Police is shooting at people standing in line to cast their vote in a referendum on independence of Catalunya-eastern part of Spain/Barcelona region.

DJ; I have mixed ideas about these kind of referendums. But police shooting at voters is totally not acceptable.

Rejoy-partido popular (with franco-dictatorship links) is a total disaster when he lets this crisis get out of hand completely.

These acts of government terror against peacefull citizens endangers stability in a wider region than Catalunya.

Police taking away ballot-boxes, blocking internetsides, citizens reopening new voting locations, opening internetsides were people can print voting forms.

In the European Parlement members are asking will the EU intervene only after many people get killed ?

Catalunya has become an occupied zone-when you compare it to the Scottish referendum this Spanish situation is shocking !

Catalan referendum: Catalonia has 'won right to statehood'

Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont says the region has won the right to statehood following Sunday's contentious referendum which was marred by violence.

He said the door had been opened to a unilateral declaration of independence.

Hundreds of people were injured as Spanish police used force to try to block voting.

The Spanish government had pledged to stop a poll that was declared illegal by the country's constitutional court.

Police officers prevented some people from voting, and seized ballot papers and boxes at polling stations.

"With this day of hope and suffering, the citizens of Catalonia have won the right to an independent state in the form a republic," Mr Puigdemont said in a televised address flanked by other senior Catalan leaders.

"My government, in the next few days will send the results of today's vote to the Catalan parliament, where the sovereignty of our people lies, so that it can act in accordance with the law of the referendum."

He said the European Union could no longer "continue to look the other way".

In another development, more than 40 trade unions and Catalan associations called a region-wide strike on Tuesday due to "the grave violation of rights and freedoms".

Earlier, as voting ended, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Catalans had been fooled into taking part in an illegal vote. He called it a "mockery" of democracy.

Large crowds of independence supporters gathered in the centre of the regional capital Barcelona on Sunday evening, waving flags and singing the Catalan anthem.

How bad was the violence?

The Catalan government said more than 800 people had been injured in clashes across the region.

The Spanish interior ministry said 12 police officers had been hurt and three people arrested. It added that 92 polling stations had been closed.

In Girona, riot police smashed their way into a polling station where Mr Puigdemont was due to vote, and forcibly removed those inside. Mr Puigdemont voted at another station.

The BBC's Tom Burridge in Barcelona witnessed police being chased away from one polling booth after they had raided it.

TV footage showed riot police using batons to beat a group of firefighters who were protecting crowds in Girona.

The national police and Guardia Civil - a military force charged with police duties - were sent into Catalonia in large numbers to prevent the vote.

Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau condemned police actions against the region's "defenceless" population

How much voting took place?

Catalan authorities said 319 of about 2,300 polling stations across the region had been closed by police while the Spanish government said 92 stations had been closed.

Since Friday, thousands of people have occupied schools and other buildings designated as polling stations in order to keep them open.

Many of those inside were parents and their children, who remained in the buildings after the end of lessons on Friday and bedded down in sleeping bags on gym mats.

Catalonia, a wealthy region of 7.5 million people in north-eastern Spain, has its own language and culture.

It also has a high degree of autonomy, but is not recognised as a separate nation under the Spanish constitution.

DJ; About 42% of the people supposed to vote did vote, some of them more than once. Also people that did not live in the region could print a form and vote. The police blocked all registers to sabotage this referendum.

Another remark-Catalonia =7% of Spain but about 25% of the Spanish economy, it is the richest part of Spain. Bavaria in Germany, Northern Italy-Milan,Torino also do not want to pay for the rest of the country. Scotland has most of the UK Northsea oil.

The EU did not manage to deal good enough with strong regional differences-some areas remained poor.

The Catalan language https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalan_language is also spoken in (small) parts of France and Italy.

DJ; Violence is never an answer-only makes things (much) worse. Fragmentation of states could give more problems than answers. The basic problems need to be discussed; politics has become a toy for elites-does not help the common citizen enough.

The "Catalunya-crisis" is in a lot more places than just Spain.

DJ; The independence movement in Catalonia is not "left" or "right"political-it is wide among all political groups in the region. People are fed up with a corrupt (royal) elite (both in the right wing Partido Popular as the Socialist Party). This "discomfort" is widespread in the western world. Politics so far fail to give an answer.

For the US donald trump is a symptom-just like h.clinton-of a bankrupt political system.

It is expected that the Catalunya regional government will declare independence the coming hours. Spain will then arrest them for high treason. But that only will make things worse further....

In my opinion new elections for ALL of Spain-including Catalunya-could be part of finding a solution. More violence should be avoided. For the moment Madrid-Rajoy- for political and personal reasons is not willing to take such action. The Spanish Trade Unions, opposition will react-the police brutality shown in Catalunya is an insult for all Spanish people.

The EU is-in many ways-part of the problem. Self-reflection would be a good thing for politicians-instead they continu their lies. This crisis is far from over.

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
