.  I would place him somewhat right of Genghis Khan.  He is manipulative, bullying, and dishonest.  He demonstrates many of the character traits associated with the psychopath.  (The definition is not black and white but comes in a sliding scale.  Many CEOs classify as one on points average.  It makes them winners; it does not make them nice people.)  His publicity, or propaganda, is reminiscent of Goebbels' propaganda both before and during the formation of the Third Reich.  His media manipulation reminds me of Nixon (not the stuff they tried to impeach Nixon for, but his election winning media hype).  He has an ego so fragile he reacts with all the diplomacy of a charging bull if anyone crosses him.  Both his apparent racism and his obvious racial intolerance are disgusting and his lack of self control, considering the power of his position, is frankly terrifying.

I live in a country which tries to occupy the center ground politically.  It is a tightrope and we tend to fall over one side or the other, but we spring back to the middle.  We are Smaller than one of America's states and yet we are one of the G8 (and the 5 eyes).  The American middle class is richer than the British one, but appears to live in perpetual fear of losing everything.  We live longer than you do on average and our medicine is free at the point of need for everyone.

When I was young and adventurous I contemplated living in several other Countries. America was on my research list.  I ended up staying here as our way of life  was preferable.  Now I am older, weaker and have a disabled son, I am profoundly glad I stayed.  I believe in the right to bear arms, but am very happy I did not chose to pay the price of living there to get it.  I understand and share the American love of freedom and know that rampant socialism removes it from the people.  It may surprise you to learn that rampant right wing politics does too, it just does it by reducing people to poverty instead of legislating their rights away.  Poverty is more restrictive of freedom than prison or a gulag.  Both are effectively nasty for the people.  If you are one of the super-rich then right wing politics probably does work for you.  If your conscience can take milking so  much from those who are poorer, a typical CEO approach. But, there are precious few super-rich and many, many much poorer.  Taking a strongly right wing approach stems from either a lack of care for your fellow man, or a failure to understand the consequences of one's actions.  'And Trump is lying about those consequences.

I can't comment on Canada.  I have never been there and the one Canadian I used to talk to (Germ Nerd) has disappeared off of the radar.

San Diego, Chuck. East County specifically. It does get pretty hot out there, but this heatwave is particularly brutal and expected to last a while. It's pretty windy too, which is making the risk of wildfires that much greater.
NorCal is getting it pretty bad too. When we drove to Oregon for the solar eclipse, it was hovering around the high 90s as we got to the northern end of the Central Valley, and the forecast was for even warmer weather.

"Irma has intensified to a “potentially catastrophic” Category 5 storm. The hurricane is packing winds of a whopping 185 miles per hour, making it the most powerful hurricane to form in the Atlantic Ocean since satellite observations began."

winds of 185 MPH ??? Ouch

Thanks, I've been watching it closely!!

I could easily see Irma snaking around past or over Florida into the Gulf of Mexico....and back into Houston!!  That is usually how Gulf hurricanes evolve (Harvey did that as well).

If Houston were to get nailed again, the effect would be as if the place were hit with a nuclear weapon - widespread and permanent destruction of infrastructure.  People would probably be smart enough to evacuate, but you never know.

      Keep an eye on it!
