I still never cease to be amazed you cannot spell America any better than terrorist that was going to blow up Seattle. We intercepted the message. That is how he spelled it exactly. Seattle is still here. Are you sure you are not friends? The entire Congress is the definition of incompetence with an approval rate of 10%. Many of Europe's leaders are under 40%. The earth may be heating up, but it will not result in warming in the U.S. We may be on the verge of an Ice Age. The so called treaty would not result in any real progress putting things off for over a decade. The accord was little more the hand tying of American industry while China - a huge contributor to whatever is up there in the atmosphere i.e. C02 - would ignore it. This is like telling soldiers to fight with their hands ties. Our industry cannot afford any more of this chant in the boats for the whales stuff. If we do not mobilize our industry we will lose all of our jobs and companies who will leave America and set up shop overseas and offshore. Clinton lost the rust states because she was oblivious to the worker class. She threatened to shut down the coal industry. What a profound and stupid mistake that was. Her entire campaign was a classic study of incompetence targeting illegal immigrant to vote for her, minorities and alternate life styles, and she completely forgot about the south - and many parts of the north. She did not win New Hampshire, it was voter fraud and a miscount. We need more scientific studies and technology to understand what is happening. Unfortunately, it is likely that nothing we do is going to create any measurable change for 50 years. The biggest change we are going to see is a Nuclear Winter when all the bombs go off. That is what we should be focused on - not Paris. Medclinician |

Here's the truth about global warming:
Carbon Dioxide is a proven greenhouse gas (GHG), as proven as a flame on the stove will boil water. The physics have been known since identified by the Swedish chemist Arrhenius in 1896. Carbon dioxide absorbs infrared, which heats the entire Earth. There are a few natural forces at play, including the fact that the planet is coming out of a long ice-age. However, the data showing that man's influence on climate by industrial production of greenhouse gases is not seriously questioned by any reputable scientists. We are probably too late to do anything about it, since GHG are emitted from natural sources (wetlands produce methane) and manmade sources including agriculture, power generation, even landfills and rice agriculture. Get ready for more heat waves, droughts and extreme weather. This is fact. The sun and natural perturbations of the Earth's orbit have virtually no effect upon the climate, compared to GHG levels. We are cooked, folks. By the time the political opponents realize this, it will be too late to do anything about it. There is no magic technical bullet to undo the damage of two hundred years of burning coal and oil. |

If Trump would make the US stay in the "Paris-agreement" it would be for foreign policy reasons.
The relationship between the EU and the US is in a crisis. The UK leaving the EU worsens that crisis. The "Paris-agreement" is less than the minimum needed. China is gaining ground in solar power, electric cars, high-speed-trains. The US is getting less and less interesting for the EU-market when they produce goods that do not fit in a "green" concept and can be paid in Euro's. Of course most US-citizens and companies realize that "Trump" is a temporary problem. Hopefully the US can have better presidential candidates with the next US presidential elections. (I am not going to start on the "other presidential candidate in last US elections....) Angela Merkel (the NSA hacked her phone in the past https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jun/12/germany-drops-inquiry-into-claims-nsa-tapped-angela-merkels-phone-the official story "no proof" is not widely taken serious) most likely will win the German elections this month. She seems to be in favor of a "stronger Europe"-it may burden the US-EU relations even further (with news that the US used German bases to supply "moderate rebels" (Al Qaeda, IS etc) in Syria with weapons. http://www.dw.com/en/us-sent-weapons-to-syria-through-ramstein-military-base-report/a-40495553 (DJ using east european maffia to buy russian weapons to send them to "rebels"via Turkey (in exchange for IS oil ?) is also not helping EU-US relations). US support for the Ukraine regime in stead of Minsk/Astana is yet another point of disagreement.) The refugee-crisis is blamed on the US. Climate change can be blamed by the mass public on the US as well. (Even though incorrect-but that is not how communications work).

I have some questions, Med.
You said: "I still never cease to be amazed you cannot spell America any better than terrorist that was going to blow up Seattle. We intercepted the message. That is how he spelled it exactly. Seattle is still here. Are you sure you are not friends?" What bomber? Whom is the "we" you refer to? As for Amurika, it is a fairly common term among people who think America is on a dangerous track and wish to steer it back into safer waters. This was explained to you. Why do you keep asking? You said: "The earth may be heating up, but it will not result in warming in the U.S." How do you work that out? I know "God, guts and guns made America", but said "God" made the rest of the Earth too. What makes your country exempt from the physics? You are right about the rust states, but public opinion does not automatically mean something is right. Do you really not understand how damaging coal is? The truth is very simple. It is the dirtiest of the lot. It not only increases global carbon dioxide, but also adds smuts to the the atmosphere, which increase warming even more, not to mention killing people. China, by the way, polutes LESS than America does, although they are trying hard to catch up. Final question: Why spend more on scientific climate studies to prove that which is already proven? There may be a few religious nuts who think evolution unproven, but it is totally proven to the intelligent. There may be people who still think the Earth is flat, but that was shown to be inaccurate hundreds of years ago. I know there are still some climate change deniers, but they fall into the insane, vested interest or just plain stupid categories too. Stop worrying about a nuclear winter. A single bomb is possible, but very unlikely. A limited exchange is a profoundly remote possibility An insensate nuclear war is just not feasable. Trump may be an incompetent, belligerent idiot, but Putin and the Chinese leadership are not.

I was wondering about the Seattle bomber reference too. You mentioned it before, but it seemed to be more of a hypothetical. Who intercepted what?
Coal again, Med? I know Trump doesn't get it, but I thought you were smarter than that. I know he's completely above criticism in your eyes right now, but the campaign promise to bring back coal jobs was yet another made solely to garner votes. He lied, Med. He's not bringing back coal because it's done as a fuel. Quite apart from being filthy, it's more expensive than natural gas, and that's going to be the last nail in it's coffin. Why would energy providers willing pay more? Well said, Chuck. I completely agree - I think we've set a positive feedback loop in motion, and we could sequester all the atmospheric carbon we like and it won't make a difference now methane's been thrown into the equation. Water vapor too. Batten down the hatches and start thinking about where you want to be when the effects become more apparent. Man made climate change is here to stay for at least next few few millennia. |

'We might not recover': Neil deGrasse Tyson gets emotional and sounds the alarm. All the alarms.
https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/9/20/1700024/--We-might-not-recover-Neil-deGrasse-Tyson-gets-emotional-and-sounds-the-alarm-All-the-alarms " This is happening faster than our ability to respond" mankind is facing its biggest challenge ever and we have a climate change denier in the White House who has installed in the EPA someone who is literally gutting that organization as we speak and "leaders" in Congress like the terminally brain dead Jim Inhofe who are doing everything they can to insure that as many people suffer and die as possible we are literally living a nightmare and leading the way its ALWAYS Republicans isn't it ? why is that ??? |

I agree, but that kind of depends on who you mean by "we":
We, as in the whole planet - definitely will recover. It might change a bit and it could take considerable time. We, as in us, the human race - probably will recover - eventually, after loosing a few million or so. We, as in America - not so certain. You can't prepare for a problem until you acknowledge it is real. - So, no hope under Donnie and his cabal. There will be survivors, but the beloved democracy, which is a guiding light for the world, may not recover from this sudden climate shift. It was climate change (and not as abrupt as the ones we are currently undergoing) which destroyed most of the previous civilizations.

Nicaragua just joined the Paris climate agreement/accord. Now, only two countries do not support it, Syria and the US. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2017/10/24/not-being-part-of-the-paris-climate-deal-something-only-the-u-s-and-syria-agree-on/?utm_term=.19a0ec2714be Syria is a wasteland, radically divided on sectarian lines, with no effective government and America is.....?
