Trump's Katrina is here: 1.5 million without water, six months without power expected in Puerto Rico

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/9/27/1701975/-Trump-s-Katrina-is-here-1-5-million-without-water-six-months-without-power-expected-in-Puerto-Rico

just one problem

The Trump administration on Tuesday denied a request from several members of Congress to waive shipping restrictions to help get gasoline and other supplies to Puerto Rico as the island recovers from Hurricane Maria.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) declined the request to waive the Jones Act, which limits shipping between coasts to U.S.-flagged vessels, according to Reuters. DHS waived the act following hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which hit the mainland U.S.

The agency has in the past waived the rule to allow cheaper and more readily-available foreign vessels to supply goods to devastated areas. But DHS said Tuesday that waiving the act for Puerto Rico would not help the U.S. island territory due to damaged ports preventing ships from docking.

DJ; Both Katrina and Maria were expected a few days before they hit New Orleans c.q. Puerto Rico. In both cases you could claim (local) governments failed.

-long term, not enough measures were taken to protect citizens for damage
-short term, after the disaster New Orleans citizens did not get enough aid, were prevented from moving to nearby safe locations. After "Maria" the federal government did not react fast enough-wich may have cost some lives.

But of course when you compare Katrina with over 1800 people killed, Maria https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Maria#Puerto_Rico_2 did limited damage.
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Trump Golfs While Desperation Mounts In Puerto Rico

http://crooksandliars.com/2017/09/san-juan-mayor-furious-trump

Well, after weeks of Trump saying that things are going great, the mayor of the largest city in Puerto Rico went on the news today literally pleading for help. She said, bluntly, "We are dying here."

She went on:

"We are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency, and the bureaucracy...This is what we got last night. Four pallets of water, three pallets of meals, and 12 pallets of infant food — which, I gave them to the people of Comerio, where people are drinking off a creek. So I am done being polite. I am done being politically correct. I am mad as hell."

if that statement is true

Trump is beyond incompetent

he is just plain callous and cruel

this is a TOTAL failure of leadership

and while this disaster continues to unfold

Mr. Jameson Neat @MrJamesonNeat

Trump will join FEMA in Puerto Rico this weekend to assist with rescue efforts

Just kidding, he's golfing for the 66th time since Jan 20th

66 times in 8 months !!!

and this from someone who said "I will rarely leave Washington"

LIAR !!!

The Mayor of San Juan is drawing criticism on Twitter from Trump for being "mean" to him at the request of the Democrats. He just made the destruction of a US territory all about him. This is beyond ridiculous.

Puerto Ricans feel like 'second-class citizens'

Mr Trump's comments drew swift condemnation on the mainland.

"The tweets this morning are despicable, are deplorable, are not statesman-like at all," said New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, a Democrat who was born in Puerto Rico.

"He needs to be in charge, he needs to take control, he needs to demonstrate some level of empathy over what is happening," Ms Mark-Viverito told CNN.

His acting homeland security secretary Elaine Duke had earlier surveyed the Puerto Rican landscape by helicopter, and also drove past still-flooded streets, twisted billboards and roofs with gaping holes.

Meanwhile water and food rations are improving, and telecommunications have been restored to about 30 per cent of the island.

Nearly half of the supermarkets have reopened, at least for reduced hours, and about 60 per cent of the petrol stations are pumping.

But Puerto Ricans say they feel neglected by the mainland US.

A Morning Consult-New York Times poll shows that more than half of Americans do not realise that Puerto Rico is a US territory and that its residents are US citizens.

Xavier Totti, who moved to the mainland US from Puerto Rico says he is still asked routinely if he is "legal", and when he mails packages to relatives back home he has to fill out an international form.

"By now, it's sort of comical, but it makes me feel second-class, like you don't belong," he said.

Donald Trump is struggling to be the president he promised

119 reading now

On the campaign trail, Donald Trump pitched himself as a deal maker who would look out for the country's "forgotten people," "drain the swamp," unite the country, "immediately repeal and replace Obamacare," surround himself with "only with the best and most serious people" and, of course, "win so much."

But this past week made clear that President Trump is falling far short of fulfilling those promises.

< =>

Trump denies being preoccupied with NFL protests

US President Donald Trump says he has not been overly focused on the nation-wide NFL protests this week.

He launched a divisive debate with racial undertones about whether professional athletes should stand for the national anthem, lashed out at Puerto Rico officials for begging his administration for more help following a devastating hurricane and backed a tax plan that analysts say would greatly benefit the wealthy.

Meanwhile, his chosen candidate in the Alabama Senate race lost big to an insurgent challenger, the latest attempt to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act failed and his health and human services secretary resigned after using taxpayer dollars to pay for several, expensive chartered flights, the eighth major departure from the president's top staff in fewer than eight months.

"He campaigned on the basis of large promises which were, in many cases, disconnected from any concrete program for achieving them," said William A Galston, a top policy adviser to former president Bill Clinton and now a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. "He entered office having issued a bunch of promissory notes but not having thought through how to redeem them - and that's a very difficult way to begin an administration."

Trump's problems this week mirror those that have dogged his presidency since the first day, but they are becoming more troublesome for the president and his party as they are increasingly under pressure to deliver on at least part their agenda.

A

Galston cautioned against putting too much emphasis on one week and noted it often takes presidents at least a year or two to install the right staff and learn how Washington operates.

"Thirty-five years of experience in Washington, for better or for worse, has taught me that things change," Galston said, explaining Trump could still pass a package of tax cuts, the economy could continue its winning streak and Republicans could retain control of Congress during the midterm elections next year. "At this point in Bill Clinton's presidency - and I'm not comparing the two - his popularity had fallen very sharply, his health bill was in trouble, he was a year away from a total rout in the 1994 midterm elections, and yet he was re-elected president by 8 percentage points."

Trump supporters argued the past week had its upsides.

Christopher Ruddy, the chief executive of Newsmax Media who is friends with the Trump, said it was actually "a pretty good week for the president." Trump is "very much on top" of the crisis in Puerto Rico, earned favor with Hill Republicans by supporting Strange, sided with "most Americans" on how to behave during the national anthem and pushed a tax cut that's "going to be a massive windfall for all Americans," according to Ruddy.

"His approval numbers have been stable and trending up," He said Saturday afternoon. "Despite the negative press barrage, he is standing pretty tall in my book."

Before this past week, Trump's presidency did appear to be on the upswing as he hit more of a focused stride. His approval rating increased slightly after he worked with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a government shutdown. The administration was widely praised for its initial response to hurricanes that hit Texas, Florida and other Gulf Coast states. His angry, early-morning tweets became less frequent, avoiding the distractions they almost always bring.

But then Trump travelled to northern Alabama on September 22 to rally support for Senator Luther Strange, the Republican appointed to fill Attorney General Jeff Sessions's vacated seat. Trump was reluctant to go and from the stage he aired his reservations about endorsing Strange instead former state judge Roy Moore, who is popular with Trump's own supporters.

At that Friday night rally, Trump delivered a stream-of-consciousness speech that lasted nearly 90 minutes. He repeatedly cursed, jokingly threatened to fire a Cabinet member, called allegations of Russian interference in the election a "hoax" and repeatedly re-lived the 2016 election. He seemed angry and dispirited.

Trump told the crowd that he and Strange "are unified by the same great American values" and that they both "respect our flag," and then launched into an attack on professional football players who kneel during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial inequality. He said such players are a "son of a b----" and that team owners should fire them for disrespecting the American flag.

"If you see it, even if it's one player, leave the stadium," Trump said, calling on a boycott of a major American industry. "I guarantee things will stop, things will stop. Just pick up and leave, pick up and leave. Not the same game anymore anyway."

Starting that Sunday, the number of players who knelt during the anthem greatly increased - and they were joined by coaches and even some owners who stood with them in solidarity. Trump, who once promised to "bring us all together as Americans," had succeeded in dividing the country over an issue with racial overtones and that had previously received little attention outside the sports world. He then continued to escalate the tensions in a series of morning tweet storms.

By Monday afternoon, it became clear that Congress' latest attempt at repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act would fail, even though Trump once said that he could accomplish this in just one day. The president would blame the latest failure on a Republican senator who was "in the hospital" and couldn't make the vote - even though Senator Thad Cochran, Miss., was never hospitalised, he had undergone some medical treatment, and his vote was not decisive. There was enough votes to kill the legislation with or without Cochran.

To explain his lack of legislative success, Trump often blames Republican lawmakers - even though he said in his speech accepting the Republican nomination that "I alone can fix" the country.

On Tuesday, Moore beat Strange in a Republican primary election, and Trump tweeted his support for Moore while some of his past tweets in support of Strange were deleted from his account.

Meanwhile, food, water and fuel were running out in Puerto Rico, where Hurricane Maria had decimated much of the island's roads, airports and ports as well as its telecommunications infrastructure. Puerto Rico was nearly entirely without power, a problem expected to continue for weeks, and about half of residents did not have access to clean water.

As the week progressed, conditions in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands became only more dire. For days, cable news showed endless footage of the destruction and desperation in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands - along with increasingly critical assessments of the Trump administration's response. Reporters on the ground found that food, water and medicine had arrived to the area on boats but had not yet been delivered to people in need because of a shortage of truck drivers.

Trump took a much different tone in talking about Puerto Rico than he had with Texas or Florida, tweeting on Monday that the island "was already suffering from broken infrastructure & massive debt" before the hurricane hit.

He repeatedly praised his administration's efforts. "Great job," he said Tuesday. "Very proud," he said Wednesday. "Tremendous strides," he said Friday.

On Saturday, the president accused Puerto Rico residents - who are American citizens - of wanting "everything to be done for them." He lashed out at San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, who has harshly criticised his administration's response and begged for help for her constituents.

"Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help," Trump tweeted.

The administration has defended its response to the devastation on the island, with press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Saturday tweeting a quote from Puerto Rico's governor saying that every time he has asked for help, "they've executed quickly."

On the campaign trail, Trump promised to represent "the forgotten men and women" and get them better-paying jobs and lower taxes. He said he would lower the national debt by bringing his "common sense" business attitude to spending. This week, however, he released a tax plan that analysts said would benefit the top 1 percent more than middle-class families, although Trump continues to claim the opposite is true, while greatly adding to the deficit.

Meanwhile, news broke that some members of Trump's Cabinet were using taxpayer money to fly private chartered jets along routes where much less expensive commercial flights were available. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price took more than two dozen such flights that cost taxpayers more than $400,000, according to Politico.

Trump made clear that he was "not happy" about this, and Price resigned on Friday.

"I certainly don't like the optics," the president said, as he left the White House on Friday afternoon to spend the weekend at his private golf club in New Jersey. "We renegotiate deals. We're renegotiating trade deals . . . I've saved hundreds of millions of dollars. So, I don't like the optics of what you just saw."

Some Republicans saw a silver lining in Price's departure.

"I think this is an opportunity for the president to kind of put a freeze on things, re-center, refocus everybody, and say, let's not get too comfortable in our jobs because we're renting these positions that were offered to us by the American people," Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger, said on Fox News Friday evening. "So, let's get back to our core mission."

Disease outbreaks begin in Puerto Rico even as Trump attacks its citizens on Twitter

The first outbreaks of contagious disease are beginning on the island of Puerto Rico 10 days after Hurricane Maria strafed the U.S. territory with a direct hit, according to The Daily Beast, even as the federal response lags and President Donald Trump attacks Puerto Rico and its elected officials on Twitter.

The Daily Beast’s Pablo Venes spoke to Puerto Rican mayors and health officials about the ticking infectious disease time bomb waiting to explode into a full-on public health crisis as citizens enter their second week without electricity, air conditioning, water, food or medication.

“Ninety-five percent of the island is still without electricity more than a week after Hurricane Maria struck, including most hospitals. Only about half of the island’s 3.4 million population has drinking water. These two factors, plus unsanitary flood water inundating homes and towns, have created a public-health emergency,” wrote Venes.

Mayor Julia Navarro of Loiza, a city half an hour’s drive from San Juan, said residents are showing signs of Dengue fever, Zika virus and a runaway epidemic of conjunctivitis that has infected more than 300 people.

“I’m here because there are still murky waters clogged on my streets and residents have been showing symptoms of Zika, Dengue and conjunctivitis virus,” she said. “If I didn’t come here personally, I wouldn’t get any help.”

Victor Ramos — president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Puerto Rico — told the Daily Beast that the health crisis is just beginning.

“We still see communities were flood water is on their driveways and common playground areas,” he said, noting the flood water is a combination of rainwater and raw sewage. “This has to stop. The second someone comes in contact with flood water, their lives and are in danger.”

The lack of running water means that opportunities for proper hygiene have largely disappeared, Ramos said, leaving the population vulnerable to cholera, hepatitis A, meningitis, and salmonella.

“Without water supply, residents rely on stocking water to wash their mouth and do the dishes. This water is often stored incorrectly and this gets infected rapidly,” he explained.

Outside the cities, where information is scarce due to the collapsed communications network, Ramos said the problems will be the most intense — in the areas that are the most difficult to access.

Puerto Rico’s network of hospitals are struggling to keep up with patient demands, but with no water, dwindling food supplies and a scarcity of diesel for generators, most are barely hanging on.

The island nation of Haiti was decimated in a 2010 earthquake, but the deaths from cholera in the months that followed outnumbered the lives lost in the quake itself. Four years later, Haiti struggled with an outbreak of chikungunya, a mosquito-borne virus that attacks the brain, joints and connective tissues.

Hospital ship the U.S.N.S. Comfort left port at the end of this week — 8 days after the hurricane — to begin its trip to the beleaguered island. It is expected to arrive next week, but as Venes noted, “For some, it will be too late.”Source:   https://www.rawstory.com/2017/09/disease-outbreaks-begin-in-puerto-rico-even-as-trump-attacks-its-citizens-on-twitter/

Latest reports are that the hospital morgues across Puerto Rico are already at capacity, and the US Army says the number of people without clean drinking water has increased from 44% to 55% in four days. Things are deteriorating rapidly despite the administration's assurances to the contrary. This is what happens when you put a businessman in charge who never gives away anything without the expectation of compensation. At least politicians know the value of public service, even if it's only for the good press it provides.

This is not business - this is the right thing to do, and people will lose their lives before Trump understands. If he ever actually does.

That means the U.S. island decimated by Hurricane Maria will go back to paying double the shipping costs for food and supplies.

In some areas it is not as bad as they are saying. My college aged daughter plays college sports and has several friends that were on the college baseball team that have graduated and returned to Puerto Rico. She has been texting back and forth with them, as she does everyday. They were only without electricity in their area for a day or 2 and they are doing fine. So in some areas it's ok.

anyone imagined

Must See TV! Bethenny Frankel leads by example and HUMILIATES all the Trumps and FEMA.

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/10/10/1705836/-Bettheny-Frankel-leads-by-example-and-HUMILIATES-both-Donald-Trump-and-FEMA

Compare this to fellow New Yorker, Donald Trump, who actually owns a FLEET of planes (including a 757) which he has left parked the whole time and there is no question that leading by example she highlights the failure of character, the pure greed of the Trump family.  Compare her effective delivery of millions of dollars in aid to the completely ineffective delivery of basic necessities by FEMA and she humiliates this administration at all levels.

4 Puerto Rico deaths blamed on post-hurricane outbreak

Apparently contaminated water is believed to be to blame.  So, that is unlikely to get any better quickly.  Also, rumor has it, that Trump is talking about reducing FEMA's involvement in the disaster struck area.
Thank God for Bethany Frankel.  I do not know whom to thank for Trump, though I have a suspicion.

Reporter Got Pentagon Emails Depicting Plans To Spin Puerto Rico As Positive Despite The Truth

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/10/13/1706670/-Reporter-Got-Pentagon-Emails-Depicting-Plans-To-Spin-Puerto-Rico-As-Positive-Despite-The-Truth

well golly gee whiz
surprise surprise SURPRISE !!!

If the spew from the Trump administration firehose of falsehood hasn’t been enough to overwhelm you yet, here’s the latest blast. Bloomberg News climate reporter Christopher Flavelle was inadvertently included on a Pentagon internal distribution list, in which Defense Department and Federal Emergency Management Agency officials sent emails discussing their evolving strategy for presenting the response to Hurricane Maria.

Flavelle put the Pentagon on notice of its error, but for five days received emails documenting the overt spin doctoring taking place, which was to present the rescue efforts in Puerto Rico as positive and more than adequate and to discredit the Mayor of San Juan for telling the truth.

No Let Up For Puerto Rico.

The island communities devastated by hurricane and the indifference of the sociopathic President is now suffering the tripple whammy of disease.  And Trump said they were 'whining'.

What is leptospirosis, the deadly disease spreading in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico?

By Emma Curtis , AccuWeather staff writer
October 23, 2017, 11:32:52 AM EDTA total of 74 Puerto Ricans are suspected to be suffering from leptospirosis since Hurricane Maria wreaked havoc across the island last month, and four deaths are being investigated as possible cases of the disease, according to the Associated Press.

Although dozens of people are may be suffering from the bacterial disease, officials have denied to call it an epidemic or a confirmed outbreak.

The disease is the result of contact with water that has been contaminated by animal urine. Puerto Rico averages 60 reported cases of leptospirosis each year. The 74 suspected cases have transpired since Hurricane Maria hit the island.

More than a third of the island remains without running water; some of those affected by leptospirosis fell ill after drinking local stream water.

According to the CDC, symptoms of leptospirosis are wide and varied but can include high fever, jaundice, red eyes and body pain. The CDC also states that some infected people may have no symptoms at all, a worrisome thought for those in Puerto Rico that have resorted to drinking contaminated water.

The time between a person’s exposure to contaminated water and becoming sick can range from two days to four weeks, leaving plenty of time for more cases to be reported over the next month or more.

The CDC states that leptospirosis can last for a few days or several months depending on treatment, yet people in Puerto Rico are dying from the infection.

"While most patients have mild or self-limiting infection, some patients will develop severe infection and present with bleeding or hemorrhage, kidney failure, meningitis and hepatitis," said Dr. M. Rizwan Sohail, a professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Mayo Clinic. "The death rate in patients who develop severe infection is between 5 and 15 percent."
